Blackpool Council has provided an update on the Grade-II listed Colonnades, which have been partly closed for more than a year due to safety concerns and structural defects.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Councillor Jane Hugo and I'm just here today to give an update on our colonnades.
00:05The colonnades are over 100 years old. Standing on our seafront for over a century, they're
00:09a familiar sight for many, but after so many years facing the corrosive sea air, they're
00:13showing their age. We've carried out a survey to see what repairs are needed and how to
00:18make them last for the future. This will likely mean carrying out the work in phases over
00:22several years, so the colonnades can be protected for generations to come. However, repairs
00:28are costly and the council also has to focus on other priorities like supporting families,
00:33building homes, fixing roads and creating jobs. We're now in a position where we're exploring
00:38long term funding options to protect this Grade 2 listed landmark. In the meantime we're planning
00:44some smaller repairs to safely reopen more walkways so everyone can continue to enjoy walking and
00:50cycling along our wonderful promenade.
