00:00Blackpool Zoo is celebrating a major milestone in elephant care as baby Zaya, the newest addition to
00:06the herd, continues to thrive under the watchful eyes of dedicated keepers. Born just seven weeks
00:12ago, Zaya faced a challenging start to life. First time Mumtara struggled to nurse naturally,
00:19prompting zookeepers to step in with round-the-clock nutritional support.
00:24Despite the challenges, the team's careful approach ensures Zaya receives the nourishment she needs
00:29while remaining fully integrated with her herd. Every two hours, Zaya makes her way to a secure
00:36calf area where she is given a bottle of specially formulated elephant milk. Once she's fed, she
00:43returns to her mother and the other female elephants who continue to provide close supervision and
00:48reassurance, maintaining the vital bonds and protective instincts central to elephant family life.
00:55While Zaya has not yet managed to suckle from Tara, her growth and behaviour show that
00:59she is thriving.
