00:00up and we were still in the holiday spirit. Everybody was celebrating. I had a two-month
00:08old and we were taking the opportunity to have a night out while my parents were watching
00:13my son. We went to the restaurant that I worked at. I remember having a good time.
00:21About 11 o'clock, somebody at the restaurant had said they heard over the scanner that
00:26there was a stabbing. We figured it was just some drunk idiot got in a fight and pulled
00:33out a knife and we'll find out who it is later because it's small town, Massachusetts. We're
00:39going to hear about it. But while we were heading home to my parents' house on Elm Street, we
00:47saw about five or six police cars on the road, which is not normal. I never thought that I
00:54would be sucked into this nightmare.
00:55I never thought that I would be sucked into this nightmare.
01:24I was the on-call investigator. So I was the on-call investigator. So I was the on-call
01:43investigator. So I was just at home with the family. It was New Year's Eve and we were
01:59waiting for the ball to drop when I got that phone call.
02:04I got a call from the Middleborough Police Department reporting an apparent homicide on Old Center
02:15Street in Middleborough, Massachusetts. The residence is located in a very rural part of
02:22Middleborough. It's across from a cranberry bog and it's surrounded by woods.
02:28When I first arrived at the scene, it was cold outside. There had been a light snowfall. It
02:41was an inch or less. I was introduced to Mr. Gillen, who had discovered his oldest daughter,
02:47Tara, inside of the den with stab wounds. She was covered in blood.
02:58When I first saw Tara, you could immediately see the brutality that was involved in this crime.
03:07It was overkill. Tara was stabbed at least 21 times.
03:1514 times in the upper back. Three times in the neck. Leaving a gaping injury. Mr. Gillen was needless
03:42needless to say, very upset. But he was able to provide the details we needed.
03:51Tara was 20 years old at the time. She was a sophomore from Indiana University and was an English major.
04:00And she was home for the Christmas break between semesters.
04:08That evening, December 31st, was he and his wife's anniversary. So they had chosen to make plans to go out for dinner to celebrate.
04:16They had invited Tara to go with them, but she had declined and chose to stay home.
04:24They returned about 11 p.m. And as he pulled up the driveway, he saw an open door.
04:31He immediately ran into the house.
04:48Entered the den area, which is right off of the kitchen.
04:50And he saw his daughter, Tara, lying on her back, naked from the waist down, covered in blood, with a gaping wound to her neck.
05:10And she was unresponsive.
05:11He approaches Tara.
05:22He hears a noise out in this hot tub room that is adjacent to the den.
05:27He immediately yelled out, I'll kill you, you bastard.
05:30When he got out into that room, there was nobody there.
05:47But he felt a blast of cold air, and that oriented him to realize that the window had been open.
05:53He also heard noises in the woods that were consistent with somebody fleeing.
06:03The breaking of branches, the squashing of snow.
06:08Footprints were leading away from his home.
06:16Mr. Gillen advised us that he located a blanket, and he placed it over his daughter.
06:23Mr. Gillen remained by his daughter's side until the police arrived.
06:33As a person, and as a parent, and as the father of a daughter, I just cannot imagine what that felt like to make that discovery.
06:43Neither then, or frankly, today, how you would even go on and deal with that.
06:48It's just tragic, tragic.
06:53But any homicide, you look at various factors.
06:58She could have been targeted by a spurring lover or boyfriend.
07:02Her pants and her underwear had been pulled down to the ankle area.
07:07So you would assume that you may have a sexual assault involved as well?
07:15Did she have an old acquaintance that knew she was in town, and maybe they knew that the parents went out and she was going to be alone?
07:21It was very difficult to make a determination whether the terror was targeted or if this was just a random crime.
07:30As we entered the house, things were tipped over, it was just an absolute mess.
07:50It could have been part of a burglary or somebody looking for valuables.
07:54We noted a cigarette butt in the middle of the carpeted hallway or the upstairs portion of the house.
08:02That was strange to us.
08:09I inspected the area that Mr. Gillen described from which he chased the assailant out of the house.
08:15The room contained a hot tub.
08:19There was a window that had opened up.
08:21Observations of that window indicated a forced exit.
08:26When processing the scene, they also found a partial footwear impression on the hot tub cover.
08:34It was pointed in the direction away from the home.
08:38So that gave investigators the indication that that was a point of exit.
08:43And then we had a second set of matching shoe prints that went around the side of the house.
08:51The footwear impression had this wavy tread and it had a circle in the ball of the foot area.
08:59We take photographs of the impression to give to investigating officers.
09:04It was a tread pattern that was, to me, easily recognizable as a casual sneaker.
09:09It's virgin snow, so this likely was from the assailant leaving the scene.
09:16That's why that one shoe imprint impression is so important, because it's just absolutely pristine.
09:22So based on that information, we began an initial tracking of the suspect.
09:29There was no murder weapon discovered at the scene, so one would have to believe that the suspect was still armed.
09:34Officers were looking for footprints in the snow, the broken branches, property that he might have stolen and discarded.
09:45Things that didn't belong there.
09:49Additionally, a safe police helicopter was put in the air.
09:52All patrols were on the lookout in this area.
09:54And we had canines to find the assailant.
10:00Investigators had followed the trail, starting where he exited through the broken window.
10:09Ultimately, where they lost the trail in the cranberry block.
10:12After seeing what he did to the victim, I would say that there was a good possibility if he encountered someone, he would repeat his actions.
10:27What's this killing personally, given the brutality that was involved in this crime?
10:37Or was it just a total random act of violence?
10:41Someone who was out for blood.
10:42We didn't know what we were up against with this killer who had fled the scene.
11:01If he was bold enough to kill Tara Gillen on New Year's Eve, he could do it again.
11:05It was a heavy police presence, cruises going up and down the streets.
11:11There were helicopters up and canines.
11:14Living in a small town, word travels very fast.
11:18Everywhere we went, that's all everybody was talking about.
11:24I didn't think that something like that would be possible, just because of the atmosphere in our town being so peaceful.
11:35A lot of time was spent with families and friends and cookouts and backyard parties and, of course, rooting for all the Boston sports teams that might have been playing at the time.
11:46It's a small town, a lot of working people, cranberry bogs.
11:49Middivore would not be the type of town where you'd find a vicious murder.
11:56One of the things that investigators will look at is the neighbors within the immediate area.
12:01So when detectives were advised that there was a registered sex offender living in the home immediately behind the victim's house,
12:12we raced to the house hoping that this could be the break we needed.
12:16There's the belief that this person could have been watching her while she was home for the holidays.
12:29Stalking her, watching her every move.
12:36This was a slam dunk.
12:37A sex offender living directly behind the victim.
12:47But the resident advised them that the sexual offender was no longer there because he was currently incarcerated.
13:17Whenever you have an investigation or homicide, your chances of solving it within the first 48 hours are 80%.
13:27From there, it begins to go down quickly with each ensuing day.
13:32So you flood the neighborhood with investigators.
13:36You're talking to neighbors.
13:37You're talking to friends.
13:39You're trying to get as much information as you can.
13:41We were working down the street, knocking on doors, trying to get information, when we were approached by a neighbor.
13:52This neighbor advised detectives he found that door was open to his hayloft.
13:57Once detectives were told that the door to this hayloft was always kept shut.
14:18They figured it would be a good thing to check it out to see if someone was possibly hiding up there.
14:23One of the detectives was shown the open door by the owner of the property.
14:31The detective went up into the loft to check it out.
14:33Oh, come on, come on...
14:52Whoa, come on...
14:56?
14:59THE END
15:29There was nothing
15:30It was just four cobwebs
15:32Up in the haylock
15:33While detectives went to a house
15:47A few doors down from the scene of the crime
15:49The residents stated that
15:52Something odd did happen earlier in the week
15:59She stated that when she was sleeping
16:08She heard a noise
16:10She pulled back the curtain
16:21Didn't see anything
16:24And went back to sleep
16:27But it did make her feel uncomfortable
16:34As she felt that someone could be watching her
16:37This is a lead that had to be considered
16:40Because the neighbor lived so close to the victim
16:44That it was a possibility that she could have been
16:46Watched by the perpetrator
16:48And he was just hunting for his perfect victim
16:51The local detective was asked
16:57Who in this neighborhood could be involved
16:59In something like this
17:00The detective talked about one individual
17:03Who in the past had committed some vandalism
17:06It was a rumor
17:09Although never confirmed
17:10That he actually pulled a knife out
17:13On his parents
17:14At some particular point in time
17:16That individual
17:19Lived approximately a mile away
17:20From the Gillens
17:21And to our amazement
17:26Shoe prints
17:27At the crime scene
17:28Matched a different set of shoe prints
17:32Found close to this kid's house
17:34One of the things that I do
17:39Is footwear comparisons
17:41Between shoes
17:42And impressions left behind at the scene
17:44My goal is to identify the shoe
17:47Not only the manufacturer
17:49But the actual model of the shoe
17:51In this particular case
17:53It was made by Puma
17:55Which is an athletic shoe company
17:57I contacted the factory
18:00And ironically it was located here in Massachusetts
18:03So right away
18:07They were able to get back to me
18:08And said
18:09Hey listen
18:10This was a very unique shoe
18:12This is a prototype
18:14This didn't even make production
18:15There's one shoe
18:17There's one killer
18:18Find the shoe
18:19Find the killer
18:20During those initial hours
18:31Of that search
18:32For Tara's killer
18:33We learned about
18:37A young man
18:37Jonas Fell
18:39This is a kid
18:40That according to the police
18:41It had repeated
18:42Interactions with
18:44He was well known to them
18:46And he lived less than a mile
18:48From Tara Gillum
18:49We had shoe prints
18:52At the crime scene
18:54That matched
18:55Shoe prints
18:56That brought us
18:57Nearly to the
18:57Fell house
18:58In that direction
18:59And very close to it
19:01When detectives
19:03Hear that type of information
19:04Right away
19:05They perk up
19:06Here we have
19:07A troubled kid
19:08The vandalism
19:10Potentially rumor
19:11That he's pulled a knife
19:12And here we have
19:13A stabbing
19:14That's occurred
19:15To Tara
19:16We decided
19:20To immediately
19:21Go over to
19:22This individual's house
19:23And conduct
19:25An interview
19:25As we arrived
19:29At that house
19:29It was early morning
19:30It was obvious
19:32That a party
19:33Had taken place
19:34The evening before
19:34Evidence of bottles
19:36And cans
19:36From a get together
19:37During an interview
19:42With Mr. Fell
19:43Jonas' father
19:44We learned
19:45That his son
19:46Had hosted
19:47A New Year's Eve party
19:48At the house
19:49In the basement
19:49The night before
19:50As far as he knew
19:53It was just
19:54A regular party
19:54With the kids
19:55He had said
19:59That he
19:59The father
20:00Had gone out
20:00The night before
20:01With his wife
20:02They ultimately
20:03Come home
20:04Around 9 o'clock
20:05Or so
20:06And they found
20:07Jonas at the house
20:08And there was
20:09Nothing out of sorts
20:10Or caused any
20:11Reason for concern
20:13By him
20:14Jonas had stayed
20:16There the entire time
20:17But one of the things
20:22Investigators
20:22Still had questions about
20:24Was did Jonas
20:25Pull a knife out
20:26On them
20:26In any particular
20:27Time at all
20:28He told them
20:32That that was
20:33Just a rumor
20:34That was going
20:34Around the town
20:35It had never happened
20:36So in following
20:41The footprints
20:42From the Gillen house
20:43To Jonas' house
20:44We had to be
20:45Concerned with the fact
20:46That the killer
20:47Could be one of
20:48The party goers
20:49Could the assailant
20:53Be somewhere
20:55In the neighborhood
20:55Perhaps even
20:56Watching us
20:57We just didn't know
20:59What we were told
21:07What we were told is
21:07This group of individuals
21:08Met up at the local
21:09McDonald's
21:10They got together
21:11Around the 7 o'clock
21:12Hour
21:12And then returned
21:13To Jonas' house
21:14For a planned
21:15New Year's Eve party
21:16We know from our interviews
21:23That these party goers
21:24Drank beer
21:25They had Goldschlager
21:27That they played the games
21:28That these youngsters
21:29Would play
21:30In terms of drinking games
21:31But nothing ever
21:32Got out of hand
21:33We stopped by the party
21:44Around 9
21:45It was pretty early on
21:47In the night
21:48Because we had plans
21:49To go out afterwards
21:50There was about
21:5220 or so kids
21:54There when we stopped there
21:56Jonas was a friend
21:58Of my brother's
21:59It was more so
22:00My brother's group
22:01Of friends
22:01Seemed like they were
22:03Having fun
22:04Everybody was in
22:05Good spirits
22:05But it was just
22:08A crowded group
22:09Of younger kids
22:10So we left
22:11I absolutely did not
22:15Think anything
22:16That was going on
22:17Was unusual in our own
22:18During the course
22:25Of talking with
22:26These party goers
22:27A common theme
22:28Started to develop
22:29Several individuals
22:31Indicated
22:32One particular
22:34Individual
22:34Got into an argument
22:36And ended up
22:37Leaving the party
22:38Early
22:38This individual
22:42Was intimately involved
22:43With his girlfriend
22:44At the party
22:45And at some point
22:49In time
22:50Before he finished
22:51She went to use
22:52The restroom
22:53And then never returned
22:55So he became
22:56Upset at that
22:57And this is around
23:07The time
23:08That that
23:08Altercation
23:09Or that verbal
23:10Confrontation
23:11Occurred
23:11So whether he was
23:13Upset
23:13And got into it
23:15With his girlfriend
23:16Or just
23:16Was being an ass
23:18Because he was upset
23:19It was not clear
23:19To us
23:20But he was asked
23:21To leave the party
23:22By Jonas
23:23So he left
23:28The house
23:28Upset
23:29His girlfriend
23:30Went with him
23:31Trying to talk him
23:32Into coming back
23:32To the party
23:33But was unsuccessful
23:34It was a cold evening
23:36She got cold
23:37And she returned
23:37To the party
23:38And actually remained
23:39There the rest of the night
23:40We didn't know
23:46If this was just
23:47Some angry kid
23:48Who ended up
23:49Going home
23:49Or if this was
23:51Our actual killer
23:52Less than 24 hours
23:59After Tara's murder
24:01The name Ryan Burgess
24:06Was given to us
24:07As an individual
24:09Who had attended
24:10The party
24:10Partially
24:11In between the
24:149 and 10 p.m.
24:15Hour
24:15He'd gotten into
24:16The fight with a host
24:17And had left the party
24:20In the direction
24:21In the direction
24:21Of the Gillen home
24:22On his way home
24:27A short amount of time
24:28Before Tara Gillen
24:29Was brutally murdered
24:31And frankly
24:32It had been
24:33The biggest break
24:33Outside of that
24:34Initial shoe impression
24:35That we had gotten
24:36As investigators
24:39Talked to various
24:41Individuals
24:41Who had attended
24:42The party
24:43And they described
24:43Mr. Burgess
24:44As an 18-year-old
24:45As a quiet individual
24:47Kept to himself
24:48Had been bullied
24:49In the past
24:50He wasn't an individual
24:52That had really
24:53Gotten into trouble
24:54Wasn't an individual
24:55To start trouble
24:56Investigators were able
24:58To get in contact
24:59With Ryan's girlfriend
25:00She certainly did admit
25:02That they were together
25:03That night
25:04She went back
25:04To the party
25:05And he went off
25:06On his own
25:06But she just
25:08Didn't think
25:08That he was the type
25:09Of guy that
25:10Could have committed
25:11That type of crime
25:11Investigators started
25:16To check into
25:17Mr. Burgess' background
25:18And they found out
25:20That he didn't live
25:21That far down the road
25:22From the Gillen residence
25:24So right away again
25:26Another indicator
25:27That certainly
25:28They needed to
25:29Talk to Mr. Burgess
25:31Detectives found out
25:33That Ryan Burgess
25:34Was living with
25:35The Shelley family
25:36On Elm Street
25:37My mom was
25:41A big heart
25:42And she had
25:45No problem
25:46Opening her home
25:47To anybody
25:47That needed it
25:48And when my brother
25:51Said Ryan needs
25:52A bed to sleep in
25:53She said absolutely
25:54Ryan actually grew
25:58Really close
25:59With my family
26:00He would
26:01Do anything
26:02For anybody
26:03There were
26:08Some kids
26:09In town
26:09That kind of
26:10Felt like
26:11Ryan was a target
26:12My brother would
26:14Fight some of his
26:15Battles for him
26:16When he needed to
26:17Ryan was just
26:18More of a passive
26:19Kind of kid
26:20Ryan came from
26:22A tough background
26:22But he was
26:24Just the kind of kid
26:25That needed a break
26:26And needed someone
26:27To love him
26:28The night of the party
26:32I'd only seen him
26:33For an instant
26:34When we were leaving
26:37Ryan seemed like
26:38He
26:38Had
26:39Been feeling pretty good
26:42That night
26:45We had
26:46Got back to my
26:47Parents house
26:47It was just
26:48Before midnight
26:49And my son
26:52Was already sleeping
26:52And we were
26:59Just sitting
27:00In the living room
27:00Waiting for the
27:02Ball to drop
27:02Ryan had
27:20Walked in the door
27:21He was
27:30Soaking wet
27:31From his waist down
27:33And
27:36I remember
27:37Looking at him
27:38Like
27:38For lack of better
27:39Words
27:39Can you do it
27:41You know
27:41And he looked at me
27:42And he's like
27:43Oh just
27:44You know
27:44I walked home
27:46And this and that
27:46I made a comment
27:49About him
27:49Being an idiot
27:50Because he walked
27:51All the way home
27:52And we would have
27:53Went and picked him up
27:54If he needed a ride
27:55Brian went into
28:06The bedroom
28:07That he was sharing
28:08With my brother
28:08Changed
28:10Got some sweatpants on
28:11And came out
28:12And sat on the couch
28:13And just talked to us
28:16And I said
28:20You know
28:21We heard
28:22Somebody got stabbed
28:23Up on
28:23Old Center Street
28:24You know
28:25She wrote that way
28:26You stabbed anybody
28:27Tonight
28:27No
28:29No
28:30Just
28:30In his
28:31Normal way
28:32He was a
28:33Fairly quiet kid
28:34He didn't
28:35Talk to you
28:36Like face to face
28:37Because
28:37He was always
28:38Like head down
28:39He just laughed it off
28:57And said
28:58No I have no idea
28:59We left
29:05He went to bed
29:06And the night
29:06Kind of just ended
29:07When we had woken up
29:20My dad called
29:22I need you guys
29:23To come over here
29:24He just said
29:26The state police
29:27Were there
29:27On Elm Street
29:29Obviously
29:31It was a frantic
29:31Drive over there
29:32Because we
29:33Had to know
29:34What was going on
29:35We were
29:36Going through
29:37Every scenario
29:38In our head
29:39You know
29:40What we thought
29:40Had happened
29:41When we got there
29:46There were reporters
29:47Wanting to speak with us
29:49And
29:50It seemed a little bit
29:51Chaotic
29:52With all of the chaos
29:55Going on
29:56Detectives in the house
29:57Getting
29:57Various
29:59Bits of information
30:00It was
30:01Pretty confusing
30:03And emotional
30:04At that time
30:04And
30:06My dad said
30:08Ryan has been
30:08Talked to
30:09About
30:10A break-in
30:11And a murder
30:11He's going to help
30:17Because
30:18He's going to get an accuser
30:19Something he didn't do
30:19How do you know
30:21He didn't do it
30:22I know he didn't do it
30:24I can just help
30:25I was thinking
30:27They must have had
30:27The wrong person
30:28I didn't want to cry
30:33There's no way
30:37He had the capability
30:39Of doing that
30:40He's harmless
30:41He's a good soul
30:43He's got such a big heart
30:44How could he
30:45Possibly
30:46Kill somebody
30:47And
30:47I remember
30:48Talking to the state troopers
30:49And saying
30:50There's no way
30:51He did this
30:51He got the wrong person
30:53When we announced ourselves
31:03At the
31:03Elm Street residence
31:05Mrs. Shelley was surprised
31:07That we were there
31:08We indicated to her
31:10That we had interest
31:11In speaking with
31:12Ryan Burgess
31:13She indicated
31:14That Ryan was
31:15Currently taking a shower
31:17When Ryan came out
31:27Of the shower
31:28We introduced ourselves
31:30To him
31:31We immediately observed
31:34That he had a cut
31:35To his left upper lip
31:37In addition
31:43He had several
31:44Random scratches
31:45On both of his
31:46Forearms
31:47When they asked him
31:49How he got these
31:51Marks
31:51He stated he was
31:52In a fight with somebody
31:53But he couldn't remember
31:54Who it was
31:55And we asked him
31:58If we might be able
31:59To see the clothing
32:00That he was wearing
32:00The night before
32:01He consented to that
32:04And actually let us
32:05Into his bedroom
32:06As investigators
32:10Are going through
32:11His room
32:12And they asked
32:13Mr. Burgess
32:14For the shoes
32:14He had been wearing
32:15The night before
32:16He reached under the bed
32:25Pulled out a pair
32:26Of pumas
32:27Blue pumas
32:28They looked at the shoes
32:34But immediately
32:35Their attention
32:36Was drawn to the outsole
32:37And what they noted
32:40Was the same
32:41Wavy pattern
32:42With the circle
32:43That they had seen
32:44The night before
32:45That was the golden ticket
32:48Those shoes
32:49Matched
32:50Exactly what we saw
32:51At the gilling crime scene
32:52This is when I knew
32:56We had our suspect
32:57We left the residence
33:02And began driving
33:03To the state police barracks
33:05Which was actually
33:06Very close to the
33:07Elm Street location
33:08We said to him
33:11Ryan
33:11We know what happened
33:12Last night
33:13And he said to us
33:14I don't know what
33:15You're talking about
33:16It's Ryan
33:18Did you enter
33:19A house
33:20On Old Center Street
33:21Maybe to get warm
33:23He denied that
33:25And we said
33:27Ryan
33:27Maybe the person
33:28Even let you in
33:29Maybe they even
33:32Came on to you
33:33And to our amazement
33:34He said
33:35Yeah
33:36She came on to me
33:37She led me on
33:38That was the first
33:43Indication from him
33:43Almost a soft admission
33:45That's putting him
33:46At the residence
33:48With Tara
33:48This was big
33:52But we pressed it
33:55A little bit more
33:56We said
33:57Ryan
33:58We think something
33:59Bad happened
34:00In that house
34:01And that's when
34:04Mr. Burgess
34:05Started to come around
34:06And talk about
34:08What had actually
34:09Happened
34:10He said
34:12After a fight
34:13With his girlfriend
34:14He left the fell house
34:15At around 9pm
34:16He actually sees
34:31A car
34:32Back out of a driveway
34:33At the Gillen residence
34:35He went around
34:42The side of the house
34:43He entered a screened
34:56Porch area
34:56Through a storm door
34:57That was unlocked
34:58He could see
35:02A young female
35:03Watching TV
35:05He was surprised
35:18That all of a sudden
35:19She showed up
35:19Right at the door
35:20Face to face
35:23With him
35:23Just through the glass
35:24She asked him
35:29Who he was
35:30And what he wanted
35:31And his response
35:32Was
35:32I'm friends
35:33With your sister
35:33Somehow
35:49The door
35:50Ends up opening
35:51And she tried
35:52To run away
35:53From him
35:54And he caught up
36:08With her
36:08Tara screamed
36:13And when she screamed
36:17He reached out
36:18With both hands
36:19And began strangling her
36:21He continued
36:26To squeeze
36:28And strangle her
36:29She fell to the floor
36:35And while she
36:42Layed there
36:43Gasping for breath
36:44Trying to breathe
36:45According to him
36:46He went out
36:47Into the kitchen
36:48He retrieved
36:51A steak knife
36:52And as Tara
36:53Continued
36:53To try to breathe
36:54She saw him coming
37:01And tried to run
37:03Away from him
37:04But she fell down
37:08On the ground
37:08And that's when
37:24He began
37:25To stab her
37:26At least
37:29Twenty-one times
37:30He had removed
37:38Her pants
37:39And he stated
37:41To us
37:41That he
37:42Had intercourse
37:43With her
37:44Ryan stated
37:47After ransacking
37:48The house
37:49And had his cigarette
37:49He heard a car
37:52Approaching
37:52And at this time
37:54He knew he had
37:54To get out
37:55Of the house
37:55That's when
37:58Worcester Gillen
37:59Had come home
38:00And found her
38:01Horribly horrific
38:05It's just the
38:08Total randomness
38:09Of that evening
38:11To put all these
38:11Pieces in place
38:13With the ultimate
38:14Loss of
38:15Tara's life
38:16Is just
38:16Incomprehensible
38:18When I found out
38:22What had transpired
38:24And how brutal
38:25Everything was
38:26That was a tough
38:27Moment
38:28Several days later
38:35With Ryan's help
38:36He was able
38:37To guide us
38:38To the location
38:39Of the murder
38:40Weapon
38:41Ryan stated
38:42That while he
38:43Was running
38:44He threw
38:44The knife
38:45In the darkness
38:46Into what
38:48He believed
38:48It was a
38:49Cranberry bug
38:50And we started
38:52Walking along
38:53The edge
38:53Of the
38:54Cranberry bug
38:54And somebody
38:57Found it
38:58We found out
39:02That Ryan
39:03Dropped out
39:03Of school
39:03In the
39:04Ninth grade
39:05Got involved
39:06With drugs
39:07And had
39:08A history
39:09Of breaking
39:10And entering
39:10By 1996
39:12His parents
39:13Had actually
39:13Put him out
39:14Of the house
39:14And that's
39:15When he met
39:15The Shelleys
39:16And the Shelleys
39:17Took him in
39:18And gave him
39:19A place
39:20To stay
39:20At their
39:20Home
39:21Ryan Burgess
39:26Was ultimately
39:26Found guilty
39:27Of murder
39:28In the first
39:28Degree
39:29Which amounted
39:30To life
39:31In prison
39:32Without the
39:33Opportunity
39:34Of parole
39:35It does
39:36It does make
39:37Him a monster
39:37But I think
39:38That monster
39:38Was buried
39:39Down deep
39:40Inside
39:40And something
39:42Happened that
39:42Night
39:43And that
39:43All came
39:44Out
39:44I don't
39:46Think that
39:47Ryan
39:47Was able
39:48To digest
39:49What he
39:50Did
39:50I think
39:52I think
39:52I think
39:52The guilt
39:53And the
39:53Remorse
39:54For what
39:55He had
39:55Done
39:55Was just
39:56Unbearable
39:57He destroyed
39:59Not just
40:00Tara's life
40:01But her
40:03Parents
40:03The rest
40:04Of her
40:04Family
40:05That is
40:07Something you
40:07Can't come
40:08Back from
40:08It was only
40:11A couple
40:11Years
40:11After he
40:13Was incarcerated
40:13That he
40:14Took his
40:14Own life
40:14Tara had
40:18Her whole
40:19Life in
40:19Front of
40:19Her
40:20The
40:2120 year
40:21Old
40:22She had
40:22Barely
40:23Begun
40:23To live
40:24It
40:24And her
40:24Life is
40:25Just
40:25Wiped out
40:26For no
40:27Reason at
40:28All
40:28And that's
40:28It
40:28There's
40:30No replay
40:31There's
40:32No pause
40:32There's
40:33No rewind
40:34That house
40:42On Elm Street
40:42Was a
40:43Horror scene
40:43Somebody
40:44Died
40:44Somebody
40:46What
40:46Die
40:47Toothpished
40:47Up the
40:48Nose
40:48And shampoo
40:49In the
40:49Eyes
40:50I've never
40:50Seen a scene
40:51Like this
40:51Before
40:52They only
40:53Left a
40:54Three year
40:54Old
40:54Life
40:55His mom
40:56Had always
40:56Told him
40:56That monsters
40:57Aren't real
40:57She was
40:59Rock
