Lawyers for former American marine pilot Daniel Duggan have told the federal court the attorney general should have refused an extradition request from the United States. Mr Duggan is accused of breaching arms trading laws by training Chinese pilots in South Africa.

00:00Daniel Duggan was allowed to travel from jail in New South Wales to Canberra today for the federal court hearing.
00:08He's been in custody since 2022. His extradition paused for the court action.

00:36The lawyers also said it was extraordinary that he could be extradited from Australia to the United States for an alleged crime in South Africa.
00:46Mr Duggan was escorted into court today with four corrections officers.
00:51His wife says he's highly emotional and they are both holding on to hope.
