00:00This time on Marooned, I'm in Guatemala in one of my favorite environments, the jungle.
00:05It just feels incredible.
00:07But lost and alone in this tropical wilderness,
00:10Big mass of vines and grambles.
00:13I struggle to achieve basic survival.
00:16I'm getting hungry now.
00:17Come on!
00:19After days with no food, I'm driven to desperate measures.
00:23Put some fluids in it.
00:24And as I'm forced to face my deepest primal fears,
00:27There is an enormous crocodile in there.
00:30Looks mean, doesn't it?
00:31I discovered that the toughest battle, I am scared, I am lonely, is always with yourself.
00:38I'm quite nervous right now, and that is, um, that's an understatement.
00:46I'm Ed Stafford.
00:47I've walked the length of the Amazon and survived on a desert island with only a camera to film my adventure.
00:53Ah!
00:55Now, I've set myself a new challenge.
00:58To prove I can make it in some of the world's toughest environments.
01:02Oh my God.
01:04Using only what I find around me.
01:06Already had a kidney and a bit of liver.
01:08I'll be left completely alone for ten days with nothing.
01:13Words cannot describe how I feel right now.
01:16No film crew, no food, no water.
01:19The sun is directly overhead, it's boiling hot.
01:22Not even a knife.
01:24Right, come on, Ed, go and move on.
01:25This time, it's about more than survival.
01:28I want to see if I can thrive.
01:30Yes!
01:30Anywhere.
01:39I'm in Central America, heading deep into the vast rainforests of northwest Guatemala.
01:45My destination, the heart of the Sierra Lacandon, a remote mountain region surrounded by a dense jungle.
01:55I'm traveling up the mighty Usama Sinta River.
01:59On my left is Mexico, on my right, Guatemala.
02:01But centuries before either country even existed, these jungles were home to an ancient civilization, the Maya.
02:1325 kilometers from the drop-off, I have a rendezvous with a shaman of Mayan descent.
02:19Luis will contact his ancestors through a traditional fire ceremony to seek permission for me to enter their lands.
02:25I thought this was a simple permission ceremony.
02:35In fact, the way the fire burns, its strength, the quality of the smoke, tell Luis much about my character and whether my journey will be successful.
02:46And then, he reaches deep into my psyche to reveal some harsh truths.
02:51And he warns me that I will suffer consequences if I'm not more appreciative of my life.
03:11I have to do 13 circles of the fire, and each circle represented throwing fears and apprehensions and negativity into the fire to get rid of it.
03:21And then, I thought, I'm going to use this opportunity.
03:26It was extraordinary.
03:28And I feel honored to have been put through that and to experience that.
03:34I leave the temple ruins full of confidence that I can take this jungle challenge to the next level.
03:40I'm going to make it my mission not just to thrive here, but to try and essentially be like those Mayans, to be like the civilizations of ancient people that used to live in this forest, to try and actually become civilized, so I can actually go through survival, through thriving, and actually try and be civilized, to try and get a level of sustainability in the jungle, which is above and beyond what I've ever achieved before.
04:03Well, that's my aim.
04:04I'm setting the bar high.
04:07Now, it's time to find out if I can really do it.
04:11And my first challenge is lying in wait for me on the beach.
04:14That's quite a decent-sized crocodile, about five foot long.
04:28Okay, let's go.
04:35See you soon.
04:35I'm going to be out here for over a week, but all I'm bringing with me is a set of cameras, a first aid kit, and a satellite phone, in case of emergencies.
04:49That disappearing motor is the last I'm going to hear of any human activity for quite some time.
04:57I am, quite literally, in the middle of nowhere.
05:01My key priorities are water, food, fire, and shelter.
05:07The river's probably polluted, and there's little else to sustain me here.
05:11Add the danger of crocs, and I need to get deeper into the jungle.
05:19No way.
05:20That's extraordinary.
05:24I was just literally filming a walking shot down the beach.
05:29And the tracks.
05:31That are leading down to the water.
05:36I would say that's a jaguar.
05:38These footprints of jaguar have been made today.
05:41This morning, I was just probably before the heat of the day came.
05:46There's big cats in here.
05:48Pound for pound, the jaguar has the strongest bite of all cats, and can attack people.
05:55But I'm at risk from other animals, too.
05:57There are more than 20 species of venomous snake, including the notorious fer-de-lance.
06:04One bite from that could kill me within hours.
06:07There are also poisonous scorpions and spiders to deal with.
06:11Okay, right, let's get out of the sun.
06:14And as I move on, the reality of my situation becomes apparent.
06:19Bollocks.
06:20I've been dropped on a sandbar that's totally surrounded by water.
06:24That's not a significant amount of water.
06:29That really is not.
06:30That changes things somewhat.
06:31If I stay here, I'll starve.
06:36And if I swim, I risk a crocodile attack.
06:39Time to make a tough decision.
06:41Okay, I'm going to have to go in.
06:50Let's get the GoPro out.
06:53Back there, I saw a crocodile going into the water.
06:57And now, lo and behold, I'm going straight in here.
07:03So I just need to move across here fast.
07:05Not far, I'm a very poor swimmer.
07:27I just need to relax.
07:31It's all well.
07:36You're good.
07:40Those crocodiles are up there.
07:53That was, um...
07:54I didn't really want to admit it beforehand, but I'm a terrible swimmer.
07:57And, um, it might not look much, but that's quite a significant amount of water for me to cross.
08:04Um, something about not being a good swimmer makes me quite nervous in water.
08:09Add crocodiles to that equation.
08:11And having just seen jaguar tracks as well to up the ante, I found that a little bit nerve-wracking.
08:16But I'm here, and the kit's dry, and I need to get out of this sun.
08:20The jungle is one of the toughest environments on the planet.
08:26But I've spent years of my life in them, and feel very at home here.
08:31I'm smiling.
08:32Ed, you're at the beginning of a survival challenge, and you're smiling, you nutcase.
08:38Whoa.
08:39I need to watch my feet.
08:41Um...
08:42There's something about the energy of a forest that I just find extraordinary.
08:49You walk in, and it just feels incredible.
08:55My first step is to scout the jungle for the perfect campsite, somewhere with fresh water and lots of food.
09:03The best way to orientate myself is to get to a high point, so I head uphill.
09:07I just want to crest the brow of this next ridgeline, and I'm hoping that there'll be a nice little...
09:21nice little fresh water bubbling brook in the, um...
09:24in the valley on the other side.
09:26There should be.
09:27There's abundant river systems around here, so it really shouldn't be a problem.
09:31I've forgotten how punishing jungles can be.
09:33And with humidity as high as 97%, I'm sweating massively.
09:39Whenever I think I'm at the...
09:41about to crest a ridgeline,
09:45it seems that there's just another little bit to climb.
09:53Little animal tracks.
09:57For the next two hours, I battle my way through thick jungle.
10:01I'm exhausted and dehydrated.
10:04I need to find water, fast.
10:14I'm Ed Stafford.
10:15I'm alone in the mountainous jungles of northwest Guatemala.
10:18It's just...
10:20my feet, at the moment, are slipping on everything.
10:23I haven't eaten all day, and I'm dehydrating rapidly.
10:26I just need to keep pushing until I can find water.
10:30So I'm battling uphill, in search of a vantage point to get my bearings.
10:35There's light at the top there.
10:36Crack on, Ed.
10:37Crack on.
10:38Looks like an area where I can get a view.
10:39Wow.
10:40That view makes it all worthwhile.
10:41Well, that certainly sorts out the water issue.
10:55And with no lack of wood down there, I'd say I've found a great location for a camp.
11:11But it looks like I might have to share it.
11:14There is an enormous crocodile in there.
11:21That is massive.
11:23That is somewhat disconcerting, I have to say.
11:26On the plus side, where there's crocs, there must be fish.
11:30There is no point in looking for a bubbling little brook anymore.
11:33This is up in the ante.
11:35This is making everything a lot more exciting, really.
11:38If I can access the food in here, if I can make fish traps to catch the big fish, that would be extraordinary.
11:46If I head down there, the land is flatter as well, so more access to the lake.
11:51Here I'm about 150 meters above it, which is bonkers.
11:55Then that's the new plan, isn't it?
11:59Get down to the lake shore, build a home.
12:04With this discovery, I'm convinced I can thrive here.
12:08And there's even that bubbling brook.
12:12I have degraded myself.
12:14I'm afraid of him, can't find a good camp site.
12:15I have negroes everywhere.
12:16I have to turn my head in here.
12:21Look at that.
12:29I have onde Gerry's looking and getting for...
12:33Fun!
12:39it's beautiful this looks like a sinkhole to me created when a cave collapsed thousands of years
12:49ago the Maya believed they were entrances to the spirit world and threw offerings into the water
12:56and with a lake this beautiful why not create a house that overlooks it I'll need a fire to keep
13:07crocs and other predators away but first priority is a shelter to keep everything dry I'm going to
13:15make a basic bivouac in this case I'm going to use the trees here to support the frame the jungle is
13:23rich with building materials string perfect for tying off the cross beams okay that's a solid frame
13:35built in about two hours
13:37it's the rainy season so I'm going to need to roof my shelter with thick palm fronds to keep me dry
13:47but it's not finished and it's taken so long I've had no time to find food or make fire
13:55as night approaches and as the shaman predicted my optimism gives way to negativity
14:02right now in this damp forest when the sun goes and the clouds come and the rains fall
14:10and all of the forest floor is wet and everything feels wet and it's slightly cold I'm if I'm honest
14:15and there's mosquitoes buzzing in your ears and the shelter's not finished and you're going to have to
14:20cower like an animal at the back of it in order to stay dry tonight if it rains something about that
14:27that
14:27I'm not enjoying
14:33the temperature drops sharply at night and as the heavens break
14:52I'm too cold and hungry to sleep
14:57lift yourself head lift yourself
15:02but a new day is a new start
15:20got through the night which is great and um how the monkeys are calling again
15:27sun's just cresting over the um hills and today I'm going to finish my shelter make sure it's big
15:33enough to get fire in it and then make my fire if I've done both of those two things by the end of
15:39the day finish my shelter and made a fire I'm going to be happy man
15:42making fire in a damp rainforest is always tough to increase my chances I need to dry out the wood
15:50and kindling in the sun and while that dries I finish the shelter
15:54that took a lot of work but it's um
15:59it's just utterly essential really
16:01next up a fire and I'm using the bow drill method
16:06so I've got myself a drill
16:08I've got a bearing block that's what you call the bit that you put the weight on top of with your left hand
16:13I have a hearth
16:15the final component
16:17the wood needs to be strong enough to take the pressure
16:21and more importantly bone dry
16:23I labour all afternoon
16:28but I just can't get an ember of this damp wood
16:31so close
16:33and relax
16:35and relax
16:37it is what it is
16:46as the skies open
16:48it's game over
16:50but at least my shelter will stop the fire lighting kit getting even wetter
16:54I think tomorrow my revised plan is to get up early and do a bit of exploration
17:04I feel like I've been just doing the survival priorities and haven't really seen the lake
17:09or explored it for food
17:12I'm getting hungry now
17:14it's day four
17:24I've got water and shelter but I haven't managed fire or food yet
17:27I'm up early this morning just exploring around the edge of the lake looking for maybe food sources
17:34anything that I can find really
17:36because the sun hasn't penetrated the clouds yet
17:44so I can't dry out the fire kit
17:46so I can't do that
17:47so it seems to be a sensible thing to do
17:52and finally the rainforest delivers a little treat
17:56it might look very mouldy but
18:01it tastes incredible
18:03sugars
18:08I hadn't realised how much I've been craving sugars until I bit into that
18:12excuse me for a second
18:19I can't speak
18:21okay
18:28this is a guava treat
18:31and there's quite a few on the ground
18:36at last
18:42life seems instantly better
18:46what I really need now is protein
18:49but as I hunt around for more food
18:51I get the distinct impression that I'm not alone
18:54something definitely just scooted out of there
19:04and the howlers above me are quite active
19:09the howler monkeys
19:24the howler monkeys
19:26whatever spooked the monkeys
19:41has slipped away
19:42it was probably too fast for me to catch anyway
19:45down here
19:48just saw this glimpse of red
20:01really really bright red
20:03and it's the abdomen of a tarantula
20:07this is a Mexican red rump tarantula
20:11and it can deliver a nasty bite
20:13but it also has another ingenious form of defence
20:16it can use its back legs to fire a cloud of irritating barbed hairs
20:21into the face of its attacker
20:22got it
20:23got it
20:23I've got it
20:24I'm going to stop its back leg
20:27surely
20:28kill that
20:29I've got a tarantula
20:31food
20:32ha ha
20:33yes
20:35ok
20:39indigenous people used to eat tarantulas
20:42literally put them in the fire
20:45sear off the hairs
20:47they're meant to be a delicacy
20:49I'm starving
20:51so starving
20:52that a tarantula looks like a tasty meal
20:55but to cook it
20:57I need to get that fire going
20:58it is going to work
20:59it is going to work
21:03come on
21:06the wood's been drying in the sun all morning
21:09and as it's not raining now
21:11this could be my moment
21:13I think I might have one
21:33yes
21:34I have
21:35yes
21:41amazing
21:42ha ha
21:46I didn't want another night without heat and light
21:50you know
21:51it's frustrating sometimes
21:53it really is
21:54like the jungle's the jungle
21:56and you can never guarantee
21:57to make fireball friction in the jungle
21:59it's just so wet
22:01now I can cook my first hot meal
22:04in three days
22:05fire
22:11fire fire
22:13important to get the hairs off
22:16I feel
22:16we've never eaten a tarantula before
22:20it's not exactly the banquet
22:24I'd been fantasizing about
22:26but I should be grateful for small mercies
22:28you can eat nettles
22:30can't you
22:31if you pass them through the flame
22:32so tarantula legs
22:34I'm sort of working on the same basis
22:36you can see the white
22:45it's actually steaming
22:47that's alright
22:50that's not bad actually
22:54more meat than I thought
22:59and the abdomen
23:03which is the last part left
23:05I'm a bit scared of the urticating hairs
23:26but it should have burnt them well
23:28I hope my first hot meal doesn't make me sick
23:31because if it does
23:32I'm a long way from hell
23:34I'm Ed Stafford
23:39in a survival situation
23:40I'll eat pretty much anything
23:42but tarantula is one of the weirdest food choices I've made
23:45at least I didn't get sick
23:48the legs are delicious
23:49and the body's delicious
23:50a bit like crab
23:50I would say
23:51giant tarantulas are like eating crabs
23:54so
23:55halfway through my time in the rainforest of Guatemala
23:58things are starting to come together
24:00I've managed to get fire
24:02water
24:03and a shelter too
24:04but as always
24:05the biggest battle
24:07has been with myself
24:08everyone thinks that survival
24:11is about killing snakes
24:13or lighting fires
24:14or making shelters
24:14it's not
24:15it's all up here
24:16it's all about
24:17holding your own hand
24:18through situations
24:19being bold enough to say
24:20I am scared
24:21I am lonely
24:22I'm not enjoying this
24:24but it's alright
24:26because
24:27I'm going to look after myself
24:29and I think that's
24:30that's a step above
24:31in terms of honesty
24:33in terms of real life truth
24:34of how a survival situation works
24:36it's not all about
24:37He-Man heroics
24:39it's about being honest with yourself
24:42and looking after yourself
24:43so that's my commitment
24:44for the rest of the trip
24:45to tie back in
24:47to keep on tying back in
24:48with that Mayan ceremony
24:49which said
24:50be grateful
24:51and meditate
24:52right now
24:55I'm really grateful for this lake
24:57I can see it's teeming with fish
25:00if I can find a way to catch them
25:03then I will go beyond surviving
25:05and into thriving
25:06I'm going to make myself a raft
25:09I just figure
25:10you can't have
25:11something as beautiful
25:12and as big
25:13and majestic
25:13as this lake
25:14and not try and get out onto it
25:16and I think that might
25:17open up fishing possibilities
25:19I begin searching
25:20for building materials
25:22but I'm so hungry
25:23I'm also constantly
25:25on the lookout
25:25for something to eat
25:26no matter how small
25:28okay this little hole down here
25:36is perfect
25:36you can
25:37I can see it's an active hole
25:39because um
25:40because there's no folias
25:42around the entrance
25:42there's no spider's webs over it
25:44I put a bark string snare
25:47over the entrance
25:47and it should catch
25:49whatever it is
25:49going in or out
25:50two minutes that took
25:54okay
25:56next
25:58let's build a raft
25:59I'm not a seafaring man
26:00but I'd say
26:01the key quality you want
26:02in a raft
26:03is that it floats
26:04so I need to find
26:05some dry logs
26:06in a damp rainforest
26:07I'm trying to use
26:09what's called
26:10hanging deadwood
26:11which is
26:11trees that have fallen over
26:12but they've been
26:14held up
26:15from actually hitting
26:16the forest floor
26:16which means
26:17predominantly they're dry
26:19they're not waterlogged
26:21as if they'd been
26:22lying on the floor
26:22the thought of a fish supper
26:26keeps me motivated
26:27as I drag a dozen hefty logs
26:29to the lakeside
26:30I'm building a catamaran
26:34tying bunches of logs
26:36together with vines
26:37and this old plank
26:42will be a handy bit of decking
26:44that's pretty cool
26:46I'm happy with that
26:47but basically
26:48that's ready to launch
26:49tomorrow
26:50I'm just gonna go
26:56and check my trap
26:57gosh
27:01how good is that
27:03right
27:06supper as it gets dark
27:09poor storm about to come in
27:18let's get this bad boy
27:20cooked
27:20simplest of little snare traps
27:24and I've got
27:24the tiniest
27:25but most nutritious
27:27of meals
27:28mouse on a stick
27:31okay
27:34in for a penny
27:36in for a pound
27:37head's nice
27:46that is tasty
27:50tasty little mouse
27:53satisfied
27:55after my morsel of mouse
27:57my thoughts turn to tomorrow's big launch
28:00to test my new raft
28:02if she see where the
28:04only time will tell
28:07alright that's me
28:10goodnight
28:11it's day six
28:16my mission
28:17is to catch fish
28:18out on the lake
28:19and tap into a limitless
28:21supply of food
28:22I'm going to try
28:24spearfishing
28:25before I launch
28:31I set up my camera
28:33on the viewpoint
28:33seeing a croc again
28:40makes me wonder
28:41if this is such
28:42a good idea
28:43hmm
28:47am I going to need
28:48a bigger boat
28:49it is important
28:50really important
28:51I think
28:52to master this
28:53lagoon
28:54to go into the sink
28:56because this is where
28:58food is
28:58this is
28:59this is the only way
29:00I think
29:00I'm going to be able to get
29:01an abundant amount
29:02of fish
29:03is to
29:04get out onto the water
29:05and
29:06and start owning it
29:07really
29:08that said
29:09I just hope it's going to work
29:13if I'm really honest
29:14I'm quite
29:16nervous
29:16right now
29:17and that is
29:18that's an understatement
29:19it's the moment of truth
29:21I could be about to improve
29:23my living standards
29:24massively
29:25or
29:26go down
29:26with my ship
29:27it's in the water
29:29it's in the water
29:39it's floating
29:48and it's just above the
29:54it works
29:59it works
30:02it works
30:07a perfect example
30:14of who dares
30:15wins
30:16shows out
30:18what a lack of confidence
30:19I've got in myself
30:20I didn't think this was going to work
30:22but it does
30:23that's extraordinary
30:24right
30:26keep an eye out
30:27for crocodiles
30:28Ed
30:29part of me is saying
30:32don't dangle your legs
30:33through here
30:34and kneel on the board
30:34because
30:35because there's crocodiles
30:38in here
30:38okay
30:40relax
30:41relax
30:42it doesn't matter
30:43that you can't swim
30:44nor that
30:45nor that your raft
30:50is semi-submerged
30:50none of that matters
30:51this is working
30:53it doesn't matter
30:54there's crocodiles in here
30:56right
30:56there's my camp
30:59extraordinary
31:12absolutely
31:14the things you find yourself doing in life
31:16hey
31:16paddling across a crock-infested
31:20lagoon in the middle of the
31:22jungle
31:23that
31:32looks mean
31:34doesn't it
31:35just need a fish to come now
31:38after an hour out on the raft
31:59I have to admit defeat
32:00I'm back to square one
32:03so I come up
32:06with a new plan
32:07this is actually
32:10an ancient Mayan
32:12type of fish trap
32:13it just uses vines
32:14and I'm going to lay them out
32:16on the floor
32:17and then
32:18sort of plait them into
32:20essentially it's a wicker basket
32:22the Maya managed to thrive
32:28in this landscape
32:29using only the materials
32:31they could find
32:31the techniques I'm using here
32:34probably haven't changed
32:36for thousands of years
32:37the basket takes me
32:48the rest of the day
32:49but it's potentially the key
32:52to being able to live here
32:53permanently
32:53I need it to catch fish tomorrow
32:56and if I fail
32:58my whole mission here
32:59will have come to nothing
33:00coming up
33:04I'm back on the lake
33:06it's make or break time
33:09I'm almost getting teary
33:11this is ridiculous
33:12I'm in the Guatemalan rainforest
33:18as my journey began
33:20a shaman warned me
33:21that the jungle
33:22would test my mental strength
33:24and he was right
33:25I'm getting hungry now
33:27I'm really getting hungry
33:28it's the end of day three
33:29in for a penny
33:30in for a pill
33:31food has been scarce
33:33and I'm barely surviving
33:35let alone thriving
33:36but I'm determined
33:38to turn things around
33:39okay
33:40it's gonna work
33:40it's gonna work
33:41it's gonna work
33:42it's gonna work
33:43it's my last day
33:44and in a final bid
33:45for success
33:46I'm trying to catch fish
33:47from the lake
33:48but first
33:49I need bait
33:50that might be
33:51very useful
33:52right there
33:53is a big old termite nest
33:55the people of Guatemala
33:58have used termites
33:59as bait
33:59for centuries
34:00time
34:04for some fishing
34:05Mayan style
34:07okay
34:13operation termite nest
34:17fishing
34:17got my basket
34:19got my termite nest
34:20and
34:22there's every chance
34:26of working
34:26actually
34:27I put chunks
34:32of the nest
34:32into my basket
34:33there's a few termites
34:36that fell out
34:37from
34:37the basket
34:41loads of little fish
34:43started coming
34:43towards it
34:44in terms of little fish
34:45it really does work
34:47hopefully
34:49that in turn
34:50will attract bigger fish
34:51it's not very complicated
35:00this fishing
35:01method
35:01I really like it
35:02and it seems to be
35:04attracting fish
35:05quickly
35:05which is good
35:06because
35:06I've never been one
35:08for that much patience
35:09to be honest
35:10now
35:12I just keep
35:13throwing the basket
35:13in
35:14and hauling it out
35:15it's hard work
35:17but surely
35:17at some point
35:18a big fish
35:19will swim in
35:20looking for a termite dinner
35:22but after a morning
35:25hauling the basket
35:26in and out of the water
35:27in the baking heat
35:29with no results
35:30I'm beginning
35:31to lose my patience
35:32at the moment
35:33the fish are not
35:34coming to me at all
35:35but then
35:38oh that was a big fish
35:39that was a big old fish
35:42that just came past them
35:43I wonder
35:49I wonder
35:50this might just work
35:51after all
35:51suddenly
35:53big fish are
35:54all around the basket
35:55it's in
35:57it's in
35:58it's in
35:58it's in
35:59got a fish
36:10amazing
36:11it's a beautiful catfish
36:19I need to gut it
36:22but without a knife
36:23I'm reduced to using
36:24a thorn
36:25as a needle
36:25I'm just thinking
36:27I can use this needle
36:28to just essentially
36:30perforate a line
36:31down the chest
36:33of the catfish
36:34well I could
36:37except
36:37it's so tough
36:38it's just
36:39snuck the needle
36:42completely
36:43that was my little idea
36:44that's tough
36:48that is
36:49super super tough
37:07is the belly
37:08of a catfish
37:09in fact
37:17the best
37:18needle that I've got
37:20of course
37:21is the catfish's own spines
37:22that come out the side
37:23if I snap
37:25snap this off
37:30aha
37:40now I've got a needle
37:42that's tough enough
37:42hopefully you can see this
37:46but I'm literally
37:46just gonna
37:47put a series of
37:50perforations
37:53down the belly
37:55incredibly tough skin
37:57essentially
38:04everything that's inside
38:06will come out
38:08what a reward
38:29for all this time spent
38:30trying to scratch a living
38:32out of the jungle here
38:33and eventually
38:34the lake
38:36the sinkhole
38:37the entrance
38:38to the ancient
38:39Mayan underworld
38:39gives me this
38:41I finally cracked it
38:43with my raft
38:44and my basket
38:45I think I could
38:46happily thrive here
38:47just like the Mayans
38:48centuries ago
38:49just building the fire
38:51up a little bit
38:51because in order
38:53to cook on the embers
38:54I need to have had
38:54a big enough
38:55hot enough fire
38:56beforehand
38:57so that the fish
38:58can sit on really
38:58hot embers
38:59look at that
39:12bad boy
39:13that's my first
39:16proper meal
39:16in more than a week
39:17and suddenly
39:18I feel like a winner
39:20love it
39:22absolutely love it
39:24this is a deep
39:25wheel like
39:26it's my playground
39:26look at my feet
39:27they are ridiculous
39:29but who cares
39:31who cares
39:33I'm cut
39:34I'm muddy
39:35my hands smell of fish
39:37fish guts
39:39and entrails
39:40but I've got a full
39:42belly of fish
39:43and
39:44my brain's working
39:46again
39:47I can feel it
39:47it's faster
39:48it's utterly faster
39:50eat more fish
39:51it's good for your brain
39:54good for your brain
39:56sometimes
39:58sometimes I despair
40:00of you
40:01I do
40:01you are a bit nuts
40:03Ed
40:03you are a bit nuts
40:05your job
40:06is to
40:07take your clothes off
40:08and walk into a rainforest
40:09and film yourself
40:10struggling
40:10and then eventually
40:12hopefully
40:13driving
40:13what a life
40:16what a life
40:18I am living
40:19and it was in that moment
40:23that I realised
40:25what Luis the shaman
40:26had been saying
40:26that no matter
40:28how tough things
40:29might get
40:30I need to be grateful
40:31for everything
40:32in my life
40:33it seems fitting
40:39that this journey
40:40into the rainforest
40:41would begin
40:42with a fire
40:43and end
40:44with a fire
40:44I decide
40:47to take my basket
40:48my trident fishing spear
40:50and the raft
40:51all the things
40:52I'd spent so much time
40:53making
40:54and burn them
40:55in a ceremonial fire
40:57as a way of saying
40:59thanks
40:59I'm almost getting teary
41:04this is ridiculous
41:04I
41:05feel so much
41:08that this is the right thing
41:09to do
41:10I know this is the right thing
41:11to do
41:12everything I've made
41:15I give back
41:16everything of value
41:18to me
41:18I've given
41:19it does make sense to me
41:28I know about staying present
41:32I know about being aware
41:33I know about meditation
41:35and I know about mindfulness
41:36I don't claim to be an expert
41:38on any
41:39but what I do know is
41:41before coming here
41:42I was looking
41:43for the one little key
41:45that would allow me
41:46to stay mindful
41:48stay alert
41:49stay aware
41:51of everything
41:52throughout the day
41:54and the answer
41:56is gratitude
41:56I think if I hold on
42:02to gratitude
42:02that's the way
42:04to stay
42:04humble
42:05that's the way
42:07to stay connected
42:08to everything
42:08after more than a week
42:19in the jungles
42:20of Guatemala
42:20I can honestly say
42:22that I proved
42:23I can thrive here
42:24I am ready
42:25to go home
42:26I am so
42:38so looking forward
42:40to being
42:40properly dry
42:41and sleeping
42:43in a bed
42:43with Egyptian
42:45cotton sheets
42:46and Bavarian
42:47goose down
42:48duvet
42:49that's my dream
42:50I thought
42:52thriving here
42:53would be a walk
42:53in the park
42:54but actually
42:55the jungle reminded me
42:56that survival
42:57is largely
42:58a state of mind
42:59and for that
43:02I'll be eternally grateful
