00:00Ready, Hev. So just looking towards Heather, I think.
00:03So we're at the Greek and Flower Club's monthly meeting. Can you tell me a bit about the club?
00:08Yes, this is our 65th anniversary. We started in 1960 in Wellington.
00:13Started by Odessa Melanion, who was the solicitor's mother, who got to group her friends together
00:22and decided to have a flower club. She was a keen gardener as well, and started on a Wednesday afternoon
00:29because they were all business people, and we've kept that tradition and still needs on a Wednesday
00:34all these years later. A different venue. We're now in the Belmont and have been for many years.
00:40How long have you both been members? I'm about 30-odd years. I'm about 18 now.
00:47She's also in the Oldsbury Club, so we spread ourselves around a bit.
00:53And what made you decide to come along to the club?
00:55Well, we are flower rangers, aren't we? And gardeners, so one goes hand in hand, really.
01:01You have to grow everything. You don't get a lot of foliage with flowers, you may or may not be aware.
01:08So you have to grow everything that you don't want to spend money on as well.
01:12And flowers have terribly expensive.
01:14Yeah, so, very expensive now. But everything is.
01:20And you have a demonstrator every month?
01:22We have a demonstrator every month except August, and then most people are gardening or on holiday in August.
01:28And that's been the tradition from the beginning.
01:30Yes, I think most clubs are like that.
01:32Yes, yes.
01:33Do you get lots of ideas and inspiration from the demonstrators?
01:36The demonstrators gives us lots of ideas.
01:37We try and get new and old, and people who are probably more local to us now,
01:42because travel has become quite an issue too.
01:44In the old days, we used to put demonstrators up in our own houses, but that's no longer the case now.
01:51With motorways, they mostly want to go home.
01:54Are you always looking for new members?
01:56Always.
01:57By the three of them in the afternoon.
01:59Both of you, we have a man.
02:01You won't be on your own.
02:03You can just come along, then.
02:04Just come along, yes.
02:05And if they like us, they stay.
02:07Mostly they do.
02:08Well, yes, I do.
02:10And it's good that it's an afternoon for the older ladies, or gentlemen.
02:15Yes, but it's not too good for the youngsters, because mostly they work.
02:19If anybody wants to join us, most welcome.
02:22A cup of tea and a biscuit, and no parking part charges in Wellington.
02:26And you can get here by train, bus, or whatever.
02:29Bike.
02:30Yes.
02:31Although it would be a bit difficult taking home anything you want.
02:34You win a raffle prize, and you're going home on a bike, it might be an issue.
