00:00White has an extra piece, but our pawn is under attack and our knight is under attack.

00:09In the middle game, or in the opening, you definitely have to pay attention to this threat

00:15because knight is more valuable than a pawn.

00:18But we're in the endgame, so protecting the knight doesn't do us any good.

00:22If we protect the knight and black takes the pawn, that's a theoretically drawn position.

00:26Rook and knight cannot win against a lone rook.

00:30So, but how can we benefit from keeping this pawn alive?

00:35Because it's not simply a pawn's endgame where pawn is rushing.

00:39Black has a rook, and this rook can just go around and stop our pawn.

00:45The trick is that we play a quiet move, a3.

01:01If rook goes back on h1 or g1, then rook d1 will exchange rooks,

01:06and our pawn is unstoppable, while the black pawn can easily stop because our king is too close.

01:14But instead of moving to the first rank, rook h1 or g1,

01:18black rook can go back to f4.

01:21And then we understand why our pawn moved not to a4, but to a3.

01:27Sometimes it's very important.

01:28You make just a small move.

01:32One square.

01:33But it has devastating effect because this pawn protects square b4.

01:41And after rook b3 check, king goes on c2 or a2, it doesn't matter.

01:45Then we'll go rook b4.

01:46And rook, black rook is trapped.

01:49Technically, it's not trapped because black can exchange rook.

01:52Either taking on b4, and after a b4, our pawn is unstoppable.

01:56Or moving rook on g4, and then after exchange.
