Gerardo Manuel & El Humo – Machu Picchu 2000 [1971] (Peru, Psychedelic, Blues Rock)
The second blues-psychedelic album by the Peruvian band, released in 1971, is dedicated, like the first, to a distant, fantastical future: the dawn of a new millennium, when World War III breaks out and the Inca Empire is reborn.
A good Peruvian psychedelic lp from '71. Is largely a fairly mellow affair with tracks like Odd Worlds leading you along with a gentle, funky beat and The Legend of the Lake taking you on a quiet, peaceful journey with the latin shuffle that appears often throughout the lp. Hey Spaniards digs a bit deeper with an awesome fuzz bass dominating the song that betrays the Grand Funk influence found on first lp Apocalypsis, but is a slow moody number and not the wild heavy psych rocker that side A would have benefitted from having at least one track of. One song on the second side has goofy off-speed vocals that make the track a chore to listen to but the pain of that is more than made up for by the final masterpiece called 5.36pm, December 31,1999. It's the only truly hard song on the album and is fast, loud and fuzzy reminding me of fellow peruvians Tarkus. With a great riff and an atomic bomb blast at the finale this is one of my top south american songs ever.
The lyrics are good fun, opening track Machu Picchu Blues has us going back to the secret city apparently to snort peruvian drugs and space out. While Hey Spaniards,Cant You Hear the Incas Crying? and Where Do They Go? along with the above mentioned 31.12.99 illustrate the heavy Inca Apocalypse trip that Gerardo was evidently on at the time.hildisvin Jan 24 2006
