Bogong moths were once a part of Canberra life and then seemed to disappear - but now they're back
Transcript
00:00I think of bogong moths as magical creatures and I think of them flying on winds to their
00:08places where they hibernate over summer, by their thousands, in remote mountaintops and
00:16mountain ranges in the Australian Alps.
00:19Canberra is in the middle of the migration path of the bogong moth, so annually the bogong
00:23moths will take spring winds down from areas west of the Great Divide, past through Canberra,
00:32down towards Kosciuszko, Nemadji and the Victorian Alps as well.
00:36The population did collapse in 2017, 2018, 2019, especially associated with the drought conditions
00:44that were prevalent at that time, but what we've seen in the past few years is quite good spring
00:51rains and I think what's happened there is that that's enabled the population to recruit
00:56more individuals, so now what that equates as is we're starting to see more and more bogongs
01:01coming back through Canberra again.
