00:00And it's an endgame. White has an extra piece, but our pawn is under attack and our knight is under the attack.
00:11In the middle game, or in the opening, you definitely have to pay attention to this threat, because knight is more valuable than a pawn.
00:20But we're in the endgame, so protecting the knight doesn't do us any good.
00:24If we protect the knight and black takes the pawn, that's a theoretically drawn position.
00:28Rook and knight cannot win against a lone rook.
00:33So, but how can we benefit from keeping this pawn alive?
00:37Because it's not simply a pawn's endgame, where pawn is rushing.
00:41Black still has a rook, and this rook can just go around and stop our pawn.
00:47The trick is that we play a quiet move, a3.
00:53It doesn't seem logical. Black simply takes the knight with a check.
00:56But then king g2, and surprise, surprise, the rook that has so many moves cannot avoid the exchange.
01:03If rook goes back on h1 or g1, then rook d1 will exchange rooks.
01:08And our pawn is unstoppable, while the black pawn can easily stop, because our king is too close.
01:15But instead of moving to the first rank, rook h1 or g1, black rook can go back to f4.
01:23And then we understand why our pawn moved not to a4, but to a3.
01:29Sometimes it's very important.
01:30You make just a small move.
01:34One square.
01:34But it has devastating effect, because this pawn protects square b4.
01:43And after rook b3 check, king goes on c2, or a2, it doesn't matter.
01:47Then we'll go rook b4.
01:49And rook, black rook is trapped.
01:51Technically, it's not trapped, because black can exchange rook.
01:54Either taking on b4, and after a b4, our pawn is unstoppable.
01:57Or moving rook on g1.
