This episode goes inside the famous Casino de Monte Carlo, where the present fortunes of Monaco began. Its impressive architecture conjures up an era of exotic glamour, but it no longer provides the vast revenues it once did. They have to work hard to attract the new wealthy, especially from Asia, where the approach to gambling is very different. The film follows the build-up to an exclusive soiree at the casino with a prohibition theme, aimed at the highest rollers from around the world. Prince Albert II and members of his family are in attendance, which adds to the attraction of the evening. The princely family is at all times guarded by a private army, the carabiniers. The episode reveals the secret armoury where the guns are stored, observes the carabiniers during firearms practice and sees a new recruit driving the prince's car for the first time

00:00Monaco the miniature nation not much bigger than Hyde Park on the French Riviera where
00:11one in three residents are millionaires in Monaco the helicopters consider like a car
00:19for most of the people living here Prince Albert the sovereign Prince of Monaco agreed
00:28to let cameras film last summer behind the scenes of the royal palace we're calling the
00:34patron the boss and in this private playground of the world's super rich how much would it cost me
00:40to buy the whole box 28,000 euros we meet the billionaire residents and those who serve them
00:48it's a stressor in a rush time yes any idea how much this would cost me per night I don't know
00:56the price of the room in hotel just clean the room for me they are like crazy children you want more
01:04and more and more I wake up every morning I'm like oh my god I'm living in Monaco I'm living here in a
01:10dream oh nearly 800 years ago Prince Albert's ancestor captured this fortress with his army disguised as
01:26monks the family has ruled Monaco ever since and they have kept hold of the army security for the
01:35Prince and the residents is a key part of the country's success and the carabinier du prince are
01:41not just ceremonial in the hidden highly secure basement of their barracks officer Julien Benetton is
01:50arriving for his regular target practice so this is the armory and I want to introduce you the shooting chief
01:59instructor the maréchal Thierry Hamet what if you are here Thierry Hamet you are at the secret part of the
02:09casernes reserved only for the carabiniers she is protected since we have a lot of weapons here you put the
02:18bayonet so this is the arm that we use in the palace to do the parade and also to intervene if needed
02:26this is serious business yes so you're not just uh standing there in your uniform no no for the
02:41tourists no no no no definitely not we are we are an army we are here for the safety of the prince and
02:47his family so that's our main job is to protect them so that's why and in order to do this you need
02:53training we need training exactly yes that's why we train a lot yes all the year how often do you
02:59train depends our job and depend our service but I'm going to shoot at least 10 times a year
03:05the prince himself is leaving his country for a few days can you tell me about the wings yeah
03:16that's for Prince Albert you know double a ah accompanied by just one of his security team his
03:26private jet will take him to a charity bash in Versailles and then on to the United Nations in New York
03:32that's yours he likes to joke Prince Albert has in effect absolute power over one of the richest
03:47countries per head in the world with his own private army at the ready the prince knows he's leaving the
03:53country in safe hands so I'm going to designate the three targets of the gauche to droite the one
04:01the two or the three you're going to shoot on the same target the two! Monaco aims to be one of the
04:12safest places in the world and for its wealthy residents you can't put a price on security
04:18the only view of the arm is often enough to calm the ardor of the one who is in front
04:27Monaco is an area where it is very safe even the idiots know that here we can't do what we want
04:40Aboard his private jet the Prince is working on his address to the UN General Assembly
05:00Monaco has a seat at the UN the same as China a country five million times its size as a small
05:21countries as a city-state we have limited means of influence but we're neutral the Monaco's neutrality
05:30is I think one of our main attributes I think that the role of small countries is to act as go-betweens
05:38between big nations on behalf of the General Assembly I have the honor to welcome to the United Nations
05:46His Seren Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco
05:49And while the Prince speaks to the UN about saving the environment his country is preparing to make
06:02itself even richer in the place where Monaco's financial miracle began in 1863 Prince Charles the
06:10third had this genius idea to allow gambling because it was forbidden in Italy forbidden in France before
06:18we were just peasants with orange clementines and lemons this gambling casino is actually part of the
06:26principality of Monaco an independent state with its own rulers and its own laws the principality in 30
06:32years became terribly rich and after the people of Monaco became very used to see and welcome very rich
06:42people it is interesting to know that none of the citizens pays any taxes in this small but prosperous
06:49community it is also interesting to know that none of the citizens of Monaco is allowed to gamble in the
06:55casino only visitors the casino de Monte Carlo remains a place of world-renowned mystique and is run today by
07:04General Manager Pascal Camien here we are in the famous casino de Monte Carlo built in 1863 in every casino in
07:14the world you don't put clocks because people have to lose control of the time the first railway station
07:21was underneath the casino and people had to go back to Nice and they needed to know that at midnight they
07:29should the last spin had to go and in order to take the last train otherwise they were blocked here in
07:34Monaco that's why we put some clocks in every room what's the maximum stake you're allowed here in the
07:40casino the Monte Carlo we can place on the number up to 3 000 euro which is very high because it's 30
07:51five the game if you hit the number you have to to have a very high amount of money in the casino
07:59some casinos doesn't allow people to to play higher than tonight 150 very special guests have been
08:07invited to the casino for the most exclusive evening of the year with the prince and his sister princess
08:14caroline in attendance and as no money guest citizen is allowed to gamble all the casinos high spending
08:22vvips will of course be foreign our guests are the top player in our casino that's why we invited them
08:30we call them high rollers around midnight all the dealers will be seated here so we have a range of
08:37exclusive uh gamblers from from everywhere in the world do you know them all is that your job to
08:44yes of course of course uh we have thousands of uh guests but the uh let's say the two best the 200
08:52best i will i will uh personally know them and sometime i go to to visit them in their country
08:58the theme is secret game so it's a speakeasy people will enter very discreetly in the casino
09:05uh we will uh check if uh our customers will have the right to come in in order to leave the experience
09:14of the uh the prohibition uh excusez-moi le mobilier il vient après la salle de roulette elle est prête
09:26they cannot uh leave the party saying buff it was uh so so no it has to be very unique
09:38and the casino's secret game special evening with its 1920s american prohibition theme is designed with
09:45precisely those highest of high rollers in mind every last detail is attended to from the caviar starter to
09:54the exact choreography of the waiting staff so here everything has to be very precise like uh like
10:03a clock we target the great art of gaming so the the position of the swoon is very important for us
10:22because because because the lectures is detailed and the choice of two nights wines will be carefully
10:28considered here underneath the hotel de paris and the casino 12 meters down lies the most extraordinary
10:36wine cellar this is probably actually one of the biggest private wine cellar in the world we stock more
10:42than 400 000 bottles of wines and alcohol if you have the wine cellar and not the guest in front of you
10:50this is not good this is our specificity in monaco they are rich and they know and they love wine this
10:57is the perfect condition for me designed in 1863 this series of caverns holds many stories just before the
11:07second world war the head wine cellar closed all this corridor with empty bottle they made it look like
11:14there was it was nothing behind of course what they closed all the corridor with empty bottle there's
11:19probably inside i don't know 3000 empty bottle in the corridor and they took one right three right
11:26four right and they stopped and there's the wine cellar where we are going now where there's inside the
11:31greatest wine there's in our company their most special wines which were not found by the germans are kept
11:38safely under lock and key there's the amazing collection chateau margot 1929 this is one of the
11:45ones that instead of course of course of course and they would have drunk it if they found it of course
11:50well it's very nice elsewhere in the cellars other members of the sommelier team are making a final
11:58inspection before the casino's exclusive event for tonight's important invited guests we are going to test the
12:06wine for a special event that will be in the casino two very good wine this one will be around 200 in
12:14euro and this one should be around 400 euro so the guests are getting a good yeah they are good they are
12:22good they are going to be very happy bonjour bonjour bonjour bonjour on deguste on y va
12:33the man who has the difficult task of approving the choices is the casino general manager himself
12:43is it hard work yes it's it's hard work but you can also see that even if it's tiring even if it's
12:49very stressful sometimes we have some pleasure uh here in the wine cellar and it's i think it's the part
12:57i prefer you're not spitting it out no today the casino doesn't come anywhere near raising the 95
13:07percent of national income that it once did it needs to attract new types of gamblers from new parts of
13:13the world and the attempt to understand their new asian client psychology includes regular sessions where
13:20they literally put themselves in their clients seats today as the ballroom is being prepared for
13:26tonight's event they are feeling the buzz of punto banco the preferred asian game at the moment when
13:33they play they are deep in the game they focus on the game and nothing else exists
13:40they can spend days in the casino it's a part of their culture i mean it's pretty different
13:46and being at the guest seats uh it's easier for you to understand what's in their mind when they're
13:53playing asian girls they like to get the most suspense possible this is why they hide the corners
13:59of the cards they hide them and they bat them slowly and they discover the number step by step
14:05and especially if they win so much as to break the bank at monte carlo the winners need to feel safe
14:26as they leave to protect its wealthy visitors and residents monaco has one of the most extensive and
14:33sophisticated cctv systems in the world in police headquarters officer guillaume can see everyone
14:42monaco also has an incredibly strict legal code you can't walk down the street barefoot
14:47or without a shirt and don't even think about trying to bring in a camper van
14:52and if you do break the law monaco has a zero tolerance policy everyone will be prosecuted
15:17it's of paramount importance if you conduct a survey people
15:47not only living in monaco but wanting to move to monaco if you ask them what the main reason
15:51was for their moving here i think in an overwhelming majority would say it's the security and it's the
16:01safety aspect
16:04with seven times more police per head of population and in the uk this security means people are happy to
16:11show off their wealth which makes monaco a center for exclusive goods
16:17one of monaco's top auction houses is run by louise greter it's her job to sell high value items from
16:25art to jewelry well i think here there's definitely more high-end jewelry pieces and watches because
16:31people can wear them on here i think it's probably the only place in the world where people can walk
16:37the streets with you know million dollars around their neck and not be attacked so there are more of
16:44these types of people around and so i think people like to sell in monaco why because they know that
16:50the buyers are probably here or they are here and they're more likely to sell their piece for a higher
16:57price safety and security also enable the royal family to be amongst the most visible in the world
17:05frequently seen at events or even on monaco's streets where they are of course protected by the carabiniers
17:12and wherever the prince goes is driven by the train carabiniers officers today in the palace garage julien
17:20showing fellow officer pierre the ropes there is a lot of quality you need to have to do that job
17:50first be a good driver but then you have to be quiet and discreet because you have to stay in your
17:58place it's more the personality than the drive
18:20so when you're driving the prince for example yeah how does it work do you say hello yes i'm very polite
18:27yeah yeah yeah we say hello say thank you say goodbye that that basic and sometimes more if he wants
18:34he is the chief what sort of things do you talk about yeah it's uh i can say that it's private
18:45in such a respectful and apparently conservative place it's perhaps surprising to head down a side
18:55street and find what some might think of as a subversive new addition to the expensive boutiques
19:02the tattoos aren't really the image of monaco are they isn't it more high heels and designer dresses
19:07i think it's a lot of girls coming maybe from outside the city and they are coming to marry a rich man
19:14but uh at the end it's kind of a deal you know when you are 70 and you have a 20 years old girl like
19:21really nice for sure you know that uh money can be help you know it's not for your it's not because you
19:29are handsome you know it's because you have money in every shops in monaco you have the prince
19:35picture with the princess has prince albert ever come in for a tattoo no no the brother of charlene
19:41actually came but uh never after never maybe one day i hope so
19:51but there is one member of the royal family who is a bit of a regular here
19:54everything is perfect camille gottlieb is one of princess stephanie's daughters making prince albert
20:03her uncle camille's father was a carabinier a palace bodyguard with whom princess stephanie
20:10had a relationship and we do this here i think it's a perfect perfect place okay perfect i started
20:17tattoos when i was uh 17 17 yes did you have to persuade your mother yes yes she was okay with
20:26this so she has tattoos too so it's okay for her ah it's so cool growing up in monte carlo we have a lot
20:36of security everybody knows everybody but it's a little bit weird sometimes to be the granddaughter
20:44from the prince king and grace kelly and the daughter of the princess stephanie we are the royal family
20:52so we have to do a lot of things for monaco so that's good for us i was watching geordie shore
21:03and i love that that's so funny and so so cool but i think my uncle gonna kill me
21:10if they do a reality show here no no i think no it's finished now i'm done we're really strong
21:20it's wonderful oh so cute like the eyes like this okay perfect bye bye nora
21:31more tima is another tattoo parlor regular he is a monaco resident currently studying business
21:42communications so
21:45it's a bit too much for me well it's too aggressive more make it more elegant so is there a sort of
21:58growing hip scene in monaco now not really no like people here when they see you've got tattoos and
22:03stuff it's like really judgy it's just very wealthy people in such a small area that it's just narrow-minded
22:09so as soon as you see difference in people you just get judged really quickly why do you stay here then
22:15here yes well because all my family's here and and it's a beautiful city and also we don't pay taxes so
22:23that's a reason as well as its own tax system monaco also has its own legal system originally belgian lawyer
22:36pi is now able to practice at the monaco bar because she married a monegas husband over 10 years ago
22:42and has become a monegas citizen herself she now runs her own law firm
22:47one of the clients is louise the woman who runs
23:17the local auction house who recently came to her with the case that is pure monaco a dispute about
23:23the ownership of a 25 000 pounds crocodile skin hermes handbag it's a really well-known kelly's back
23:31so it's the kelly and so it's quite expensive so this back was presented at the auction and so it was
23:38put in the magazine and one morning a lady showed up at the office of the auction company and say oh you
23:45cannot sell this bag because it's mine and so they were amazed and they say oh okay if you say so
23:53please provide us some evidences and then we will withdraw the bag from the auction the lady who said
24:00that it was her bag uh come with pictures only and so we asked the expert there was one in france an
24:08expert in crocodile i didn't know about that and he said no there is no way that could be the same bag
24:13because you can see the difference in the mark and so at the end we all the experts said it's not the
24:18same one so um this bag was seized by the police in the meantime saying that we have to wait as a
24:25lawyer yeah have you often had handbag disputes before no that's the first one for me i had a dispute
24:32about aircrafts oh really yes but this one is probably the funniest one so do you also have a
24:37hermese bag worth 30 000 euros yourself no no no no no i don't no too that's a pity i love to
24:49pia has some news for her client louise there has been a complication in the case of the disputed
24:55crocodile skin handbag so at this stage i think we are pretty fine it's almost done yes normally we
25:03were supposed to to get the handbag this week but she filed an appeal and but i think it's going to
25:09be okay because the experts said that you know here the line and the scale here going up it couldn't
25:18be the same as this one is going down when you zoom in i think you can really see the difference
25:24yes yes it's a unique handbag exactly it's a unique handbag with unique scales and a unique
25:30fingerprint exactly what grounds does she have it's a mystery for me what she could claim now you know
25:37because uh obviously it's not hers so i don't have i cannot see any reason why they would keep the
25:45back you know uh at the court because obviously it's not hers okay good so i will let you know
25:51where we have to go together i didn't ask you before how does an english woman like you end up
25:56working in monica i married a monogasque actually yes um and we moved here 10 years ago have you
26:03become a monogasque citizen not yet what's the process please ask pia a little bit different in my case
26:12actually in what way um because my husband was born french and then he became monogasque
26:20ah so it's not automatic despite the fact we've been married for 10 years
26:25is pia giving you legal advice on this yes she is i would like to be monogasque i'd be
26:33feel very honored to be given the monogasque password why do you say that because i feel part of the
26:40community i really do um but i wasn't ready maybe five years ago i still felt very english and i was
26:47always battling with my husband for various different points but now i feel that i belong
26:52here and i'll stay here and our life is here i'm not going to move back to england the case of the
26:58crocodile skin handbag continues and pia will have to wait a full three months before eventually
27:05retrieving it back from the courts at the casino it's time to return to the 1920s for the prohibition
27:16era party at the front the normal punters continue to arrive for general admission
27:22but for tonight's exclusive event the theme is of speakeasies and prohibition
27:28the ballroom and private gaming rooms are getting the finishing touches
27:32and in true prohibition style the general manager waits furtively at the side entrance for his high
27:39rolling guests this clientele is russian asia and sometime middle east they are looking for the history
27:47the soul of the building they are not playing in a cube in the desert somewhere so they know where they
27:55are and they want to to have this experience here finally time for the royal arrivals at the secret
28:07game soiree freshly but discreetly tattooed camille joins her uncle albert and aunt caroline
28:16the prince and his family's presence is one of the draws for the casino's top guests
28:22and since its foundation the princes of monaco have taken those eye rollers seriously even if
28:28pai's ancestors decree no monegas citizen including the princely family can actually gamble themselves
28:42to keep all the bejewelled visitors safe the police patrol the casino square
28:48suddenly they get a radio call that there has been an incident
28:57guillaume the night chief leader and his colleague priscilla
29:00are told that two or possibly three men are on the run after an alleged theft
29:04it seems the two men ran away from this tour without paying for a pizza
29:24the police system
29:43even in a small store like this there are video cameras everywhere
29:47back at base guillaume reviews the incident on the 900 cctv cameras that capture every corner in
30:44the two suspects have been arrested and are being held in the police cells and it turns out
30:51they're both brits where do you come from where exactly when did you back home tomorrow morning
31:00yes well now now you have to wait okay please i was scared so i ran away from why did you scare
31:14why because you tried to rob a part of pizza no no i've never ever had any trouble with the police
31:21in my whole life okay so now you wait okay yeah yeah in five minutes
31:27the shop doesn't want to press charges for the possible attempted theft so the police are
31:34letting it drop but there are still strict rules to be followed bon monsieur là est dans le sein
32:27et ben lui il s'échape voilà il seems like the two brits have had a lucky escape là et là c'est
32:43it's said that you should never buy a property with a sea view in monaco because you will lose
32:55it but monaco's prison is an exception the prison's governor enjoys one of the best views in the
33:02principality from this we know you have the view on the the front via arbor the the fortress a part
33:11of the fortress you know you have a magnificent view the last beach in monaco is here the last
33:19natural beach is under my office the last one the natural beach in monaco what happens to all the
33:27the houses the other because the building we build the you could argue we'll have a bunch of you
33:34we've done your neighbor the prince no lunch for the prisoners is being served and in true monaco style
34:21is currently only our food for the prisoners only the five women cells have a view but they have
34:29to stand on the bed to see it today it's not so you have to see it's it's amazing for one people here
34:48to see the this view because here in prison so it it's better these bars are defense against one
35:03challenge unique to monaco the increased chances of escape by helicopter ici c'est la courte promenade
35:27procédure we are a lot of person from east of europe a lot of civilian people we have romanian
35:34hungarian why would any criminal come and do their criminal work in monaco because there is a lot
35:42of money it's a big cake this week the cake is about to grow even bigger when monaco welcomes some
35:50of the richest people in the world for the monaco yacht show which will bring in a vast influx of very
35:56high spenders for anyone in the business of buying or selling luxury motor yachts this event is a
36:03very big deal there are not that many places in the mediterranean that combine everything you've
36:08got here you know you've got a huge port that can accommodate four billion euros worth of tonnage
36:13and of course you've got the best hotels in the world all over the hill here you've got some great
36:17restaurants nice airport is a helicopter ride away down the coast i mean it's just got everything
36:22that our industry wants these yachts worth millions and sometimes hundreds of millions of pounds have
36:29become the symbol of 21st century wealth these very large luxury yachts are a bit like our generation's
36:37expression of people's wealth and achievement back in the 18th century people built enormous stately
36:42homes nowadays the planners won't let you do that so if you you have that kind of wealth and you want to
36:47build something spectacular then you know a large private yacht is yeah yeah it's it's not a difficult
36:54sell really a boat at the end of the day not at all not at all
37:06this annual yacht show will pack in over four billion euros worth of luxury yachts for sale
37:11we have a big one coming in here about six o'clock this evening 82.5 meters can you give me an idea
37:19how much it will cost me i think off the top of my head i think it's oh i don't know i think 120
37:25million euro and are there enough people who want to spend 120 million euros there are people yeah the
37:32top one percent of the ultra high net worth so that's the one percent that we're looking for the one
37:37percent of the one percent and everyone here is primed to do whatever it takes to accommodate the
37:43every whim of their special yacht show guests outside the hotel de paris some of the valley parkers
37:50need to go the extra mine i'm a chasseur the chasseur is a person who help everyone everyone
37:56everyone everyone can need something to buy or to care so chasseur you mean actually go out and buy
38:03things yes every day every day yesterday a guest asked me could you buy for me cigarettes in italy
38:11wow no but please so i call a colleague who live in italy when you come to work please buy cigarettes
38:19for the guest and well we try to to give the smile to our guests
38:24one day a guest eats some sushi and this guest loves the sushi from the shop and they told me
38:32okay i want my wife my wife it's this sushi tonight in moscow we buy the sushi we want the private jet
38:40and we send the sushi in moscow directly really yeah many who come to the yacht show each year do so to
38:48keep up with the billionaire joneses but some come just to keep an eye on the latest trends and possibly
38:55to be tempted i come to the yacht show each year yeah and is the monaco yacht show big one it's the best
39:02one of the year here in the world yeah without a doubt and are you in the market for potentially buying
39:08one oh i'm always interested i have my own yacht 70 odd meters 240 foot what possibly a bigger and better
39:23one um maybe maybe
39:28have you looked at the port have you seen the yacht where sometimes you take a break five minutes
39:36by walk you take a look and you see the most beautiful uh boats on the world in the world
39:46and in this their busiest week of the year the harbor personnel are starting to feel the pressure
39:58and you can see we have a 100 uh boats who must come in the four days
40:15i have many boats who come earlier or later and we can't keep inside another boat with nothing social
40:22it's not possible
40:28so what's going on i have a very strong wing and the sailing boat has some problem to get in position
40:43has it changed yes because at the beginning they have only uh two two key only the kennedy key
40:51and the chicken the old chicken and after every year it's bigger and bigger
40:56and now they have all the parts so in this time a boat was a 45 50 meters was a very big boat and now
41:06it's a normal bottom the big boats are 80 85 to 100 meters just as the hotel valley parkers get used to
41:16ferraris and rolls royces their yachting equivalents don't seem remotely faced by their hundred million pound
41:23clients it's easy it's easy if the captain is not too crazy it's easy you sometimes have captains not
41:34yeah yeah the russian the russian people incredible bim bam boom catastrophe that's life you follow me i show
41:45your bus
41:46your bus
41:49ventura some yacht is the first time i see and outside there is the mega yacht they can't enter in the
41:59harbor wow we need to a little bit move the boat because he's uh close to the birth
42:08and uh ventura is coming uh it's perfect the yacht show describes itself as a pinnacle of luxury and
42:19sure enough the world's richest and most demanding customers have begun to arrive
42:26but it's all in a day's work for the yacht show's director gael who is responsible for making sure all
42:31run smoothly it's too uh too light yeah oh my gosh it's me it's me it's too uh too light you have to
42:42to find a way to fix it i'm sorry
42:50find missing over here excuse me the show is open now so make sure that you impact everything okay thank
42:59you it's my 21st monaco yacht show there's still some little details to finalize we are exhausted but
43:09it's not the end of the work until nothing left on these docks for those thinking of joining this
43:16exclusive club this 47 meter yacht might be just the one to get them started the sales team is being
43:24shown around so they are ready for clients what you see here is a on spec project built by us the moment
43:32still available for sale but as you know people are fighting outside to buy the boat most buyers
43:38pre-order a new yacht to be built to their own specifications but this company hope that an
43:43impatient millionaire just can't wait the three years it takes to build a yacht and will be prepared
43:49to jump in its owner's office we have one of the coolest feature of the boat that is just here
43:57behind you which unfortunately we cannot open because of the boat next to us that balcony right here
44:06opens up and gives you that very nice feel of literally living on water this turkish company
44:11dream of being at the top end of the market where a yacht can cost hundreds of millions
44:16the asking price is 24 and a half million of course million euros this is what is publicly shared
44:27of course there is room for negotiation are you feeling optimistic about selling very very optimistic
44:32why because they told me that they are fighting already outside to buy to purchase the boat and they
44:40did eventually sell the boat at an undisclosed price yacht show week is a busy time not only for people
44:48selling yachts but also the monaco companies who help the world's wealthy with the running of their
44:54complex affairs like bespoke services who are today throwing a breakfast reception for clients
45:01when new clients come into our office the first thing they do is just walk onto the balcony
45:06and they're just mesmerized by it and say how lucky we are because we have it every day yeah
45:12karine caroline and their soon to arrive partner judith are all lawyers by training
45:17and between them speak half a dozen languages they can connect you to any service you need
45:24and help you negotiate all monaco's many rules and red tape we do a variety of things a lot of the time
45:31it starts with people who are coming to be resident here so we can help them through the process of
45:36getting their residence card and then it can move on to other things maybe helping them find apartments
45:41helping the children get into school and also you know no one is really from here originally of course
45:47there's like what 8 000 monagas people but the rest were all like expats or were all uh imports
45:53we'll work with the lawyers the accountants yeah that will all be in french but with our clients it's
45:58actually always in english and that's why they come to us because they prefer to speak in their
46:02own language and then let us do different and they like our view yeah we didn't say you were late
46:11this is the year with the most yachts i would see i think so too and they get bigger too yeah i mean
46:16look at that's all more than 100 meters and the number of new bills that are just getting bigger and
46:20bigger and bigger and bigger i mean we've had a five in the last 24 hours oh you've heard about yeah five
46:26new bills that are all opposed to 150 meters yeah what do you mean that have been finally ordered
46:31that all that are being ordered yeah that and that will be signed in the coming weeks so you know
46:37about these things because you're in the business of well only because of my clients not because exactly
46:42yeah so you need a structure for that as well you don't buy a hundred meter yacht in your own name
46:47so yeah from a liability perspective it's really important with boats or planes yeah or villas
46:53yeah owning a boat isn't like owning a car to start with you have to employ a crew and that can
47:00get complicated so bespoke services help clients to form a separate company which then owns the boat
47:07making sure the client is not personally responsible if something goes horribly wrong i think i ran can
47:13film festival this year there was one crew member that died because the boats collided and so i mean that
47:19that sort of thing for an owner is it's obviously really important that you have your your structures
47:23and your players while bespoke services helps clients with legal and financial issues
47:32creme the club for foreign residents is its social life equivalent helping new or potential
47:39residents to adjust to the life of the one percent and what do you do i've got props back home
47:46louisette who founded the club is as well connected as it's possible to be so knows everything about
47:53monaco society i was born in monaco but when you are born in monaco you keep your nationality you know
47:59your parents my parents were italian i was princess gracie's private assistant for 19 years
48:06and um so they they gave me the nation when the gas nationality which i'm very happy and proud to have
48:12tonight not much art sale is necessary monaco seems to be selling itself you know in italy what you earn
48:2150 maybe more you have to give to the government here no i can't lie i mean i think the um fiscal
48:28advantages are obviously uh kind of a big attraction um and so is the the education system here in monaco
48:33it's uh it's uh it's very good i think the opportunities are greater than back home back home
48:40is quite slow here things are more prosperous and growing it's like you can do business but in in a nice
48:47place really nice and there are some other advantages like taxes as well of course
48:54of course it's a very big why i feel like in the movie really i wake up in the morning and i
49:06every day i walk around the city i feel that i am in a movie and i like the feeling
49:12bright-eyed hope fools can't see any downsides to life in monaco a safe and luxurious haven at a
49:19time of trouble the initial kind of reaction from everyone is like oh monaco oh what are you doing
49:23there um i think since brexit you know those voices have become a lot quieter and people are okay well
49:30actually that's not a bad idea kind of moving out of the country um i don't know who will have the last
49:34laugh but um so far so good very happy oh well at the club for foreign residence summer party you can
49:46meet people who've been here for many years and have a bit more perspective on life in monaco like one
49:52of the 3 000 brits who live here my daughter described it as luxury lego land and i think that's
49:58probably about right actually i've lived all over the world and it took me i think a good three years
50:04to get used to monaco which is the longest ever we were lucky enough to buy an apartment 20 years ago
50:10when it was not so expensive he worked for a bank and the mortgage was half the price of the rental so
50:16it was a no-brainer hello tom how are you dina chris hi usually the man buys a boat rushes up and down
50:23the coast uh the wife gets fed up after a year and goes back to hazelmere or wherever she was because
50:28she can't stand it um and the guys love it here there's a lot of ukrainians and russians you know
50:35particular restaurants where the girls are this high and the guys at this height um it just i don't
50:42go to them because i happen not to like i just think they're a bit over the top obviously a lot of
50:47very wealthy people try and wind up in monaco some of them get their residence cards some of them
50:53don't it's a sunny place for shady people yeah there probably are some shady people and it is sunny
51:09monaco is surrounded on three sides by france so they have a very special relationship but once
51:15you cross the border from the republic of liberty egalite and fraternity monaco has its own laws and
51:22the police have the power to check out anyone anytime bonsoir messieurs vous habitez sur monaco
52:32le message très bonne mémoire on va se revoir it's very clear that when in monaco monaco rules apply
52:42but next day at the palace the importance of monaco's relationship with france is on display
52:48today's the french ambassador so it's extremely important that we keep these relations very
52:54positive and very friendly level that they are the brand new french ambassador is coming to be
53:00formally introduced to the prince and the carabiniers are in their best uniforms
53:05although trained to kill the carabiniers also work as trumpeters and try not to strike a bum note
53:16oh you can see if he's arriving yeah so the crowds are not just for the french ambassador is
53:24for further changing of the guard okay ah we don't usually have these kind of crowds
53:30today we are serving the ambassador a few fruit juices waters and a little champagne that will be
53:45served cold while time in the morning will start serving champagne we'll start serving champagne at 11
53:53it's the closest we can find to the aperitif time around here
53:58over the years monaco's relations with france haven't always been easy but prince albert
54:12is determined to keep france and its new ambassador on side lacking natural resources monaco simply
54:23could not survive without good relations with its all-important neighbor prince albert knows that
54:29if he gets this relationship wrong france could at worst threaten to cut them off
54:34president macron's man is treated like no other he has been invited to a lunch with the prince and all
54:43his senior officials but that of course will remain behind closed doors
54:52it's the last day of the yacht show and deals worth billions of euros are being concluded
54:58this is what the yacht show is all about making contacts and selling boats we're finalizing a deal
55:03upstairs at the moment really yes would you like me to uh sure
55:12eeson is a major dutch yacht builder and they will take three years to deliver this boat clinching
55:18the sale of this one yacht makes it all worthwhile for their sales director mark cavendish dennis has
55:25just come to review the general arrangement drawing and the specification and the final contract
55:32okay well if you're happy with that i think that's fine okay are you the owner i know no i'm an
55:36owner he wishes represents still though ah this is a 57 meter full custom aluminium motor yacht
55:44she'll be delivered in 2023 presumably the price has been agreed yes the price has been agreed
55:50i think that it would be uh i wouldn't be able to reveal that information that would be confidential
56:00for the owner and and the shipyard to be honest but mark can celebrate their deal by showing one they
56:06sold some years ago now on the healthy second-hand market to give some idea of the luxury specifications
56:14the mysterious owner has just purchased that's very nice to have this open in the evening yeah
56:20owner's cabin up here i remember revolving bed great view outside
56:26oh cheers cheers well done cheers yeah congratulations congratulations thank you
56:37there is an astonishing amount of money out there across the arbor there is another deal to be struck
56:44marco and his mother with a keen eye for detail are pondering the merits of a new purchase can i just ask
56:50are you interested in potentially buying yeah we live here in monaco and uh yeah yeah we're actively
56:55looking for her to buy a boat she likes it yeah because she is really tough she's very difficult
57:03and picky because we have seen a lot with jelena also and you know there is everything on the market
57:10so it's quite difficult also so if your mama approves that's a good start mama knows best you know plus
57:17i'm italian so she's my everything for what we have seen so far it's really pretty also what
57:24she um what she always uh esteems is the you know the state of the yacht then you make a decision
57:32hopefully because we don't visit things that of course are i mean we don't visit things that cost 100
57:39really why not i need a russian accent after because you know i don't have enough money
57:47you know what they say in monaco if you want a perfect sea view buy a boat so it's the only way
57:55to have an uncompressed uh sea view plus we love boats we have a chartered before smaller one and so i
58:02think it's just about the time to get to buy yeah the real thing well good luck i hope you enjoy fingers
58:08are yeah across big time next time the extraordinary prize of a sea view in europe's wealthiest state
58:17bling bling bling bling bling bling bling bling it's not cheap i think it's a bit of a millionaire's
58:22playground it's on the market for 19 million the space is very limited so the buildings are more and
58:31more expensive this space is actually 24 square meters it's so small that i have to kind of you know
58:39walk hunched but it works that's the price of living in monaco it is
