Choir member Mike Aaronson is encouraging everyone who loves great singing and music to come to the Waverley Singers’ platinum jubilee opera gala concert at the Farnham Maltings on October 26 at 6pm.
It will be conducted by Richard Pearce and will feature soprano Nina Bennet, tenor Robin Bailey and the choir’s regular accompanist Jakob Rothoff on piano.
The show will recall many elements of the choir’s history as it is just over 70 years since the Waverley Singers’ first concert under that name, a fundraiser for St Andrew’s Church in Church House on September 24, 1955.
The programme will include Verdi’s Triumphal Scene from Aida and his Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, the Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s Prince Igor, Purcell’s Dido’s Lament and Final Chorus from Dido and Aeneas, Puccini’s Che Gelida Manina from La Bohème, Verdi’s Mercé Dilette Amiche from the Sicilian Vespers and Chaminade’s Automne. A retiring collection will be held for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care.

00:00Hi I'm talking to Mike Aronson from the Waverley Singers and he's going to tell
00:05us about their upcoming 70th anniversary concert and something about the history
00:09of the group. Over to you Mike. Thanks very much Paul. Well yeah we're looking
00:14forward to our concert in the Farnham Waltings on Sunday the 26th October at
00:196 p.m. It's not exactly 70 years since we gave our first concert in Farnham but
00:26it's only about a month out so it's been a big year for us 70 years of singing in
00:32different venues around Farnham and this concert is an opera gala so lots of
00:39favorite songs and choruses from opera and we've done a couple of them before
00:45actually in the Waltings so we're continuing a tradition there and going a
00:50bit further back we we started I think not long after the Maltings became a
00:56charity and sort of had raised this huge ambition to become a sort of nice
01:01community and concert venue and just before our own 25th anniversary we gave
01:07a huge concert in the Waltings to raise funds for them so we go back a long way
01:12together and for this concert we've got a couple of really great soloists soprano
01:19Nina Bennett tenor Robin Bailey we've got our usual magic fingers Jakob Rothoff
01:27on the accompanying us on the piano and we're conducted by our regular
01:32conductor Richard Pearce so it's going to be a great occasion there'll be a
01:36retiring collection at the end for Phyllis Tuckwell hospice care so we're
01:41really hoping that we're going to have a good turnout lots of people come along
01:44enjoy a fabulous evening of music and contribute to two good causes Waverley
01:49singers and Phyllis Tuckwell as well
