Not every girl says to her mum “I want to be an opera singer” - but that was the dream of Beth Stirling.
Scottish soprano Beth will join the Waverley Singers in Crowning Glory at St Lawrence Church in Alton on June 27 at 7pm.
Currently doing a master of performance degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Beth said: “I have another year to go and then after that I will be planning on applying for young artist programmes to try to get a career in opera.”
Starring with her are fellow soloists Niamh Kearney (mezzo-soprano), Max Robbins (tenor) and William Jowett (bass). Philip Scriven will play the organ.
The concert is in aid of Treloar’s. For tickets, priced £17 (under-18s/students £5), visit www.waverleysingers.com

00:01Hi, I'm talking to Mike Aronson from the Waverley Singers, and he's going to tell us all about the concert
00:06at St Lawrence Church on the 27th of June, which is called Crowning Glory.
00:12Yes, hello. Well, thanks, Paul. I mean, this is going to be a terrific concert. We're all looking forward to
00:16it. It's always lovely to sing in summer, and St Lawrence Church in Alton is such a fantastic place to
00:21sing.
00:22But we call this one Crowning Glory because pretty well all the music is associated with coronations of one kind
00:28or another.
00:29So we've got a piece by Handel from the coronation of King George II, a piece by Boyce from the
00:36coronation of King George III.
00:40Phil Scriven on the organ is going to play Walton's Crown Imperial, which is more contemporary.
00:45And we're also singing a piece by Roxana Pnufnik, which King Charles III commissioned for his own coronation in 2023.
00:53But the main work in the concert is Mozart's so-called Coronation Mass, which wasn't actually written for a particular
01:01coronation,
01:02but was performed at the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor towards the end of the 18th century.
01:09And the best thing about this concert is we've got four fantastic young vocal soloists from the Guildhall School of
01:16Music and Drama.
01:18They're really inspiring to talk to.
01:22We've done a podcast with two of them on our website and above all to hear singing.
01:29I mean, these young people, the amount of dedication, the amount of energy and skill they put into their craft,
01:35it's really quite inspiring.
01:36So I strongly recommend anyone who wants to have a real musical treat, come along to St. Lawrence Church in
01:43Alton on Saturday, the 27th of June at 7pm to listen to the Waverley Singers and our young soloists perform
01:51Crowning Glory.
