00:00I've been working at St. Hyde School for the past year, promoting active travel, so everything from walking, wheeling, cycling, scooting, skating, in and out of school.
00:12Our main objective really is to cut down congestion around the school gate to make it more accessible for children to walk and wheel and cycle.
00:21We did a survey around the school and we noticed that not very many of the children were cycling into school.
00:26So when we dug a little bit deeper, we found out because there was nowhere for them to securely put their bikes and also nowhere for the bikes to be sheltered either.
00:34So the Sustrans travel group that we set up with the children, they then looked into how we could get ourselves a bike shed.
00:41And then we discovered that the town council were promoting cycling around St. Hyde's.
00:47So we contacted the town council and they were very keen to be part of it, which was brilliant.
00:51We used to have around about maybe five or six bikes. Even on a regular basis, we averaged around about maybe 15, 20 bikes a day.
01:02We had to write a letter to the council to get them to come in and we wanted them to see if they would lend us some money so that we could buy a bike shed.
01:13It's better for the environment, less cars and it's less global warming. And it's also very fun.
01:20Sometimes I ride with my mum and sister, but sometimes I ride by myself.
01:25It's really good for exercise and I'm not polluting the planet into going in a car every day.
01:32It's good. It's good exercise and it helps me, because I play rugby, it helps me exercise.
01:42That's good. That's right now. That's good.
01:46One of the things we want to do within the town is promote cycling and the best way to promote cycling is to start at school and get the kids cycling to school.
01:56Part of the transport town deal, transport project, we paid for the shed. They phoned us up, said they needed somewhere to leave bikes, because obviously, you know, we get a fair bit of rain around here and it's not great leaving your bikes outside all day in the rain.
02:12It's about getting kids developing healthy lifestyles, getting in the habit of walking or cycling to school, not always jumping in the car.
02:20I don't know if it's really a bad weather, a lot of people expect to drive to school or get on the bus, but these kind of things, if you start children young, they will see cycling as being the norm, as the best way to get around.
02:31I think it's really good. Loads more people are using their bikes and I think it's a lot more space for people to use.
