Motorhead Garage Season 13 Episode 41
Transcript
00:00Power Service, and you're the expert. Tell us what can go wrong with a diesel over time.
00:04Well, over time, when you're running different varieties of fuel through the engines of diesel,
00:09places you're getting the fuel, we're seeing carbon buildup on injectors. We're seeing deposits,
00:14foreign deposits getting on the injectors. So customers are seeing rough idle, you know,
00:19lack performance, increased emissions. And so we've come up with this diesel injector and DPF
00:25flush in order to address those concerns. Power Service has been known for years and years for
00:30your anti-gel and other diesel products. This is a new product. This is your first new product in 20
00:35years. So why has it been 20 years since you've developed something new? And how'd you find the
00:40need for this? Well, we don't traditionally come out just with products for the sake of coming out
00:45with products. We want to come out with a product that really fits a customer's needs. With the
00:50evolution of diesel engines, with the diesel fuel that's changed into ultra-low sulfur diesel, the
00:54bio-blended fuels, the alternative fuels are out there, there was an opportunity for this
00:59product to come out and address some of the new concerns or newer concerns of the
01:04diesel engines. You know, injector balance, making sure that all six injectors in the
01:09engine or however many injectors that particular engine has are injecting the
01:14proper amounts of fuel through the combustion chamber. So you have a harmony of
01:17those injection events happening. And so your engine can run to the peak
01:21performance that it was designed to do. Your truck does a regen. Folks may or may
01:25not know that. I think folks that have diesels will probably know. It does a
01:29regen every so often and that cleans that filter among other things. How does
01:33the gold standard here, how does that change the efficiency when it comes to
01:36regens? What we look at with the diesel injector DPF flush product is how does it
01:41increase? And what we've seen up to a 50% increase in the mileage between regions.
01:46You brought a couple of examples, specific examples of trucks that you guys have
01:50seen. How much efficiency are we talking just in the first in the first tank full,
01:54the first fill? So in the testing that we've been doing over the last year and a
01:58half, we've tested class 7, 8 trucks. We've tested 1500 GMC trucks with the 3
02:05liter. We've tested 2500, you know, three quarter ton trucks and we've seen up to
02:1150%, you know, increase in distance between the regions and, you know, average across
02:16the board on those. You know, the class 7 and 8 truck, we saw, I think it was a 38%
02:20increase in, you know, distance between regions. You know, in the 1500, it was just
02:24over 50%. Break it down for me. If I'm going longer between regions, how's that
02:29helping me? Well, you know, it's easier on the systems. You know, these regen systems,
02:34when they go through the regen, it's hot, it's burning out the soot, but it's also
02:39shortening the life of the DPF filters. And so in a serviceable time, it's going to save
02:44you money and save you time and service costs in replacing DPF filters, going into
02:50a shop to get a clean up on a DPF filter. A lot of the class 7 and 8 trucks, they're
02:55removing the DPF filter, taking it to shop, having it professionally clean and put it
03:00back on a truck. That's downtime, that's inefficiency in their fleet. So in this
03:04product with diesel injector and DPF flush, we can lessen that burden on those
03:09trucking fleets. The average consumer in a lighter duty truck, they don't, like I said,
03:14they don't know when it's regening, but when it is, it's burning out that ceramics,
03:19it's hurting the internals of that DPF filter, the more frequent it does. So
03:22they're going to eliminate that repair. And what am I going to notice when it
03:26comes to fuel economy? We've seen crazy fuel economy results, but we're looking at,
03:31you know, hey, an average of increase of up to 10% increase in fuel economy. We've
03:36measured that from the, like I said, the 1500 to the 2500 to the class 7, 8 truck,
03:40each showed a, you know, a wide range of increase in fuel economy, but it all stems
03:45from cleaning the injection system, reducing the amount of regens that burns a lot of fuel
03:51when it's going through a regen cycle. And so all that together and, you know, based on a clean
03:56injector is you're seeing massive improvements in fuel economy.
03:59How often do I need to use this?
04:01We recommend once a month as a maintenance item, just every month, dump a bottle of this product
04:08into the tank and, you know, let it go to work. And the beauty about this product is the rapid
04:13response that you're going to see of it. It's one tank. It's dump it straight into the fuel tank
04:18and let it go to work in your injection system.
04:20You're also famous for your diesel clean at power service. When do I use that?
04:24Diesel clean is designed as a detergent, a acetane improver, and a lubricator to be used at every fill-up.
04:31And then this is a deep clean into your injection system on a monthly or as needed basis.
04:37Essentially, the diesel clean is like brushing your teeth every single day.
04:41And the diesel flush is like when you go to the dentist every six months to get the deep clean.
04:44You can find both of those products at powerservice.com and a whole lot more.
04:49We've got a whole lot more Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products right after this.
04:53So please keep it right here.
04:55Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products brought to you by Deadcent.
05:01Start treating your nose to better days.
05:04Amsoil, the first in synthetics.
05:08And by Custom Auto Sound, audio for the great classics, customs, and street rods.
05:13This ball joint, well, it's connected to the spindle.
05:24Well, think about this.
05:25Your spindle assembly is holding on your brakes, your rotor, and your whole wheel assembly.
05:30If this goes bad, shoom, the wheel's going right by you off your vehicle.
05:34Welcome to this AMS Oil Tech Tip.
05:36Now, you don't believe me?
05:37You can take a look at our street rod right here.
05:39You actually see the I-beam suspension come up.
05:42It's connected right here to this ball joint, and the ball joint's the only thing holding
05:45the spindle on.
05:46So it better be in good shape, and you better keep it maintained and maintained properly.
05:50You can see it right here on a modern vehicle.
05:53It's actually holding the whole upper control arm on and the lower control arm.
05:57You may have two ball joints, one single ball joint, but it has to be maintained.
06:01It has to be greased.
06:02It has to be lubricated.
06:03They come in all shapes and sizes.
06:05Press in, drilled in, slotted, and rotored.
06:08All kinds of ways to rivet to put these things in the vehicle.
06:11Now, what do you want to do to check them?
06:13Well, it depends on the location.
06:14Which one is the follower and which one is the load carrying ball joint.
06:17Now, you see the one on the left there?
06:19The spring's located in the middle of the two control arms.
06:22Well, then the load carrying ball joint's on the bottom.
06:24So you want to jack up on the actual lower control arm.
06:26What you're doing, you're taking the tension off of it.
06:29Now, the other one there, the spring's up on the top.
06:31That makes the top the load carrying ball joint.
06:33So jack up on the frame.
06:35And then you just wiggle the wheel back and forth.
06:37Better yet, I did it right here for you.
06:39I got it suspended there on the lower control arm.
06:42Actually, look at that dial indicator.
06:43We're prying up and down on that thing.
06:46Man, then that thing's going about a hundred thousandths.
06:50I mean, a little grease gun, a little maintenance.
06:53That doesn't have to happen, does it?
06:54No, you know, to be honest with you, that's something that always gets me.
06:58Because if you have a greasable ball joint
07:00and you actually maintain it and put grease in it, they don't wear out.
07:04You know, you see them in there for 20 years.
07:06As long as they've been maintained and you keep the grease in between those mating surfaces,
07:11they don't wear out.
07:12Now, what makes a grease a good grease like Amsoil?
07:14Well, here's the thing.
07:15People don't understand about grease.
07:17The greasy part, that's called thickener.
07:20That's really there to hold the oil in place.
07:23The part of the grease that's actually doing the work is still oil.
07:26So it goes back to many of yours and my previous conversations in the fact that
07:31you need to start with a good base oil and then you need to put additives in it to get it to do
07:34what you want.
07:35And in the case of a grease, you use a good heavy base oil.
07:38Make sure you've got some extreme pressure additives in there, all of which need to be high quality.
07:42And a good thickener that's going to hold that grease in place under all kinds of different
07:47temperatures.
07:49And you're good to go.
07:50Yeah, absolutely good to go.
07:51And you know, a lack of maintenance on your vehicle's chassis may just cause your car to be unstable.
07:55But lack of maintenance on your engine and transmission?
07:58Well, that's catastrophic.
07:59Make maintenance easy.
08:01Just go to Amsoil.com.
08:11My name is Chris Bentley and this is my 1950 Ford F1.
08:18This started out as a 1950.
08:23I've basically redone everything.
08:24I've owned it for three years.
08:26We've swapped the motor.
08:28It's backed with an AOD transmission, four nine inch rear end, full AccuAir air ride suspension,
08:34brand new interior.
08:35I upgraded to the Holley digital dash.
08:38I found the truck in Tennessee.
08:39It belonged to a farmer who owned a lot of collision shops.
08:42He passed away, unfortunately.
08:44So the family was auctioning off some of his vehicles.
08:46I was able to get a hold of this one.
08:48I still stay in contact with the family.
08:49I send them pictures of the upgrades.
08:51If I'm ever back that way, they always invite me to stop by and let them check it out.
08:55I cherish it and I know they're glad that somebody like me got a hold of it.
08:59I go to car shows almost every weekend.
09:07A lot of times I'm one of the younger ones there.
09:09It's nice to see that the younger generation is still restoring these older cars.
09:13I've had some help with some pain, things like that, that I'm not the best at.
09:16Basically everything I've done, if I didn't do the work myself, it was my vision.
09:20This is definitely a big head turner.
09:22All ages, all groups.
09:24I think it's actually the biggest with the older ladies.
09:26They all seem to love it.
09:28The air ride was definitely what set it to the next level.
09:30The stance changed everything, made it a whole new truck.
09:34Not to mention it just rides like a Cadillac.
09:36What do you have on this truck that's from Steel Rubber?
09:38My door seals.
09:40They've definitely made the road noise a lot quieter, sealed out all the water.
09:44So I'm real happy with those.
09:46I know that I can contact them if I need any other seals.
09:49If they don't have them, they'll custom make them for me.
09:50I really do appreciate that.
09:54You're watching Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products.
09:58Welcome back to Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products.
10:04All right.
10:05So you've seen Mouse Blocker before in Motorhead Garage and you're thinking,
10:07well, I don't need that because I have a cat.
10:10Well, cats are great against mice most of the time because cats take naps.
10:14They get distracted and they're not on duty 24 hours a day.
10:18Mouse Blocker, on the other hand, never sleeps.
10:20It's a proven electronic deterrent and it sends rodents packing before they chew
10:24through thousands of dollars of wiring inside your car.
10:27Unlike a cat, Mouse Blocker won't scratch your paint, won't leave fur on your seats,
10:31and it won't wander off when you need it most.
10:33And we know cats do that all the time.
10:35Mouse Blocker is reliable and effective and it's built specifically to guard your car,
10:39truck, RV, or stored vehicle from costly damage.
10:42Do not gamble with your ride.
10:44Skip the litter box and go with a solution that works 24-7.
10:48You can protect your vehicle with Mouse Blocker. Just go to mouseblocker.com.
10:53Now, if you see the legendary S&S diesel logo on the side of a vehicle,
10:57you know you're in for an education.
10:59Today, we're talking about the 6.7 liter Power Stroke engine that's under the hood of these Fords.
11:03Now, these things are stalwarts. They run forever and ever.
11:06But, Luke, there is an Achilles heel with these engines. What is that?
11:10The high-pressure fuel pump is really the main Achilles heel.
11:12Like you said, they're a great truck.
11:13Lots of power and lots of reliability, realistically.
11:18But, they've earned a reputation for having early life failures and
11:21reliability problems with the high-pressure fuel pump that comes in them from the factory.
11:25How much pressure is running through those pumps?
11:272,000 bar to 2,500 bar.
11:29So, you're talking over 30,000 PSI in a lot of these cases.
11:33So, pressures that most of the world can't hardly fathom that kind of pressure, right?
11:37But, that's what the modern common rail diesel fuel systems live under all the time.
11:41So, it is a lot of stress.
11:42It's a lot of pressure with the factory pump if everything isn't just right.
11:46They're having failures, catastrophic engine problems sometimes, and lots of expensive downtime.
11:51Luke, last time we were here, we were talking about the disaster prevention kit
11:56that SNS Diesel's been making for years.
11:58How does that work and why do folks want to use that?
12:00Yeah, so that product we've had for years, like you said, it's kind of cheap insurance.
12:04It leaves the factory pump in place, but it changes the flow path within the pump.
12:08So, when the pump fails, it protects the injectors and the rest of the system.
12:13There's a return side filter because when these pumps do fail, they send metal shrapnel
12:17throughout the rest of the system.
12:18So, about $10,000 repair.
12:20Yeah, at least.
12:21It's painful, and the disaster prevention kit is kind of cheap insurance.
12:25So, you still have the risk of downtime of the pump, but at least the rest of the components are saved.
12:30So, let's take a look and see how that works here.
12:32You have a few pumps with you here.
12:34We're going to talk about these two.
12:35This is the stock pump that would come here on the Power Stroke engine.
12:38So, show us what we're looking at, how that works, and how that all functions,
12:41and we'll get an idea of why it fails.
12:43Yep.
12:43So, this is the factory CP4 pump.
12:45That's in 2011 to current model year.
12:48Any 67 Ford Power Stroke is running that.
12:51So, it is a two-cylinder pump in a V, like this pattern, but it is a metal roller,
12:57which, like this basically, metal roller riding on a cam, and it's high-speed metal-to-metal contact.
13:08Every rotation, it's going up and down twice every rev, and so what happens, unfortunately,
13:14is that roller that rides here can turn 90 degrees like that in a lot of model years,
13:21and then all it's doing is stripping metal out of the cam.
13:24And that's an actual victim right there.
13:26That actually came out of your truck.
13:27You tried to fail on purpose, but that's what will happen.
13:29Yep.
13:30This is what happens often in these trucks is that turns, and it digs a groove like that.
13:34All the metal that's now missing from here is everywhere else in the system.
13:38What also happens on these two is that roller in general, if you get just a little piece of
13:42debris or anything stuck in here, then it just seizes, and then it just starts grinding.
13:47And it's all over.
13:48Sometimes, actually, these pumps will seize so hard it splits the pump in half,
13:51but it's a pretty painful failure and very expensive.
13:55And for guys that rely on their trucks every day, the downtime is as expensive as the actual
14:01parts cost sometimes.
14:02And I can see where fleets would really love something for some solution to this.
14:05Yep.
14:06And speaking of that solution now, instead of the disaster prevention kit, you guys thought,
14:09well, how do we prevent this from happening in the first place?
14:12Yep.
14:12So you came up with your new fuel pump here.
14:14Yeah.
14:15And this is how that works.
14:16And let's see the design difference here and why this works so well.
14:18So a completely different bottom end architecture.
14:20It's still a two cylinder pump, but it's a two cylinder opposed like that.
14:24And instead of a roller riding straight on the cam, it is a eccentric off,
14:30basically offset cam with a roller on it.
14:32That roller is also lubricated with pressurized fuel up underneath of here.
14:36So this is riding on a film of fuel, just like a crankshaft in an engine with oil.
14:41And so very little metal to metal parts, much stronger bottom end.
14:46And it's just less moving parts, less to fail.
14:52That just makes a lot of sense.
14:54A lot smoother operation and just really much more robust setup.
14:58It's hard to hurt these.
15:00These are very sensitive design.
15:02And why take the chance?
15:03Yep.
15:03So we co-developed this product with Stanadyne, which is a well-known fuel manufacturer as well.
15:08This is actually a proven architecture used on medium duty, heavy duty engines,
15:12other parts of the world.
15:13We took this, our engineering teams and theirs worked to adapt this into the Ford platform.
15:18And what years does this cover?
15:192011 to current.
15:21One part number we designed to cover all model years, which was quite a challenge,
15:25but it makes it nice for customers and dealers to just have one part number
15:28and they can install that on any truck that rolls in the door.
15:31That explains the circuitous high pressure lines there.
15:33Yep.
15:33It'll fit everything.
15:34So this is what all comes in that kit.
15:36It's everything you need to drop in.
15:38You don't have to modify anything in the truck.
15:39It's no tuning required.
15:41We went through all the trouble to get the carb emissions compliance certification and all that
15:47as well.
15:47So it's 50 state compliant.
15:49And yeah, that's why these are designed this way is because the different model years had different
15:53changes with coolant lines and other fuel lines and every other thing.
15:57These, there's not a lot of real estate under these hoods anymore.
16:00So it's a challenge to make it work, but this threads the needle to make it work on all model years.
16:06This has been in production since June of 2023, you told me.
16:09So you've had about a year with this pump out on the market.
16:12How's it going so far?
16:12Great.
16:13We've had great uptake from the market.
16:16It's been a product that they've wanted for a long time.
16:18All the Ford guys knew that there was a problem,
16:19but it wasn't until this product came about that there was a real solution for it.
16:23So we had a lot of demand for it.
16:25And it's been a real success for us and for the market to have a final solution.
16:30You're always working on new stuff at SMS Diesel.
16:32Tell us where you're coming from on this trip.
16:34Yeah, always working on continual improvements as well.
16:37So me and my engineering team were down in South Carolina with Standardine's engineering teams as well.
16:42Where the, in Blythewood, South Carolina is where this pump is produced.
16:46So keeping it here in the US and we're working through continual improvements
16:50and things that we can do to make it the best product possible.
16:53Why take a chance?
16:54If you have one of these 6.7 liter power stroke engines,
16:57you are going to want the DCR pump from S&S Diesel Motorsports.
17:00And oh, by the way, if you have a competition truck,
17:03this has a potential for a lot more performance too.
17:05We'll be right back with more Motorhead Garage,
17:07presented by SteelRubberProducts.com, so don't go anywhere.
17:10Motorhead Garage, presented by SteelRubber products, brought to you by Spray Gunner,
17:18best products, ship fast. SudsLab, car care for all science-based detailing.
17:26And by Truck Claws, unstuck, unmatched, unbeatable.
17:33When we decided to bring some off-road folks into the studio, we decided just to go big.
17:38So we brought in Off-Road Armor. They're one of the biggest retailers in the entire world
17:42of off-road accessories. Kurt, you guys made quite a name for yourself so far,
17:47and you're making quite a name for yourself with these windows here, the upper door panels.
17:51Now, this is something only you guys do, and we've got it here on this Honda.
17:55Tell me about this design.
17:57Yeah, so these are the upper doors, upper aluminum doors for the Honda Pioneer 1000 and 1005.
18:02We are the only ones making anything like this in the world, so they're getting very popular.
18:07They are aluminum, like I mentioned, with scratch-resistant Lexan here.
18:10So when you're going through the trails and you hit a few trees,
18:12this is a very heavy-duty hinge for the Honda Pioneer.
18:16And it looks like that angle on the front kind of sheds the tree.
18:18Yeah, yeah, just glance right off of there.
18:21We developed that to do that as well as putting a really nice thick rubber seal around this door
18:26to help enclose it and keep the heat if you have a heater on the side-by-side.
18:30So I'll go ahead and open it up here.
18:32Sure. Take a look.
18:33And I love this because it's a two-fold thing. It's obviously for protection,
18:36and you don't really realize until you're out there off-roading how many branches come into
18:40the windows and want to whack you in the head.
18:41Absolutely.
18:42So this will protect you from that, and especially our folks watching on Rev TV Canada.
18:46Canadian folks love this. They put a heater in the vehicle,
18:48and this will keep your family warm when you're going through the tundra up there.
18:51Absolutely. So what you can do is, you know, in the middle of the day when it starts to get cool,
18:55you can really just take this upper door off very quick.
18:59Like a lot of things like this, you think of them as being super permanent. You know,
19:03you've got to make a decision. Do I want these windows forever or do I not? And this is the
19:07perfect situation. It starts to get warm during the day, and you just stop and you can...
19:10Absolutely.
19:11Four bolts.
19:12So four bolts. We're going to take those out. The hinge will hold it.
19:16All right.
19:16And we'll just go ahead and take that right off the hinge.
19:19That's it.
19:20There you go.
19:20You are cruising.
19:21One of the best deals about this is the Honda Pioneers have a door that is kind of
19:26funky to put your arm on. So one of the other things is when you don't have that upper door on,
19:32let me just show you here. I'm going to have a seat. You've got a really nice armrest now.
19:37Perfect.
19:37We've got a lot of people asking us, hey, can I just get the armrest?
19:40Yeah, nice.
19:40It's great. These are used for recreational and agricultural. So we get a lot of farmers
19:47that use them and riders that use these as well.
19:50Off-road armor is not just about side-by-sides. You guys also do things for all kinds of other
19:55off-road vehicles. Side-by-sides, ATVs, Jeeps, trucks, dirt bikes, anything off-road, we can take
20:03care of it. We've seen you in some video on some pretty high-profile rides out there. Who do you
20:07sponsor? So we've got Conor Martell, who's our main guy racing Nitro Rallycross right now, and he's
20:13one of the best rally car drivers in the world, actually. We're really excited to have him on the
20:19team. If you've got a Honda Pioneer 1000, you're going to love these upper doors. These windows are going to
20:23keep you warm. They're going to keep you safe on the trail. And if you're any kind of off-roader,
20:27you need to go check them out at OffRoadArmor.com.
20:30Thanks for tuning in to Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products. We will be back in seven
20:35days. In the meantime, just want to remind you, we're streaming everywhere you find TV and video.
20:39We'll see you in seven days. Until then, drive safely. So long.
