How does gender inequality affect people with disabilities?

00:00How does gender inequality affect people with disabilities?
00:07Around 87 million people in the EU have some form of disability.
00:12Women with intellectual disabilities face more barriers to work
00:16than both men with disabilities and women without disabilities in the continent as a whole.
00:21In the EU, only 48.1% of women with disabilities aged between 20 and 64 years old are employed.
00:28This figure is lower in comparison with men with disabilities in the same age group at 53.7%.
00:36Looking at the broader population, 61.6% of people with disabilities are in the labor market
00:42compared to 82.2% of people without disabilities.
00:46In Europe, women with disabilities are 2 to 5 times more likely to experience domestic violence
00:52than women without disabilities.
00:53This violence can take specific forms linked to their disabilities,
00:57such as being forced into isolation, abused in institutions or denied necessary medical care.
01:03In 2024, 12 countries still allowed some forms of forced sterilization
01:07in their legislation on women with disabilities, including 3 that also allowed it on minors.
01:13Older women are also more likely than men to need support
01:16and face greater barriers to living independently.
01:19Among older people with support needs, around 37% of women over 65 require long-term support
01:26compared to 23% of men.
