Senator Bridget McKenzie speaks about housing and outdated sewage treatment plants.
Transcript
00:00We've heard of towns here today that had a sewerage plant constructed in the 1940s and
00:06it's still expected to do the work of all the population growth.
00:10State governments used to be in charge of that.
00:12They're no longer funding that in the same way and indeed what we're also seeing is local
00:18governments being hit with the rate cap which is great for ratepayers but it means they
00:23have a declining source of revenue to really pay for this.
00:28So someone has to face up and say it's all good and well to say we'll build 1.2 million
00:35homes, we're going to pour 1.5 million extra people in, we're going to restrict the skilled
00:43migration list when it comes to trades and we're not going to help you get the sewerage
00:48power and connectivity on.
00:51That is a recipe for disaster when it comes to home ownership.
