00:00Any Halloween Wars team is a pumpkin carver
00:03whose skills are so good, they're scary.
00:08There's so much detail.
00:09Anything creepy, I'm all about it.
00:10I forget I'm looking at pumpkin.
00:12I'm so creeped out by this clown face.
00:16The most pumpkin I've ever seen on a display
00:19in all the seasons of Halloween.
00:23For the first stop on our hunt, we're
00:25headed to Spring, Texas.
00:30I'm Rebecca DeGroote, I'm a tattoo artist
00:33and a professional pumpkin carver.
00:34I went to school to be an art teacher.
00:37All right, what do you think?
00:41I have a very dry sense of humor.
00:43My favorite type of joke is a dad joke.
00:46How do you fix a broken pumpkin?
00:48With a pumpkin patch?
00:51I stopped teaching about a year ago,
00:53so I've been exclusively tattooing for the last year.
00:57Being able to design a proper tattoo
00:59and making it look good on a three-dimensional object,
01:01like the human skin, is something
01:04that really comes into play when you're designing
01:06a three-dimensional car on pumpkins.
01:09So the process kind of starts when you figure out
01:13what will work on the shape of the pumpkin.
01:15This one looks like it would work really well
01:17for a spider-type shape.
01:19It's got kind of a larger section here for the face,
01:23and we can have legs coming off in either direction.
01:27So I got into pumpkin carving because I wasn't allowed
01:31to celebrate Halloween when I was younger.
01:33We weren't allowed to dress up.
01:34We weren't allowed to go trick-or-treating.
01:36We weren't allowed to do any of those things.
01:38Once I was in college, I fully embraced the Halloween season
01:41and started carving pumpkins in my apartment.
01:45All of my pumpkins, I think, and my carves
01:48have a little bit of whimsy to them.
01:50All of these tools that I would use as an art teacher
01:53come in handy when I'm doing pumpkin carving.
01:55This is actually a tool used for printmaking,
01:57and I'm slicing in and creating that raised hair effect.
02:03I've got some potatoes over here
02:06that I think would be perfect for the fangs
02:09and maybe also the eyes.
02:11I'd say I'm the best pumpkin carver
02:12because I can carve really quickly.
02:14I can do really fine details.
02:16I want a flat-ish section
02:18so that I can attach it to the face,
02:21and that should be good.
02:22I've learned really quickly how to do what I do,
02:25and I'm determined to win.
02:27You have a nice, finished, textured pumpkin
02:32ready to scare all of your friends and neighbors.
02:35It would mean the world to me to be on Halloween Wars.
02:37I'm still really new in the pumpkin carving community.
02:40I'm coming to win.
02:41I'm coming to hopefully make some new friends,
02:43but, you know, like, kick some butt.
02:44All right, Halloween Wars,
02:45I'm ready to leave my mark on this competition.
02:48Does Rebecca have what it takes to get picked?
02:51We've still got a lot of other artists to meet.
02:53Behind every great team is a cake artist
02:55who can scare up some of the creepiest cake creations
02:58you've ever seen.
02:59I'd like to introduce you to Frida Frostbite.
03:02We're talking about the stuff that nightmares are made of.
03:05The fact that you left the roots of the teeth showing
03:08is probably the grimmest path of the whole thing for me.
03:12So each team needs the most horrifically haunting cake artist we can find.
03:16Ew, first of all.
03:17This looks like it belongs in a museum.
03:20Next, we meet a cake artist and content creator
03:23whose favorite part of Halloween is definitely the costumes.
03:26Hi, my name is Tanisha Billington.
03:28I'm from Passaic, New Jersey, and I am a cake artist.
03:31I grew up in Georgetown, Guyana, South America.
03:34Very small country.
03:36After meeting my husband here, I moved.
03:39The night of Halloween, he asked me to marry him, and I said yes.
03:42You know, I left my business.
03:43I left my family and everything.
03:45I had to rebuild.
03:47So I just started posting content online.
03:49Brands started to reach out and be like,
03:51oh, hey, I want to work with you.
03:52And I'm like, me?
03:54I already have my dragon cake, already sculpted out.
03:57But we're going to add the eyes, and then we're going to go with our
04:00airbrush just to add some definition.
04:02I've been drawing my entire life.
04:05As far back as I can remember, I draw on the wall.
04:09I initially started about 10 years ago making cakes.
04:12I love bringing characters to life.
04:15I cosplay a lot of characters, and I realized I could make
04:18all the cakes and do the cake in the cosplays.
04:20So we can already see how much cooler this looks,
04:22because when we first started, it was just sharp lines separating the white and the red.
04:27But now that I've added the ombre, it just looks like everything is just
04:31smoothly flowing into each other.
04:34I've spent the past 12 years just building my skill,
04:39whether it was painting, sculpting, and just challenging myself.
04:43I'm awesome.
04:43I'm amazing.
04:45Look what I was able to do with my hands.
04:48And most times I'm like with three tools.
04:51Three tools.
04:52I'm like, you know?
04:54I really want to win to make my country proud.
04:57Not many of us are able to do stuff outside of Ghana like this.
05:01I'm definitely coming to win.
05:03I hope everyone bring their A game, because I'm bringing my A plus game.
05:07So now we have a dragon, an evil fairy, and a sword to cut the cake.
05:12But is it good enough to earn Tanisha a spot on Halloween Wars?
05:16This is definitely the winning cake right here.
05:19We'll find out soon.
05:23No Halloween Wars team is complete without a master sugar artist.
05:26It just has a short window of time that it stays flexible at that temperature.
05:31There are amazing techniques from blown sugar.
05:34That's perfect.
05:35Pulled sugar, spun sugar.
05:38Spinning the sugar right there.
05:39Or even tempered chocolate.
05:41The coolest thing ever.
05:42To new heights or new frights.
05:45It is vicious.
05:46It is cheeky.
05:47It is menacing, but cute at the same time.
05:50So next, we'll meet a sugar artist who says he has all those skills,
05:54plus a serious ax to grind.
05:57My name is Nils Roland.
05:59I live in St. Augustine, Florida.
06:01And I own Creme de la Cocoa.
06:03I've been doing pastry for 19 years.
06:06This will be the third time I've done Halloween Wars.
06:08Nils this dessert.
06:10It's incredible.
06:11This is very successful.
06:12I want to throw this at you.
06:13It's so good.
06:15I've won most of the competitions I've ever been in.
06:18I just can't seem to crack winning on Halloween Wars.
06:21I'll be 80 on there competing and be like,
06:22this guy has done like 40 shows and I don't know why he keeps coming back,
06:26but he's trying.
06:27Welcome to the kitchen Halloween Wars.
06:29Come take a peek at my pumpkin creep.
06:31We're gonna have some of the vines growing out of his nose and some leaves coming off.
06:35And we're gonna sugar is gonna make this whole piece pop.
06:38Sugar always makes everything pop.
06:40I really love sugar work because it's a little bit difficult.
06:43It takes talent.
06:44It takes skill.
06:45It's hot.
06:46It's the medium that you have to know what you're doing in order for it to work.
06:50But it's just amazing how thin you can actually get it.
06:54Because you're just pulling basically like wires, right?
06:58A few summers ago, I had to have emergency heart surgery and I almost died.
07:02It was really crazy, but it really changed the perspective of everything.
07:06You can lose everything really quickly.
07:08And for me, being a dad and a husband and a family is the most important part for me.
07:14And when it comes to Halloween Wars, it's the same thing.
07:17You know, I'm going out there for them.
07:19I'm going out there for my family.
07:21And what does every Halloween thing have that this one doesn't have so far?
07:26Just a little bit of horror.
07:28So we're going to add a little bit of sugar blood dripping out just to tie it in a touch.
07:33You don't want to go too crazy and scared of kids that don't sleep.
07:36I think you should pick me for Halloween Wars this season because I'm just going to keep showing up
07:42and showing out and doing the best that I possibly can to try and get to my goal of winning.
07:47Time to cut the cake.
07:49It's the thing at the shop that everybody gives me the most grief about.
07:54Oh, dang. Because I'm really great at what I do, but oh, can't win on TV.
08:00I would love to have the chance to stop that sort of nagging and ragging they got on me.
08:06You guys excited for daddy to go on Halloween Wars?
08:09Yeah.
08:09Yeah? Are we going to win?
08:10Yeah.
08:11I'm coming back for the third time and I'm not leaving until I win this one.
08:17Will Nils get his shot at redemption? We'll find out soon.
08:20But first, just down the street from Nils, we'll meet another scary good cake artist.
08:24My name is Jessica Carr. I have been a cake artist for about 13 years now.
08:28I got into cake decorating while I was in college for psychology and advertising.
08:34Every time I got stressed out, I would bake and that made me happy.
08:38And so I decided I was going to go to school for baking a pastry.
08:41I actually am just going to go in with this paint brush and push up the modeling chocolate
08:48into the crevices where the teeth meet.
08:51What I love most about cake is you can use them to celebrate everything and anything.
08:56It's like, I got married. Here's a cake. I got divorced. Here's a cake.
09:00I'm having a book club. Here's a cake shaped like a book.
09:03With the blood, you can add it on. You can also paint some on.
09:09I love Halloween because my birthday is actually October 20th.
09:13So I many a time had our backyard turned into a haunted house.
09:17I mean, I was born in October. It's like literally in my veins.
09:21I am coming to win Halloween Wars.
09:25That's all red blood.
09:26I have three kids, five-year-olds, a three-year-old, and a seven-month-old.
09:30My kids will sometimes help me bake.
09:33They will like roll things out and have fun with it.
09:36Cheers!
09:37I think you should pick me for Halloween Wars because I am great at what I do.
09:42My kids have given me the best time management skills that I know
09:47would help me crush in this competition.
09:49Thanks for stopping by Halloween Wars.
09:51You better pick me or I'm going to send my little monsters after you.
09:55Coming up, we'll meet even more horrifying cake, sugar, and pumpkin artists
09:59who dream of making their mark on Halloween Wars.
10:02Plus, a sneak peek at the new season when the road to Halloween Wars continues.
10:09Halloween Wars is carving up some of the most terrifying feats of cake, sugar, and carved
10:15pumpkin you can ever imagine.
10:17Some are frightening.
10:18I don't fully know what it looks like to splay open a belly and find donuts, but I imagine
10:23it looks just like that.
10:24Some are horrific.
10:25Looking at your display, like, I am so cold looking at it.
10:27I have the chills, so that was super effective.
10:30And others just plain gross.
10:32Oh.
10:33Is it working?
10:34Yeah.
10:34Oh, yeah.
10:35How did it look?
10:36So disgusting.
10:38Okay, um, that special effect was really interesting.
10:41It was gross.
10:42It'll take somebody who's seriously twisted to try to top some of these creations,
10:47but a cake artist in Las Vegas thinks she's up to the task.
10:50Is she twisted enough to get selected for the new season?
10:54So this is my kitchen.
10:55Come on in.
10:57As you can see, I like black.
10:59Black is everything.
11:01I am Natalie Collins Fish.
11:02I've been a cake artist since 2006.
11:05I became a cake artist because I was actually going to go to art school,
11:10but my mom told me that I cannot be an artist because I will be a starving artist,
11:16so I decided to make art with food because at least I won't be hungry.
11:21I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, and then I worked for Thomas Keller,
11:25Jean-Georges, Joel Robichon, and Tom Colicchio.
11:29My life is cake.
11:30Everything in my life revolves around cake.
11:33I even have it on my knuckles.
11:35It says cake life.
11:36You want to play too?
11:40My family calls me Natty, but most of the time I go by mommy or bruh.
11:45I have two boys and they are my biggest fans.
11:49Landon thinks that I'm like the best cake decorator ever.
11:54He tells everybody that I'm famous because he thinks I'm famous.
11:58So here I have made a version of myself of what I look like in the morning when I wake up.
12:03I don't have a big gap in my teeth though.
12:06We are going to keep working on her here.
12:08I refer to myself as like the Picasso of cake artistry because I have a very unique style.
12:14I feel like a lot of cake artists are similar to each other, but I have a creative chaos to my work,
12:21and it definitely has its own vibe.
12:24So what I have here is I have a mixture of my blood.
12:27As you can see, it's very bloody.
12:29This is cherry jello with water.
12:34We could throw it at her.
12:35I think I'm the best cake artist for Halloween Wars because my style is something that most people
12:42know. Nobody has.
12:43I have a very unique style.
12:45I also can work very, very quickly.
12:47I've done stuff most cake artists would think is impossible to do.
12:51Done.
12:53Does she look like me?
12:55Halloween Wars, I'm coming for you.
12:57And we're going to show you what cake life is all about.
13:01Now that's a tough act to follow.
13:03Next up, we hit the road to Loosedale,
13:05Mississippi to meet another pumpkin carver who dreams of getting picked for the new season.
13:09Halloween Wars.
13:10What's crackalacking?
13:11Come on in.
13:13But watch your heads.
13:14My name is Brian.
13:17So I've been carving pumpkins now for about 14 years.
13:19The first thing that even sparked me to want to do it was watching Ray Villafane on that first
13:23season of Halloween Wars and just seeing how he could sculpt and create crazy pieces.
13:29So I just jumped in, started learning some of the tricks of the trade, watching some videos here
13:34and there until I finally figured out kind of what techniques worked.
13:37I was shaving it.
13:37I'm using basically a wood rasp.
13:39It carves pumpkin skin off.
13:41I've been an emergency nurse practitioner 20 years now.
13:44I would say favorite aspects of it is just being able to make a difference,
13:47especially in the ER.
13:48We do anything from sewing folks up, treating runny noses, to broken bones.
13:53So it is chaotic at times.
13:56It's like Halloween Wars if you think about it.
13:59It looks terrifying.
14:00I would be too if I woke up and saw me.
14:03I mean, I've always liked art.
14:05I've always been involved in drawing like from as far back as I can remember.
14:08I remember as a kid, I was just constantly picking up books and trying to teach myself.
14:12I very much love drawing cartoons.
14:14I think that cartoons kind of carry over into my caricatures whenever I'm carving.
14:18This is where we're going to put his magic potion in with a little dab of green food coloring.
14:23I've got six children.
14:24Sometimes they get frustrated because I'm carving like all the time during the season.
14:28My wife, as much as she'll pick at me about carving pumpkins, she's usually the one that goes
14:33out and gets me my first one each year.
14:35That is my little tribe, my little support group.
14:37We could give him legs, but I want him running off.
14:40The reason I'm the best pumpkin carver for this show, it's certainly not looks.
14:44I can assure you that.
14:45You better have two lenses whenever you record me, because look at me.
14:49Unless that lens is tough, it's going to break.
14:51What I'm bringing to Halloween Wars is comedic relief, one.
14:55Two, maybe some chaos.
14:57I'm not afraid to mess with somebody's mind if I got to in order to gain an edge.
15:00If nothing else, I'm going to say a lot of stupid things.
15:03I'm going to be energized the whole time.
15:04I'm like perpetual pumpkin power.
15:08There you go.
15:09Triple P, baby.
15:10That's me.
15:13You met my Dr. Jekyll.
15:15Don't make me break out high.
15:16Is perpetual pumpkin power enough to earn a place on one of our teams?
15:20We'll find out soon.
15:22Next, we head out west to California to meet a pharmacist turned cake artist.
15:27With a terrifying secret in the fridge.
15:30Or maybe it's just a cake.
15:34I'm Rochelle Raylesteri.
15:35I'm from San Jose, California.
15:37I'm a pharmacist.
15:38I'm also a cake artist.
15:39I work remotely.
15:41So working from home allows me to just have a creative side.
15:45So I just started making cakes for my kids.
15:48And so I started documenting all of my baking on social media.
15:52But then to my surprise, people started following me.
15:55And it just kind of exploded from there.
15:57It's really important to get the finishing details,
15:59because it creates the character.
16:00Like if I don't get her spooky enough,
16:02it's just going to take away from what you're trying to accomplish.
16:06I was born in Quezon City, Philippines.
16:09We moved to the United States when I was about seven years old.
16:11I didn't grow up knowing about ghost stories and horror stories.
16:16And so now I'm just really into Halloween.
16:19It thrills me.
16:20I love it.
16:20If my mom makes him on Halloween Wars, she'd probably win.
16:24We'll see.
16:25The idea is to add dimension.
16:28It would mean a lot to me to win Halloween Wars, because I would just be so proud of myself
16:35for being self-taught and making it this far.
16:37The challenge on this show is to not focus on the super tiny, tiny details,
16:42because this is going to be super time consuming.
16:45You should pick me for Halloween Wars, because I'm creative.
16:48I have a lot of energy.
16:50I'm happy with her.
16:51I'm ready.
16:52I'm ready to come to the show, compete, make the biggest and baddest,
16:56spookiest cake ever, and win this competition.
17:03Now, let's jump up to the Pacific Northwest to meet somebody who might look a little familiar.
17:09Hey, Halloween Wars.
17:10Do you remember me?
17:11I'm Jamie Lauchs.
17:12I'm from Seattle, Washington.
17:14And I've been on Halloween Wars twice as a cake artist.
17:17But this time, I want to come back as a sugar artist.
17:22I made it to the end on both seasons that I was on, but it was a loss both times.
17:28Nobody likes to get second place multiple times.
17:31It's a very frustrating feeling.
17:34In the finale of season 14, literally, I had a piece falling apart in front of me,
17:41just cake collapsing.
17:43And I can't leave it that way.
17:46I can't leave that as my last impression on Halloween Wars.
17:49I need to come back and make up for that.
17:51Today, I am making a spectacular insect Halloween-y spooky sugar showpiece.
17:59And I'm just going to add some extra details to it.
18:01Now that I've made my piece out of sugar, I can actually paint on it with alcohol and food colors.
18:07On my first season of Halloween Wars, I was definitely not a sugar artist.
18:12But I am a classically trained pastry chef.
18:15So that means I have been trained in sugar art.
18:18So I've always had the knowledge.
18:20I am a firm believer in constantly learning something new
18:24and keeping yourself creatively fresh and new and active.
18:29I'm going to do what's called a little bit of dry brushing.
18:32And so I will take a little bit of this paint onto my paintbrush here.
18:37And I'm going to actually dry it off on my towel.
18:40And then I can go in here and start doing accents.
18:44So the kind of art that I really enjoy making usually is kind of out of the box.
18:50Lots of color.
18:50I want something larger than life.
18:53The vast majority of my home is very colorful, very quirky.
18:57It makes a statement when you walk in.
19:00And, you know, I see a lot of this kind of coming out in my art.
19:04Zuzi, what's happening?
19:07It's disgusting.
19:08So I live at home with my husband and my two daughters.
19:12I also have two dogs and we have two guinea pigs.
19:15And we have a fish tank loaded with little tiny fish.
19:19There they are.
19:20They're so little.
19:21It's just chaos.
19:23Evie has really funny long butt hair, which makes me laugh.
19:27Such long hair.
19:28Just on her butt.
19:31If you don't invite me back on again,
19:32you're going to have to deal with all of these guys.
19:35The guinea pigs are hungry and they're almost out of lettuce.
19:39You need me on your show again because I can do all of it.
19:45I am the kind of teammate that can help everywhere and really, like,
19:50lift my team up and make sure that we get it done.
19:53I need redemption.
19:54Will Jamie get her shot at redemption?
19:57We'll find out soon.
19:58Halloween Wars is more than just scare-raising displays.
20:11It's also home to some of the most deliciously disgusting
20:14edible creations you could ever imagine.
20:17So this is a caramelized onion and pear bonbon.
20:20This is a very bold, confident, assertive bite.
20:25Dig your fingers in the grass.
20:27Oh my gosh, what is happening?
20:30What is it?
20:31Oh my god.
20:36It's a blood orange gummy.
20:41It's gummy.
20:42Caramel popcorn.
20:43The idea was to create a box to create a surprise.
20:50Wow.
20:51What?
20:51So for the tasting element, we have a soy sauce,
20:54salted caramel truffle, but it is infused
20:56with fresh lime zest and candied ginger to cut the sweetness.
21:00This bite is so trippy.
21:01It gives me sushi vibes.
21:03Yes.
21:03Right?
21:04Yes.
21:04It's just genius.
21:05I can't even with you.
21:07We have to go because the judges are going to eat all of them.
21:10Thank you guys.
21:11Who else can make your mouth water while they send chills down your spine?
21:15Let's find out as we head to Utah to meet a cake artist who thinks she has what it takes to get
21:19picked for the new season.
21:20My name is Kylie Holt.
21:21I am a custom cake artist from Clinton, Utah.
21:25By day, I am a Zumba instructor, and by night, I am a cake artist.
21:29When I was 11, my dad sent me to space camp in Florida, and I fell in love with space.
21:37And at that point, I decided I'm going to do whatever it takes to be an astronaut.
21:42I finally got accepted to the United States Air Force Academy, and I was miserable there.
21:49So I came home, I married my sweetheart, and I knew I needed something as a stay-at-home mom
21:56to keep me busy and to keep my creative juices flowing.
21:59And that's when I started picking up cakes, and it just took off from there.
22:02Whenever I do a piece, I always try and think about color.
22:07How are the colors going to work together?
22:09I'm just going to use a little bit of brown gel and a little bit of orange gel color.
22:15And I'm mixing this with a little bit of water.
22:18I may not have made it to space yet, but my cakes defy gravity.
22:24And I use the science and the math and everything that I learned to become an astronaut
22:30in my cake designing. I mean, cake is a lot of science.
22:33See how the paint is all gathered in one little puddle right there?
22:37That's okay, because when it dries, it will give a really neat look to these rocks.
22:42This is definitely not my first rodeo.
22:44I participated in several different competitions throughout the years.
22:48I won Best in Show in the Sugar Artists of Utah competition.
22:52I've also had my work printed in several magazines.
22:55So while I know I'm going to be competing against some amazing talent,
23:00I think they've got something coming for them.
23:03Will Kylie's cake skills earn her a place on one of our teams?
23:05We've still got a few more artists to meet.
23:07As our road trip continues, we make our way to Illinois to meet a sugar artist
23:12who really knows her stuff.
23:13My name is Becky Miranda.
23:15My full-time job is being a mom, and my part-time job is doing sugar art
23:22and teaching other people how to do sugar art.
23:25My business is 5'2 Baker because I'm a baker that is only 5'2.
23:31I always had to use my daughter's stepping stool.
23:35All the shelves are always too high for me to reach.
23:38Most of the year, I spend my time making beautiful things, some pretty sugar flowers,
23:43but tis the season, so we're going to work on something a little more spooky,
23:48and we're going to create a little friend for my giant sugar spider here.
23:53I think what makes my sugar art different and unique are the mediums that I use.
23:59I actually created my own flower paste, so I'm most known for my flexible flowers.
24:05You'll notice that as you roll it out, it's pretty translucent.
24:13You can get it really thin.
24:15You could actually rip pieces off and eat them.
24:19Just as an example here go, some snowdrops that I made, some unpainted morning glories.
24:28So you want to be careful when you're doing this and just do not full pumps,
24:32but you just want to do little micro pumps so that you can see the ball growing.
24:39I am comfortable working with tons of different mediums, tons of different ways,
24:46and I haven't gone to school, so there is no just one right way for me to do things.
24:51It's allowed me to really explore and find my way and do things that other people normally would not do.
24:57If you pick me for Halloween Wars, you're not going to be disappointed.
25:03You're going to see a lot of cool things.
25:05It would mean the world to me to be on Halloween Wars, to know that everything I'm doing is valued
25:15and is worth it, and I'm good.
25:16Halloween Wars, I can't wait to show everyone what I can do.
25:19Now that's what I call a sugar spider, but is Becky the scream of the crop?
25:25We'll find out soon enough. Next up, we head to the heart of New York City
25:28to meet a Halloween-obsessed cake artist who's big on the creep factor.
25:32My name is Serena Harnett. I am a first-generation Cambodian-American.
25:37I was actually born in a refugee camp there, but I basically grew up in the United States.
25:42Halloween, it was actually something that I will always remember, especially as a kid.
25:46Dressing up, trick-or-treating, egging people, running away from bullies,
25:50and those are things I absolutely love doing. My husband and I moved to the city about 10 years ago.
25:55Cake design and decorating is just something I picked up on the fly. I'm totally self-taught.
26:01I do have an art background, though. I studied it in college, so it's really helpful for me.
26:05The name of my business is Deadly Dame Cakes, and I just came up with it because my husband
26:11and I are very much into the pin-up community and tiki and whatnot, and so it's just something I
26:18conjured up at 3 o'clock in the morning, so that's how I came about.
26:21This is where the glam lives, friends. We have here our vintage and faux stools,
26:31skirts, shirts, heels, a collection of them. All of the dresses, various colors.
26:39And of course, here are all of the bags that I reach for on the daily, so as you can see here,
26:44my beloved pumpkin head is my favorite, so he's at the forefront, so absolutely love him.
26:50My specialty is horror-themed and Halloween-themed cakes, but I do everything. It would mean the
26:57absolute world to me to be picked for Halloween Awards. It is the Olympics of Halloween. I'm bringing
27:05the spook factor, I'm bringing the sculpt, I'm bringing the artistry, and I'm bringing myself,
27:10and that is why I'm going to win Halloween Wars.
27:12Sometimes the scares in Halloween Wars aren't just our team's creepy creations. When pumpkin,
27:27cake, or sugar go bump in the night, the results can be terrifying.
27:32We have a breach. Oh, no. Oh, I think she's fixing it.
27:38It's falling apart, guys. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
27:42Oh, my God. That leg is on the ground. Damn. Oh, my gosh. Hold it, hold it, hold it. Oh, my God.
27:49The cake is falling. Oh, no. What just fell? His lamp. The lamp cracked. Yeah, but it looked messy.
27:57Oh, no. The chain broke. Chain just fell. Oh, I don't even want to look. No, don't. I don't even
28:03want to look. I decided to just quickly get some black buttercream and start drawing the face on for him.
28:11No. Oh, no. No. The whole thing fell off. Oh, I feel so bad for Matt. Sure, you can't stop gravity,
28:19but we're looking for artists with the skills and drive to recover and take their teams to new heights.
28:25Hi, my name's Kimberly Rivers. I'm from Farmington, Utah. So I started doing wedding cakes and sugar
28:31about five years ago. I just started out making cakes for my kids for their birthdays, and then
28:35neighbors started asking me. And then I decided, you know, if I'm going to start selling them,
28:39I should probably make an official business. And from there, it just started to grow.
28:42So we're going to start off by melting some isomalt. We decided we're going to make a purple pumpkin.
28:50As I spread the isomalt out, it will start to cool.
28:53I draw a lot of inspiration, actually, from my friends. We have a lot of fun getting together
28:58and doing what we call edible photo shoots. And so we'll dress up in character and we'll create
29:03all of our accessories, jewelry, just different items that we can use to go along with our characters.
29:08And this kind of just takes practice of knowing where it needs to be placed.
29:13Stick that in there. Halloween, when I was a kid, was the most fun holiday ever. And now,
29:19as a mom, I want my kids to have the same experience. Just the one night that you can go
29:23out and just kind of just be crazy. Here, let's all get some chocolate chips. Here,
29:27you can all have some. I'm going to throw one and catch it in my mouth.
29:29I'm a stay-at-home mom, which is actually my most favorite job in the whole world.
29:33I love my kids so much. And we also love to bake together. My kids love to come in the kitchen and
29:38help me make all kinds of things. Usually on Sundays is our bake day. Don't eat the chocolate chips.
29:43I want to do Halloween Wars because I love pushing myself to the next level. I definitely
29:49want to win and just kick everyone's butts. You should pick me for Halloween Wars because I'm
29:55first off willing to work really hard. I'm going to put in all the energy that I have and all my
30:00knowledge and to make the piece as best as I can. Halloween Wars, I am coming for you. I want to win
30:06this. I got all the skills. I got the sugar. I got the cake. And you better watch out.
30:10Does Kimberly have the skills to get picked? We'll find out soon.
30:15Now we make our way to Chicago to meet a pumpkin carver who might be young,
30:19but knows how to bring the scares. Halloween Wars, what are you doing here?
30:26Just kidding. You can come in. Okay. Come on.
30:32My name is Ethan Anderson. I am 23 years old and I am a full-time artist. I consider myself a
30:38multidisciplinary artist. I do sculpture. I do carving. I do illustration, painting,
30:43and primarily animation.
30:47All right. I'm using this pointy loop to etch out some bricks right now. I started carving pumpkins
30:54since my parents let me pick up a knife. And then I saw the first season of Halloween Wars and that
31:00skyrocketed me into practicing as much as I could. When I first started competing in carbon competitions,
31:07I think I was just viewed as like the young guy. But after having some experience in competitions under
31:13my belt, I think I've gained the respect of all of my peers. Well, what do you think about this?
31:18Beautiful. Beautiful. I think I'm a combination of both creative and incredibly thoughtful, smart,
31:26and methodical. What makes me the best for a pumpkin carving competition is like, well, I'm the tallest
31:33and the strongest and the prettiest. So put that on top of my pumpkin carving skills, like they should
31:39all leave before they show up. What are we doing here? Come on now. Before I watched Halloween Wars and
31:45then was inspired to go sculpt, I had only ever done drawings and paintings. And so really being
31:52able to compete and having the chance to win would be such a full circle moment to show where that brought
31:58me. All right, girls, what do you think? Wow, it's so amazing. I'm bringing my creativity, my technical
32:06skill, my winning personality, my charming good looks. There's nothing more that you could ever want.
32:10Here I am. I'm going, you know, the next winner of Halloween Wars. I'm going to come to Halloween
32:14Wars more prepared, more confident, and more excited than anybody else. I'm not scared of
32:19anything, but they should all be scared of me. Halloween Wars, search for the next crop of cake
32:27artists, sugar artists, and pumpkin carvers who dream of being picked for the new season, just keeps
32:32on trucking as we hit the road to Grand Junction, Colorado to meet a pumpkin fanatic who knows how to
32:38think big. Hello, I'm Willie Toos. Welcome to Western Colorado Botanic Gardens. Come on in.
32:44This is where I create the largest pumpkin sculptures in Western Colorado. I am a professional pumpkin
32:50carver. I got into pumpkin carving 15 years ago. I grew up in Cancun, New Mexico. My dad was a chef
32:57and he used to do small carvings with vegetables. When I was eight years old, I start carving fruit and
33:03vegetables. Watermelon was one of my favorite fruits to carve. That's what got me into pumpkin carving.
33:09This is our first pumpkin of the season and we're ready to carve. I use a couple of tools. These are
33:16clay tools, but they are reinforced to be used for pumpkins and it's actually sharpening all the way
33:22down so it can go through the pumpkins easy. When Halloween season comes, I create really large
33:30sculptures here at the gardens. We use a thousand pumpkins to make this happen. This year at the
33:36gardens, I'm hoping to create larger than life sculptures with 1200 pumpkins for everyone to see.
33:42This is one of my favorite tools to do little details on the pumpkins because it lets you add
33:47little wrinkle on the skins and you can go deep with it but without cutting a lot of the skin of the
33:53pumpkin. I am a single dad. This is my son Willy, my best friend. My son is 18 years old. I introduced
34:01him to pumpkin carving. He actually helps me with the projects that we do every year. Oh like a boat?
34:07Yeah, or a boat sinking. That's a good idea. Working with my son Willy definitely helps me and motivates me
34:14too. So when this type of competition comes, I always want to go win and show him everything is possible.
34:21I have been in Halloween Wars before. I really enjoy the competition. Oh my gosh. What is it?
34:30That's awesome. I was so close to winning, I made it to the final. This is the year that I really want
34:36to go and bring the prize home. Halloween Wars should pick me because I bring a lot of passion in each work
34:44that I do. And then for two, this style of work that I bring in, it's kind of unique. Halloween Wars,
34:50I'm coming for the win this time. Now we head back to Florida to meet a paralegal turned sugar artist
34:57who serves up detailed sugar delicacies with a distinctly Florida flair. I'm Kelly Shivery. I live
35:03in Wellington, Florida. I really got into sugar art by making cakes for my children when they were small.
35:11And I was really fascinated with isomalt and how versatile it is. My sugar art is different because I
35:19really like to have a little nod to Florida in all my pieces. Today, I'm just finishing up my lovely
35:28Merdusa. We'll call her my Medusa mermaid. So I frequently get up very early in the morning and work
35:35on sugar and cake projects before I start work at eight. I'll use a variety of edible paint and petal dust.
35:44And then when I get off work again, I do sugar work and cake. Just like a mullet, she's going to be
35:50business in the front, party in the back. I really enjoy the gory aspect of Halloween because I think
35:59it's really fun to have like a dessert imposter. It's fun to me to make something that looks like
36:04a gory finger, but it's a really tasty treat. Hands off my piece. Being on Halloween Wars is a bucket list
36:12item for sure. She is ready for her close-up. Halloween Wars, I'm coming. That's pretty creepy,
36:19but is it creepy enough to earn a spot on one of our teams? We're about to find out. Coming up,
36:25we'll find out whose skills are terrifying enough to get picked for the new season and
36:31get a special sneak peek when the road to Halloween Wars continues.
36:35Halloween Wars is more than just scare-raising displays.
36:43It's also home to some of the most deliciously disgusting edible creations you could ever imagine.
36:49So this is a caramelized onion and pear bonbon. This is a very bold, confident, assertive bite.
36:57Dig your fingers in the grass. Oh my gosh, what is happening? Oh, what is it? Oh my god.
37:09It's a blood orange gummy.
37:13It's gummy.
37:14Caramel popcorn. The idea was to create a box to create a surprise.
37:19Oh, wow. What? So for the tasting element, we have a soy sauce, salted caramel truffle,
37:27but it is infused with fresh lime zest and candied ginger to cut the sweetness. This bite is so trippy.
37:33It gives me sushi vibes. Yes. Right? Yes. It's just genius. I can't even with you. We have to go because
37:40the judges are going to eat all of them. Thank you guys. Who else can make your mouth water while they
37:45send chills down your spine? Let's find out as we head to Utah to meet a cake artist who thinks she
37:50has what it takes to get picked for the new season. My name is Kylie Holt. I am a custom cake artist from

47:46Beautiful. Beautiful. I think I'm a combination of both creative and incredibly thoughtful, smart,
47:53and methodical. What makes me the best for a pumpkin carving competition is like, well, I'm the tallest
48:00and the strongest and the prettiest. So put that on top of my pumpkin carving skills, like they should
48:06all leave when before they show up. What are we doing here? Come on now. Before I watched Halloween
48:12Wars and then was inspired to go sculpt, I had only ever done drawings and paintings. And so really
48:19being able to compete and having the chance to win would be such a full circle moment to show where
48:25that brought me. All right, girls, what do you think? Wow, it's so amazing. I'm bringing my creativity,
48:32my technical skill, my winning personality, my charming good looks. There's nothing more that you could
48:37ever want. Here I am. I'm going, you know, the next winner of Halloween Wars. I'm going to come to
48:41Halloween Wars more prepared, more confident, and more excited than anybody else. I'm not scared of
48:47anything, but they should all be scared of me. Halloween Wars. Search for the next crop of cake
48:54artists, sugar artists, and pumpkin carvers who dream of being picked for the new season just keeps
49:00on trucking as we hit the road to Grand Junction, Colorado to meet a pumpkin fanatic who knows how to
49:05think big. Hello, I'm Willie Toos. Welcome to Western Colorado Botanic Gardens. Come on in.
49:11This is where I create the largest pumpkin sculptures in Western Colorado. I am a professional pumpkin
49:17carver. I got into pumpkin carving 15 years ago. I grew up in Cancun, New Mexico. My dad was a chef
49:24and he used to do small carvings with vegetables. When I was eight years old, I start carving fruit and
49:30vegetables. Watermelon was one of my favorite fruits to carve. That's what got me into pumpkin carving.
49:36This is our first pumpkin of the season and we're ready to carve. I use a couple of tools. These are
49:43clay tools, but they are reinforced to be used for pumpkins and it's actually sharpened all the way down
49:50so it can go through the pumpkins easy. When Halloween season comes, I create really large sculptures
49:58here at the gardens. We use a thousand pumpkins to make this happen. This year at the gardens,
50:04I'm hoping to create larger-than-life sculptures with 1,200 pumpkins for everyone to see. This is one of
50:10my favorite tools to do little details on the pumpkins because it lets you add little wrinkle on the skins
50:17and you can go deep with it but without cutting a lot of the skin of the pumpkin. I am a single dad.
50:22This is my son Willy, my best friend. My son is 18 years old. I introduced him to pumpkin carving. He
50:29actually helps me with the projects that we do every year. Oh, like a boat? Yeah, or a boat sinking.
50:36That's a good idea. Working with my son Willy definitely helps me and motivates me too. So when this
50:42type of competition comes, I always want to go win and show him everything is possible. I have been in
50:49Halloween Wars before. I really enjoy the competition. Oh my gosh. What is it?
50:57That's awesome. I was so close to winning, I made it to the final. This is the year that I really want
51:03to go and bring the prize home. Halloween Wars should pick me because I bring a lot of passion in
51:10each work that I do and then for two, the style of work that I bring in, it's kind of unique. Halloween
51:17Halloween Wars. I'm coming for the win this time. Now we head back to Florida to meet a paralegal
51:23turned sugar artist who serves up detailed sugar delicacies with a distinctly Florida flair. I'm
51:29Kelly Shivery. I live in Wellington, Florida. I really got into sugar art by making cakes for my children
51:37when they were small. And I was really fascinated with isomalt and how versatile it is. My sugar art is
51:45different because I really like to have a little nod to Florida in all my pieces. Today I'm just
51:52finishing up my lovely merdusa, we'll call her my medusa mermaid. So I frequently get up very early in the
52:01morning and work on sugar and cake projects before I start work at eight. I'll use a variety of edible paint
52:09and petal dust. And then when I get off work again, I do sugar work and cake. Just like a mullet,
52:17she's going to be business in the front, party in the back. I really enjoy the gory aspect of Halloween
52:25because I think it's really fun to have like a dessert imposter. It's fun to me to make something
52:31that looks like a gory finger, but it's a really tasty treat. Hands off my piece. Being on Halloween
52:38Wars is a bucket list item for sure. She is ready for her close-up. Halloween Wars, I'm coming.
52:45That's pretty creepy, but is it creepy enough to earn a spot on one of our teams? We're about to find out.
52:52Coming up, we'll find out whose skills are terrifying enough to get picked for the new season and
52:56get a special sneak peek when the road to Halloween Wars continues.
53:07It's the last stop on our road trip to meet the greatest cake artists, sugar artists,
53:11and pumpkin carvers in the country who dream of competing in Halloween Wars 15.
53:16What better place to stop than Anaheim, California to meet a talented sugar artist whose skills are
53:21downright scary. I'm Andy de la Cruz. I am a pastry chef here at the Westin Anaheim Resort.
53:28I have been making cakes and baking cookies and whatnot for 30 years. I worked in restaurants and
53:34then from a restaurant I worked at a hotel and then never left the hotel industry after that. And so I
53:39learned a lot from the people that I work with and the chefs that I worked under. I enjoy designing cakes.
53:45Look at just any kind of art, whether it's pictures or sculptures and translate that into desserts is very
53:52unique for me. Remember the magic number is 165. I've been working with sugar for years now.
53:59Sugar work is its own art in itself because you're dealing with temperature and you're dealing with
54:05time. I feel like chocolate is a little bit more forgiving than sugar work and you're dealing with
54:10heat and your fingertips can only handle so much heat. By doing this this also helps you to capture
54:18more of the details. So for Halloween we create a lobby display for our guests to enjoy. We take
54:25themes from movies or whatnot and we just create this little piece of scenery and it's all made out of
54:32chocolate and candy and whatnot. Nothing is supposed to be perfect so in life nothing is perfect. In nature
54:39nothing is perfect so it's one of the things I like about our trees. You have to pick me for Halloween
54:45Wars because not only will you get a person that knows how to work with a lot of mediums but I work
54:53great under pressure. I love what I do. I am very hungry and I want to win this so bad. I'm going to
54:59bring everything. Nothing is going to be held back and I'm going to go for it. Watch out.
55:03Halloween Wars has crisscrossed the country in search of the most talented cake, sugar and pumpkin
55:11artists who dream of competing in the new season. Now it's time to find out which of the artists we
55:16met tonight will join this year's crop of Halloween warriors. From our pumpkin carvers we got Willie and
55:23Rebecca. Congratulations. You're going to be on Halloween Wars. No way. Oh my god that's amazing. Oh
55:32goodness I can't wait to show off my pumpkin carving skills. This is going to be so cool. For our sugar
55:37artists Kelly. Really? You're not you're not pranking me are you? Mills. Yeah I'm back baby. Kimberly
55:47and Jamie. Yes. Woo. And from the cake artists Natalie. I told you I was good at this. Serena.
55:55Oh my gosh. Kylie. Oh my gosh I am so excited. This has been a bucket list show of mine
56:03all of these years. I am so excited. I finally made it on the show. And Tanisha. Oh my god no way. Are you
56:10Are you for real? That means Andy, Jessica, Rachel, Becky, Ethan and Brian didn't quite make it.
56:18But they're still scary good artists. Now let's meet this year's terrifying teams. Poisonous
56:24Perfection. The Under Cakers. Crumb Creepers. Graveyard Shift. Terrifying Trio. Wicked Sculptors.
56:35And Oven Coven. These ghoulish groups are stacked and ready to kill it on this season of Halloween
56:43Wars. Seven teams of the best pumpkin, cake and sugar artists battle it out in the most wicked
56:53season of Halloween Wars yet. Oh my god. I'm getting big fight energy. This is the first time I've ever
56:59seen anything like this. Halloween Wars is the Olympic for pumpkin carvers and cake artists.
57:05Their designs will be nightmare inducing. When in doubt let's throw blood on it. Unsettling. So gross.
57:11I was triggered. And there will be plenty of terrifying treats. These are gorgeous.
57:18It's delicious. It's creative. This dessert will haunt me for the rest of my life.
57:23The challenges will be more brutal than ever before. We want you to take a stab at a Halloween
57:29style true crime. I know it's Halloween Wars but yikes. The boogeyman's lair. Okay we're freaking
57:35out. A creature on creature contest. Did you see the thighs on that werewolf? Yes. And the misery
57:42will be more horrifying than anything you've seen yet. Something's burning. Oh oh. In the end only
57:49one team will be declared Halloween Wars champions. If we don't get the cake character on we're going
57:54home. And walk away with $25,000. Why is he so slow? We can't all be winners okay? Pop pop. Well that's
58:02the best eyeball I've ever had.
