00:00:00Years ago, on the sea, a little girl in purple clothes was anxiously urging her mother to come
00:00:05ashore. Her mother was one of the many Hino on the island who made a living by fishing.
00:00:11The greedy mother came ashore only after catching abalone. Ready to sell the catch to the fishmonger's
00:00:16son, a nearby Hino asked her to share some with a sick Hino who couldn't dive. A-Soon's mom refused,
00:00:23she was unwilling to pity others at the expense of her own child's hunger.
00:00:27After speaking, she took A-Soon back home. Angry, she questioned why her daughter came to her house,
00:00:33since her ex-husband died, she had remarried and was not responsible for A-Soon, directing her to
00:00:38seek help from her grandmother instead. A-Soon was heartbroken, she wanted to stay and eat at her
00:00:43mother's house, but her grandmother disliked her resemblance to her mother and did not welcome her.
00:00:48Her uncle also refused to give her yellow fish despite her wishes to stay near her mother,
00:00:53heartlessly A-Soon's mom sent her daughter away. As they were leaving, she noticed her new husband
00:00:59hiding cigarettes. For Hino who relies on holding her breath, smoking was akin to a death wish.
00:01:06A-Soon's mom sighed, her husband suggested keeping A-Soon at home. Knowing he wanted her to work and
00:01:12take care of her siblings. However, staying with her grandmother allowed her at least to finish her
00:01:18schooling. She then solemnly picked up a poem A-Soon had left behind, which won second place.
00:01:25A-Soon's poem criticized her mother for only focusing on catching abalone, fearing she might
00:01:30die at sea. One abalone fetched $100, and she wished she could earn that to buy a day off for her mother,
00:01:36to ease her workload. A-Soon's mom cried after reading the poem, touched that her daughter understood her
00:01:41hardship. Meanwhile, A-Soon was preparing dinner for her grandmother's family when Guan-Sik the
00:01:46fishmonger's son who liked A-Soon brought six yellow fish. Claiming to give one to her grandmother's
00:01:52house, he brought an extra for A-Soon. Knowing her uncle wouldn't feed her, just as her uncle took
00:01:58the fish. A-Soon's mom, furious, threw the fish at him, scolding her grandmother's family for
00:02:04mistreating her daughter. She then left with A-Soon, cleaning her face by the sea. Telling her she too
00:02:11wished to spend a whole day with her. She hoped A-Soon would grow up quickly and give her
00:02:16$100 daily so she wouldn't need to dive anymore. Watching her sleeping daughter, A-Soon's mom
00:02:22felt immense relief knowing only this child truly cared for her. From then on A-Soon stayed by her
00:02:29mother's side, one day after school A-Soon came home crying, complaining that although she had the
00:02:34most votes, she was only made deputy class president because a powerful boy's family influenced the
00:02:39decision. Seeing her daughter's breakdown, A-Soon's mom, touched by her plight, helped her pregnant
00:02:44aunt in the fields under the scorching sun and harvested sesame, all to borrow a pearl necklace
00:02:49for a wedding to support her own dignity. A-Soon's mom dressed carefully and went to the school to meet
00:02:55her daughter's teacher. Bringing a box of rice cakes as a gift, she hinted that the rice cakes were
00:03:00special. After she left, the teacher found an envelope stuffed with money inside the box and was very
00:03:06pleased. Walking home with her daughter, A-Soon expressed concern about burdening her mother.
00:03:13Reassuring her that being just the deputy class leader was okay. Her mom encouraged her, saying
00:03:18it was herself who was pitiful, not her daughter, and that she should just enjoy life. That evening,
00:03:23A-Soon's mom threw all her hidden cigarettes into the fire. Planning to quit smoking because her daughter
00:03:28had said that buying her a pearl necklace would be her first act when she grew up, she wanted to live
00:03:33to see that day. However, the next summer, A-Soon's mom fell seriously ill, other who urged her not to
00:03:40dive, saying they would not let her starve, but the stubborn A-Soon's mom preferred to dive than beg.
00:03:46Wanting to leave more money for her children, in a fit of anger A-Soon burned her mother's diving
00:03:51suit and ran out of the house. Throwing stones at the sea and cursing it for not sparing her hardworking
00:03:57mother. Guan-Sik came quietly to her side and offered her roasted chicken. As she cried and
00:04:03ate she declared she would never marry Guan-Sik. In the evening A-Soon's mom woke A-Soon up and
00:04:09prepared roasted abalone for her. Knowing she would not see her daughter get married, she painted her
00:04:15daughter's nails with garden balsam, telling her to go to her grandmother's house after her death.
00:04:20As staying would only mean serving her stepfather, she wanted her uncle to give her away at her
00:04:25wedding, otherwise she would cry in heaven. With tears in her eyes A-Soon's mom lulled her daughter
00:04:30to sleep before passing away. At the funeral A-Soon was in a daze. Guan-Sik brought a bowl of
00:04:35meat soup and seeing him made A-Soon burst into tears, missing her mother. Deeply, A-Soon planned
00:04:41to leave her stepfather's house. But her stepfather said he was going fishing and asked her to take care
00:04:46of her siblings until the tuna season ended. She reluctantly agreed, with her stepfather away she
00:04:52cared for the children and cultivated the land with Guan-Sik's help. As the stepfather kept finding
00:04:58reasons to keep her there. Guan-Sik often brought fish and even a garden balsam hairpin for A-Soon.
00:05:05Tired of her life taking care of her siblings, her stepfather hurriedly reassured her. Promising to
00:05:11earn money for her to study literature on the mainland, which she loved, A-Soon agreed. As time
00:05:16passed, A-Soon worked at a vegetable stall in the market facing Guan-Sik's fish stall. She studied there
00:05:21while he helped her with the stall, bringing her a chair and tidying up. The Hino watched them smiling,
00:05:26feeling that A-Soon's mom would have no regret seeing Guan-Sik take care of A-Soon. Guan-Sik's mom
00:05:32watched her son help A-Soon sell vegetables, calling him a fool. The grandmother disapproved of Guan-Sik
00:05:39working for A-Soon and knocked over her stall. Guan-Sik quickly intervened and sent his grandmother
00:05:45away. He then found A-Soon, helped her change her shoes and quietly listened as she vowed never to marry
00:05:51him. A man who didn't even know classic poetry, she was determined to marry someone from Seoul.
00:05:57Guan-Sik listened silently, nervously fidgeting with his clothes, wishing she would take her hands from
00:06:03his pockets to someone in Seoul. The two went to a canola field where A-Soon saw the fish in Guan-Sik's
00:06:10hand and mocked herself for not needing his pity or charity. Guan-Sik stubbornly turned his head,
00:06:14he wasn't just following her for 10 years out of pity. A-Soon kept asking why,
00:06:19and unable to hold back, Guan-Sik took her hand, stepped forward and kissed her,
00:06:23he wanted to spend his life with her. A-Soon felt especially happy, she returned home to find her
00:06:29sister missing so she searched the house and shockingly discovered her stepfather and his
00:06:33new girlfriend hiding in the closet. The girlfriend did not want to take care of A-Soon and planned to
00:06:39kick her out. A-Soon asked her stepfather for her college tuition, which he had promised to provide,
00:06:45the girlfriend mockingly noted that he was already in debt and had no money for her.
00:06:50A-Soon realized she had to rely on herself, A-Soon reluctantly sought help from her uncle.
00:06:56Hoping he would take her in, however, he wanted her to quit school and work in a factory in Busan.
00:07:02Offering room and board plus a salary, half of which she would send home, unwilling to be exploited
00:07:07by her grandmother's family anymore. A-Soon, feeling desperate, went to Guan-Sik and tearfully asked if his
00:07:13family had a spare room and if he could convince his grandmother to take her in. Now having no home
00:07:18but Guan-Sik's, she broke down, thinking she would end up marrying a local and living a miserable life,
00:07:24Guan-Sik, seemingly foolish, loudly recited. Her favorite nostalgic poem, Furious, A-Soon scolded
00:07:30him for making her live with such a fool. Guan-Sik held her tightly, he didn't dare approach his
00:07:36grandmother but instead planned to elope with A-Soon. Taking money from home, A-Soon also took her
00:07:42stepfather's girlfriend's jewelry and met Guan-Sik dressed in her clothes. Before leaving,
00:07:48A-Soon warned Guan-Sik that once they eloped. There was no turning back, they had to stick
00:07:53together no matter what. Guan-Sik, fearless, kissed her excitedly and took her on a ferry to Busan.
00:08:00On the ferry the crew wanted to check their IDs but they had none since they had run away.
00:08:04Guan-Sik, trembling, tried to bribe the crew with a ring. A-Soon quickly stopped him and loudly
00:08:10declared to the crew that they were a married couple, not runaway kids. In Busan the couple
00:08:15went to a jewelry store to pawn the stolen jewelry. The owner asked several questions and
00:08:19honest Guan-Sik admitted they had run away from home. Owner, suspecting the origins of the jewelry,
00:08:25refused to accept it. Without money they went to a motel hoping to use a ring as collateral for a room.
00:08:31The understanding owner thought they were honeymooners and let them stay.
00:08:35Even providing two bowls of ramen and a bottle of soju for free.
00:08:40Encouraging them to enjoy a passionate night, however. When they woke up drunk,
00:08:44they found their luggage gone. They urgently asked the owner, who claimed they arrived empty-handed
00:08:49and even threatened to call the police on them for trying to stay for free.
00:08:54A-Soon realized the owner had eyed their money and set a trap. Despite their protests,
00:08:58the owner threatened to call the police if they didn't leave as they had no ID cards.
00:09:02Disheartened, Guan-Sik and A-Soon sat by the roadside, after crying. A-Soon decided to get
00:09:08revenge and retrieve their luggage. That night, another female guest arrived. The owner tried to
00:09:13intoxicate her with the same trick, A-Soon, and Guan-Sik warned the guest not to turn off the lights.
00:09:20The owner waited for the guest to fall asleep but eventually had to go to bed herself.
00:09:25Once the owners were asleep, Guan-Sik and A-Soon sneaked in.
00:09:29Guan-Sik went for the cash box and A-Soon looked for their luggage and her mother's photo.
00:09:35As they were leaving, A-Soon saw her hairpin on a little girl and startled her while retrieving it.
00:09:40Which led to their capture by the owner. Guan-Sik dropped the cash box and charged at the owner
00:09:45and both were taken to the police station. The police harshly reprimanded them,
00:09:50hitting A-Soon with a folder and criticizing their elopement.
00:09:53Later, Guan-Sik's mother arrived and first asked about the jewelry. After hearing it was stolen
00:09:58by the motel owner, she went to the motel, calling it a dishonest place and driving the
00:10:02guests away. The owner grabbed Guan-Sik's mother's hair and the two women fought until the police
00:10:07intervened. That morning the owner tried to pawn the jewelry but the jeweler recognized it from the
00:10:12day before and reported her theft to the police. Thus Guan-Sik's mother retrieved the stolen luggage
00:10:17and took the young couple back to Jeju Island. In that era elopement was considered scandalous.
00:10:23A-Soon was expelled from school and everyone on the island soon knew about her actions.
00:10:28Her uncle also scolded her, making it clear she was now unqualified even for factory work.
00:10:34With her past of elopement no man would take her unless she married Guan-Sik.
00:10:39Guan-Sik was trying to convince his family to let him marry A-Soon. His father disagreed with
00:10:44marrying an orphan who had been expelled from school and only had a middle school diploma.
00:10:49Surprised, Guan-Sik rushed to A-Soon's house, finding it unbelievable that while he was suspended,
00:10:55A-Soon was expelled. The grandmother explained that in their time, a man doing the same thing
00:11:00might be called a hero, but a woman would be shamed, knowing not to oppose Guan-Sik directly to
00:11:05avoid worsening his rebellious spirit. His mother went to A-Soon, using Guan-Sik's future as leverage to
00:11:12persuade her not to be a stumbling block in his life. This tactic worked, when Guan-Sik next visited,
00:11:19A-Soon refused to marry him. Her family started looking for other suitors for her. Finding a
00:11:24divorced man with a child who was financially stable and promised to send A-Soon to university
00:11:29within 10 years if she behaved well. He was also willing to fund her poetry publication provided that
00:11:35she bore at least three children. Hearing this, A-Soon felt hopeless about her future filled with
00:11:41childbearing. Hanyo aunts demanded justice for A-Soon and created a scene at Guan-Sik's home.
00:11:47Hearing about A-Soon's arranged marriage, Guan-Sik brought many fish to her house, pleading with the
00:11:52elders to let him marry her instead. Arguing that she should not marry a 30-year-old divorced man,
00:11:57pressured, the uncle said it was A-Soon who didn't want to marry Guan-Sik, driving him nearly insane
00:12:03with confusion. It was A-Soon's grandmother who reminded him to ask what his mother might have
00:12:09said to A-Soon. Meanwhile, A-Soon returned with the man she was set up with. Guan-Sik pulled her away
00:12:16to a canola field, begging her to marry him and even putting a ring on her finger. A-Soon provocatively
00:12:22said that the other man could provide for her education and poetry publication. Guan-Sik insisted he
00:12:28could also work hard to give her the life she wanted. A-Soon, fearing Guan-Sik giving up his
00:12:34athletic potential for her, threw the ring into the field and rejected him with her actions. Guan-Sik
00:12:39asked if he was blocking her life, a question his mother had also asked in private. This time A-Soon
00:12:44affirmed it and convinced him to leave. Afterward, she searched the field for the ring but never found
00:12:49it. They parted ways and Guan-Sik pursued his athletic career, participating in competitions.
00:12:54On the day he left by boat, A-Soon was at a shop, ordering clothes, a man accompanying
00:13:00her insulted Guan-Sik for being rude. That night A-Soon defended Guan-Sik, which angered
00:13:06the man. He reminded her that her university funding would depend on her efforts. A-Soon
00:13:12blurted out that she didn't want his money. Confused, the man asked why she would marry
00:13:17him if she didn't want money. A-Soon's simple answer was that she had no home and no other
00:13:22choice. As she spoke, her thoughts were filled with Guan-Sik. A-Soon suggested to the man that
00:13:28he hire her as a nanny. The man was speechless, he felt that his wife would naturally take care
00:13:34of the household chores and saw no need to waste money. His plan was simple find a filial daughter
00:13:39in law for his mother and a thrifty diligent mother for his two children. A-Soon, driven by a
00:13:44sudden impulse while staring at a wall clock, ran towards the direction Guan-Sik had left.
00:13:49By the time she reached the dock, the ship had already sailed. She ran and called out Guan-Sik's
00:13:54name. Guan-Sik heard A-Soon's shouts and begged the captain to turn back. However, the captain would
00:14:00not change course just for one passenger. Without A-Soon, Guan-Sik felt he couldn't go on. The only
00:14:07way he could think of to return to her was to jump into the sea. Guan-Sik swam towards A-Soon at full
00:14:13speed, Guan-Sik's mother and grandmother watched. Regretting ever letting him learn to swim,
00:14:19the couple embraced tightly. Finally able to be together for life, nothing could separate them
00:14:24now. Eight months after their marriage, they welcomed a daughter conceived during their
00:14:29elopement to Busan. With their daughter, the couple felt they owned the world. A-Soon no longer thought
00:14:34about attending university and Guan-Sik never regretted giving up his athletic career and the
00:14:38chance to win a gold medal. A-Soon had a loving husband, but life with her in-laws was difficult.
00:14:44Her mother-in-law wanted a grandson and demanded A-Soon bow 3,000 times before a
00:14:48Buddhist statue to show sincerity. On the way back, her grandmother threw red beans at her.
00:14:54Fearing the soul of A-Soon's mother might cling to her. In her spare time, A-Soon visited her
00:15:00stepfather's house to see her siblings. Maintaining a good relationship with his new wife,
00:15:05she often complained about her mother-in-law in front of the new wife and helped with her
00:15:09children's diapers. The new wife gave A-Soon a tricycle for her daughter. When the grandmother
00:15:15saw the tricycle, she demanded A-Soon throw it away. Insisting that riding was for boys,
00:15:21the mother-in-law agreed and suggested trading the tricycle for candy. That night, the grandmother
00:15:26took her great-granddaughter to sleep. Hinting that the couple should go to their room and try for a
00:15:31child. Exhausted from the day, A-Soon lay in bed, Guan-Soon, feeling sympathy for his wife,
00:15:37always wanted to help share her burdens. A-Soon asked him to keep the tricycle for their daughter,
00:15:42arguing that if she didn't stand up for this small thing, her daughter would end up busy in the
00:15:47kitchen all her life like her. A-Soon hoped her daughter could do whatever she wanted and not
00:15:52just serve her in-laws but be bold enough to overturn tables if dissatisfied. Guan-Soon encouraged A-Soon
00:15:58to do the same, overturn or smash tables and he would handle the rest. This lifted A-Soon's spirits,
00:16:05the next morning before dawn. A-Soon got up to face another day of red bean baptisms as her
00:16:10grandmother prayed for her to have a son soon, at breakfast. Guan-Soon brought good news,
00:16:15he had bought a new tricycle for their daughter, if his mother wanted to trade it for candy of equal
00:16:20value, he had no objections, successfully securing his daughter's ride to ride. In her husband's family
00:16:26there was a tradition during meals where the grandmother and the men of the house sat at the
00:16:29main table while the other women sat at a separate table, the main table's bowls often had many peas.
00:16:36Knowing his daughter liked peas, Guan-Soon sat next to A-Soon and gave her all the peas from his bowl,
00:16:42announcing he would eat at this table from now on, with Guan-Soon's affection. A-Soon didn't find life
00:16:48in her husband's family too hard and cheerfully saw him off to work every day. Soon after, A-Soon became
00:16:54pregnant again, the grandmother decided to send her great-granddaughter to become a Hino to earn
00:16:59money for the family. A-Soon loudly protested, refusing to let her daughter become a Hino,
00:17:05remembering her own mother's early death due to a respiratory illness caused by diving.
00:17:09Her mother had also warned her never to become a Hino or a servant to her in-laws.
00:17:14A-Soon was determined not to let her daughter follow in her mother's path. This defiance led the
00:17:18grandmother to slap A-Soon and throw red beans at her, ordering her to leave. Guan-Soon arrived home
00:17:24just in time to witness this scene. He emphasized that A-Soon had married him to live with him.
00:17:30Not to be mistreated by his family, he declared that from that day onward,
00:17:34they would live on their own. Guan-Soon picked up their child and left with A-Soon.
00:17:40The family of three rented a small house, living a humble but free life. However, they fell behind on
00:17:46rent. Guan-Soon asked the landlord for more time only to learn that someone named Island Virtue had paid
00:17:52three months' rent for them. The couple couldn't guess who this person was, away from the in-laws.
00:17:58A-Soon was much happier, she knew Guan-Soon was earning money through fishing but didn't know for
00:18:03which captain he worked. One day, noticing Guan-Soon's injury and that he wore long sleeves
00:18:09even in hot weather, A-Soon lifted his pant leg and saw his wounds. Wanting to help, she brought a
00:18:14gift to the captain's house only to find out the captain was the man she had previously met during
00:18:19the arranged meeting. His wife informed her that on the day Guan-Soon was injured, the captain had
00:18:24deliberately delayed their return, forcing Guan-Soon to endure the pain. The captain's wife, a kind woman,
00:18:30knew her husband had a bad temper and had advised him against mistreating his workers. But he seemed
00:18:36to harbor animosity towards Guan-Soon. A-Soon argued that wrong is wrong and others should not tolerate
00:18:42his mistakes. After leaving the gift, she went to find Guan-Soon at the dock. Where she saw the man
00:18:49hitting him, A-Soon ran over and publicly declared that Guan-Soon would no longer work for him.
00:18:55Before leaving, she kicked the man, cursing him as worse than a pig or dog. Throughout their lives,
00:19:01the couple lived in poverty, but it was their love that made them overlook everything and move forward
00:19:05together. After resigning, Guan-Soon lost his income source, spent his days disheartened,
00:19:10and soon there was no food at home. His daughter Gum-Yang faced hunger too. A-Soon, his wife, started to
00:19:17worry, she couldn't ask others for help. All she could do was cry in front of her grandmother.
00:19:23The grandmother's household was barely better off, still in debt. Disappointed, A-Soon returned home,
00:19:29unable to sleep. Lying awake on her bedding, realizing for the first time how difficult the adult world is.
00:19:36She couldn't endure hardship like her late mother did. Nor could she manage like the Hino aunt who
00:19:42despite hardships, always managed to eat and sleep on time. Just then, her grandmother's voice was
00:19:48heard outside. She had come late at night to give A-Soon a passbook with the money so Guan-Soon
00:19:52could buy a boat and become a captain, earning a substantial income. Before A-Soon's mother passed
00:19:57away, she had asked the grandmother to accompany her for a final photo and entrusted A-Soon to her.
00:20:02Knowing her daughter well, she believed A-Soon wouldn't trouble her grandmother unless absolutely
00:20:07necessary. If such a day came, she hoped the grandmother would help A-Soon for the sake of
00:20:12her late son. The grandmother reassured her daughter-in-law that she would take good care
00:20:17of A-Soon. Hearing this, A-Soon was overwhelmed with tears, vowing to live a good and peaceful life.
00:20:25With the money, Guan-Soon purchased a boat and became a real captain. During this celebratory moment,
00:20:31A-Soon's water broke. Her second child was about to be born. Guan-Soon quickly emptied the cart and
00:20:37rushed A-Soon to the hospital. After the birth of their son, A-Soon's relationship with her in-laws
00:20:43gradually improved. A-Soon, a kind and forgiving soul, had long forgotten being ousted by her in-laws.
00:20:50Guan-Soon still worried about his mother troubling A-Soon, but she reassured him, having born a son and
00:20:55made Guan-Soon a captain. Even his mother couldn't be fast enough to appreciate her. Once the in-laws
00:21:01left, Guan-Soon shared great news. With A-Soon, they finally had their own home, standing at the
00:21:07doorstep of their new house. A-Soon felt as if she was dreaming, Guan-Soon had purchased her mother's
00:21:13old house. A-Soon remembered her mother's remarriage from her childhood, and seizing any chance, would run
00:21:20from her grandmother's house through the mountain path to find her mother, who would embrace her
00:21:25warmly upon hearing her daughter's young voice. Now, Guan-Soon had contacted the landlord and bought
00:21:31the house for A-Soon. Making her dream a reality, with the house, they gradually added more furniture.
00:21:38Including a brand new mother-of-pearl wardrobe for A-Soon, the family took a family photo at the door,
00:21:43in this new home. A-Soon became pregnant with their third child, on a hot night, her mother appeared
00:21:49in A-Soon's dream, repeatedly saying the woman next door bought a truck. At first, A-Soon thought her
00:21:54mother was criticizing Guan-Soon's inadequacy compared to the neighbor. After A-Soon woke up feeling
00:22:00discomfort in her abdomen, she woke her daughter, Gum-Yang, and asked her to fetch the neighbor.
00:22:06Following her mother's advice, A-Soon rode in the neighbor's car to the hospital,
00:22:11where she gave birth to her second son, once recovered. A-Soon witnessed presidential elections in
00:22:16South Korea. At the same time, the village was electing a chairperson and vice chairperson.
00:22:22With the villagers' support, A-Soon became the vice chairperson. During this period,
00:22:27the government was cracking down on men and women who danced socially. A-Soon, part of the law
00:22:33enforcement team, searched the women's restroom at a dance training center. She found the chairperson's
00:22:38wife and daughter hiding there, known for his temper. The chairperson was alarmed when the wife,
00:22:43helped by A-Soon, through a restroom window made a noise while escaping. A-Soon covered for them,
00:22:48taking on the arrest duty and preventing others from following. The wife dropped a shoe during
00:22:53the escape, which the chairperson recognized, after successfully escaping. The wife thanked A-Soon
00:22:59and shared her struggles with her verbally abusive husband at home. Dancing had become her mental refuge,
00:23:05secretly practiced in her spare time. In contrast, A-Soon appeared elegant and confident.
00:23:11More like a noble woman, envied by the chairperson's wife. Who hoped her daughter would also marry well,
00:23:17traditionally women were not allowed on boats. Believed to bring bad luck to seafaring men,
00:23:23thus Guan-Soon always took his son on the boat while A-Soon and Gum-Yang stayed ashore.
00:23:28Ignoring the custom, Guan-Soon reached out to them, as wary of the superstition, held back Gum-Yang,
00:23:34who was eager to board. A-Soon didn't want her daughter influenced by such beliefs and bravely
00:23:38stepped onto the boat herself, breaking the superstition by example. As the children grew,
00:23:44one day A-Soon's young son knocked over a candy jar, while she was busy picking up the candies,
00:23:49ignoring her crying son. A typhoon was brewing outside, Gum-Yang's classmate came to find A-Soon.
00:23:56Reporting a bike accident with a motorcycle, A-Soon rushed to find her daughter. Entrusting her
00:24:02neighbor, who was half asleep and didn't catch her instructions with the boys. When A-Soon returned,
00:24:08both sons were missing. A Hino aunt found the older son on the breakwater and brought him home.
00:24:14The younger son, following his brother, got lost, despite the storm. Villagers searched and
00:24:20eventually another Hino aunt brought back the young boy's body. Overwhelmed by grief, A-Soon held her
00:24:26son's cold body in the storm, insisting on taking him to the hospital. The tragedy shattered the once-happy
00:24:32family. A-Soon regret not embracing her son instead of scolding him earlier, after their loss. A-Soon
00:24:38and Guan-Sick often lay idle, reminiscing about their young son and neglecting the feelings of
00:24:43their surviving son and daughter. Their eldest son dared not speak to A-Soon, thinking, she blamed him,
00:24:49in fact, he blamed himself for not staying home to look after his brother. Which he believed led to
00:24:55the accident, Guan-Sick, noticing Gum-Yang's perfect test score and a tuition fee reminder. Asked about her
00:25:02situation, Gum-Yang broke down, regretting her bicycle ride that day. Believing it led to her
00:25:08brother's death, at that moment. The couple realized their neglect and embraced their beloved children.
00:25:14Unseen by them, both children were living with deep guilt. Realizing they had to change,
00:25:19Guan-Sick began eating properly and returned to work to earn money. His first priority was to pay Gum-Yang's
00:25:26tuition fees. A-Soon continued to sell seafood at the beach to make a living. Though they had to keep
00:25:31dealing with the sea, A-Soon resented it for taking both her mother and son. She vowed never to deal
00:25:36with the sea again and often cried at the thought. Guan-Sick, as the strong one, upheld the family,
00:25:41understanding that as parents they needed to live well and not let their children live in guilt.
00:25:46A-Soon confessed to her husband that their young son's body was found on the dike.
00:25:50A place she often took the children to wait for Guan-Sick's return from sea. The children remembered
00:25:57that spot, which was particularly dangerous during typhoon season. Guan-Sick comforted his wife,
00:26:03never blaming her, he blamed himself. Tormented for decades, thinking if he had not gone to build a
00:26:09seawall on the day of the typhoon. He might not have lost his son, filing the death report. Each entry
00:26:16reminded him of his loss, causing him to sit on the floor and weep, with his rough hands supporting
00:26:21him. A-Soon noticed the kitchen full of food from neighbors. The mysterious person who paid her rent
00:26:26turned out to be her stepfather's new wife, who helped A-Soon before moving away. A-Soon felt
00:26:31fortunate, despite not yet being a strong adult. Grateful for the kind people who helped her grow
00:26:36into a grateful woman, in a loving environment. Gum-Yang grew up and was admitted to Seoul National
00:26:42University, on her first day, she met her future boyfriend. Meanwhile, A-Soon found local fishermen
00:26:48arguing with officials. With the Seoul Olympics approaching, the government was clearing Jiju
00:26:54Island's roadside stalls. Refusing to leave, the fishermen called for Vice President A-Soon.
00:27:01Without a word, she lay in front of the demolition team's vehicle. Daring the bulldozer to run over her,
00:27:07forcing the team to leave. After this incident, everyone supported A-Soon in the upcoming
00:27:12Fishermen's Association election to run for President. Guan-Sik also campaigned for his wife,
00:27:17bringing snacks to the fishermen he knew to secure votes for her. Friends joked that once A-Soon was
00:27:22elected, he would become the husband of the lady president. Teasing that a man must maintain his
00:27:27dignity, Guan-Sik was unperturbed. He had always dreamed of being the first first gentleman,
00:27:32while A-Soon aspired to be the first female president. The current president was trying
00:27:37to secure votes by treating the fishermen to high-quality black pork and disparaging A-Soon's
00:27:42family during the feast. Mocking her second son as a fool, meanwhile, A-Soon dressed up and went to
00:27:48attend a meeting celebrating her son's promotion to group leader at school. Unexpectedly, she was
00:27:54called to the playground and scolded by a teacher. It turned out that Eun-Yong had caused trouble at
00:27:59school by removing and selling the English-led car badges from teachers' cars, believing that
00:28:05possessing a university's initials could secure admission. Furthermore, Eun-Yong was conducting
00:28:10other business at school, acting like a little merchant. A-Soon was so upset and lectured her son,
00:28:16wishing he was even half as good as Gum-Yang. Returning from school, A-Soon went to help at a
00:28:21local restaurant, where the president was again hosting a lavish dinner to garner votes,
00:28:25continually belittling A-Soon, fearing she might take his position. The Hino women advised A-Soon
00:28:31to fight back and find a way to expose the president's vulnerabilities. At the banquet,
00:28:36the drunken president met with a female agent in a private room. The agent wanted to evict the
00:28:41street vendors to allow the Olympic torch relay to pass through the village and increase property
00:28:46values. From which she hoped to profit, the president agreed to help her for a 30% cut of the
00:28:52profits. He then made inappropriate advances towards her, at that moment. A-Soon burst into
00:28:58the room and stopped them, she then exposed the scene to the fishermen. As expected, A-Soon was
00:29:04elected president of the Fishermen's Association, she hosted a celebration feast for the fish,
00:29:09where she sang and danced joyously while drunk. Eun-Yong urged his father to stop his mother from
00:29:14making a spectacle of herself in front of everyone, however, Guan-Sik happily watched his wife,
00:29:19knowing it was the happiest day for A-Soon, who had spent 30 years achieving her dream,
00:29:24evolving from deputy leader to president. She wished she could share this moment with her
00:29:28mother and hold her hand again. Despite her tough childhood, meanwhile, today a driver came to pick
00:29:34up Gum-Yong for a tutoring session at a wealthy family's home. Gum-Yong left without greeting her
00:29:40boyfriend who had come to the school to see her. Worried about being late, at the tutoring session,
00:29:45the girl didn't even know the simplest English words. Was only interested in fashion, and her
00:29:51parents were rarely home. Only the nanny was there, who cooked delicious food for Gum-Yong and took
00:29:57special care of her. Today, surprisingly, the lady of the house requested to see Gum-Yong.
00:30:03Waiting for her arrival, the lady suddenly produced an exam admission card with Gum-Yong's photo on it,
00:30:08it turned out she had not hired Gum-Yong as a tutor to improve academic performance but to have her
00:30:13take the exam in her place. If Gum-Yong could get into one of the top three universities,
00:30:18the lady promised to give her an apartment in Seoul. She assured Gum-Yong that the examiners
00:30:23had been bribed and all she needed to do was to take the exam as a proxy. To persuade Gum-Yong,
00:30:29the lady had researched her family background. Appealing to her to consider her parents who were
00:30:34working hard to afford her education. Gum-Yong, remembering her parents who had taught her to be
00:30:40honest. Refused the offer, angered, the lady falsely accused Gum-Yong of stealing a valuable
00:30:46diamond ring and called the police. At the police station, the police searched Gum-Yong's backpack
00:30:52but found no ring. Still they did not believe her and intended to search her physically. A maid,
00:30:58unable to stand by, took the supposedly stolen ring from the bedroom and threw it under a table,
00:31:03pretending it was found there. She then convinced the lady to call the police to admit the misunderstanding.
00:31:07The lady, thinking the maid was foolish for scolding her, saw her opening a window to throw the ring
00:31:13out. Desperate, she rushed to stop her and agreed to call the police. The lady was puzzled why the maid
00:31:19would risk her job to defend a stranger. The maid revealed that she was a former guest saved by Guan
00:31:25Sik and A-Soon years ago after they had alerted her to potential theft of her luggage. She remembered
00:31:31A-Soon's kindness, simply motivated by the belief that no one should suffer theft.
00:31:35Twenty years later, recognizing Gum-Yong who resembled her young mother.
00:31:41The maid repaid A-Soon's kindness, after leaving the police station. Gum-Yong missed her mother and
00:31:47called her, but broke down in tears. Unable to speak upon hearing her mother's worried voice,
00:31:53A-Soon told Gum-Yong that Guan Sik was invited by the mayor to visit a museum in Seoul and might visit
00:31:58her if possible. Hurrying back to school, Gum-Yong arrived at the station just in time to see her
00:32:04father sitting on a bench, overwhelmed. She tried not to worry him and joined him for noodles. She
00:32:09couldn't help but complain about not receiving a scholarship as first place and being asked to
00:32:13vacate her dorm. She knew her achievements were burdening her parents. And despite her selfish desire
00:32:19for more, it only increased her guilt and self-blame. Guan Sik, understanding her sacrifices
00:32:26for the family situation, offered her some squid he had picked out, reassuring her to pursue her
00:32:31desires as he would fully support her. As he left, Guan Sik told his daughter not to worry about rent.
00:32:38He would work hard fishing. Gum-Yong, however, was fixated on the independence hall badge on her
00:32:44father's wrist. Realizing her politically unaware father didn't understand the mayor's intent in
00:32:49showing him the memorial, it was an opportunity to see his daughter, with tearful eyes. Gum-Yong
00:32:54watched her father walk away from the car and couldn't help but wave back. Guan Sik waved vigorously,
00:33:00just as he did when leaving for fishing trips during her childhood. Gum-Yong said goodbye to her
00:33:04boyfriend who was returning to military service after his leave. They embraced reluctantly, he asked her to
00:33:10wait for him, for two more years, promising to marry her once he was discharged. The latest literary
00:33:16poetry contest began, and A-Soon set up a stall at the event. Remembering her own high school poetry
00:33:22competition, the Hino aunt praised A-Soon's talent and suggested she participate. A-Soon joked that it was
00:33:29a high school competition and she shouldn't intrude. A-Soon ran into a high school classmate and felt nervous.
00:33:35Not because of the reunion, but because she couldn't bear to look at the son who was about the age her
00:33:41younger son would have been. Guan Sik felt similarly, calculating that if their son were alive, he would be
00:33:4715, and he would give snacks to children of the same age. Meanwhile, a female professor wanted to support
00:33:53Gum-Yong, from a poor family, to study in Japan. Gum-Yong was thrilled and immediately shared the news with
00:33:59her mother, when A-Soon asked about it. Gum-Yong responded that regardless of whether she told her mother,
00:34:04they couldn't afford it just by running a stall, this led to an argument between them.
00:34:09Afterward, A-Soon confessed to Guan-Sik her guilt over not providing better living conditions for
00:34:14their daughter. Guan-Sik felt useless, regretting that his wife and daughter had to endure hardship
00:34:20with him. Soon the family was moving to the city. A-Soon placed Candy and the new house address on the
00:34:26window sill to guide her son's spirit to their new home. On the same day they moved, Gum-Yong boarded an
00:34:32international flight, tears falling as she clutched tightly wrapped Japanese yen. Her parents had done
00:34:38everything possible to give her the best. Initially, A-Soon's mother had hoped her daughter
00:34:42wouldn't live a life like a maid's. Remembering her mother's advice, A-Soon wanted her daughter to
00:34:47live freely and did her utmost to support Gum-Yong's dreams. A-Soon sold her house and moved into a small
00:34:53apartment, Guan-Sik blamed, himself for being too poor and making A-Soon live in such a rundown house.
00:35:00Upset, he immediately wallpapered the bedroom with floral patterns and enthusiastically asked his wife
00:35:05if she wanted new curtains. A-Soon guessed Guan-Sik's thoughts and told him smilingly that she didn't care
00:35:11where she lived. As long as she was with Guan-Sik, that was her home. The couple smiled at each other and
00:35:18started decorating their new home together. Initially, A-Soon planned to open a fish store
00:35:24with three Hino aunts by pooling money together, but she gave all her money to her daughter and now
00:35:28had to set up a stall outside the fish store temporarily. On the opening day of the fish
00:35:32store, they took a picture and sent it to Gum-Yong, seeing her mother's lonely stall next to the fish
00:35:37store. Gum-Yong couldn't help crying and swore never to steal her parents' dreams again. A year later,
00:35:43after her study tour, Gum-Yong, returned to Korea and rented a rundown room in a remote mountain area
00:35:49in Seoul to save money. The landlord was difficult and refused to install a lock on Gum-Yong's door.
00:35:56After several requests were denied, Gum-Yong reluctantly blocked the door with a wardrobe.
00:36:02Unexpectedly, just after she blocked the door, she heard the landlord knocking madly.
00:36:07Then a man with glasses pushed the wardrobe aside, asking for her help. It turned out he was the
00:36:13landlord's daughter's boyfriend. They were dating secretly at home and got trapped when the landlord
00:36:18arrived. Gum-Yong had already hidden the man with glasses in the wardrobe. The landlord's daughter
00:36:23tried to distract her father but inadvertently drew his attention to the wardrobe, where he caught the
00:36:28man. Meanwhile, A-Soon and the landlord shared the same anger. Today, A-Soon heard whispers coming
00:36:34from her son's room and went in under the pretense of bringing juice. Hearing noises from the wardrobe,
00:36:39she, quickly called Guan-Sik to open it and found her son's girlfriend. A-Soon didn't blame them but
00:36:45inquired about the girlfriend's family. Shocked to learn she was the daughter of a man previously
00:36:50connected for an arranged marriage. She was speechless, that evening, she took her son to visit the girl's
00:36:56family. Leaving the arranged marriage man smoking in the stairwell. Upset, Gum-Yong continued her studies
00:37:04in Seoul and looked for a part-time job. On the bulletin board she happened to meet Park Chang-Go,
00:37:09who was posting a movie poster, seeing her looking for a job. He introduced her to a ticket-selling
00:37:14job at a cinema, on her first day. The cinema owner complained to Gum-Yong about Park Chang-Go,
00:37:19describing him as an obscure painter who depicted erotic movie covers as landscapes, never talking
00:37:24back despite the scolding, but never changing his style either. Gum-Yong was just about to ask more
00:37:30about Park Chang-Go when a customer came to buy a ticket and invited her to a movie, seeing the ring
00:37:35he tossed. She excitedly asked the owner to cover for her and ran backstage to meet her boyfriend.
00:37:41They embraced sweetly, a scene Park Chang-Go saw from the projection room. Feeling inexplicably
00:37:48jealous, he started playing the news to interrupt the couple's intimate moment. That evening, Gum-Yong's
00:37:54boyfriend walked her home, seeing the dilapidated and dangerous neighborhood she lived in.
00:37:59He was very worried. Just then, Park Chang-Go happened to pass by. The boyfriend quickly
00:38:05shielded Gum-Yong. She reassured him not to worry, explaining that Park was a co-worker from the
00:38:10cinema and that she was fine living there. However, her boyfriend insisted strongly that she move to
00:38:14his apartment in a wealthier area. Feeling her pride trampled, Gum-Yong angrily walked away.
00:38:20That day, the boss sent Gum-Yong to deliver dumplings to Park Chang-Go, who was painting in the
00:38:25basement. Arriving in the basement, she was impressed by the paintings. Suddenly, a noisy
00:38:30argument erupted. Gum-Yong quickly hid, overhearing the landlord's daughter mocking Park Chang-Go for
00:38:36being too poor to take her out to a Western restaurant. Park Chang-Go accused his girlfriend
00:38:42of disrespecting their relationship by going on six blind dates since they started dating.
00:38:46Just then a phone rang. The landlord's daughter answered it and spotted Gum-Yong hiding. Gum-Yong
00:38:53explained she was just passing by, but the landlord's daughter was skeptical. Especially
00:38:59upon learning that Gum-Yong's job was introduced by Park Chang-Go, she accused them of having an
00:39:04affair. Park intervened, asking his girlfriend to speak more respectfully. She was left speechless
00:39:09by anger. A few days later, on her boyfriend's birthday, Gum-Yong brought seaweed to his apartment
00:39:15and unexpectedly met his mother. The mother disapproved of Gum-Yong's inability to even
00:39:19serve seaweed soup properly, even touching the seaweed with her hands at the dinner table.
00:39:24Trying to please her boyfriend's mother, Gum-Yong ate a lot and praised her cooking.
00:39:29Only to be told the food was store-bought and criticized for her large appetite.
00:39:34Moreover, the mother warned Gum-Yong that the apartment was bought for her son and was her property.
00:39:40Hence she did not want Gum-Yong visiting again, after dinner. Gum-Yong cried in the rain,
00:39:46feeling like a cheap clown in front of her boyfriend's mother. She asked her boyfriend
00:39:51to choose between being a good son or a good husband. Then left crying, Gum-Yong took a break
00:39:57from her relationship to focus on work, she noticed an aunt who came to the cinema entrance whenever a
00:40:01new movie was released. Telling everyone that the movie posters were works of art, Gum-Yong guessed
00:40:06her identity and took her to the cinema, giving her a movie ticket claimed as a staff benefit.
00:40:11Park Chang-Go's mother thanked Gum-Yong and praised her son's painting skills. The kind-hearted boss
00:40:16handed the aunt a stack of tickets, saying the cinema would be doomed without Park Chang-Go,
00:40:21his mother, very happy. Went into the theater, it was her first time watching a movie. And she was
00:40:28emotionally caught up in the story, Park Chang-Go. Watching his mother engrossed in the film from the
00:40:34projection room. Sincerely thanked Gum-Yong, she suggested he paint her a painting. Joking that she
00:40:40could sell it for a lot of money when he became famous. They laughed and joked as the movie quickly
00:40:46came to an end. And then they walked his mother back to the store, on the way home. Park Chang-Go's
00:40:52mother excitedly discussed the movie plot with her son. Afterwards she thanked the warm-hearted Gum-Yong,
00:40:58praising her as a good daughter. She would never forget this day, at their family copy shop.
00:41:02She gave Gum-Yong many English books left by customers and asked her son to walk Gum-Yong home.
00:41:08Park Chang-Go treated Gum-Yong to noodles as a token of appreciation. Gum-Yong took the opportunity to ask
00:41:14him to clarify their relationship to the landlord's daughter. But Park Chang-Go said it wasn't necessary,
00:41:19as his girlfriend knew nothing serious was going on between them. He was just trying to alleviate
00:41:25his guilt for marrying someone else for money. Gum-Yong quickly comforted the heartbroken Park
00:41:31Chang-Go. That evening, A-Soon went to her uncle's house to prepare offerings for the next day.
00:41:37The anniversary of her father's death, the family reminisced about a dangerous incident involving
00:41:41A-Soon on a day of ancestral worship 30 years ago. A-Soon was chopping wood with her cousin when she
00:41:48spotted a black dragonfly, which she associated with a death omen. She tried to catch it to prevent it
00:41:54from taking other dying dragonflies, chasing it to a bus stop. A disabled woman asked A-Soon to get
00:42:00change for her to ride the bus. A-Soon obediently got the change and received a coin as a reward.
00:42:05The woman then asked A-Soon to go to an alley to exchange more money. But as A-Soon approached a man,
00:42:10her mother intervened, realizing a human trafficker was trying to abduct her daughter.
00:42:15A-Soon's mother had rushed over the mountain, feeling a sudden unease after learning her
00:42:20daughter was chasing a dragonfly. After confirming the disabled woman had a scar on her wrist,
00:42:26A-Soon's mother became suspicious, knowing the woman had seen A-Soon's face and wouldn't let her go.
00:42:32In the days that followed, whenever a female customer came to buy seafood, she would check
00:42:37their wrists, scaring many customers away but eventually catching the woman and her accomplice.
00:42:42The villagers, learning they were traffickers, beat them up. Recently, A-Soon has been having
00:42:49recurring nightmares, waking up feeling anxious about her daughter's safety. She's been calling
00:42:53Gumyang every night, urging her to come home early and not stay out overnight. However, Gumyang is
00:42:59frustrated with her mother's nagging. A-Soon, upset, hangs up and complains to Guan-Sik that although
00:43:05their daughter has grown up, in her heart she remains the little girl she worries about constantly.
00:43:10At night, A-Soon dreams again about the day her son died because she went to attend to Gumyang who had
00:43:15fallen off her bike and wasn't watching her son. Leading to his accidental death, waking up anxious.
00:43:22A-Soon goes to find Gumyang and discovers her unconscious from carbon monoxide poisoning.
00:43:27Pale and unresponsive, holding her daughter, crying as she did when her son died. A-Soon frantically
00:43:34rushes to call an ambulance, by chance. Park Chang-go is also at the landlord's place.
00:43:39He immediately carries Gumyang down the mountain to get help.
00:43:43Because A-Soon was overly worried, she repeatedly saved Gumyang throughout her childhood,
00:43:48when Gumyang was sent to the hospital. Her boyfriend rushed there immediately.
00:43:52A-Soon remembered this young man. She eavesdropped on the young couple's conversation and heard the
00:43:57boyfriend had given Gumyang a ring. Hoping she would move out of her shabby house after marriage,
00:44:02he couldn't imagine life without her and tearfully reiterated his marriage proposal.
00:44:06Promising to persuade his mother while asking Gumyang to try to make his mother like her more.
00:44:12Unable to listen any longer, A-Soon confronted the boyfriend. Asking why his mother looked down
00:44:18on her precious daughter. The boyfriend remained silent, A-Soon retorted that she didn't think highly
00:44:23of him either. Two years passed and Gumyang's brother went to serve in the military. At the same time,
00:44:3028-year-old Park Chang-go also enlisted without prior notice. Leaving Gumyang feeling lost,
00:44:37she noticed a painting leaning against the wall covered by a scarf. It was a portrait of her
00:44:41painted by Park Chang-go. After two years of effort by the boyfriend, both sets of parents finally met
00:44:46to discuss the wedding. A-Soon and her husband arrived at the restaurant early and waited an hour
00:44:51for the groom's family. As they entered, Gumyang stood up to greet them, asking if they felt car sick.
00:44:56The boyfriend's mother didn't apologize, instead, A-Soon kept saying it was okay.
00:45:02The boyfriend's father reached out to Guan-sik, who held his hand tightly. Not wanting to show his
00:45:08rough hands from labor, while the elders talked. Gumyang served soup to everyone, only to find a
00:45:14little left for her own bowl. Seeing this, A-Soon felt sad, realizing that she always ended up serving
00:45:21at her in-laws. Thinking this, A-Soon exchanged her soup with her daughters. Feeling she hadn't
00:45:28set a good example, the boyfriend's mother continued to dominate the conversation, criticizing Gumyang for
00:45:33her lack of domestic skills and suggesting she quit her job after marriage to take care of the family.
00:45:38The boyfriend's father unapologetically handed Gumyang a bowl to serve more soup. Guan-sik looked at the
00:45:44boyfriend, knowing that a man should protect the woman he loves. This is why A-Soon never felt bitter at
00:45:49her in-laws. She clearly remembered Guan-sik being the first family head to sit and eat with the women.
00:45:55Guan-sik always showed through his actions that he would be a steadfast partner for his wife.
00:46:01The boyfriend stood up to help, A-Soon took the spoon from him. Not wanting the in-laws to think her
00:46:07daughter was incompetent. She stated it wasn't that Gumyang couldn't do these tasks. It's just that she
00:46:13never taught her to perform tasks meant for servants. The meal was tense with the in-laws only caring
00:46:19whether Gumyang could cook soybean paste soup and other dishes. They had sent Gumyang to university
00:46:25not to learn how to serve her in-laws. The more A-Soon thought about it the angrier she became.
00:46:30Guan-sik also didn't support the marriage. Days later the families met to choose fabric for
00:46:34traditional Korean clothes. A-Soon liked pink but the in-laws decided without her and chose a fabric
00:46:40that looked like red bean soup. After making their selections, the three of them agreed to have
00:46:44dinner with Gumyang's boyfriend. While Gumyang was picking up her boyfriend, her future mother-in-law
00:46:50spoke frankly. Expressing her wish for A-Soon to stop the wedding. She described her son as her
00:46:56life's finest creation and could not accept him marrying Gumyang. She compared A-Soon's poor family
00:47:03to trees growing in the shade which could never match the trees thriving in the sunlight of wealth.
00:47:08During the meal A-Soon was unhappy, unaware of the conversation. Gumyang scolded her mother for
00:47:14being unfriendly, leading to an argument between them. Gumyang saw A-Soon's compromise and thought
00:47:20her mother felt unworthy of the boyfriend. Hence trying to please the in-laws at all costs.
00:47:26A-Soon explained that she was merely trying to prevent future mistreatment of her daughter by
00:47:30the in-laws. A-Soon advised Gumyang to consider carefully, reminding her that she was a precious
00:47:36child to her parents and that they would be heartbroken to see her suffer. At that time Gumyang
00:47:40was determined to stay with her boyfriend and had no plans to break up. Boyfriend's mother,
00:47:45unable to sit idly by, confronted Gumyang. Thinking A-Soon would persuade her daughter,
00:47:51discovering Gumyang still intended to marry. She realized that A-Soon too had been silently
00:47:57enduring hardships. Gumyang decided she could no longer tolerate it, she told the elder that her
00:48:02past silence was not out of weakness but to spare her boyfriend embarrassment.
00:48:06She pointed out that while she could consider her boyfriend's feelings, his mother treated her
00:48:12child's life as her property to be trampled at will, after this argument, Gumyang firmly decided
00:48:17to break up. The couple who had been together for seven years took a year to completely end their
00:48:22relationship, on the night they severed ties. Gumyang spoke her truth, saying she had always loved
00:48:28her boyfriend deeply but love did not mean sacrificing her. She lamented how she had compromised for
00:48:33him, her boyfriend was willing to set boundaries with his parents but Gumyang shook her head,
00:48:38believing that if love required such sacrifices, it would only lead to mutual resentment, she did not
00:48:44want her boyfriend to end up resenting her. With Gumyang's insistence, the former lovers ended their
00:48:50relationship with a hug. Knowing about their daughter's breakup, A-Soon and her husband were somewhat
00:48:56worried, sighing heavily at the dinner table with somber expressions. The next moment, Gumyang's voice came
00:49:03from the entrance. She had returned home, instantly her parents' faces lit up with smiles. A-Soon rushed to the
00:49:10kitchen to prepare food, while Guan-Sik brought a heater for their daughter to warm up, watching her parents
00:49:15busy themselves. Gumyang imagined how quiet the house must have been before she entered, in stark contrast to the
00:49:22current lively scene. A-Soon prepared a table full of food, varying the dishes daily to feed Gumyang. Unsure how to soothe
00:49:29their daughter's emotions, her parents could only think of making sure she was well-fed and energized
00:49:34to face the new day, one day before dawn. Guan-Sik took his daughter Gumyang out to sea to watch the
00:49:41sunrise. Gumyang could hardly imagine how her father managed to go out to sea every day before dawn. As waking
00:49:48up early was a torture for her, Guan-Sik's motivation came from his family. His early mornings ensured a
00:49:55comfortable life for them. Allowing Gumyang the luxury of sleeping in, Gumyang felt guilty for
00:50:01canceling the wedding and embarrassing her parents. But Guan-Sik actually hoped she wouldn't marry into
00:50:06that kind of family and didn't care whether she married at all. Gumyang disagreed, determined to
00:50:11marry because her parents were happy together. As they spoke the sun rose to Gumyang. Guan-Sik was the
00:50:17person that took care of the family, always making her feel warm. Speaking of the cancelled wedding,
00:50:22A-Soon had never sent out the invitations. Sensing her daughter might change her mind,
00:50:27A-Soon held her daughter's hand, comforting her that it's okay not to forget, but to pack up cherished
00:50:32memories and keep them deep in the heart to reminisce whenever desired. Gumyang looked at her mother and
00:50:38encouraged A-Soon to continue writing poetry. Her only hobby which she still pursued daily, Gumyang
00:50:45returned to Seoul. Opened her windows to let light in, changed her bedding, cleaned the fridge,
00:50:51and stored the side dishes her mother had prepared for her. After seeing off Gumyang,
00:50:56the couple returned home. Somberly moved to tears by gifts of skincare products.
00:51:01A-Soon's sister-in-law came to sell her products. Her car was filled with various items, being family.
00:51:07A-Soon bought two mattresses, asking her sister-in-law to deliver one to her mother-in-law.
00:51:12The sister-in-law felt awkward, as she, being the biological daughter, only remembered her mother when
00:51:17she needed help. Unlike A-Soon who frequently cared for the elderly, A-Soon gave the other mattress to
00:51:23her grandmother on her birthday. Grandmother was somewhat senile, not recognizing family members
00:51:28and only knowing A-Soon as her granddaughter. A-Soon, grateful for her grandmother's kindness,
00:51:34planned to take her for dentures in the spring. Her grandmother remembered that A-Soon had also lost
00:51:39a son. A feeling she understood well, at home the couple tacitly never mentioned their deceased
00:51:45young son. In that moment A-Soon cried on her grandmother's lap. At night the grandmother slept
00:51:51on the mattress A-Soon bought, commenting that A-Soon was a filial child. In the past she had never
00:51:56given A-Soon much, even as little as a small yellow fish, but now her granddaughter was repaying with
00:52:01kindness and even wanted to take her to live with her, making the grandmother feel her life was
00:52:06nearing its end. Scenes from her life flashed before her eyes, sometimes life was hard, almost
00:52:11suffocating, but overall having her children by her side made it a happy life, after their grandmother
00:52:17passed away. A-Soon and her husband went to pay their respects. As they grew older, dealing with
00:52:23farewells became a part of life. A-Soon was somewhat afraid of being separated from Guan sick and they
00:52:29promised each other to face death together. On this day, the couple welcomed their son home from the
00:52:34military. His return was accompanied by his girlfriend, not only had they reconciled. But
00:52:41she was also pregnant with a new life. A-Soon was initially unable to accept this, and Guan sick even
00:52:47considered giving his son a stern talking to. Park Chang-go also returned from the military. As soon as
00:52:52he got off the bus he saw A-Soon sitting in the car. He ran after the bus, blending in with a group of
00:52:58fans chasing after a celebrity. He loudly called out for Gum Yang. It seemed like Gum Yang heard someone
00:53:04calling her name. Spring was about to arrive for Gum Yang. In 1997 in South Korea, a financial crisis
00:53:10hit, big and small companies went bankrupt. And the unemployment rate soared. Gum Yang was also
00:53:17struggling between finding a job and getting laid off. The movie theater where Gum Yang used to work
00:53:23didn't escape the hard times either. She was on the bus when she saw the announcement that the theater
00:53:28would close in December. And she suddenly felt like going to see one last movie there. Park Chang-go also
00:53:34came. He entered the theater after the movie had started and sat a few rows behind Gum Yang. The two
00:53:40of them didn't notice each other. When the movie ended, the owner asked Park Chang-go if he had seen
00:53:44Gum Yang. He made Gum Yang come to the movie and intentionally arranged for them to sit close to each
00:53:49other. Park Chang-go realized he had missed. Something he chased after Gum Yang out of the theater and saw her
00:53:55get on a bus. He ran as fast as he could, took a shortcut, and finally caught up with the bus
00:54:01carrying Gum Yang. The bus was very crowded. Park Chang-go stood at the front of the bus,
00:54:06always watching Gum Yang who was dozing off and gradually moving closer to him as passengers
00:54:11gradually got off the bus. Park Chang-go sat down in the seat in front of Gum Yang, waiting for her to
00:54:17wake up after not seeing each other for years. The two of them went to a small diner to catch up.
00:54:22Park Chang-go got straight to the point, admitting that he had been going to the movie theater every
00:54:27day hoping to run into Gum Yang again after they broke up. He always thought about Gum Yang after
00:54:32drinking a few bottles of alcohol. Yang was a little tipsy and accidentally dropped a bottle on the
00:54:37ground. Park Chang-go immediately bent down to pick up the broken pieces, worried that Gum Yang would
00:54:42get hurt, and then checked Gum Yang's hands to see if she was okay. Seeing the guy in front of her
00:54:48caring for her like a father, Gum Yang agreed to go out with him. After dating for a while,
00:54:53when it was time to think about marriage, Gum Yang took her boyfriend home to meet her father.
00:54:58Guan Six future son-in-law went to the sea, but unexpectedly Park Chang-go got terribly seasick.
00:55:04He fell to the ground, vomiting, feeling weak, and having a hard time standing up.
00:55:08Guan Six didn't like that Park Chang-go was weak like a chicken, and his face clearly showed his
00:55:14disdain, meeting the future father-in-law. Drinking alcohol was also part of the test.
00:55:19After spending a day together, Guan Six felt like he understood. Park Chang-go was clumsy,
00:55:24didn't know how to say nice things, got seasick, and also had a low alcohol tolerance.
00:55:29Park Chang-go's face was already flushed red and he was a little unsteady on his feet.
00:55:33Even so, his eyes were always on Gum Yang. When he saw Gum Yang go to the restroom,
00:55:39he worried that it was cold and dark outside and that Gum Yang would fall or get hurt.
00:55:43Today on The Boat, Guan Six also noticed that Park Chang-go always followed closely behind Gum Yang,
00:55:49protecting her, making sure she was always within his sight. Park Chang-go put his jacket around Gum Yang,
00:55:56pulling her away from the broken bottles lying on the ground. Gum Yang took the opportunity to
00:56:01remind Park Chang-go that he needed to be more relaxed and try to win her father over.
00:56:05If Guan Six didn't approve, she wouldn't marry Park Chang-go. Hearing this, Park Chang-go became
00:56:11determined. As soon as he walked into the house he flashed a bright smile and acted cute with Guan
00:56:16Six. Asking to peel shrimp for him, A-sun who was inside saw everything. She realized that Park Chang-go
00:56:22really loved her daughter. Both she and her husband agreed to let their daughter marry him. But most
00:56:27importantly, Park Chang-go's mother also prepared gifts for the two of them and wrote on the card that
00:56:32she really liked Gum Yang. That one sentence was enough to make A-sun happy all night. Her daughter is
00:56:37beautiful and has a good personality. How? Could any older person not like Gum Yang, with the approval
00:56:42of both families? Gum Yang held her wedding soon after. She held Guan Six's hand as she walked down
00:56:48the aisle. From childhood the sentence Guan Six said to his daughter the most was no matter what happens.
00:56:54Don't try to endure it alone, just come find your dad. In this situation that sentence became the
00:56:59catalyst for tears. When Gum Yang was little her dad would often feed her and tell her that if it wasn't
00:57:05good she could spit it out at any time. When Gum Yang reached school age, Guan Six told his daughter
00:57:10that if she didn't like school she could just come home. The same was true when running. Guan Six told
00:57:15his daughter not to try too hard but just to run back to him. Gum Yang grew up with these words filled
00:57:20with a sense of security. Knowing that her dad would be a strong support for her, thinking about this,
00:57:26Gum Yang cried uncontrollably, ending the wedding in tears. However at the same time as embracing
00:57:31happiness, Gum Yang's younger brother encountered a disaster. Getting caught up in legal trouble,
00:57:36her brother single-mindedly wanted to make a lot of money. He was deceived by an acquaintance and
00:57:41became a fall guy for them. Facing the blame from his parents, the son unloaded all of his
00:57:46dissatisfaction from childhood. His parents loved Gum Yang more, they gave her everything good and often
00:57:51praised her, saying my daughter is so good, compared to his sister. The son never received the same
00:57:57treatment, over time the son felt unfairness in his heart. He wanted so badly to make something
00:58:02of himself and prove that he was better than Gum Yang. Which is why he was deceived by others and
00:58:07became a fall guy. This was a problem that A soon had worried about, when she was young she couldn't
00:58:12be a perfect mother who took care of everything and sometimes she was careless. She was afraid that
00:58:17she might inadvertently cause harm to her children, but this time it wasn't like there was no way to
00:58:22save her son. As long as they paid back all the money that the people who were cheated had lost,
00:58:27her son would be released. As for A soon, she went to the mother of the acquaintance who had harmed her
00:58:32son. Wanting to find out his whereabouts, that mother deliberately hid information so A soon got angry,
00:58:38grabbed her hair and sat on her to beat her up. The people she was with had never seen A soon so
00:58:43feisty and were all surprised and white-eyed. After making a scene, A soon took the newly purchased
00:58:48electrical appliances from her shop and even the ring on her hand as compensation for her family.
00:58:53And Guan Sik went everywhere borrowing money, having to humble himself and beg others for his children
00:58:58in middle age was truly heartbreaking. Next Guan Sik sold the first boat he ever owned. The boat held
00:59:04so many memories for the whole family, but to save his son he felt that giving up anything was worth it.
00:59:09After collecting enough money, his son was released, compared to the joy of regaining his freedom.
00:59:15The feeling of guilt in his heart was even greater. Maybe parents and children are like this,
00:59:21children can easily hurt their parents and abandon them. But no matter what,
00:59:25parents always hold their children's hands tightly. A soon advised her son that Guan Sik had worked hard
00:59:30to support the family and had suffered countless injuries. Even if her son couldn't help his father
00:59:35ease the burden. He should at least not say things that would hurt his father. Losing his fishing boat,
00:59:41Guan Sik could no longer continue to earn money. A soon,
00:59:44who once dreamed of a wealthy life, began working on cleaning squid for customers at the market.
00:59:49She had to stand all day at the market. Her face flushed red from the cold. Besides her son also
00:59:54wanted to help the family reduce the burden. Every day as soon as it got dark, the son would find all
00:59:59sorts of excuses to go out. It turned out that the son was working a side job in the evening,
01:00:04because he couldn't find anything else to do. The only thing he could do was go out every night to
01:00:09sell glutinous rice cakes and buckwheat jelly. Selling for six to seven hours, the daughter-in-law
01:00:14felt bad for her husband and begged Guan Sik to temporarily support the whole family of three.
01:00:19Guan Sik didn't soften at all. As the head of the family it was right for him to endure hardship.
01:00:24Guan Sik said that. But in his heart he still cared about his son. Until one day the son left behind an
01:00:30envelope containing money and quietly left. The whole family worried that the son was thinking of
01:00:34doing something drastic. A soon received news that her son seemed to have boarded a deep sea fishing
01:00:39boat. The whole family rushed to the pier. The nightmare of losing her youngest son years ago
01:00:44came back, and A soon couldn't accept losing another beloved child. When Guan Sik arrived at
01:00:50the communication room at the pier. The boats had already set sail. He asked the captain to turn back
01:00:55and promised to pay the fuel costs. The father-in-law snatched the device from his hand and promised to
01:01:01pay double the fuel costs. The captain's eyes lit up at the sight of the money and he turned the ship
01:01:05around. Guan Sik scolded his son when he returned, asking who does such dangerous fishing work.
01:01:11It's very likely to have an accident, drown, get crushed by the equipment, or even have your hand
01:01:16cut off. Guan Sik was experienced and understood the dangers of fishing. He could take risks for the
01:01:22happiness of his family but he absolutely wouldn't allow his son to follow his path. His son cried and
01:01:27told his dad that every time he sold rice cakes, customers would tell him to treat Guan Sik
01:01:32well, so many people said. The son realized something was wrong and he finally understood
01:01:37the whole story. It turned out that Guan Sik and his father-in-law had been secretly helping him.
01:01:42The truth was exactly that, earlier Guan Sik had taken his grandson to meet the father-in-law who
01:01:47wasn't loved by his wife and children. Seeing the adorable child, the father-in-law's heart melted.
01:01:53Guan Sik advised him not to be so bossy at home all the time or he would eventually be alienated
01:01:58by everyone. The father-in-law also wanted to improve his relationship with his daughter,
01:02:03so he agreed to Guan Sik's proposal, giving money to the people in the neighborhood and inviting
01:02:07them to buy from his son. Ae Soon arrived late and as soon as she arrived she hit her son,
01:02:12she almost lost him. Ae Soon tearfully apologized to her son saying that it was all because of her
01:02:18favoritism that her son felt unfairness. After this incident the son was brought home safely.
01:02:22Guan Sik found his son a job that paid enough to live on. Gum Yang came home to visit her mother,
01:02:28when she left she rarely took so much fruit. Ae Soon noticed that her daughter seemed to be having
01:02:33financial difficulties. After she asked about it, she learned that Gum Yang had quit her job
01:02:38and started a business and had poured all her money into it. Before Ae Soon could scold her daughter,
01:02:44she saw her son bandaging his frostbitten fingers. She had reminded her son many times to wear gloves
01:02:50when handling frozen ice. Ae Soon was angry that her children didn't listen to her and kept causing
01:02:56trouble for the family. Especially Gum Yang, starting a business at her age. She should be
01:03:02having kids quickly. Her mother's words ignited Gum Yang's anger, she didn't want her children to live
01:03:07a poor life like she did, so she chose to start a business. She wasn't as lucky as her younger brother
01:03:12who had such a loving father. Gum Yang's words made Guan Sik sadly return to his room, stable his
01:03:18whole life, this time for his children he decided to go big and make a lot of money quickly. Guan Sik
01:03:23sold the family's only vegetable, garden and mortgaged for a large sum of money to buy a shop
01:03:28in a desolate place. The couple along with the fishing ladies went to see the shop. Guan Sik told
01:03:35everyone that the broker said a golf course would be built here and it would soon be incredibly lively
01:03:39with lots of customers. Soon everyone arrived at a desolate commercial area. Standing in the middle
01:03:45of nowhere, Ae Soon and Guan Sik renovated the shop looking forward to prosperity after the golf course
01:03:51opened. This was the first time the couple had taken such a big risk, if the shop had no customers
01:03:57they would have to sell their apartment to pay off their debts. Guan Sik was curious why Ae Soon had so
01:04:02easily agreed to him buying the shop. Ae Soon smiled saying that when Guan Sik said he wanted to buy the
01:04:08shop. His expression was exactly the same as when they ran away together 30 years ago, so she agreed
01:04:13without hesitation. The two looked up at the empty shop in front of them, unaware that unforeseen
01:04:19difficulties were about to come that night. The son found out that the broker who sold the shop to
01:04:24Guan Sik had run away. And the vegetable garden that Guan Sik had sold was used to build a restaurant.
01:04:30And its value plummeted, that meant that Guan Sik had been scammed by a fraudulent corporation.
01:04:35The son cursed his useless father, saying that he was too old to be doing such stupid things.
01:04:42If the vegetable garden was still there, there would have been money for his daughter to study
01:04:46abroad. Hearing this, Ae Soon angrily scolded her son for being ungrateful, the vegetable garden
01:04:53was Guan Sik's property, so he could do whatever he wanted with it, if it wasn't for wanting to give
01:04:57his children a better life. He wouldn't have risked his entire life on this gamble, Guan Sik had never
01:05:03lived for himself a single day, he was the last person who should be scolded. Gum Yang heard the
01:05:08news that her father had been scammed and ran around, everywhere borrowing money to help her
01:05:12father pay off his debts. She complained to her mother that from childhood she had always educated
01:05:17her to be the pillar of the family, which made her feel suffocated, she blamed her mother for
01:05:22sacrificing too much, sending her to study abroad, which made her always carry a burden of guilt.
01:05:27Whenever she thought about her parents doing everything they could and putting all their
01:05:31hopes on her, she felt pressured, after saying this she burst into tears and angrily left home.
01:05:36Ae Soon looked at the vegetables that Gum Yang didn't take with her with a heart full of grievances
01:05:41that she didn't know where to vent. She looked up at the photos stuck on the refrigerator, and her
01:05:45daughter's apologies and tears couldn't help but fall. She blamed herself for being useless, for letting
01:05:50her daughter run around borrowing money while pregnant, just like she was back then, powerless.
01:05:55A few months later the day came for Gum Yang to give birth. Unfortunately Gum Yang had prolonged
01:06:00labor for more than 12 hours, but the baby still wouldn't come out. Park Chang-go anxiously called
01:06:06Ae Soon, telling her to come because Gum Yang was having a difficult birth and kept asking to see her.
01:06:12Ae Soon rushed to the hospital and successfully helped her daughter give birth to the baby.
01:06:17After this experience Gum Yang realized that her mother was only 18 years old back then.
01:06:21Giving birth to her in such terrible circumstances. And must have suffered even more, she hugged her
01:06:28mother and cried. Ae Soon took care of her daughter's food and drink. Guan Sik made the bed for her,
01:06:35and Park Chang-go kept talking about the baby's condition. Even laughing and saying that Gum Yang was
01:06:41like a weak princess, Guan Sik wasn't happy and scolded him not to forget his place. Winter passed and spring
01:06:47came. Guan Sik finally decided to open a restaurant. Although the location of the shop was far from the
01:06:52city, he could deliver food, relying on his hard work and dedication to develop the restaurant.
01:06:57Soon Guan Sik and his son rode a small motorcycle, distributing flyers, introducing dried squid to every
01:07:04house. After years of hardship, God finally began to take care of Guan Sik's family. In 2002 the Korea-Japan
01:07:11World Cup was very lively, and people gathered to watch soccer. Guan Sik's home-delivered dried squid
01:07:17became an indispensable snack for soccer viewers. Thanks to this boost Guan Sik's restaurant business
01:07:22quickly prospered. Not only that but entering the 21st century. Jeju Island also became a popular
01:07:29tourist and filming location. And the restaurant welcomed wave after wave of tourists and even
01:07:35celebrities. A top Korean actress made a special trip to Guan Sik's restaurant and filmed a commercial.
01:07:40This actress had a connection with Guan Sik. A few years ago the actress was caught in a scandal.
01:07:45In despair she boarded Guan Sik's fishing boat and wanted to jump into the sea and end her life,
01:07:50but was rescued by Guan Sik. When the ambulance arrived, Guan Sik thoughtfully put his jacket over
01:07:56her face to prevent others from recognizing her. The actress had always been grateful to Guan Sik,
01:08:01and wanted to repay him but Guan Sik always refused. This time she finally found an opportunity,
01:08:07after being promoted by the actress. The restaurant's business became incredibly prosperous.
01:08:12Ai Sun had never been so happy. Now that the family's financial situation was better,
01:08:17she decided to fulfill her childhood dream and start writing poetry. But before writing poetry she
01:08:23still had to take care of her beloved daughter. Ai Sun received a call for help from her daughter.
01:08:28Her granddaughter was not listening and broke a rice bowl. Ai Sun helped her daughter take care of her
01:08:33child and also cleaned the house spotless. Gum Yang came home from work and blamed her mother for
01:08:37working too hard, which made her feel guilty. Ai Sun knew her daughter was working hard taking care of
01:08:42her child. She reminded Gum Yang not to think of her child as her whole world and to do whatever she
01:08:47wanted to do without hesitating. If she forced herself to live a life she didn't want, resentment would
01:08:53definitely arise. And she would eventually create pressure for her children. After Ai Sun said this,
01:08:59she left her daughter deep in thought and returned to Jeju Island. After her mother left, Gum Yang talked
01:09:05with Park Chang-go about wanting to use the money to buy a piano for their daughter and to take her
01:09:09parents for a comprehensive health checkup. Park Chang-go loved his wife and of course nodded in
01:09:14agreement. Guan-sik and Ai Sun went to the hospital for a health checkup, after a stomach and intestinal
01:09:19endoscopy. Ai Sun woke up first. She noticed that Guan-sik, while dreaming, kept calling out the name of
01:09:25their youngest son and shedding tears. Ai Sun then realized that Guan-sik, just like her, had buried
01:09:31the pain of losing their youngest son in his heart and had never truly recovered. One day before the
01:09:36memorial day of their youngest son, Ai Sun went to the grave to find Guan-sik. She realized that every
01:09:43time the memorial day of their youngest son came, Guan-sik was afraid of seeing Ai Sun heartbroken.
01:09:48To avoid her he always visited the grave one day early. But Ai Sun didn't know that every time she
01:09:53visited the grave of their youngest son. Guan-sik secretly followed her, fearing that she might do
01:09:59something drastic and jump into the sea. The health checkup results showed that Guan-sik had health
01:10:04problems for a long time. Guan-sik had suffered from arthritis. This health checkup revealed that
01:10:09he had multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer similar to leukemia. Now the condition had progressed
01:10:15to kidney failure, and he had to receive treatment immediately. Ai Sun and Gum-yang could hardly accept
01:10:20this shocking news and hurriedly arranged for Guan-sik to undergo chemotherapy. In the blink of an
01:10:25ice-spring arrived. Ai Sun supported Guan-sik as he went for chemotherapy. Guan-sik again blamed her for
01:10:31always looking at his feet instead of looking at the blooming flowers in front of her. Ai Sun held her
01:10:36husband's hand. Her eyes red. Guan-sik picked a flower that had fallen on her head, worrying about how
01:10:42lonely his wife would be in the future. After chemotherapy, Ai Sun was busy helping her husband hold
01:10:48the examination ticket and register. But Ai Sun was old and unfamiliar with the high-tech medical
01:10:53system, so she kept making mistakes and getting scolded by the staff. Guan-sik couldn't bear to
01:10:59see his wife being bullied. So he stepped forward to defend Ai Sun. When Gum-yang arrived, she became
01:11:05angry with her daughter, ordering her to accompany her to the hospital from now on. Ai Sun comforted her
01:11:11daughter. Guan-sik stood by and watched an elderly woman who had missed her appointment number,
01:11:16thinking that Ai Sun would also be lonely and helpless like that in the future.
01:11:19And he felt extremely sad, that night he sent his wife home so his daughter could come and sleep with
01:11:24him. All night he told Gum-yang about Ai Sun's life from when she was young. When he mentioned the two
01:11:30running away, he recalled the three things he had promised Ai Sun years ago, to help Ai Sun become a
01:11:36poet, to send her to college, and to go to Seoul. Only when he was about to pass away did he fulfill
01:11:41Ai Sun's dream of writing poetry. Finally Guan-sik asked his daughter to take care of Ai Sun after
01:11:47he passed away. He knew that he would be failing his daughter by asking her to take care of his wife.
01:11:52But just thinking about Ai Sun being lonely and alone made him so sad that he couldn't sleep.
01:11:57In his final moments Guan-sik wanted to go home to live. Arriving home, his son bowed his head and wiped
01:12:03the sofa that he had bought for his father. Opening his eyes and seeing his father's thin body,
01:12:08he couldn't help but burst into tears. He remembered back then because his birthday
01:12:12and the memorial day of his younger brother coincided. His grandmother didn't allow him
01:12:16to celebrate his birthday. Guan-sik secretly took him out to eat black bean noodles and bought him
01:12:21toys for his birthday. Like that every year his dad secretly took him out to celebrate his
01:12:26birthday. The son had actually known for a long time that his parents also loved him.
01:12:30But because his sister was spoiled too much, he had deliberately forgotten the love his parents had
01:12:35for him. As the days went by, Gum Yang's company became successful. In her speech she narrated the
01:12:41initial intention when establishing the online trading company. Wanting to help those who have
01:12:46dreams but don't have the opportunity to go to school like her mother. To be able to study on her own,
01:12:51Ai Sun was deeply touched after listening. Good news followed, Ai Sun's poetry collection was published.
01:12:57She joyfully told Guan-sik the news, she had fulfilled her promise to herself. Guan-sik hugged his
01:13:03wife's poetry collection and couldn't hold back his tears. Excitedly picking up Ai Sun and spinning
01:13:08her around. In the evening Ai Sun begged Guan-sik not to leave her. Even if it was just to stay for
01:13:13one more happy year. But Guan-sik was also powerless. He told Ai Sun to promise him not to
01:13:19cry at his funeral. He only needed to see his wife heartbroken to have his heart shattered. Guan-sik gently
01:13:25comforted Ai Sun who was crying like rain. Just like he had always comforted and encouraged her. It was
01:13:31precisely because of Guan-sik that Ai Sun was able to feel like she was living in heaven no matter how
01:13:36hard the days were. Guan-sik's health continued to weaken and he finally couldn't hold on any longer
01:13:41and had to be hospitalized. Ai Sun looked at Guan-sik struggling to breathe through the glass, they had
01:13:47been husband and wife for so many years that they knew what the other was thinking without needing to
01:13:51say anything. Ai Sun thanked this life for having Guan-sik by her side, she had obtained a life of unparalleled
01:13:57happiness. Guan-sik used his hand to signal his wife to pull down her mask. In his final moments
01:14:03he wanted to engrave the image of Ai Sun in his mind. Guan-sik's death was heartbreaking for everyone.
01:14:08Losing her father, Gum-yang received a savings book that Guan-sik had left for her. Inside was the money
01:14:14that his daughter had given him each time. Compared to spending their children's money, the hearts of the
01:14:19children were enough to make their parents happy for a long time. As for Ai Sun, she lived in the small
01:14:24house that the two of them shared. She often felt that Guan-sik was still there, present in every
01:14:29corner of the house by her side. Ai Sun was suddenly moved, opened the notebook and wrote lines of poetry.
01:14:35Gradually the content in the notebook increased. The grandchildren also gradually grew up. Gum-yang
01:14:41photographed her mother's poetry collection and sent it to the editor-in-chief of the publishing house.
01:14:45The editor-in-chief looked through the poetry collection and was moved to tears. The editor-in-chief
01:14:51also didn't know what was happening to her. Tears just kept flowing non-stop after reading through the
01:14:56entire book. The editor-in-chief gave her assessment, she felt proud of the author of the poetry collection.
01:15:02Not long after, Ai Sun's poetry collection was published officially debuting. She refused to live
01:15:07with her children and lived alone in the small house from years ago. Her only wish was to be able to
01:15:12see Gum-yang more often before she passed away. Looking back on her life, she had so many happy memories,
01:15:18the most precious memories in her life were all written in the poetry collection,
01:15:22because of having the poetry collection as a companion. Ai Sun lived very happily every day,
01:15:27the back of the poetry collection printed a photo of her and Guan-sik when they were young.
01:15:31Ai Sun remembered that from the age of nine, Guan-sik had always been by her side, the two had
01:15:37experienced so many ups and downs and hardships together, if it weren't for Guan-sik bringing her a
01:15:42happy life. This poetry collection would not have been born, Guan-sik's love was the best nourishment in her
01:15:47life. This is where the story ends, don't forget to like and subscribe to not miss out on more
