00:00Another year, another incredibly hauntingly beautiful, critically acclaimed period piece.
00:07Are you not worried you're going to be a typecaster to only be in bangers from now on?
00:11Because it seems like your hit rate is absolutely phenomenal these last 12 months.
00:14Oh, thank you very much. Thank you.
00:17Yes, I didn't realise that between this film and The Brutalist,
00:21there's actually quite a lot of themes that are very similar.
00:25So I was obviously channelling that at the time of doing both of them.
00:30I always wonder, when you make movies like this and The Brutalist,
00:33that are so beautifully shot.
00:35Obviously you can see your DOP and look at the previous work they made,
00:38but you don't really know until you see some edits put together
00:42how affecting these stories are going to be.
00:46Like, how much of a leap of faith is it for you when you kind of sign on to a script like that?
00:50Yeah, I mean, that's the risk, I guess.
00:54You take a bit of a punch, you read something and you have a reaction to it
00:58and you think, well, I think this is quite good.
01:00But you never quite know through the whole process how it's going to turn out.
01:05So when it actually turns out and it seems to be good and people seem to like it,
01:10you think, oh, well, that's jolly good, isn't it?
01:13Because you really, you're just taking a risk.
01:18You're just, you feel something, you feel connected to something
01:21and then you just jump in and see what happens.
01:24It definitely seems to be working at the moment, so congratulations for that.
01:27Incredible cast in this with Kerry and obviously Joel with an unbelievable performance.
01:33He was obviously, he was an exec producer on this as well.
01:36Does that ever change your relationship with a co-actor on a project
01:40when they're wearing two different hats or is it all kind of very separated?
01:45I think usually when an actor is involved in the producing side,
01:50it just is testament to how much they love the story.
01:53And in being, you know, in doing that, wearing that extra hat, so to speak,
01:58it just means it's another way of getting that film made and pushing it over the line.
02:01So often it just, it's testament to the passion behind it.
02:06You just know they're extra invested when you turn off.
02:10Yeah, exactly, exactly.
02:12And you know, in any film, it's all about the different people involved
02:17and if you trust them and you like them
02:20and you think there's something worth it in the story,
02:23then you're, hopefully, you're going to make something that's of value.
02:26It feels like, speaking about things of value,
02:28my favourite kind of movies have always been that kind of the mid-budget,
02:32introspective, beautifully shot sort of think-piece sort of cinema.
02:37And some people disagree with me when I say this,
02:38but it feels like in the cinemas,
02:40they started to slow down a little bit over the last kind of like 10 or 15 years.
02:44Big budget blockbusters have kind of dominated in a way.
02:46And it feels because of the streamers, they,
02:48I don't know whether it's just because things like The Brutalist
02:51where they're being so critically acclaimed,
02:52but it feels like there's some kind of resurgence going on.
02:56Are you seeing that in the work that comes your way?
02:58Absolutely.
02:59It feels like the appetite for cinema has really grown.
03:04Yeah, it's been quite fascinating, particularly in this last year or so.
03:08I think coming out of COVID, I think people are really keen to get out.
03:14They're really keen to get to theatres.
03:16I think also the world, you know, we're at a very complicated moment.
03:21There's something really reassuring about seeing a narrative told over a limited time.
03:27And you're sort of, you're desperate to put your phone away
03:30and just be taken by a story for a couple of hours.
03:33I also kind of feel like because we live our lives online now
03:36and on our phones and things like that,
03:37we don't have those connections.
03:39They don't happen in our lives as often.
03:40So when we see it reflected in stories,
03:42we're like yearning for that feeling again,
03:46to feel like strong about something.
03:47I would absolutely agree.
03:49And I think that's why we're all here with Train Dreams,
03:53is because this film is testament to that need for human connection
03:57and how much we all are desperate for it and crave it.
04:02Well, I'm craving more movies like this,
04:03so keep smashing it.
04:04I'll see you hopefully in 12 months' time with another banger.
04:06Fantastic.
04:07And thanks for this one. Congratulations.
04:09All the best.
