00:00Check out this shot right here.
00:02We got a 1972 Datsun, we have a DB6, and a Jaguar.
00:07Corvette's cool too, but these three cars
00:10next to each other, pretty iconic.
00:14Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoating.
00:30We started St. Paul, Minnesota, where 135 Classics take on the great race.
00:54Nine days, hidden checkpoints, and precision driving to South Carolina.
01:00Along the way, family teams and vintage flatheads
01:03show it's about more than miles, it's about memories.
01:07Next, at Southfield Classics, brand new SE31T trucks roll out.
01:12GM 3100 replicas reimagined as all-electric hot rods.
01:17Finally, we hit Echo Park Speedway, where a 93 Toyota Supra gets a tune-up
01:22and prepares for the 2026 NOPE Nationals.
01:30We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:34Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance,
01:37and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:40From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:42Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard,
01:44it's a complete family member, it's an experience.
01:47All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:50Winning an ace in the great race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:54Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:56Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:58I guess we'll find out tonight.
02:00We're kicking off the great race in St. Paul, Minnesota.
02:03135 cars, hidden checkpoints, and nothing but precision driving.
02:08It's family, it's teamwork, and it's nine days of pure adventure
02:12all the way to South Carolina.
02:15Welcome to another great season of Sam's Garage.
02:17Check it out, we got the 240 back in action.
02:21We're at the great race, St. Paul, Minnesota, the start of the first day.
02:25Today is a practice run day.
02:26We just had a driver's meeting.
02:28Doug is in the building taking care of some business,
02:30and we're going to be going all the way down to South Carolina this year.
02:34You guys don't want to miss it.
02:35We're going to bring you half the episode,
02:36double the action from the great race.
02:39We're even starting off at one of the biggest events in the country,
02:42which is the back to the 50s at the fairgrounds right here in St. Paul.
02:46I can't wait to go to the show tomorrow,
02:48where the start of the race is going to take off at noon from the show.
02:52I cannot wait.
02:53Volunteer is my sixth year on the great race.
02:57I kind of got wrangled into this six, seven years ago by Jeff Stone,
03:00the director of the great race.
03:02Riverside, California was my first stop.
03:04Showed up, and what you see in the background is what Jeff told me
03:08I needed to set up every day at the great race at the finish line every day.
03:12So six years, seven years, we've been doing this every day for the great race and
03:16everything that the great race brings to town each night.
03:19Me and my crew is in charge of setting up, and we've been doing it ever since.
03:24The camaraderie of the race cars, the race individuals, the teams, the drivers, the crew,
03:30Coker Tire, everybody.
03:31It's just, it's great being here.
03:33You look forward to it every year, and it's only nine days.
03:36And then we get to spend 11 months and two weeks trying to figure out how to get back
03:41and where we're going.
03:42And my oldest two sons have been with me two different years on the great race.
03:46And this year, my youngest son's with me.
03:48Great family event.
03:50Jeff's wonderful to work for and the whole great race crew.
03:53We look legit, right?
03:54Because we got the RV.
03:55We got two chase vehicles.
03:56We've got the race car.
03:57We got ladies in the background sitting with their dog.
04:00We got the whole family out here to make sure that we're going to complete this race.
04:04And we're no longer novice this year.
04:06We're actually sportsmen, which means instead of coming in 89th place,
04:10we may come in 87th place as long as Doug does his job and I do my job driving.
04:15And you guys, this is a slow technical race.
04:18It is all about how well you can follow instructions and drive the car at a steady pace slowly.
04:24And so you think that this is easy.
04:26It's actually much harder than a race you would normally go.
04:29You're trying to beat the time and go very fast, much harder race than that.
04:32So you want to stay tuned.
04:34It's going to be very fun.
04:38Tim's quarters, okay?
04:39This is where Tim does all the driving.
04:41We have a new guy.
04:42His name is Anthony.
04:43And there's Deanne.
04:44She is here for the support team as well.
04:46She is Doug's better half.
04:49Fourth year, me and my brother, each time we run the great race,
04:52we find something different that needs to be fixed on the car.
04:55But I think at this point on our fourth year, I think we're in really good shape.
05:00We've rebuilt the transmission.
05:01We've built the engine, suspension.
05:03So the brakes for anybody that's into cars.
05:06If you don't have a support crew, you need to be able to work on your own car,
05:09which that's what we are.
05:10We're our own support crew.
05:12But we've got through everything, and here we are again.
05:18So what we got here is a 1972.
05:20So we have a choke.
05:22That's in order to get the carburetors all ready to go when it's cold.
05:25That way it'll dump fuel.
05:27Let's see what happens.
05:28Let's see if this Nissan's as reliable as we think it is.
05:32You know, there's another type of choke too.
05:35And that's when Sam pisses me off and I do this.
05:38So that could happen today.
05:40If it doesn't happen today, it's going to happen at some point this week.
05:42Yeah, absolutely guaranteed.
05:44Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:48Brought to you by the following companies.
06:18Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:33The great race isn't just about cars.
06:36It's about family, heritage, and the thrill of the journey.
06:40From father-son teams to daughters navigating,
06:43these classics are rallying 2300 miles with original flatheads and three speeds still going strong.
06:50We've been doing this since 2005 was our first year.
06:53So about 20 years now.
06:54We all got started with my grandpa.
06:56He started in 2000.
06:58Father-son team.
06:59We do, in addition to the great race, we do a thing called the ISDE,
07:02which is an international motorcycle race that we support Team USA for every year
07:06and a different country every year as well.
07:08It's an original 21-stud flathead V8 motor, three-speed transmission, original driveline.
07:14We actually just got done replacing the driveshaft coupler on the rear end.
07:18We ended up shearing almost all the splines off of it.
07:21So we just got that back together about an hour ago.
07:24So we're ready to go rallying now.
07:26The great race is about really, in your case,
07:28and a lot of cases out here, hanging out with your family.
07:30Yeah.
07:30Yeah, my daughter is the navigator.
07:32Yep.
07:33So she is the one responsible for keeping us on track and on time.
07:37I'm just the driver, which makes it a lot easier, because if there's a mistake made,
07:41I don't get yelled at, and I don't yell at her.
07:44That is so true, right?
07:45The driver's got it made.
07:46Yep.
07:46You can't replace the time with them, so it's a fun sport.
07:49I really like the great race.
07:50There's good people that are out there.
07:53We take it to car shows.
07:55We take it to cars and coffee.
07:56We just take it whenever we want to go somewhere that people want to take a look at you.
08:00So that is so cool.
08:01And this is going to easily handle 2,300 miles.
08:03Yes.
08:04Very nice car.
08:04I think so.
08:05I'm real anxious to get to the fairgrounds tonight.
08:10We're at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
08:12I am here with my family at Back to the 50s.
08:16We work at thekeyguys.com.
08:19It's our family-owned business, and we've been coming here for about 17 years.
08:25I am not familiar with the great race, but I've now heard about it.
08:29And it sounds very cool, and I'm excited to see it.
08:31I do like classic hot rods.
08:33If I could have one, it'd be a little bit too new to be here.
08:37But I would love to have a 64.5 or 65 Mustang Fastback.
08:43Back to the 50s show.
08:45Look at all the people.
08:46Look at all the cars around us.
08:48This is the biggest event in the country every year.
08:5010,000 to 15,000 cars show up registered.
08:54That's not including the people who are coming through the gate.
08:56Pretty cool.
08:56We had a very interesting day today.
08:59We ended up with a really good score overall.
09:01We still came out with an ace, a seven-second day.
09:04Three seconds of that, we can't be blamed for.
09:06Right before the last checkpoint on the day, we come around a corner,
09:09and there's the wonderful public just decided to park their car in the middle of the road,
09:13which, why wouldn't you?
09:14I mean, that's what roads are for, right?
09:15Right.
09:16And so we come up.
09:16We have to stop behind this car.
09:18The car freaks out.
09:20We did the right thing and started yelling curse words at the top of our lungs,
09:23and continued on our way once they got out of our way.
09:26We're trying to make up all the time we lost right there.
09:28We come around a corner.
09:29Boom, checkpoint.
09:30We got caught with three of our seven seconds on the day right there.
09:36You go to the website.
09:37You're going to register.
09:37You're going to get online.
09:38There's going to be a two-year waiting list.
09:40Once you get here, you're going to go through what you saw Doug going through.
09:43When you're going to go through inspections, when you get all your stickers,
09:45if you haven't already put them on your car.
09:47There's a lot of stuff on YouTube for the rookies to learn how to do it.
09:51There's a lot to it.
09:53And for you pilots out there, to kind of give you an example what it's like,
09:56it's like instrument flying for eight hours.
09:59You've got to be so focused all the time.
10:02Otherwise, you can miss a turn.
10:04Just in a blink, you can miss it.
10:05Or your speed may not be right.
10:07Absolutely.
10:08The only thing you guys need is a 1974 or older vehicle.
10:11And this is the back to the 50s show.
10:12So everything 64 and older is only allowed here.
10:16But they made an exception for us because we do have cars up to 74 here amongst the show.
10:21So that's pretty cool they made that exception for us.
10:23That's an incredible turnout.
10:24It was so much fun today.
10:26Shook the rust off.
10:27We just had a fantastic time.
10:29Today we're going to be showing you guys how you can prevent rust.
10:43It's a 1968 Corvette, numbers matching big block, four-speed car.
10:47I bought it in October, restored it.
10:49Just a great car.
10:50I've taken it on the power tour.
10:51I drive it, try to put some miles on it, but not too many because of the original motor.
10:55And we're here today to try to do a little rust prevention.
10:59There's an issue with the frame in that the cross rails and the side rails,
11:02I noticed when I was under the car a thousand times doing the restoration.
11:06You can see little pieces of surface rust up inside the frame rails.
11:09They have drain holes, but I think moisture still gets up there and creates some surface rust.
11:14So I've blown that out to blow as much of the rust out as possible.
11:17Then you and I had a conversation about it, and you recommended that we use the NHLU spray.
11:22We're going to use a nozzle. We're going to take this. We're going to spray it all in the cavities of the frame.
11:26This is also very good that if you guys got engines sitting around like I do,
11:30stored, waiting for a project in the future, the cylinders can get rusty.
11:33So take your sparkler out and spray some of this in the cylinders as well,
11:36and that'll do a nice coating of oil, unlike something that would maybe coat it for a second,
11:41then run off. This will actually stay.
11:43And then when you go to crank the engine up, it'll just burn out completely.
11:46So you want to do rust prevention? Check out NHLU.
11:49Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHLU.
12:01At Southfield Classics, we're checking out the brand new SC31T trucks, replicas of the iconic GM 3100.
12:10Built from scratch right here in the USA. These aren't restorations.
12:14They're all-electric hot rods with wheel-wood brakes, custom chassis, and zero maintenance headaches.
12:21Here we are today at Southfield Classics. I'm here with Dan Paul. He is the COO of this
12:26manufacturing company of building the most iconic series of GM trucks.
12:31Correct. It's a 3100 replica that we built under the new replica car law.
12:37And you guys, these are done to the nines. Think of it as a hot rod, right? It's got all the components
12:43you would use when building these cars from scratch. Wheel-wood brakes, quick performance,
12:489-inch rear end, boxed-in frame because you guys built the frame from scratch.
12:52Correct. We do all our own chassis work. We do all our own body placement,
12:56fitment. All the body panels are built in-house. So basically everything on this truck is built in-house
13:00with all brand new parts.
13:01Now let's talk about the power train of these vehicles. You see, they're absolutely beautiful
13:06hot rod trucks. These are brand new, but they're high voltage, all electric, and that's what makes
13:11them even cooler because you guys, cool is cool, fast is fast. And I remember being in the kid in the 80s
13:16going to Radio Shack and getting a remote control car, hearing those sounds and having the fun that you
13:21had with them. Now it's just a bigger version of it. You're out there, you've got smiles ear to ear because
13:27you're in this beautiful truck and it just takes you back to your kid because of the noise that you're hearing.
13:31Correct. It sounds a lot like a, like you said, like a small RC car only amplified by 10. So you
13:37got a nice whine or a whistle, but that's the only sound you're going to hear. If you're in drive mode,
13:42regular mode, you can actually creep up on people. They never hear you coming.
13:45Absolutely. And these are got no issues as far as maintenance goes. You've got regular maintenance,
13:50you've got brakes, you've got tires, you only have any minimal cooling hoses and the cooling system
13:55is only there to keep the inverter cool, right?
13:57Correct. It's only there, it's a low pressure system and only has about five pounds of pressure.
14:01And it's basically just to travel and pump through the system, keep the batteries and the motor
14:05and the inverter cool as you go. Yeah. No, no issues as far as reliability goes.
14:09These high voltage vehicles don't have any of those problems. So it's just nothing but
14:13absolute satisfaction and joy. Done to the nines, brand new vehicles. Every part of them is brand new.
14:19And through this season on Sam's garage, we're going to be showing you every bit of these vehicles,
14:24their individual components and how they're assembled, what makes them new and how they're certified.
14:29Correct. So we're going to try to go through the whole process of how we actually build the vehicle
14:33from scratch, from absolute nothing, build up through the whole process to we actually complete
14:37a vehicle by the end of the season. And if you guys are in the customization industry,
14:41you know that if you wanting a car, let's say you want a custom car, you're looking at two to five,
14:46six years, sometimes even more. In this case, you're going to have a brand new manufactured vehicle
14:51within six months time. And they're going to build it just like that Restomod. Correct.
14:55We're actually going through the process at least two times. Sometimes it's multifaceted,
14:58multi-fit. But what we're trying to do is basically eliminate that time factor to where you don't
15:03have to wait two years to have your Restomod. This way, you can actually come in, pick your colors,
15:07pick your interior, pick your wheels and tires, and you're on the road in six months.
15:10And these things are all built right here in America. GM certified bits and pieces. We're going
15:14to show you how to put them together. The original frame rails, they get modified right here in
15:18Brazelton, Georgia. They get assembled. They are fully 100% USA made, and that makes them even cooler.
15:24It does, and it helps with a lot of the tariffs that are going on now. We try to keep as much
15:28as we can in the United States to keep everything moving forward. All right, Dan. So let's say somebody
15:32is interested in purchasing one of these vehicles. What steps do they have to take?
15:35So the process basically is to contact us, come out and talk with us. We'll sit down in the office,
15:39and we'll go over build projections, what you want it to look like. And then we'll talk about price and
15:44value. Usually what we do is we take a deposit up front to get started, get all the parts in. Once we have
15:49all the parts in place, then we start production on the vehicle. So you can go to Southfield Classics,
15:54come on out, and you can get yourself a brand new SC31T.
16:05Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
16:09Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
16:35We're getting ready for the 2026 Nopi Nationals. And nothing says iconic like a 93 MK4 Toyota Supra.
16:50From its legendary twin-turbo inline six to 2,000-plus horsepower single-turbo builds,
16:57this car rewrote the rulebook.
16:59Getting ready for the Nopi Nationals. By the time you guys see this, you'll be thinking about 2026
17:05September Nopi Nationals. Next week, September 13th and 14th, we have a big show going on,
17:11and this right here is one of the most iconic cars that is part of that show. So this right here is a
17:151993 MK4 Toyota Supra. It's funny because behind me is its bigger brother. Back in the day when they
17:22made these two cars, this was the rich man Supra. It's identically the same as far as the chassis and
17:27powertrain goes, but non-turbo. Then later on, this became the poor man Supra. So that's kind of funny.
17:32What made this vehicle so iconic was the power plant that's in it. This is an inline six twin-turbo,
17:43made 320 horsepower from the factory. With some bolt-ons and a little bit of tuning,
17:47you can make 415 at the wheels. But if you were to remove the factory turbos and put on a big
17:53single turbo with equal runners on the exhaust manifold, you can make upwards of 2,000-3,000 horsepower,
18:00depending on how well built the engine block is. So the engine is very, very, very strong,
18:06popular for that reason. It's one of the dominating engines on the street. That's why they're so iconic.
18:13Forever they've been completely supported by the aftermarket community and nothing has slowed down
18:17since. So this right here is very iconic, but it's got a couple problems. This is an old school build.
18:22It's absolutely beautiful. It's kept itself in very nice shape. It was built in the late 90s. It's got a
18:28wide body kit on it. And it's got the original spark plugs, tie in both everything since 1993,
18:34which makes it 32 years old. So we have a misfire. And we're going to diagnose the misfire.
18:42First thing I would do to diagnose a misfire, this thing has problems. We do have a check engine
18:46light for a code 14. What happens is that wire is really small and it starts to corrode under the hood.
18:52Right at the connector, about two inches from the pin, it's all green. So what I did was I went back
18:57in about two or three inches further, put a new little pigtail, took the pin out, put the wire
19:02onto the pin, put it back into the connector and fixed that portion of it. The first thing I did was
19:06also go to the coils and I unplugged the coils one by one to see which cylinder is misfiring. It's hard to
19:13get to the injectors and it's hard to get to the exhaust manifold with a temperature gun. So the best way to
19:17do it is to go through each coil pack and disconnect them and see which one does not change the way the
19:23engine runs. That'll be your misfire. In this case, it's cylinder number two. So the first thing I did
19:29was change the wire and make sure it's fixed. I have a cool igniter in my toolbox from back in the old
19:34days. I went ahead and plugged it up making sure it's not the igniter. So then I went ahead to the
19:39computer and made sure that the pin for that reference signal wire is good. Everything under the computer
19:44is non-corroded and totally fine. So I went ahead and changed out the computer because I have those
19:49in my toolbox as well. See back in the day we built a bunch of these. Now I'm able to continue on with
19:54my maintenance. What I'm going to do is change out all the spark plugs and what's going to happen is
19:59half of those connectors are going to break because they're 32 years old. So I'm going to have to get new
20:03connectors and re-pin them. Put new spark plugs in, put new valve cover gaskets in. The time belt is
20:09original. This is a non-interference motor but why take the chance, right? So I'm going to go ahead
20:14and change out the time belt. The water pump, if you want to change it out, you can. This is a Toyota.
20:18They last forever. In some cases an old Toyota water pump is better than the new one off the shelf. So
20:24I'm going to go ahead and put a time belt on it, put spark plugs on it, make sure everything is cool,
20:28and then I'm going to take it down to Echo Park Speedway this weekend at the Nopi Nationals Super Show.
20:44Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
