00:00It better be a good number, Doug.
00:0253.
00:03Good job.
00:04Need you somewhere to sit down?
00:05I need to go sit next to Christian.
00:07Well, let's go in.
00:08We got to get fuel.
00:09We got to get all that crap.
00:10Where are you going?
00:11Is there a back door?
00:12Where are you going?
00:13You can either come in this way on the back door or go out the side door.
00:15Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30First, we hit the road with 135 classics in The Great Race.
00:53A nine-day rally where timing, teamwork, and family fuel every mile.
00:58Then we go deeper into the heart of the journey, where vintage flatheads and father-daughter
01:03teams carry the spirit of the competition across 2,300 miles.
01:07Back in the shop, Southfield Classics takes us under the skin of their all-electric SC31T,
01:14classic lines hiding a high-tech chassis.
01:17And finally, Sam unveils the long-awaited CRNSX, an icon reborn 15 seasons in the making.
01:28We have 135-plus cars in The Great Race.
01:34Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance.
01:37And so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:40From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:42Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard.
01:44It's a complete family member.
01:46It's an experience.
01:47All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:50Winning an ace in The Great Race is just, it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:54Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:56Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:58I guess we'll find out tonight.
02:00The Great Race is brought to you by Car Capsule.
02:03We preserve, protect, and present the finest vehicles in the world.
02:08So what we're doing here this morning is going to be getting our instructions so we can do the start of the race.
02:13Today we're going to be going to the Iowa 80 stop, which is the country's biggest truck stop.
02:17We're going to check out a couple of museums as well.
02:19And then we're going to go on to Waterloo.
02:21I don't know where we're spending the night, but I'm sure Doug knows where we're spending the night.
02:25Because remember guys, my job here is to drive the car.
02:28Drive the car, that's it.
02:30Last night when the race finished, the driver of the 110 Camaro, Tim Kiley, came to me and said that the pedal goes to the floor on the brakes.
02:43And so we pulled it inside.
02:46We thought there was something going on with the brakes.
02:48It turns out that the brakes were good.
02:51We jacked it up on the right to bleed the right side front.
02:55We jacked it up on the left and when we did, we found that the wheel was wobbling.
02:59Well, the wheel wobbling was the actual issue that was making the brakes bad.
03:03So we went ahead and pulled the wheel off and found that one of the wheel bearings had gone bad.
03:11He's busy working on the car in the morning.
03:13I'm getting the instructions.
03:15He's got to hustle to get them all figured out because once we start driving, there ain't no writing going on.
03:20So it's a hoot.
03:21So this is the morning of the race and we have to get the car going.
03:24It's a lot more complicated than some of the cars on the race because it's older.
03:30It needs a little more love.
03:32Like for example, this morning I see that we lost the cap off our magneto and so we just had to take some electrical tape and put the magneto back in place.
03:41We have to add oil like any other car.
03:44It doesn't drive like a normal car.
03:46This is your brake.
03:47So it's a hand operated brake instead of a foot operated brake.
03:51This is your shift lever.
03:53So those are your gears.
03:56Your throttle is in the middle here, which is a little bit weird.
03:59And then you have this advance and retard which moves the magneto and the distributor up and forward to make it run better.
04:08So it's a lot of things to kind of keep moving when you're driving a car like this because of the ancient technology.
04:15Actually, this motor that's in the car was designed in 1905.
04:20It was originally designed by Mercedes out of Germany.
04:24And then America and France bought the plans to it in about 1910 and started putting it in their vehicles.
04:30And so this is a 1918 and it uses 1905 technology.
04:36It's a whole new world.
04:38I'm used to more of the racing style, faster, who gets there first kind of thing.
04:44Drag racing or anything like that.
04:46So this is a whole different aspect of everything.
04:50You know, you're timed.
04:51You have to be places at certain times.
04:53Everything is so detailed and down to the very second.
04:56So it's very different, but it's a lot of fun because of that.
05:00It keeps your mind going constantly.
05:01There's so much to think about and everything.
05:03It's really something else.
05:05I'm a gearhead in training, so pretty much everything is new.
05:08Over the last few years, I've been exposing myself to different types of racing, different everything,
05:13automotive gearheads.
05:14So this has been an amazing experience.
05:18I drove yesterday.
05:20I was definitely nervous.
05:22It helped that all of us, since everybody in the car, it was our first time.
05:26It was really helpful.
05:28I felt more comfortable making mistakes.
05:30And that's part of what I try to bring to the table is sharing that I struggle, sharing what it's like that we all start somewhere.
05:39Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:51Brought to you by the following companies.
05:52The following companies.
05:53The following companies.
06:21Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:26The Great Race isn't just about speed.
06:29It's about spirit.
06:30Families, friends, and vintage machines tackling 2,300 miles of hidden checkpoints, classic engines, and unforgettable stops.
06:39From flatheads to first timers, this is Heritage in Motion.
06:44The Great Race is brought to you by Rod In Supply.
06:47We don't just sell them, we race them.
06:51Our car is doing really well because it's a Nissan, right?
06:54It's the only real import here.
06:56The only thing I have is that to adjust the idle up a little bit because the year that it sat in Oklahoma, I don't know what happened.
07:02Maybe it was the gas, but it's a little too high.
07:04So what I'm going to do is lower it just a little bit.
07:07And I don't even need tools, I just need fingers.
07:09Right here, we're going to go just like that.
07:12You want to adjust your idle on a carbureted setup when it's fully warm.
07:16Complete operating temperature.
07:17And that goes with you guys and your idle screws if you have a mechanical throttle body, if you have fuel injected.
07:23Make sure it's completely operating temperature.
07:26The largest truck stop in the country.
07:28You can see that we're in Tornado Alley by all the flags with the wind.
07:31This is pretty cool because they're giving everybody a free tank of gas.
07:35When you guys finish up, come in, we'll top you off.
07:38That's a really big deal.
07:39It's a really big thank you guys.
07:41We really appreciate you doing that.
07:42Whatever grade these guys want, over 150 cars, that's saying something.
07:46And this is a very iconic truck stop.
07:49It's even got a museum attached.
07:51Very cool.
07:52If you guys are in the area and you're coming through, you've got to stop here whether you need gas or not.
07:55We're on our way to Moline, Iowa.
07:59I think it takes a lot of pressure off of them.
08:02They have less to worry about.
08:04They're consumed when they're in that vehicle during the day, checking the boxes, not missing any turns, speeds.
08:12They're reading everything, managing the right speeds.
08:16If they develop a problem, we typically have been able to provide the tools and, if necessary,
08:23go hunt for an automobile parts shop to get the parts that are needed because those things do happen.
08:31A couple of years ago, Curtis thought he had some brake tools that he needed.
08:36So I ran to the store, bought the brake tools that he needed so he can get his car back together.
08:41But it's that type of support.
08:43He didn't have to worry about it.
08:45We were there.
08:46This is a 1930 Ford Model A, and there's not much of the Model A left of it.
08:53It started out as a pickup truck, a pickup roadster.
08:56So the bed is gone.
08:57The fenders are gone.
08:58Sideboards are gone.
08:59We took off everything that you can to save weight.
09:02Pumped up the engine, putting out 120 horse, and we're doing great.
09:06Now, all those things takes away points, right?
09:09You get penalized in some way or another?
09:11The way that we did it is that we don't get penalized.
09:14You're kidding me.
09:15Yeah.
09:16So everything on the car is done in a way to not get penalized.
09:19So we still run original brakes, original transmission, original rear end, six-volt car.
09:26Wow, that's impressive.
09:27Yeah.
09:28That is very cool.
09:29So how did you guys do today?
09:30We got a one-minute, because we knocked it by one place, and we erased it.
09:34Right.
09:35It's difficult catching up one car at a time, right?
09:37So we had to do six of them.
09:39So we had to really go balls out and catch, took over enough cars.
09:43Isn't that the funnest part, though?
09:45Oh, it's great.
09:46Next time, if you could tell me what exit to get out of, that'd be great.
09:48Yeah, you know, Sam, we weren't the only ones that missed that little spot, you know,
09:53but next time I'll make sure that we're doing the mile markers this way we take a look at.
09:58And we've got to be far enough in front of it all the time, so that happens.
10:03I wish it happened more often.
10:04Yeah.
10:05So we went 21 miles out of our way, had to come 21 miles back, and then we were chasing
10:10everyone down, then we missed the right-hand turn.
10:12But we missed it quickly and got right back on course, still chased everybody else down.
10:16And we got, what, 18 minutes?
10:19So we cut that time by 22 minutes.
10:21It's a mile a minute, right?
10:23Yeah.
10:24Well, at 60 miles an hour, but we were running, yeah, we were way over there.
10:28It was so much fun.
10:29It was unbelievable.
10:33You guys, today vehicles have gotten double the price, sometimes triple the price, and
10:44we want to protect that investment and make sure that vehicle can last as long as possible
10:48on the road, and that's where NHLU comes in.
10:51We have a completely new product.
10:52NHLU boss wax hybrid.
10:54Mm-hmm.
10:55Vehicles come in with major corrosion.
10:57And I don't mean like, I mean surface rust, but stuff that you shouldn't see on the undercarriage
11:02of a vehicle.
11:03And that's the beginning, right?
11:04That's the beginning.
11:05And so if people say they want to use our box wax, great.
11:09Boss wax really isn't designed to go over rust.
11:11And so we're having to remove this rust and play games and whatever to get the surface
11:17the way we need it.
11:18So what we did was we said, okay, how can we mitigate that rust and still offer them the
11:24warranty?
11:25And so what we've done is we've made a product, and it's compatible with GMC.
11:29It'll displace moisture and oxygen.
11:31When it does, it's creeping.
11:32And it takes about three months before it solidifies and seals.
11:37And so it allows that to pass through.
11:39Then it seals, and you're not worried about encapsulation.
11:42You know, when you think about it, the maintenance is pennies to the dollar compared to replacing
11:46it and the investment money that you lose.
11:48Cheap insurance.
11:50Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHLU.
11:59We're back at Southfield Classics, where heritage meets high tech.
12:07This time, it's all about the chassis.
12:09Boxed frames, coilovers, air ride, and regen braking.
12:13Built from the ground up for the all-electric SC31T.
12:17Classic looks, cutting edge performance.
12:22Continuing on with our theme here at Southfield Classics.
12:25Last year, we showed you guys how they build the cab.
12:28And this year, we're going to go over the chassis.
12:30And the chassis is really cool because they start with original frame rails that they modify
12:34to make the truck overall.
12:36Correct.
12:37And this chassis is filled with all the hot rod components that we're all used to.
12:41Yep.
12:42So this is an actual original chassis that we used that was underneath one of our mule trucks,
12:46one of our test trucks.
12:47So this is where we started all the modification process, trying to figure out where everything
12:50actually went and placed before we started building our new chassis.
12:54So you start with a rail.
12:55We start with the rails.
12:56It's totally plain.
12:57Correct.
12:58Nothing on it.
12:59Nothing on it.
13:00You box it in.
13:01We box all the frame rails.
13:02And then we start adding the regular hot rod components, the four nine-inch rear end,
13:06ladder bar suspension.
13:07We make all our cross bracing.
13:09All the new stuff.
13:10All the new stuff.
13:11Wilwood brakes.
13:12Quick performance, nine-inch rear end.
13:14You got a four-link setup in the back.
13:16This particular one also has the option of an airbag system.
13:19Correct.
13:20So this one has RideTech air ride system on it.
13:22And that way it can basically air it out all the way to the ground.
13:24That is very cool.
13:25But if you wanted to, you can get that with coilovers.
13:28Yeah.
13:29So there's two options on our chassis for the three-pack system is coilovers and air ride.
13:34With the bigger truck, the six-pack system that has the further range, it is air ride only.
13:39And I'm noticing that you got a four-puck caliper in the front.
13:42You didn't go with a huge six-puck, 14-inch rotor.
13:45You got standard brakes in the rear, four-puck as well.
13:48And the reason being because this high-voltage vehicle has Regen braking.
13:52Correct.
13:53With the Regen, if you're running the Regen, you can actually turn it on and turn it off.
13:56So you can use it if you don't.
13:58And you can intensify the Regen.
13:59And you can intensify the Regen.
14:01So we didn't really need big brakes because of the Regen system.
14:04It automatically breaks your motor as you let off on the acceleration.
14:08And then basically your brakes are just to stop and be able to complete stop.
14:11That is incredible.
14:12Everything here looks like it also will fit under the factory body with no raising the floor of the bed.
14:18No.
14:19And that was a big deal for us.
14:20You know, we're building trucks.
14:21We wanted to be able to use it as a truck and it still be a truck.
14:24So for us, we wanted to keep standard bed height, but be able to get all our components underneath it.
14:29Absolutely.
14:30Those little luxuries.
14:31Yeah.
14:32That's what makes this older looking vehicle.
14:33Little smooth things, you know, little touches.
14:36And that's what justifies the price.
14:37Correct.
14:38You're buying a real high-end luxury vehicle that's capable in every way.
14:42Like we say, it's bespoke.
14:44So we're actually building it to the high-end by hand, in-house.
14:48We try to take care and pride in what we're building, you know.
14:51That's what it's all about.
14:52And high components, high performance components that will last a long time.
14:55So that's really nice.
14:56I love this.
14:57This is a hot rod chassis.
14:58Correct.
14:59It's super high-end.
15:00We want to make sure that we keep it.
15:01Like I said, we have to be able as a manufacturer to warranty it.
15:04So in order to do that, it takes a little bit better quality parts.
15:07So we want to make sure we use the top of the line, the best quality we can get.
15:10All right, Dan, what are we looking at here?
15:13So this is our SC31T chassis.
15:15This is a brand-new chassis.
15:17And then what we're doing is we're modifying the battery pack location and how it mounts in the truck.
15:22We're building it out from scratch so that it misses the firewall.
15:25This one has coilovers on it.
15:26QA1s.
15:27QA1s.
15:28See, there you go.
15:29Another well-known name out there.
15:30This is like a pre-fit stage, the way we've got it sitting down with the bed on it.
15:33We'll fit the cab one more time before it goes to paint, and then we'll be assembling.
15:37And this white color, is that a primer?
15:39What is that?
15:40No, so that's flat white.
15:41That's actually...
15:42Is that the final color?
15:43That is going to be the final color.
15:44So this truck was put together for SEMA show, and we're actually going back and kind of fixing
15:48some of the issues that we had with it before.
15:50Is this one going to be one of the ones that are for sale?
15:52Yeah, this one will be for sale.
15:54Well, join us next week when we come back to Southfield Classics, and we show you guys
15:59the motor setup and the battery packs.
16:02Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoating.
16:11Is brought to you by the following companies.
16:13Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
16:34With 15 seasons in the making, Sam finally brings out the legendary CR NSX.
16:48Born from a CRX with an NSX swap back in 2000, this one-of-a-kind build blends history, horsepower,
16:56and heart.
16:57A true Nopi icon reborn for the next generation.
17:02It's hard to imagine that it's been 15 seasons for this guy to finally make it on Sam's Garage.
17:08So back in 1999, Madhavi Motorsports opened up, me and my brother Arish, and we were doing
17:14Honda swaps in droves.
17:16We had done so many in the first year and a half of Madhavi Motorsports that we got bored.
17:21And so what happened was we got thinking and said, let's do something totally crazy that
17:26no one's ever done.
17:27So we got a CRX from one of our customers.
17:29I was able to get a complete NSX chunk that included the subframe, which is what the NSX
17:35engine sits in.
17:36So we took the whole unit, cut out the floor and the trunk of this car, and installed this.
17:40Back in 2000, me, John Kaufman, and Hugh Hamilton.
17:45John Kaufman and I, he was KMS Engineering.
17:47He built a lot of the cylinder heads.
17:49He was racing.
17:50He was an engine builder and machinist.
17:52Unfortunately, he is no longer with us.
17:54So he helped us build the chassis, took it back to Madhavi Motorsports.
17:58Hugh Hamilton, who is also unfortunately no longer with us, helped to wire up the whole thing.
18:04So the whole thing is wired up with Honda wiring.
18:06So we took this back out, cleaned it all up.
18:09It runs like a champ, and we're going to take it and showcase it at the show.
18:12John Pops also helped us maintain and fix the wiring on this and keep it up to date later in the years.
18:19Second decade we've had it.
18:20He is also no longer with us, unfortunately.
18:23All the talent that has helped build this car and made it so successful is no longer with us.
18:27However, Albert from UAB, that's why it says UFO by UAB, Ultimate Auto Boutique.
18:34He was one of the pioneers in fiberglass work back when the NOPE Nationals was very popular in the 2000s.
18:40People spent a lot of money back then doing fiberglass work and fusing headlights and different stuff into their cars from different model cars.
18:47So as you can see, this used to be a solid metal Honda CRX.
18:57Back in the day, because Honda Drag Racing was so big, they had one piece fiberglass front ends.
19:02So Albert took this and called me up one day and said,
19:04Sam, you know, do you think I can run with my imagination and do what I want to do?
19:07I said, you know what, Albert, do what you want to do, right?
19:09So this is what he did.
19:11He covered the front wheels.
19:12He made it wide body.
19:13He put a wide body in the rear.
19:15Cut the doors in half.
19:17Built brand new fiberglass doors that are in half.
19:20Made all the aerodynamics that you see underneath.
19:23On top, there's an icebox underneath that lid.
19:26There is a fan with two scoops.
19:28One going into the turbo.
19:29The other one going into the super intercooler.
19:31Because we did put a super intercooler along with the Mitsubishi 20G upgraded turbo on this.
19:36It made 456 wheels at 9 pounds of boost.
19:39We also had a shot of nitrous on it.
19:41Back in 2002, we ran it at Atlanta Dragway.
19:46And it ran 11.6 at 130 miles an hour.
19:51And that was when we just had nitrous on it.
19:54We took it home, put the nitrous off of it, put the turbocharger on it.
19:57So this is an iconic car.
19:59It's called the CR NSX because it's a mix between a CRX and an NSX.
20:04So, I love it.
20:06You can't find a lot of this stuff anymore.
20:08Modave Motorsports was all about doing engine swaps.
20:11We built more horsepower than anyone I know in town because of all the volumes of cars that we built.
20:15So, we're going to take this car to Echo Park Speedway.
20:19September 13th, 14th.
20:21Nopi Nationals next year, 2026.
20:24Third weekend of September.
20:25If you guys missed it this year, make sure to check out Nopi.
20:28Google it, look it up.
20:29We'll have the Nationals again in 2026.
20:31We're going to see you there.
20:32And hopefully, you guys will also see the CR NSX.
20:46Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
20:50Send us questions and feedback to info at samsgaragetv.com.
20:56From century-old racers to cutting-edge EVs and one unforgettable CR NSX.
21:03This episode celebrates the past, powers the present, and looks to the future for performance.
