00:00Imagine a time in Thailand when news travels slowly, mostly through words of mouth.
00:06But this changed in 1844 with a burst of Thailand's first newspaper.
00:11The Bangkok Recorder was founded by Dr. Dan B. Bradley, an American missionary who arrived
00:16in Siam in 1835 and quickly recognized the need for a printed medium to share information.
00:22Bradley used the newspaper to introduce modern printing techniques,
00:26educate the public and encourage curiosity about the wider world.
00:30Although it struggled financially and reached only a small segment of the population,
00:35the newspaper marked a turning point in Siam's society.
00:38It set the stage for the development of journalism in Thailand,
00:42creating a space for public discussion and the exchange of ideas beyond the royal court.
00:47Interestingly, some of Bradley's early articles explained vaccination,
00:51hygiene, and even how to build water clocks.
