00:00seems to be saying the idea that the ncaa it may be ready to allow their collegiate athletes to
00:06potentially bet on professional sports and some people may say well why why are they allowing to
00:11do you know i think that's a good question but also it makes me feel a little bit more comfortable
00:15sam knowing that if they're going to allow this to happen it feels like a lot of the safeguards
00:21that they have and the monitoring must be in place pretty well by now yeah i think that's spot on
00:26craig i think for a lot of people especially within the ncaa it's kind of been it's about time we
00:32change this rule i think a lot of the times you have across sports betting and sports gambling now
00:37rules that were written back when the mob was in charge of sports betting and now you obviously
00:42have it's a much much different environment still some shady characters out there but for the ncaa
00:47they're actually saying this is something that's going to help them identify more match fixing
00:52scandals more point shaving scandals which obviously we know has been a huge issue for
00:57them over the past year we've talked about you know men's basketball teams at fresno state we have
01:01of course the iowa baseball team and alabama baseball team but the ncaa says they don't have the resources
01:07to go after these you know small violations of a college basketball player you know betting five
01:13dollars on the nfl and quite frankly it doesn't make much sense to have that uh rule still in place
01:19now of course um you know this isn't final yet the division one uh advisory council uh voted to
01:27change this rule but it still has to be approved by the d2 council the d3 council uh which is expected
01:32to happen later this month and if that does happen it'll take effect uh november 1st but um again they
01:38say it's going to allow them to you know leverage their resources more on kind of where it the real
01:44problems are with sports betting or the real issues are with sports betting and i think for college
01:48athletes it's just you know it makes it a little easier more comfortable um to think about sports
01:54betting because you know if you're on the you know the penn state football team for example and you're
01:58told you can't bet on the nfl it's kind of just okay sports betting is taboo and stay away from it so
02:03i think it's good that we're changing and adapting these rules of course but at the same time
02:07the ncaa is definitely not endorsing hey go bet on these games it's more hey let's you know have it
02:12where you're comfortable doing it doing it responsibly of course all those things
02:15um but yeah just another one of these rules that kind of takes a long time to fix we have 39 states
02:20with legal sports betting now so um you know it moves slowly but surely but still moving
02:25you
