Households in the North East are paying more for gas and electricity under the latest Ofgem price cap, adding pressure to budgets.
Transcript
00:00Households in the North East are now paying 6.29 pence per kilowatt hour for gas, with
00:06a standing charge of 34.15 pence. Electricity costs 25.43 pence per kilowatt hour, and the
00:13standing charge is 59.86 pence a day. For people in Tyne and Weir, it's a small rise,
00:19but still one that adds pressure to monthly budgets.
00:23The latest rise follows Ofgem's quarterly review, which sets the maximum amount energy
00:27suppliers can charge for each unit of energy. The typical household will see bills go up by
00:32around 2%, bringing the annual total to about £1,755. That works out as roughly £35 extra a
00:40year compared to the previous cap. Even with the increase, bills remain around £625 lower than
00:47they were at the height of the energy crisis in early 2023. Ofgem says the change reflects higher
00:54costs of transporting energy across the network as operators adjust prices to keep supplies
00:59stable.
