iPhone 17_ Everything New
Transcript
00:00Apple recently released the new iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro.
00:06So let's take a look at everything that's changed with these models.
00:09Starting with iPhone 17, which comes in five colors.
00:12Lavender, sage green, mist blue, white, and black.
00:16While I think these shades look nicer than last year, I expect many people to be disappointed
00:21with no pink option, which we had with not only iPhone 16, but also the 15.
00:27Now the 17's design may not appear any different than last year, but there are small refinements,
00:32like a slightly larger display, moving from 6.1 inches to 6.3.
00:37This was achieved by reducing the borders around the screen.
00:40At 1.44mm, they're about 36% thinner than iPhone 16's 2.27mm screen borders.
00:47iPhone 17 is also slightly taller and narrower, with its height increasing from 5.81 inches
00:54to 5.89 inches.
00:56And its width decreasing from 2.82 inches to 2.81 inches, although this change is practically
01:02imperceptible.
01:03What you're more likely to notice is the new ProMotion display that features a 120Hz refresh
01:08rate instead of 60Hz.
01:10This is a feature we've been begging Apple to make standard across all their flagship phones,
01:15and this year, they finally did it.
01:17ProMotion makes text look sharper while scrolling, animation smoother, and gives the interface a
01:22more responsive feel.
01:24It also has a variable refresh rate as low as 1Hz, enabling another feature coming to the
01:28base iPhone for the first time, always-on functionality.
01:32While in sleep mode, iPhone 17 dims the lock screen while keeping its content visible, like
01:37the wallpaper, time, date, widgets, and notifications.
01:41You can even customize what's shown under settings.
01:43iPhone 17 also matches the peak brightness of pricier models, receiving a 50% boost from
01:502,000 nits on iPhone 16 to 3,000 nits this year.
01:54This is only achievable while outdoors, and lasts a limited amount of time to prevent overheating.
02:00Apple also added an anti-reflective coating to this year's iPhones, reducing glare by about
02:0433%, which should also help make the screen easier to see in bright outdoor conditions.
02:11Now let's talk about the A19 chip.
02:13It delivers a decent performance boost over last year's A18 chip, with 20% faster GPU
02:19speeds, 11% faster single-core CPU speeds, and 9% faster multi-core CPU speeds.
02:26Of course, these gains will be even larger if you're upgrading from an older iPhone 14
02:30or 15.
02:32Now let's get into the cameras, which received significant upgrades this year.
02:36After 6 years with a 12MP selfie camera, it's now been increased to 18MP, and includes some
02:42clever engineering.
02:44Instead of a typical rectangular sensor, Apple gave this year's iPhones a square selfie camera
02:49sensor, which is technically 24MP.
02:53But instead of using all those pixels, Apple's using the flexibility of a large square sensor
02:58to enable some new functionality.
03:00Like center stage, which automatically keeps you in frame during a FaceTime or conference call.
03:06But what's even cooler is the ability to take landscape photos without rotating your phone.
03:11This also gives the selfie camera a wider angle, and automatically senses people trying to fit
03:16in frame, and zooms out to include them.
03:19Finally, the jump from 12 to 18MP just makes regular selfies look much sharper and higher quality.
03:26As for the rear cameras, Apple made an even more dramatic upgrade, with the ultra-wide lens
03:31moving from 12MP to 48MP.
03:34That means there won't be a huge quality difference between photos taken with either
03:38lens, since they're both now 48MP.
03:41Now let's talk about iPhone 17's battery.
03:44Compared to the 16, it's 3.7% larger, at 3,692 mAh.
03:50But its offline video playback numbers are 36% higher, achieving 30 hours compared to 22 last
03:57year.
03:58Apple also increased its charging speed, going from 0 to 50% in just 20 minutes with a 40-watt
04:04charger.
04:05That's 33% faster than iPhone 16, and actually matches the speed of the 17 Pro.
04:11Finally, Apple's giving iPhone 17 twice as much storage as iPhone 16, at 256GB instead
04:17of 128, and offering a 512GB option for $200 more.
04:23The best part is iPhone 17's price is the same as last year, at $799.
04:29Now this isn't cheap, but in my opinion it makes iPhone 17 the best value model ever,
04:35since it has almost all the premium features of last year's 16 Pro for the price of a
04:40standard base model iPhone.
04:42Something else that's an incredible value are the motion presets I use from our channel
04:46partner, MotionVFX.
04:48A lot of people have emailed me over the years asking how I make my videos.
04:52Most high-quality infographics and visual effects like these are very time-consuming to build
04:57manually, but MotionVFX makes this easy with their drag-and-drop presets.
05:02My most used plugin pack has been MKeynote, and this updated version has become even better,
05:08with a fresh appearance, new liquid glass effects, and even more infographic presets which is
05:13really useful for my videos.
05:15I've actually been using this line graph preset quite a bit, and I love how customizable
05:19it is.
05:20I can change the font, the colors, choose the number of segments I want, adjust the glint effect,
05:26and even remove the circle end caps.
05:28If I want to recreate a graph like this showing Apple's stock price, I can just overlay this
05:33MKeynote2 preset, drag the peaks and valleys to precisely match the original, change the values,
05:39and I'm done.
05:40What I just did in a few seconds used to take me 15 to 20 minutes to build manually.
05:46But that's just one preset.
05:47MKeynote2 contains over 100 presets, including diagrams, progress bars, lists, titles, callouts,
05:55descriptions, backgrounds, transitions, this liquid magnifier which I love, split screen
06:02effects, and more.
06:04These high quality presets not only make your videos look professional, but they save you
06:08an incredible amount of editing time.
06:10So check out MKeynote2 now at MotionVFX.com, or by tapping the link in the comments.
06:16Now let's move on to what I think is the most exciting model of the year, iPhone Air.
06:21Not iPhone 17 Air, which makes me wonder if next year's replacement will be called iPhone
06:26Air 2, or iPhone Air 2nd generation, or maybe there won't be one.
06:30But anyway, iPhone Air is the thinnest model ever.
06:33At just 5.6mm, it beats the previous record set by iPhone 6, which was 6.9mm.
06:40That makes iPhone Air almost 19% thinner.
06:43Now the biggest concern people had about a phone this thin was bending, and it's safe
06:47to say Apple laid those concerns to rest.
06:50Because in an interview, Apple's marketing president Greg Joswiak let the hosts try bending
06:55the device, and they couldn't.
06:58Apple actually put a lot of effort into strengthening its chassis.
07:01iPhone Air has a titanium frame which makes it incredibly rigid, but it's also designed
07:05to withstand some amount of flex and then return to its original form.
07:10According to Allstate's bend test, iPhone Air can withstand 190 pounds of pressure, almost
07:16matching the 17 Pro, which achieved 200 pounds.
07:20iPhone Air is also incredibly light.
07:22At 165 grams, it's 20% lighter than the 17 Pro, despite having a bigger screen.
07:28And let's talk about that screen for a minute, because the dynamic island is actually positioned
07:32slightly lower on it than on other models, and it's oriented in the opposite direction,
07:38with the selfie camera being on the left side instead of the right.
07:42This is likely for space optimization reasons, because Apple moved several components, including
07:46the chip inside the larger camera bump.
07:49But the screen's functionality is the same as other models, with ProMotion, always-on
07:53functionality, 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, and the anti-reflective coating.
07:58Plus, its borders are just as thin as 17 Pro, at 1.44 millimeters.
08:04This is a theme you'll see Apple mention a lot.
08:07That iPhone Air is basically a Pro-level device in a super thin and light enclosure.
08:12And that is true in some ways, but definitely not in others.
08:16For example, its A19 Pro chip, which appears to be the same one used in the 17 Pro models,
08:22is actually a binned version, which means it has 5 GPU cores instead of 6, resulting in
08:27performance that's 10-15% worse.
08:30Also, the Air's compact design means it heats up faster under load, and therefore throttles
08:36performance sooner.
08:38Apple also gave this model their new C1X modem, which focuses on high power efficiency while
08:44delivering decent wireless speeds.
08:47But the 17 Pro has a more advanced modem that delivers the best speeds in the industry today.
08:53The good news is iPhone Air has the same 18 megapixel selfie camera with all the same features
08:57as the other models.
09:00But its rear camera system is a big downgrade.
09:03It uses just one lens, the same approach Apple took with their budget iPhone 16e.
09:09This is disappointing, since cameras consistently rank as one of the most important features
09:13to smartphone customers.
09:15And considering iPhone Air's $1,000 price, this type of rear camera setup feels very limited.
09:22All it has is a cropped 2x optical zoom.
09:25And that's it.
09:26No ultra-wide angle, no telephoto, and because it's a single lens, portrait mode photos have
09:32less accurate edge detection and just don't look as good.
09:36Luckily, the biggest concern people had about iPhone Air, its battery life, turned out to
09:40be a pleasant surprise.
09:42Its 27 hours of offline video playback is only 10% less than iPhone 17, and actually matches
09:48last year's 16 Pro.
09:50Real-world battery tests have proved this, with iPhone Air achieving 12 hours and 2 minutes
09:55of internet browsing, only about 6% less than iPhone 17.
10:00That's actually pretty incredible, considering iPhone Air's physical battery is 15% smaller.
10:06Where it falls behind, though, is charging speed, going from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes instead
10:12of 20 minutes like every other model this year.
10:15But again, it's not all bad news.
10:17Apple did give iPhone Air 12GB of RAM, which is more than the 8GB last year.
10:23Finally, let's move on to iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, which, for the first time ever, only
10:29come in three colors.
10:30Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, and Silver.
10:33There's no space gray or black, and lots of people are upset about it.
10:37I'm just upset that we went from four color options to three, which is usually a sign
10:42of cost-cutting.
10:43Now between the 17 Pro and Pro Max, there are just three differences.
10:47Their displays, at 6.3 and 6.9 inches.
10:50Their batteries, at 33 and 39 hours of offline video playback.
10:55And their screen borders, at 1.44 and 1.36 millimeters.
11:00Compared to last year, the most noticeable difference is the rear design.
11:04Not only is the camera bump 82% larger, but Apple decided to extend the metal frame to cover
11:10the camera bump.
11:11With a glass rectangle at the bottom to allow for MagSafe and wireless charging.
11:16This has proven to be a controversial change for many reasons, which I covered in my previous
11:20video.
11:21But honestly, the appearance of 17 Pro doesn't bother me.
11:25It's the switch from titanium to aluminum that I just don't find acceptable.
11:30Now Apple says they made the switch since aluminum is lighter and better for thermal conductivity.
11:35But it's also cheaper, and softer, and easier to damage, which we've already seen happening.
11:41Now the display is the same, except for slightly thicker bezels on the Pro Max, a higher peak
11:46outdoor brightness of 3000 nits, and an anti-reflective coating.
11:51Now let's talk about how the A19 Pro chip performs in these phones.
11:55Unlike iPhone Air, the 17 Pro models are big.
11:59Probably a little larger and thicker than last year.
12:01Paired with a new vapor chamber cooling system, heat is moved quickly away from the chip, which
12:06has been repositioned near the center of the phone.
12:09That means no matter the task, 17 Pro will run cooler in your hand than 16 Pro.
12:14But this becomes really useful during intensive tasks, since these new models have about 40%
12:20better sustained performance.
12:23What that means is, if you're playing a graphics-heavy video game, 17 Pro won't throttle as much
12:29or as soon as 16 Pro, letting you enjoy 40% better performance after gaming for about an
12:34hour or two.
12:35In fact, 17 Pro's throttle performance actually beats the 16 Pro's peak performance.
12:42That's a big advantage only available on these 17 Pro models.
12:46The 18MP center stage camera has been added, and the previous 12MP telephoto lens has finally
12:52been upgraded to 48MP, resulting in much higher quality photos while using the zoom function.
12:59And this is particularly important on the 17 Pro models, since they also have an updated
13:04tetraprism design to accommodate 8x optical zoom, and 40x digital zoom.
13:10Previously, using the maximum zoom resulted in some really poor quality photos, especially
13:16in low light conditions, since iPhone wouldn't switch to the telephoto lens at all due to its
13:21poor low light performance.
13:23Instead it was using a digital zoom on the main 48MP lens.
13:27So having those 48MPs on the telephoto lens means a dramatic improvement in low light, zoomed
13:33in photos.
13:35Now let's talk about battery life, which increased 6 hours for both the 17 Pro and Pro Max, at
13:40a total of 33 and 39 hours of offline video playback.
13:45Phone charging speed has become 33% faster, going from 0 to 50% in 20 minutes, but only
13:51if you're using Apple's 40W dynamic power adapter, which uses dynamic power switching
13:57to regulate voltage, giving the phone more power up to 60 watts when it's safe to do
14:02so, and reducing voltage as the battery fills up.
14:06This allows for faster charging without risking excessive heat stress on the battery.
14:10These models have also been upgraded to 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB with the 16 Pro, although
14:17Apple did implement another price hike, from $999 last year to $1,099 today.
14:24Which is another reason why using cheaper aluminum on the 17 Pro just didn't seem right.
14:30Now people are shrugging this off by saying, well, Apple doubled the storage capacity from
14:34128 to 256GB, so the higher price is okay.
14:39But remember, iPhone 17 also received double storage for the same price as iPhone 16.
14:45Also the markup Apple puts on their storage upgrades are outrageously high.
14:51Estimates put the number at 300 to 400%.
14:54That means when you see them do these price hikes while doubling the storage, it's just
14:58Apple forcing us to pay their insane markups to help pad their bottom line.
15:03Alright, so that's everything new with the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17 Pro models.
15:10This is Greg with Apple Explained.
15:11Thanks for watching till the end, and I'll see you in the next video.
