00:30Tennessee Titans have arrived in the desert desperate for a first win against the Cardinals team looking to turn the page after back-to-back divisional losses.
00:39And with that, we say welcome to the NFL on CBS alongside Adam Archuleta.
00:43I'm Spiro Ditas. We'll hear from Aditi Kikabwala in just a couple of minutes.
00:47Archie can feel the urgency level for Jonathan Gannon's Cardinals.
00:50And meantime, Tennessee, all the talk around their embattled head coach Brian Callahan.
00:54Well, look, Spiro, there are two teams in different places, but the urgency is real for both.
00:59But for the Cardinals, they're sitting at 0-2 in the division that's looking to be among one of the best in football.
01:05And for Tennessee, they're 0-4, and they're swimming in a sea of negativity.
01:09They need to put four quarters in all three phases and give them something to be proud of.
01:14Arch, what about these two quarterbacks? A couple of number one overall picks ready to do battle.
01:17Kyler Murray for the Cardinals and Cam Ward finally looking to break through.
01:21Well, listen, for Cam Ward, you know he's riding that rookie quarterback roller coaster.
01:25Last week, he's 10-26, and for the second time this season, under 50% completion percentage.
01:32He's got to be better. The team's got to be better.
01:34For Kyler Murray, it's been a slow start to the season, a slow start in his last game,
01:38but he really came to life in that fourth quarter and gave them a chance to win at the end.
01:42The table is set. Cardinals and the Titans ready to get it on here in Glendale.
01:48We'll have the opening kick next on CBS.
01:54Matt, walk us through that offense.
01:56JB, they're eating a ton of clock thanks to their freshly beefed-up line.
01:59The QB's waiting for the D to bite so he can slice them up.
02:02Wait a sec, are they talking about food?
02:04He really put some extra mustard on that pigskin.
02:07Right in the bread basket.
02:08Ooh, baby, the whole offense is cooking.
02:10Yep, and this way, they can chew up that clock.
02:12This is crazy. Football is not selling food.
02:16Get a free turkey and provolone with orders of $15 or more from Jersey Mike's right now on Uber Eats.
02:24CBS Sports welcomes you to the following presentation of the National Football League.
02:37Just about ready in Glendale for the Cardinals and the Titans as we welcome in Aditi Kikabala.
02:42The Cardinals come into this game off of what head coach Jonathan Gannon told us was a mini-reset.
02:49Yes, last Thursday night, they suffered their second consecutive walk-off last.
02:54But Gannon called it a shot of an adrenaline because it showed the Cardinals how close they are to beating good teams.
03:01He and his coordinators used the bonus weekend to come up with two specific improvements for every player.
03:08Things like leverage and pad level.
03:10He's pleased with what he saw in practice.
03:12Now, he said, he hopes to see it on this field.
03:16Yeah, Didi, they took full use of that little mini-buy with their previous game on a Thursday night.
03:23And those back-to-back losses, a little bit more costly, Arch, in the division.
03:27Walk-off last-second field goals, as Didi mentioned.
03:30But all four of their games have been one possession.
03:33How quickly can they turn the page against this winless Tennessee Titans team?
03:38As the Titans want to toss, they defer.
03:40And so Bam May, who may get a little bit of a bump in his running back role today with the return.
03:47So here comes Kyler Murray.
03:49Arch, you know about their top two backs now down.
03:51So the question is, how does that affect their play calling?
03:54Well, listen, for Kyler Murray, to me, it's about starting fast and finishing the entire game.
04:00He's only 185 passing yards per game this year.
04:05He came alive at the end of that game against Seattle.
04:07I would love, we haven't seen a really hot, fast start for Murray in the offense.
04:12I would love to see him get off to a fast start.
04:16Cardinals begin at their own 33-yard line.
04:24Can they get this running attack going?
04:25This is Michael Carter, who was on their practice squad up until this week.
04:31But, of course, James Conner done for the year.
04:33No Trey Benson.
04:34And so now, how does Drew Petsing handle the play calling in this offense?
04:38Well, listen, coming into this season, they were built to run the football behind their offensive line.
04:43And James Conner at running back.
04:45No James Conner.
04:46Now the backup, Trey Benson, is out.
04:48And they're mixing up their offensive line a little bit, bringing back Will Hernandez,
04:52giving his first action in over a year.
04:54I do believe they should transition to more of a passing first offense.
05:01All kinds of movement pre-snap.
05:04Multiple flags.
05:05Will Hernandez, the ACL tear, week five of last season.
05:09So he makes his triumphant return to this offense.
05:12But they lose Evan Brown.
05:14False start.
05:15Offense number 74.
05:17Five-yard penalty.
05:18Second down.
05:19And there is Isaiah Adams, who moves from right guard to left guard with Evan Brown out today.
05:25Arch dealing with the hamstring injury.
05:27So all kinds of moving parts in front of Kyler.
05:29Yeah, and they really feel like, you know, Will Hernandez plays the right guard spot.
05:33And Isaiah Adams, who had been playing that guard, going over to the left side,
05:37maybe giving him a little bit of a reset over there with Paris Johnson.
05:40Murray to the air for the first time, and he completes.
05:45This will be a first-down connection to one of his stud targets, Trey McBride, a pickup of 10.
05:52McBride has been just a complete star for this team.
05:55But can they get Marvin Harrison going?
05:57And are they going to unleash Kyler or something we've been touching on already here with this offense?
06:01Listen, you know that Kyler Murray is going to look to Trey McBride first.
06:06There you see Marvin Harrison, Jr.
06:08I'd love to see them get him early, feed him some targets, get his confidence going.
06:13But there's no mistaking that this passing game goes through Trey McBride and Marvin Harrison.
06:19Murray on first and 10 over the middle.
06:22He completes.
06:23This will be close to another first down.
06:25This is Michael Carter.
06:27Arch, no stranger to the spotlight.
06:30Carter, who began his career with the Jets, now thrust into a bigger role.
06:34Remember, he started their last two games of the season last year with both Connor and Benson down.
06:39So full faith in Carter and Di Mercado behind him.
06:43Yeah, Di Mercado, he's the third down guy, and that's really where he excels.
06:47But, you know, they're really excited to see what Michael Carter brings and what Bam Knight brings.
06:51I believe it's going to be a situation where they see who's the hot hand,
06:55and that's who's going to get the touches throughout the game.
06:58Michael Carter, I don't think he got it.
07:01Sebastian Joseph Day, he put a little bit of a hesitation arch from Carter.
07:05It looked like he had a little bit of a crease.
07:08But unable to get it, and it's going to be a third and two as he loses a yard in the play.
07:17Arizona offense, eight straight games without an opening drive touchdown.
07:21That's the longest drought in the NFL.
07:25Team right behind him in that category is actually Tennessee.
07:34Titans rush for it, and here they come.
07:36Pocket muddies.
07:37Murray the escape route is.
07:39Kyler's going to run for it.
07:41Did he get it with the extension of the official safe first down?
07:44That's the magic of Murray right there.
07:47Everyone covered down the field, and he's able to move the sticks.
07:50Well, this is the guy, number 98, right up the middle, that you're going to have to account for.
07:56Jeffrey Simmons, you know, last week, really the entire season,
08:00playing as one of the best defensive tackles in the game.
08:03And completely can wreck an offense single-handedly, and key third down.
08:09He gets up inside, pushes the pocket, and then you see Kyler Murray use his legs to pick up that first down.
08:14I would love to see a little bit more running and a little bit more creation in the passing game on the run for Murray in this game.
08:22Murray goes play action, turns his back to the defense for a moment.
08:25Murray launches one towards the end zone.
08:28It is caught!
08:30Marvin Harrison!
08:34There is a flag down at the 27-yard line.
08:38If it stands, it's a 44-yard touchdown strike.
08:51Illegal contact.
08:53Defense number 18.
08:55That penalty is defined as all the players are touched on.
08:58Arch, these are the home run strikes that everyone in this city have been waiting for between these two.
09:07And how good must this feel for Marvin Harrison?
09:10There's been a lot of talk about him, the way he started that game in the Seattle game,
09:15but then he came back and he really finished strong.
09:17Just a beautiful job of winning on the double move, and this is why you go out and you draft him.
09:24Officials don't want to replace this.
09:27They're going to mark Harrison short of the goal line.
09:33Spiro, this is why you go out and you draft him at number four, to make plays like this.
09:37One-on-one, isolated.
09:40Look at the double move.
09:41Armour Davis, eyes in the backfield, interference.
09:44And now you've got to go up and win with two defensive backs.
09:47Two-on-one, be strong at the catch point, and try to bring it down.
09:51Almost got him a touchdown.
09:5211-17 on the game block for you.
09:54So you can see from that vantage point, Body Park hitting short of the goal line.
10:00Xavier Woods was the man on the coverage, and so they will mark him down just inside the one-yard line.
10:06But the impact of that play still felt.
10:11Remember how bad Harrison started that Thursday night game last week
10:15before turning it up in the second half, trying to bring the Cardinals back?
10:18And what was an eventual comeback bid that came up short?
10:23So first and goal, long setback here is Carter.
10:29Fake handoff.
10:31Murray going to throw across his body in zone, and it is incomplete.
10:37And Arch, as you know, this part of the field, that backside starts to tighten up a little bit.
10:41Everything constricted in the passing game from the quarterback's perspective, as it will be second and goal.
10:46And Spear, I want to go back to that play, to Marvin Harrison Jr., and talking about this passing game.
10:51There's no foul on the play.
10:53There's no second down.
10:55You know, they wanted to get more explosiveness in this offense.
10:58They've been a short, dink-and-dunk offense.
11:00And when I look back into when Kyler Murray was at his best, that 2021 season,
11:05where in the first seven, eight games he was playing like an MVP candidate,
11:09a lot of his plays down the field was when he got outside the pocket,
11:12and he was able to create and make those plays down the field.
11:15And to me, that's one of the superpowers that you have in a guy like Kyler Murray,
11:20and I would love to see much more of that from this offense.
11:22That's Kelvin Beecham, who's coming to the game now,
11:34and lines up with the left side, eligible receiver for the Cardinals.
11:38So a little bit of confusion here.
11:41Number 68 is the eligible receiver.
11:44Direction, not 69.
11:45Number 68 is eligible.
11:46All right, our referee Sean Smith getting that thing cleared up.
11:52I don't think the fans aren't appreciated it with the Cardinals over the football.
11:56You know, this hopefully Drew Petsing didn't have a tackle-eligible play called right here,
12:02because now the element of surprise, if that was the case,
12:07probably isn't going to work against his defense.
12:11Held off here.
12:13And that Tennessee front making the initial stick.
12:16There is a penalty flag thrown.
12:18Cedric Gray, who's coming in off a 17-tackle game, was among the tacklers.
12:27Offside, defense lined up in the neutral zone.
12:30Number 93, half the distance, Philly.
12:32He played second down.
12:34I couldn't quite see exactly whose helmet that was.
12:40It might have been Jihad Ward, number 53.
12:43His helmet, you know, lined up in the neutral zone.
12:45Oh, it's a clear breakdown by the defense, not something that they were hoping for in that spot.
12:55So second in goal, and marked at half the distance.
12:58Back to the ground game, and they are in with Carter.
13:05So the initial touchdown on the long pass marked down at the 1.
13:09They have to work a little bit harder, and it's Michael Carter back into the mix,
13:13getting the Cardinals our first points.
13:16Well, you get a lot of beef inside.
13:18You get Tip Ryman playing fullback, and then Will Hernandez is going to wrap up inside,
13:25and Carter is just going to follow it.
13:28Really nice surge in there by those two lead blockers,
13:30and the Cardinals fast start exactly what they were looking for.
13:35Eight plays, 67 yards, just over four minutes,
13:40and that ends that longest drought of eight straight games without an opening draft touchdown
13:45for the Arizona Cardinals.
13:48And aren't you just the right kind of balance that you're looking for?
13:50Long pass, the 43-yarder Murray to Harrison,
13:54and that got them in business with Michael Carter.
13:58Point after here by Chad Rylan.
14:00And the kick is good to make it 7-0 Cardinals.
14:09Well, can they get Marvin Harrison Jr. going?
14:12A big second half last week as he starts his day with some fireworks here in Glendale.
14:18And then it's Carter banging it in for the Cardinals early stages on CBS.
14:25Great start for the Cardinals.
14:27They play 72 yards, just over four minutes.
14:29And Michael Carter goes from practice squad star March to their lead running back,
14:35a role that he is quite familiar with after joining this team a couple of years ago.
14:39Chad Rylan to put it back in play
14:40as we will get our first look at Cam Ward in this Tennessee Titans offense.
14:46And we're going to play it here.
14:48This is DK from the goal line.
14:49Crosses the 25, and they're going to mark him out of bounds.
14:53At the 27-yard line.
14:58Arch, here comes Cam Ward.
14:59You mentioned a bit of a mixed bag.
15:01One thing we know, they haven't protected him well.
15:03No quarterback has been sacked more through the first four weeks.
15:06Well, the good news to that is if there was any silver lining from the offensive performance of last week
15:12is that they are coming off their best game in protecting Cam Ward and limiting those sacks.
15:17In every game this year, the sack number has come down.
15:21Now, collectively around him, they've all got to play their best game
15:25and put together a consistent product on the field.
15:29Let's go!
15:31Titans begin at their own 30.
15:33This is Tony Pollard, who has been the workhorse.
15:36The running back has had a higher percentage of his team's carry so far this season,
15:40but they do get some help back today.
15:43Tajay Spears as they desperately try to get this ground game arch going.
15:46If you're looking at disappointments this season, it's the Tennessee Titans in their run game.
15:50Only 87 yards per game.
15:52And while you look at the Arizona Cardinals on defense,
15:54they've done a pretty good job stopping the run.
15:57But last week against the Seattle Seahawks, 155 yards.
16:02Seahawks really attacked them on the outside in their Tennessee.
16:06Really nice start to their run game.
16:13Good push from that Arizona front.
16:16Looked like it was Keem Davis-Keithor making for his contact.
16:20Pollard was crunched, and it's going to be a third and short.
16:23This is something that Cam Ward really talked about,
16:26and really everybody on the offensive staff.
16:28There's Brian Callahan right there, the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
16:31You know, they're not a good third-down offense,
16:33but a big reason for that is because they were so bad on first and second down.
16:39Putting them in extremely long-yardage situations,
16:42this is something that should be manageable.
16:44They should be able to pick up, look for a sneak.
16:47Run play, and this is going to be a first-down Tennessee.
16:50Julius Chestnut, who has moved up in the running back rotation
16:54with the absence of Spears up until today.
16:57They pick up four, and Arch, just to your point,
16:59no team had had a worse third-down in distance than Tennessee.
17:04Yeah, there's Bo Hardegrees' second straight week
17:06since taking over the play-calling duties for Brian Callahan.
17:09And he's, listen, it's not an easy thing to do taking over at midseason,
17:14and not only is he trying to figure out his process,
17:16but he's also trying to figure out what is Cam Ward,
17:20and what is he like, and how can he settle him down?
17:23A couple of hard fakes.
17:25Cardinals giving Chase Ward.
17:27He's got all that athleticism trying to wiggle free.
17:30Everyone looked like they were covered down the field.
17:32Dante Stills, who's making the start today for the absent.
17:35And Darius Robinson was giving Chase.
17:39And to Callahan, making that tough decision, Arch,
17:42four weeks into his second season to relinquish the play-calling duties
17:45to try to give himself more of a global feel
17:48that everything that's on his plate is the head coach.
17:56What is Hardegrees' call here as he looks down at that play sheet,
17:59second and eight, as they mark them down now,
18:02just inside the 145-yard line.
18:05Three wide receivers for Tennessee.
18:09Ward slings it far side of the field, and it is complete.
18:13Chimerae-Pique makes his first catch.
18:16Let's feel something as simple as that,
18:18and I know they didn't pick it up.
18:19It's still third and three,
18:21but just getting the simple, quick game,
18:23and the timing aspect to this offense.
18:25Here's the second, third down in a row.
18:27Now you're sitting here.
18:28First one is third and less than one.
18:30Now you're sitting here at third and three.
18:32They're really good to see early connection with his wide receiver
18:36as they try to pick up this third down.
18:39Their average down and distance on third down,
18:42third and 8.85 entering today.
18:46Worst of any team in the league.
18:48So to Arch's point, a good start.
18:50This is Spears, his first touch.
18:52Spears.
18:53What did Cam Ward tell us yesterday in our conversation
18:56about Superman's back?
18:58Spears, of course, had that terrific rookie season
19:00a couple years ago.
19:01Last year, injuries took a little bit of a step back
19:04with just a significant part of their offense.
19:06They had a slow start to last year,
19:08but really as the season went along,
19:11really he started to hit his stride,
19:12especially as a wide receiver out of the backfield.
19:15And to your point, Cam Ward's saying that
19:17everybody in practice really noticed the fresh legs,
19:20and they really expect him to provide a huge spark
19:23to the offense.
19:24Tony Pollard chips away,
19:27bangs his way inside that Cardinals 40.
19:29Let's get our first NFL Today update
19:31to New York and Adam Schein.
19:34Monster win for the Broncos
19:35as they get one in Philly.
19:38This is going to be a first-round run.
19:39Pollard.
19:40And one of the more impressive opening drives
19:43of the season for this Tennessee Titans team, Arch,
19:46as they try to put it all together.
19:48Finally, Zach Carter, the tackle.
19:51It's a run of 11.
19:52And this is a defense, Arch,
19:53that is top 10 in a number of categories,
19:55but they've got some missing pieces.
19:57No Max Melton, a lace scratch.
19:59They just added him yesterday to the injury report.
20:01Yeah, and we'll talk about the secondary
20:03as this goes on,
20:04but right now,
20:05just as we set up in the beginning of the game,
20:07you've got to really like how your run game
20:10has operated against this defense
20:12if you're Tennessee.
20:12Cam Ward on the rollout here.
20:15Everyone covered.
20:17Good news for the Cardinals, Arch.
20:19Will Johnson is back.
20:21Johnson missing the last two games,
20:22so they missed one corner starter,
20:25but they get one back.
20:27And right now playing on their heels
20:28against this Tennessee offense.
20:29Well, listen,
20:30this is what you want to see.
20:32We mentioned earlier at the top of the show
20:34how there's so much negativity right now
20:37around the Tennessee Titans,
20:38and that there's one thing
20:39that you've seen from their offense.
20:41They haven't had consistency.
20:43They've, at times,
20:44they've had good plays,
20:45but they've gone backwards.
20:46So far in this drive,
20:47outside of really sitting here
20:49at second long,
20:51they've really operated their offense
20:52as good as they have this year.
20:54Mm, Wildcat here.
20:56So Hardegre goes in his bag of tricks.
20:58Direct snap taken by Spears.
21:00Excellent pursuit
21:01by that Cardinals defense
21:03as Keytrail Clark
21:05thrust into a much bigger role today
21:06with the absence of Melton
21:08and Spears struck down
21:10after a run of three.
21:11Yeah, we know,
21:11we talked about the secondary
21:13for the Arizona Cardinals
21:15and the problems
21:16that they've had at corner
21:17and all the injuries
21:18and all that.
21:18Keytrail Clark, really,
21:20well, he was flying around.
21:21He played a great game last week,
21:23a physical game
21:24last week against Seattle.
21:25Now, as you said,
21:26this is their first,
21:27Spears, third and long of the game.
21:30The Cardinals,
21:31they're not a very big blitz team.
21:33They like to try to confuse
21:34the quarterback
21:35with their coverages
21:36rather than bring
21:37a lot of pressure
21:38on third down.
21:39Cardinals showing blitz.
21:40They instead rush forward
21:41over the middle
21:42and a little crosser
21:43and it's incomplete.
21:46Alec Io Manor,
21:48the rookie,
21:49who's off to a good start.
21:50The fourth round pick out
21:51of Stanford,
21:51unable to squeeze it
21:52in traffic.
21:53Well, you like this release.
21:54You can't really ask
21:55much more.
21:56He gets the proper separation.
21:58There's a tight,
21:59tight little window
22:00and it looked like
22:01just,
22:03just a little bit too much
22:05and he only gets
22:06his fingertips on it.
22:08A little bit better,
22:09more accurate throw
22:10and that would have been
22:11a first down.
22:12That's where Io Manor
22:13has been his best,
22:14right around the red zone
22:15as Joey Sly,
22:17he's been in one of the worst
22:18stretches of his career.
22:19Four straight missed field goals,
22:21a couple of which
22:21were really long
22:23and he turns the page
22:24quickly here in Glendale.
22:26So a really impressive
22:28game-opening drive
22:29for Brian Callahan's offense
22:31results in three points.
22:36Well, you can always count
22:37on Sundays
22:38with the NFL on CBS
22:39and streaming on Paramount+.
22:42So both teams arch
22:43with impressive extended
22:45game-opening drives,
22:4810-play drive for the Titans
22:50that turns into three points.
22:53They're really dealing
22:54with some of their issues
22:54on third down
22:55and their running game
22:56at the start.
22:59Listen,
23:00you gotta love
23:01if you're Arizona
23:02how you started out
23:03this game,
23:04getting an explosive play.
23:06And for Tennessee,
23:07I know they didn't come out
23:08with a touchdown,
23:09but just ending that drive
23:10was a chance to kick
23:11and get points
23:11out of that drive.
23:13There's really a lot
23:13to build off
23:14if you're the Titans.
23:17Joey Sly,
23:18and this one is gonna land
23:20in the end zone
23:21as Greg Dortch
23:24will take a knee.
23:25Let's go downstairs
23:26to a beating.
23:26Guys,
23:27I was watching
23:27Marvin Harrison Jr.
23:28on the sideline.
23:29Let me tell you,
23:30his demeanor
23:30was completely different
23:32than when we were here
23:33three weeks ago.
23:35He was smiling,
23:35he was laughing.
23:36This is exactly
23:37what Kyler Murray told us
23:38he saw from him
23:40this week.
23:40He said he was
23:41way more free.
23:42And that's what
23:43Jonathan Gannon said,
23:44that he wants him
23:45to have some juice
23:46and some confidence
23:47after that big touchdown
23:48last week.
23:49He's told Harrison Jr.,
23:51you can't control
23:52the hype
23:53or the expectations,
23:54so go control
23:55your pad level.
23:57And the talent level,
23:58indeed,
23:58is clear
23:58for everyone to see.
24:00How does the young man
24:02psychologically
24:03put some of the
24:04struggles behind him?
24:05What a great start
24:06for Harrison so far.
24:08And Cedric Cray,
24:09the tackle of Carter
24:10and Arch,
24:10that's a big part
24:11of what this season is.
24:12Kyler Murray,
24:13year seven,
24:14all the pressure
24:14on his shoulders.
24:15You go out and spend
24:16the number four overall
24:17pick on a receiver,
24:18you need him to be
24:18a star quickly.
24:19Listen,
24:20the way I see it
24:21is it's the most
24:22important relationship,
24:23it's the most
24:24important aspect
24:25that they have
24:26in this offense.
24:27Somehow,
24:28someway,
24:28the connection,
24:30the chemistry,
24:30the relationship
24:31between Kyler Murray
24:32and Marvin Harrison Jr.,
24:34it's got to happen
24:35and it's got to happen now.
24:36They need him
24:38to be that guy.
24:39They need to feed him
24:40at least ten times a game.
24:42Back shoulder.
24:44And boy,
24:44the combination
24:45is on target
24:46here at the start.
24:47Harrison
24:47able to reach back.
24:50Back shoulder
24:51throw by Murray.
24:52They ring him up
24:52for 20.
24:54It's plays like this.
24:56When you have him
24:57101 as an isolated receiver,
25:00that's why you go draft
25:01a big X receiver
25:02like Marvin Harrison Jr.
25:04They've got to be able
25:05to see those matchups
25:06and exploit that matchup.
25:08And there's the chemistry.
25:09How is the defensive
25:10back playing him?
25:11Is he playing on top?
25:12Hit him on the back shoulder.
25:14Is he playing down low?
25:15Go ahead and take him deep.
25:16Those are the types
25:18of things
25:18that you need to see
25:19more consistently
25:20out of both
25:21of those players.
25:23If I set it down
25:24from the 42,
25:26they'll bounce it
25:26to the outside
25:27with Carter.
25:29Looking spry
25:29and agile
25:30here at the start.
25:32All the touch,
25:33all the talk Arch
25:34about maybe Harrison.
25:35Remember,
25:36last year
25:36he almost had
25:37900 receiving yards.
25:38He was no slouch,
25:39but again,
25:39just the massive expectations
25:41and almost identical numbers
25:43to his pop
25:44through 21 games
25:46in his career.
25:46I think it's no coincidence
25:47that in Senior's third season
25:50he got Peyton Manning
25:51as a quarterback.
25:51And listen,
25:52I played against
25:53that offense, Spiro,
25:54and I knew
25:55the challenges
25:56that that offense
25:58presented itself.
25:58I'll finish up
25:59after this play.
26:00where he goes play action
26:06on second and three.
26:07Fires complete.
26:09Right back to the left.
26:10It's Harrison.
26:12That's going to get him
26:12inside the red zone.
26:14Tackled at the 19.
26:15They pick up 16 more.
26:17Spiro,
26:17as I talk about
26:18that offense
26:19with Peyton Manning
26:19and Marvin Harrison Sr.,
26:21the magic of that offense
26:23was really the chemistry
26:24between both of those players.
26:26It's the best chemistry
26:27I think I've ever seen
26:28in the National Football League.
26:30It was so good
26:31in the way they felt defenses
26:33and the way defense have played.
26:35They're almost unstoppable.
26:37And to me,
26:38you know,
26:39that's what you need to have.
26:40That kind of a relationship
26:41is what you need to have
26:42between quarterback
26:43and wide receiver.
26:44Hard fake from Murray.
26:49Goes near side.
26:50This is Dorich.
26:51Slips the initial tackle
26:53and then he pays the price
26:54at the 15-yard line.
26:56And Arch,
26:56you can think of
26:57Drew Petsing's offense here
26:58the last three years.
27:00They've been really good
27:00in the run game.
27:01Not so much this year.
27:03Now without Conor and Benson,
27:05does he really try
27:06to lean into that pass game
27:07and just kind of
27:08take the training wheels off
27:09from Murray and Harrison
27:10and the rest of this set?
27:11Well, I don't believe
27:12you're not going to abandon
27:13your principles.
27:15But certainly you want to go
27:16to where your strengths are.
27:17And so you still see
27:18they're still lining up
27:19in some heavy personnel.
27:21You've seen a little bit
27:22of mix of under center
27:23and some in shotgun.
27:25But what I like is
27:27nothing against Trey McBride.
27:29He's an excellent,
27:30excellent player.
27:31But I love how early
27:32in this game
27:33Murray is going
27:34to Harrison Jr.
27:36Carter's going to creep down,
27:38gets close to the 12.
27:39We'll see where the officials
27:40market.
27:42Femi Oladejo
27:43was there.
27:44Cardinals offensive rank
27:46since week 10.
27:46This is when Kyler came back
27:48from the ACL.
27:49This was Drew Petsing's
27:50first year here.
27:50You see where they rank.
27:51The passing game,
27:53again, just has been
27:54in that bottom half
27:54of the NFL.
27:56How much can that change
27:57here in the next coming weeks
27:58and the rest of the season?
27:59Listen, I think when you
28:00watch Murray,
28:00he's improved in so many
28:02different aspects
28:03of playing quarterback.
28:04Under center,
28:06drop back pass,
28:07playing in the pocket,
28:08play action.
28:08But what we need
28:10to see more of
28:10is some of that
28:11freestyle,
28:12some of that freelancing,
28:13some of that creative stuff
28:15that, again,
28:15I really believe
28:16gives Murray
28:17his superpower.
28:19Kyler saw something
28:20he did late,
28:21so the Cardinals
28:21are going to burn
28:22their first of three timeouts.
28:24Trying to get everyone
28:24set here on a big
28:25third and three
28:26coming up.
28:27So 46 seconds
28:29left in the quarter.
28:30As we go downstairs
28:34to Aditi.
28:35Guys, Kyler Murray
28:36was as honest
28:37as he could be
28:38when he spent
28:38all the weekend
28:40being peeved off.
28:42Only he said it
28:42in a different way.
28:43And when I asked him,
28:44well, how are you now?
28:45He said,
28:45I'm still kind of
28:47peeved off.
28:48I'll tell you this,
28:49when we watched him
28:50in that last game,
28:51he definitely was
28:53so angry
28:54when he threw
28:54an interception.
28:56What he does need
28:56to work on
28:57is controlling
28:58that anger.
28:59It's something
29:00he's talked about
29:00a lot with his coaches.
29:02Yeah, Aditi came
29:03into the room.
29:03You could sense
29:04he was still frustrated.
29:06He's always great
29:07with us,
29:07always affable.
29:09But you can feel
29:10the urgency
29:10from Kyler Murray
29:11as they try to get
29:12their season jump
29:13started here
29:13in week five.
29:14Third and three
29:15pocket collapses.
29:16Kyler on the run.
29:18Kyler in
29:19for the Arizona
29:20touchdown.
29:24No flags.
29:27And the Cardinals
29:28build on their lead.
29:30The run of a dozen
29:31for Murray.
29:36Well,
29:36any third down
29:37rush plan,
29:38Spiro,
29:39you have to account
29:40for Murray
29:40getting outside
29:41the pocket.
29:42And when you go
29:43inside,
29:44right now,
29:46the Titans,
29:48they go with
29:48an inside rush.
29:49Watch number seven.
29:50He's the spy
29:51for Murray.
29:52He goes inside,
29:53and that's just
29:54too much of a head start.
29:55Murray takes the edge
29:56and gets in for their
29:57second touchdown
29:58of the game.
30:00And boy,
30:00any time these
30:01first quarter
30:02struggles continue
30:04for the Tennessee
30:06Titans.
30:07They've now been
30:07outscored 44-9
30:09in first quarters
30:10this season.
30:12Conor Murray,
30:1330-second rushing
30:15touchdown of his
30:16seven-year career.
30:18Cardinals in control
30:19on CBS.
30:20We officially have
30:27the coolest crew
30:28in the history
30:28of sports television.
30:30Our Warren Palmer,
30:30Chad Grigneri,
30:31two members of our
30:33CBS crew went
30:34skydiving yesterday
30:35just outside Phoenix.
30:38And it's also official,
30:38you and I are the most
30:39boring members
30:41of our crew, Arch.
30:42Speak for yourself.
30:43I didn't get an invitation.
30:44I mean,
30:45You would have done it?
30:46I would have done it.
30:47Absolutely.
30:47I don't know if I believe
30:48that.
30:48There's a DK is going
30:50to return it again.
30:51Crosses the 20
30:52and tackled hard.
30:54There's a couple of
30:54flags at the end
30:55of that play
30:56as they bring him
30:56down at around
30:57the 23-yard line.
31:01You see what the
31:02officials say here.
31:03Our referee,
31:03Sean Smith.
31:08Now maybe a second
31:09flag thrown in
31:10after the play.
31:18There's two fouls on the
31:26play, both on the
31:27receiving team.
31:28Holding.
31:29Number 20.
31:31That penalty's declined.
31:32Holding.
31:33Number 30.
31:3410-yard penalty.
31:35First down.
31:36Tennessee most penalized
31:38team in the sport.
31:39Arch, this is what
31:39Callahan was upset.
31:40Looked like Simmons
31:41may have been held.
31:42Yeah, you're going to
31:43watch Jeffrey Simmons.
31:44Now look, I don't think
31:45it had any effect on the
31:46play, but 98 right here,
31:49you see a hold.
31:50I still think Kyler
31:51Murray scores, but
31:53certainly I do think
31:56they have a point.
31:57Probably missed a hold
31:58right there, and what a
32:00wipe to touchdown off the
32:01board.
32:01And now the pressure
32:10ratchets up, and this
32:12Titans offense play
32:13action fake to Pollard.
32:16Ward's swinging it far
32:17side of the field, and he
32:18locates Ridley.
32:20Calvin Ridley off to
32:21another slow start.
32:23Similar slow start, Arch,
32:25that we saw last year
32:26before he turned it up,
32:27eventually got to 1,000
32:28yards as they desperately
32:29try to get him going.
32:30You got to love this.
32:32Backed up inside your
32:3415-yard line, play
32:35action pass, beautiful
32:37protection, isolation to
32:39Ridley, and now you're
32:40on the 38-yard line.
32:42That is a great, great
32:43play and great start to
32:45this drive for the
32:45Titans.
32:46Pick up a 25 for
32:47Tennessee, and that a
32:49good amount close to
32:49their 40-yard line when
32:51we come back.
32:51End of one in Glendale.
32:54Cam Ward, the number
32:55one overall pick on the
32:56big stage against Kyler
32:57Murray.
32:58Cardinals in front on
33:00CBS.
33:01Spiro and Arch back with
33:05you here in Glendale.
33:05Really good start for the
33:06Arizona Cardinals, 14-3.
33:08Now the question, if you're
33:08Tennessee, you're down
33:09double digits already, how
33:11committed can they stay to
33:12the ground game in this
33:13offense?
33:14Well, I think they have to.
33:15And I love the way they're
33:16running game, the way they
33:17started out.
33:18They have to stay balanced.
33:20Their defense has to play
33:21better so they can allow
33:22Cam Ward to just run a
33:24functional offense.
33:25They're certainly not good
33:26enough to be a one-dimensional
33:28only passing game, but
33:30they've got to make
33:30something happen on this
33:31drive.
33:32And this is an excellent
33:33start getting out from
33:34being backed up.
33:35They just got to continue
33:36to stack plays, and they
33:37cannot go backward with
33:38penalties.
33:3925-yard pass play to Calvin
33:42Ridley at the end of the
33:43first quarter.
33:44Play action from Ward up
33:46the seam, but dangerous
33:47pass.
33:48Again, looking for Ridley.
33:50And it was Jalen Thompson
33:51who had a chance.
33:52Arch Thompson has been
33:54really good on the back end
33:56with Buda Baker, one of
33:57their starting safeties
33:58here.
33:59Had a shot.
34:00Yeah, they've got two
34:01veteran safeties that
34:02have kind of had to anchor
34:04this secondary with all the
34:06different moving parts at
34:07cornerback.
34:08One thing you notice,
34:10again, you're noticing a
34:11lot early in this game, is
34:13the pocket is pretty clean
34:14from Cam Ward.
34:15And just like it is for a
34:16lot of different
34:17quarterbacks, when there's
34:18a clean pocket is generally
34:20when he has been at his
34:21best.
34:22Back to the running game,
34:24the Cardinals run
34:25defense, which was a
34:26little bit suspect last
34:28week.
34:29P.J.
34:30Mustapher making first
34:31contact.
34:33But you're right, they
34:34protected Ward.
34:35We mentioned at the top,
34:35no quarterback sacked
34:36more in the league through
34:37the first four weeks of the
34:39season, and now they've
34:40reverted back to this tough
34:41third down in long.
34:42And here's the question on
34:44third down.
34:44I mentioned earlier in this
34:45game, the Cardinals, they
34:46don't really bring a lot of
34:48glitzes.
34:50And they're not a great
34:51pressure defense, but when
34:52they do bring four, they're
34:55powerful up front.
34:56They do have a good, they do
34:57a great job of being able to
34:59push the pocket and
35:00constricting it around the
35:01quarterback.
35:01I see Tennessee's third down
35:07struggles.
35:08Ward protected, and it's
35:09incomplete.
35:11Oh, boy.
35:12I'll manner.
35:14Unable to squeeze it.
35:15Ward delivering it.
35:17Certainly a catchable pass.
35:19And on fourth and long,
35:20Tennessee's drive stall is out.
35:22They're going to punt.
35:23They should have caught this,
35:24there's no doubt.
35:25Right there, right in his
35:26hands.
35:28But I do think that Ward
35:29could have led him a little
35:30bit more inside, recognizing
35:32that the coverage, there was
35:33a cornerback out there in
35:35the flat.
35:36He just led his receiver, but
35:38Keytrail Clark already
35:39making another impact play in
35:41this game.
35:42What a play.
35:43What a recovery by Clark.
35:45As Greg Dorich, boy, slips
35:46the initial tackle.
35:48He's got all kinds of
35:49dynamism in his legs in the
35:51return game.
35:51Seven yards, hard falling on
35:53the return after the 43-yard
35:55punt.
35:55by the Pro Bowler
35:57Johnny Hecker.
35:58Murray and company in
35:59command early second.
36:03What's the kind of start?
36:04Jonathan Gannon was hoping
36:05for two drives, two
36:06touchdowns, eight plays,
36:09seven plays orchestrated by
36:11Kyler Murray.
36:13And now his franchise
36:14quarterback with another
36:16chance to build on this
36:17lead.
36:19I wondered what this
36:20offense would look like after
36:21they lose one of their
36:22front line backs for second
36:24straight week.
36:24James Conner a couple of
36:25weeks ago, season-ender foot
36:28injury.
36:29And now Trey Benson on the
36:30shelf on IR for the next
36:31four weeks.
36:32Michael Carter under the
36:34microscope gets out across
36:35the 30-yard line as they
36:36try to take on this Denard
36:38Wilson-led Tennessee defense.
36:40All right, a defense that was
36:41surprisingly good considering
36:43their record last year with
36:44the numbers.
36:45But this year now bottom third
36:47in most major categories.
36:48Yeah, and when you talk to
36:50them, and really when you
36:51watch this defense, you see
36:52their numbers, you know, in
36:53the bottom third in almost
36:54every major statistical
36:56category.
36:57If you just break up, not this
36:59game, but if you break up
37:00their first four games, for the
37:01first three quarters, they
37:03actually play like one of the
37:04better defenses in the NFL.
37:05They have had catastrophic
37:07breakdowns in almost every game
37:09in the fourth quarter.
37:10A big reason why those numbers
37:11are so low.
37:12Michael Carter blown up, not
37:14much room to maneuver.
37:15Remember, Wilson, two years on
37:16Jonathan Gannon's staff in
37:18Philly as the DB coach.
37:20Showed a lot of familiarity
37:20between these two staffs.
37:23Wilson was actually a finalist
37:25for the Eagles defensive
37:26coordinator job after Gannon
37:27left.
37:29And so two men who know each
37:30other awfully well.
37:31The primary objective coming
37:34into this game was putting a
37:36lid and taking care of the
37:38explosive plays.
37:39They've had big explosive plays
37:41with terrible timing against
37:42their defense.
37:43And I thought, talking to him,
37:44they were going to play their
37:45safeties back a little more.
37:47But in this game, they've gone
37:48single coverage and the
37:49Cardinals have taken advantage
37:50of it.
37:51Tennessee rushes for Murray
37:53protected.
37:54Let's see if we get a flag here.
37:56Nothing.
37:57And it is clean.
37:59Excellent coverage.
38:00So Michael Wilson was the
38:01intended target.
38:02Jalen Armour Davis, archer,
38:05has been targeted by Murray
38:06already, was there.
38:07And listen, the Cardinals must
38:08have seen something on film.
38:10This is the second time that
38:11they get him on an out and
38:12up.
38:12He gets away with a small
38:14little tug right there.
38:16And you would love that ball to
38:17be inside.
38:19You know, Murray to lead his
38:20wide receiver inside to take
38:22advantage because Wilson flat out
38:24beat Armour Davis on that
38:26route.
38:26So Denard Wilson's defense able
38:29to force a three and out.
38:30Their catch by DK after a 39-yard
38:35punt.
38:36Cam Lord in this Tennessee
38:38offense looking for points.
38:39They're down double digits.
38:41Early stages, second quarter.
38:46State Farm Stadium, Glendale,
38:47Arizona.
38:49Brian Callahan, his quarterback's
38:50coach, Bo Hardegree.
38:52Second week since Hardegree was
38:54given the play calling range to
38:56see what they've done so far.
38:57The field goal on that really
38:58impressive opening drive that
39:00stalled out.
39:01And that's just a big drive here
39:02for Tennessee.
39:03Listen, part of it is the
39:06receivers, the skill, everybody
39:07else also has to do their part
39:10for Cam Lord.
39:11You just can't put it all on his
39:12shoulders.
39:13Had a couple big drops on that
39:15last drive.
39:16We start here with the run game
39:17to Pollard.
39:18Football came out.
39:22Officials, I believe, marked that
39:24down.
39:25No official signal.
39:26Now they say Cardinals football.
39:29Barron Browning making the clean
39:31recovery.
39:33And a disastrous sequence for
39:35Tennessee.
39:39Every turnover subject to
39:41automatic review.
39:42They'll certainly take a closer
39:42look at this Pollard in a sea of
39:45defenders.
39:45The question is, I think his arm,
39:49his right, you know, that ball,
39:51that ball looked to be out.
39:52Look, as you see him falling to
39:54the ground, you see his left arm
39:56kind of swing up, and there's no
39:58ball in it.
39:59So right about here, that ball is
40:01out.
40:03March, that's the leg of their
40:05tight end, David Martin Robinson,
40:07that got tangled up right around the
40:08football.
40:09I think that was Zach Carter, number
40:1090, who was able to come in there
40:14and strip that ball out.
40:16Just incredible play by this
40:19defense.
40:20And really a disaster for
40:23Tennessee.
40:25Zach Carter just called up from
40:26their practice squad yesterday.
40:29Guy who they didn't sign to their
40:31practice squad until the middle of
40:32September.
40:34Making a play for Arizona.
40:36And now short field for Kyler Murray
40:41as they complete the tight end.
40:44Trey McBride making the catch as he
40:45comes over the middle.
40:46Listen, if you're Tennessee right
40:47now and Denard Wilson, you've got to
40:51regroup and you've got to regroup fast.
40:53You haven't played your best game
40:55defensively to start this game.
40:57And now, backed up, Arizona has a
41:00great chance to really take the
41:01momentum and really deflate this
41:03Tennessee football team.
41:04In this defense, somebody up front
41:06has to find a way to make a play
41:08and get the Cardinals to go
41:09backwards.
41:11On second and six.
41:13Murray goes for the check.
41:14This is Bam Ney.
41:15Able to find the edge.
41:18That'll be a first down
41:19connection for the Cardinals and
41:20they are rolling.
41:21A pickup of 13.
41:23Forced out of bounds eventually by
41:25Cedric Gray.
41:26You can see that Kyler Murray is
41:28comfortable and he's dealing right
41:30now.
41:32He's been on point on almost every
41:35throw that he's made.
41:36You've seen him get outside the
41:37pocket.
41:38You've seen him stretch the field,
41:39take advantage of matchups.
41:41That time, reading the defense,
41:42mismatch on the second year linebacker,
41:45Gray, gets it out and picks up
41:46another big play.
41:47Murray, so far, 9 of 11 for Buck 20.
41:55Efficient.
41:56Knight gets another touch.
41:58Knight leaving his way towards the
42:00end zone.
42:01Touchdown!
42:06It looked like it was Gelda Froholt
42:09springing him free with the key
42:11block.
42:13Every scoring play subject to
42:15automatic review.
42:16They will check to see that Knight
42:17got in.
42:19It's a run of 11, but it looked like
42:21that right knee may have been down
42:23before the football broke the
42:25play into the goal line.
42:29Ruling on the field as the runner
42:30was down at the half-yard line, it
42:32will be first and goal.
42:36It's the second long touchdown play
42:38for the Cardinals that has been
42:40marked down short with a replay
42:42assist.
42:42We had the Harrison 43-yarder
42:44earlier.
42:46They eventually were able to bang it
42:47in for a touchdown.
42:48Are they going to mark this one now
42:49down at the 1?
42:49Well, I tell you what, it's rare in the
42:51National Football League if you're an
42:54offensive play caller, Andrew Petsing,
42:56where pretty much everything you call
42:58seems to work and your players are going
43:00out and just executing, whether it's
43:02Murray and Harrison.
43:03You know, that time you mentioned
43:04Frohold out in front, Trey McBride with
43:06a great block.
43:08Now, right now, everything working for
43:10the Arizona Cardinals in Tennessee,
43:12they have got to figure it out fast
43:14because you're in a deep hole.
43:17Cardinals offensively, it's 22nd in the
43:19league in points.
43:20What is starting?
43:21Trying to get well against this
43:22Tennessee defense.
43:23Knight bangs his way, and now they say
43:25touchdown!
43:26That second stab by Knight gets the
43:31Cardinals into the end zone, and they
43:34build on their lead.
43:37So they take advantage of the Pollard
43:40fumble, and it is all Cardinals here
43:43in Glendale.
43:56I mean, credit tight.
43:57I mean, that defense was stout.
43:59You see Knight just trying to fight
44:01behind Johnson and Hernandez, and
44:04finally gets over the goal line.
44:07Bam Knight, who before today had played
44:09only on special teams, had not gotten
44:11an offensive snap this season.
44:14Gets his second career rushing touchdown.
44:20Pollard, the costly turnover on the
44:22fumble.
44:22And then it's Bam Knight, 21-3,
44:29Cardinals on CBS.
44:34Arizona Cardinals back-to-back walk-off
44:37losses on last-second field goals.
44:40So they needed this start in the worst
44:41possible way.
44:42Bam Knight, second career rushing touchdown
44:45for him as he gets his first opportunities
44:47with this offense.
44:49And now Chad Ryland puts it back in play.
44:5121-3, Cardinals.
44:54As D.K. is going to play,
44:55crosses the 25 to the 30.
44:57D.K. has got a crease.
45:00Inside Cardinals territory,
45:03just a massive play.
45:04Does that turn the tide now for Tennessee?
45:07No flags.
45:09And suddenly their offensive business,
45:11a return of 66.
45:13D.K. is, you know, one of the young players
45:18on this team, the fourth rounder out of Florida.
45:21And you've already seen him this season
45:23make an impact on special teams.
45:25Really great speed, great vision.
45:28I don't know about you, but I'm glad the kickoff return
45:31is making a comeback in the National Football League.
45:34But Tennessee right now, I mean, this is your chance.
45:36You have got to capitalize on one of the very few bright spots
45:41that you've had to your season now
45:42with great field position.
45:46On first and ten, Ward delivers a strike
45:49nearside of the field as Gunnar Helm
45:52makes his first catch.
45:53And Arch, remember, they started well with the offense.
45:55They had a 10-play drive.
45:56It did stall out.
45:57Ended up getting a field goal.
45:58But you've got to come away with a touchdown right here
46:00with everything that's happening with this team.
46:03Yeah, listen, their defense has let them down.
46:05And, again, you had the phone.
46:07Now, Tony Pollard's been one of their best players
46:09on offense for the last two seasons.
46:11You know, he shows up every game, every week.
46:14It was an unfortunate play.
46:15But really, when you look at the Titans,
46:17their unfortunate plays have always come
46:20at the worst times for their team.
46:22With a misdirection here, Spears making his return.
46:27Remember, Tennessee last week
46:28shut out for the first time in six years.
46:30Not only did they not score Arch,
46:32they didn't even get into the red zone.
46:35So, Bo Hardegree, the new play caller,
46:37Brian Callahan, making the change.
46:39Big, big third and six right here.
46:41And, listen, his best connection this year
46:44has been I.O. Manor, the rookie wide receiver.
46:48You've seen him go with Shig Okonkwo.
46:53But you've got to be able to capitalize.
46:56You've got to get that chemistry.
46:57You've got to get that connection.
46:58Some sort of a security blanket has to start to emerge.
47:01Somebody that Cam Ward can count on in these situations.
47:04Or is this potential two-down territory
47:06with the pressure starting to ratchet up?
47:08Ward is going to be wrapped up in the backfield.
47:11Josh Sweat, who has picked up where he left off
47:14that incredible Super Bowl performance for the Eagles last season.
47:19First sack of Ward.
47:22And that is going to make the decision here
47:23a little bit easier for Brian Callahan.
47:25They're going to go for the field goal.
47:26Well, listen, the protection, you can see, was pretty good.
47:28But as you watch his play develop downfield,
47:31he's holding the football.
47:33But there's not an immediate answer.
47:34Stop it right here.
47:36Everybody is accounted for,
47:38and there's nowhere to throw the football.
47:40Make the decision.
47:41Get out a little bit faster
47:43and try to scramble for the first down.
47:45Looked like he may have had DK up the seam
47:47as Joey Sly is up for a 51-yard attempt.
47:51And Sly, after coming in,
47:54having missed his last four field goal attempts,
47:57is perfect in this first half.
47:5921-6 as the Titans get a little bit closer.
48:06Today, all of us at CBS mourn the loss of a dear friend,
