00:01Owning a property abroad is the ultimate goal for most Brits.
00:05It's like a dream come true. It's just so magical.
00:09But for some, a conventional home just won't do.
00:13A lot of it was ruins, but we fell in love with it.
00:18They're setting aside their fears.
00:20The key is to never look down.
00:23To do something remarkable.
00:25It's a mammoth task, really.
00:27Resurrecting Europe's lost villages.
00:29I think any sort of rational person would probably not try and do that.
00:34In this series, we meet the brand new pioneers.
00:38I think I'm a bit all over the place. It's like it's a big day.
00:41Delving into their village's past.
00:44I think that's powder flask.
00:47And we revisit those who already made the bold leap.
00:53And are still battling to keep their dreams alive.
00:57One year. One year without some disaster.
01:00But can they win the race against time?
01:03At the moment, it just feels like everything's falling down and nothing's going up.
01:06To turn crumbling buildings into family homes and successful businesses.
01:11It's a really big boat.
01:17Bless you.
01:18Or will it all fall down around their ears?
01:20Oh, come out! Come out! Come out! Come out! Come out! Come out! Come out! Come out!
01:24oh dear as they try to restore the past to build their future because there's a
01:31whole village to be built yet today looks like he's in an ice cream bag
01:39it's the dawn of a new era for a Sussex family in central France it's the first
01:45day what I would say to me anyway in paradise but it's been a dream really
01:49for a long long time and one village saviour turns content maker to help with his battle
01:55to save a storied chateau we're able to use social media and gain attention for the chateau
02:01and that provides all the income we need in Romania it's a case of delicate demolition
02:07these are the old keys it hasn't been played for the last 20 years and since tatters
02:15as a couple endeavor to save seven centuries of Saxon heritage if we could save this original
02:22organ that was built for this church this would be such a joyous experience for us and in Bulgaria
02:29could a former truck driver's journey end before it's even begun although I'm in the country I have
02:37to leave after 90 days unless I can sort my visa which isn't going to happen
02:53the Second World War saw Europe torn apart by six years of bitter bloody conflict decades later relics of
03:01France's war time struggles litter the land and sea but some of its scars are hidden from plain sight like the
03:09forgotten Hamlet of La Gallisserie in the Vienne department once home to a noble family during the war
03:17this manor house became the underground home of French resistance forces and now Lolly and Sean from Sussex are
03:24fighting to preserve its existence with the history in the wars it's probably had a lot of time of struggle
03:34and heartache and now we're living in allegedly better times so she's singing again hopefully all
03:44the walls are singing and chatting and happy so that's all we can do isn't it and protect it really
03:50Lolly and Sean bought the village for just a hundred and forty one thousand euros and in just three
03:58years they've turned a collection of ramshackle buildings into a home a two-bed B&B a holiday let
04:06and a yoga studio but now they're preparing for the most exciting chapter yet in the village's
04:13rebirth welcoming Lolly's brother Greg as La Gallisserie's third permanent resident
04:20with the work that he's going to do on there it'd be a completely different place the village could
04:25be completed within another two or three years that's that's going to be lovely isn't it it's
04:33December the beginning of winter hasn't been without incident for Lolly and Sean a problem
04:39with a recent window delivery delayed them getting their jeet watertight but finally the brushed aluminum
04:46doors and windows are in and the couple's first holiday let is open for business Sean also fitted the
04:55last remaining manoir window so now Lolly is working on a window dressing this is the pelmet so that sits
05:05on a pelmet shelf hopefully it's the heaviest pelmet I've ever made in my life Lolly's flair for interior
05:14design has given the couple's B&B rooms a timeless look blending antique furniture with contemporary
05:20materials and fabrics but since the manoirs tower was designed for practicality over aesthetics all of
05:28Lolly's soft furnishings must be made to measure push push Lolly and Sean held small victories like
05:38this almost daily I think it's great it's really good but now they're getting set for an altogether
05:49different celebration Lolly's twin brother Greg recently sold his house in London and today he's
05:56due to arrive in France but this won't be a casual stopover he's moving here for good Greg's due here
06:04I think in an hour he's gonna arrive three or four hours earlier than we even anticipated so now it's
06:11all kind of like switch on get this stuff out here Lolly and Sean have been using this barn as a dumping
06:18ground that can go up in my utility please but soon work will commence to turn this drafty unappealing
06:26space into Greg's forever home it looks like he's in a nice cream van for three years Lolly and Greg lived
06:36500 miles apart oh bless him and in the end it was a shared affection for this extraordinary village that
06:45brought them back together do come in the next day Greg is rested and ready to embrace village life it's
07:02the first day what I would say to me anyway in paradise but it's been a dream really for a long long time
07:07so it's phenomenal the sonorous structure which will become Greg's home was originally built as a
07:15milking shed that doubled up as a winter shelter for livestock the barn was stripped and used as a
07:23warehouse when the village was most recently owned by melon farmers and now its residential conversion is
07:30well underway and I'm really excited because I've got this amazing prospect and project with his barn to
07:40turn this into an absolutely fabulous house darling the bond conversion could take 12 months to complete
07:49but Greg knows it'll be worth the wait still can't get used to that view though to many the idea of
08:08rescuing an entire village might seem like an impossible dream but in the foothills of the Carpathian
08:15mountains in Transylvania lies a living example of what two decades of care and commitment can
08:21achieve for over 750 years the village of Kund was home to a community of German-speaking settlers
08:30called the Transylvanian Saxons but when communist rules swept through in the late 20th century many
08:39left the land they'd called home today the village has been revived as a tourist destination thanks to
08:48Jonas and Ulrike a couple determined to see the village thrive once more when we came in 2003 many many
09:01people had left already this was our motivation to say we need to do something to keep people in
09:07the village here and we came about this concept of the scattered hotel and we are now operating 12 properties
09:17in the village plus a church but the village's 14th century church is in need of extensive restoration
09:25it's taken 20 years of fundraising but the goal has never changed to bring the church back to
09:33life as a space for the whole community it's November and recently they've taken a huge leap forward
09:40so this church is now for the next 49 years part of the Regina Maria Foundation which is a big charity in
09:52Romania royal family is a patron of this charity we hope we'll be starting to build in springtime but
09:59I think our biggest problem will be finding qualified specialists because this is a great a-listed
10:05building so it needs to be treated with a lot of respect but the search has begun and Jonas has found
10:13their first expert Burkhardt who's come today to assess the condition of one of the church's last surviving
10:20treasures the church organ in the our church is in big need of restoration of course it's always nice
10:31to save as much original parts as we can do from this organ but it hasn't been played for the last 20
10:37years and St tatters and many different places built in 1835 the organ has suffered from time and neglect
10:46many of its parts are missing or damaged but Burkhardt isn't giving up hope these are the old keys
10:54it's a modern keyboard but these are the old parts but on closer inspection he makes a curious discovery
11:05these pipes are not original during the first world war tin from church organs was often requisitioned for
11:15the war effort many were replaced by zinc producing a duller sound it's likely the original was never fully
11:24restored until now to repair it's not impossible it seems Burkhardt may have good news
11:34we thought it couldn't be saved but the specialists are saying that there is a very good chance to save
11:47the organ we've been thinking we need to replace this organ with another organ that is in church storage
11:53at the moment but if we could save this original organ that was built for this church this would be such a
12:00joyous experience for us but as with every part of this village's revival there is one crucial question
12:09it comes down to budget you know and we need to have a look at the numbers and then we'll know will
12:16we be able to afford that we will be able to raise funds to restore this organ to its former original glory
12:23coming up raising the roof a Hampshire man battles to raise a derelict chateau from the ashes the next
12:39big thing is really exciting because that's the big turret going on and it's going to be quite a big
12:45job because it's huge and a former truck driver hits a roadblock with her plans to resurrect one of
12:51the bulgaria's ghost villages i don't know where i'm going to go what i'm going to do i have no idea
12:57so that's why i'm planning on finding a husband or getting my visa
13:01they say it takes a village to raise a child and during the darkest days of world war ii one building
13:20hidden in the forests of chamon became just that
13:2490 miles east of the city of limoges stands chateau
13:30de chamon its walls once provided sanctuary for jewish children escaping the horrors of the holocaust
13:36a community thrived here hundreds of lives saved by the kindness of strangers
13:43now 80 years on chamon has a new guardian
13:49dan preston from hampshire whose mission has been to restore this fire damaged ruin
13:55to preserve its heroic past
13:58i've worked on this place pretty much solidly every day for two years
14:06and there are times that are harder but there's never a day that i don't want to come in and do it
14:11you know the the thrill of doing it and achieving it and giving it back to so many people i think is
14:17enough to keep that momentum going
14:19dan knew giving chamon its rightful future would take more money than he had
14:25funding this 19th century restoration would take a 21st century solution
14:31social media
14:33good morning well in the spirit of things not dropping on my head and killing me
14:38it's finally time to take down the infamous suspended toilet
14:44he's documented every step of his journey on his online platform to keep his dream alive
14:51oh my god hello my old friend
14:56the saving grace of this place is that we're not relying on creating a business or bnb or funding
15:06we're able to use social media and gain attention and that provides all the income we need
15:12it's august and since completing the chateau's final floor the restoration is gathering momentum
15:20two of its roofs are now fully covered and with a third one taking shape this 140 year old chateau
15:29is finally reclaiming its regal form
15:32so we started putting roofs on at the end of last year and it seems a quick process but there's been a
15:40lot of work going into that there's been loads of challenges on the way of there's walls that need to
15:45come down there's more reparations than we thought so all this has just come together really in the
15:50last three or four months with a spell of warm weather dan and his friends brian and nick are
15:56pushing ahead to make the chateau's highest roof watertight the aim is by the end of today this middle
16:04section will look the same as the two sides it will be all fully enclosed and you'll be able to see
16:09the final roof shape the roof shape that was there all them years ago
16:14though the mansard roof originated in the baroque period it surged in popularity in the late 19th
16:24century likely inspiring the chateau's first owner opera singer madame bardet who sought to bring a
16:30touch of parisian elegance to chamon replicating its trademark structure demands precision
16:40and remarkably like every step of this restoration it's a skill dan is learning on the job
16:49when i first came to france i don't even think i owned a drill like i'd never built anything before
16:56so every single step has been a learning curve to gain the necessary skills to complete the next
17:02stage and i've slowly built up a little network of friends who are all passionate about the chateau as
17:07well so there's now kind of three to four of us that come and go and we all help in rebuilding the
17:13chateau now the structure is finished
17:17the lads move on to the cladding
17:21a job not for those with a nervous disposition
17:27is this another one of my don't try this at home videos
17:30through blistering heat the intricate curved structure takes shape
17:37and it's another step closer to the chateau reclaiming its place in history
17:43we've been racing for months and months to try and get this place water tights but we managed it
17:48now you can finally see the shape of the chateau back but as ever in a project this vast every victory
17:57is just the beginning the next big thing is really exciting because that's the big turret going on
18:04it's a final bit of the chateau after that it all looks as it did and it's going to be quite a big
18:11job because it's huge but once that's on the chateau really come alive
18:15it's predicted that within the next 75 years the population of bulgaria could shrink by almost 50
18:30percent hundreds of settlements across the country already lie uninhabited and residents of oresh just
18:38south of the romanian border fear their village could be next
18:42oresh has a history dating back to the roman empire when it was established as a trading post
18:49between bulgaria and romania and while uncertainty over jobs and security in recent years has forced
18:57many locals to trade the countryside for nearby cities brits like kate from bournemouth see beauty
19:04in this area's rough edges the lifestyle here is so much different to the lifestyle in the uk i think
19:13people put themselves in boxes you know you've got to have a design a pair of shoes you've got to have
19:19a designer bag me i don't care following a protracted house hunt former truck driver kate bought this
19:28abandoned farming estate in oresh for just 11 000 euros her ultimate aim is to create a wellness retreat
19:36here but she knows the transformation won't happen overnight this is going to be such an adventure and
19:44there's no time scale as in it has to all be completed and you know looking fabulous in the
19:50next six months you know it's an ongoing process so yeah i'm really looking forward to it
19:59village life began for kate only three days ago
20:02it's winter and with snow forecast in the coming weeks there's a chill in the air
20:07but one local is braving the cold to make sure that kate receives a warm bulgarian welcome
20:16this is the priest from the village church um who came and blessed the house for me in september and
20:23now he comes back and blesses all the houses blesses all the houses in the village i think that's lovely
20:30oh thank you it's really so nice to be part of the community and to be welcomed like that
20:40given her current living situation kate could use a little divine intervention
20:46the previous owner was in the middle of modernizing the farmhouse when he decided to sell up
20:51the house has only basic electrics and running water and isn't even connected to a main sewer
20:57it's been strange getting used to the fact that you haven't got your showers you haven't got your
21:04heating so coming out in the mornings and having a wash and things like that it's exciting um but it
21:11is different tradesmen are booked to fit a shower and heating system as well as a cesspit for waste
21:18water but these upgrades will cost kate two thousand pounds and with funds tight she needs to make savings
21:26elsewhere so this is another one of my outbuildings which i'm hoping to turn into like a little bedsit
21:34um for my retreat once that's up and running this bed however has been left here well i'm currently on
21:42an air bed that keeps going down in the middle of the night so what i'm thinking is i'm going to
21:47hoover this mattress so that i've got a bed to reduce her moving costs kate decided to sell or
21:55donate most of the furniture she owned back in the uk oh i didn't realize the roof was so low
22:05traveling light has helped kate maximize her restoration budget a bit of weight lifting but
22:11life without the bare essentials has been a shock to the system yeah it's all right yeah i'm looking
22:22forward to this but a lack of home comforts isn't the only thing giving kate sleepless nights
22:33it's march and like many expat brits kate is currently navigating the choppy waters of brexit
22:42since brexit you can only come into bulgaria for three months and then you have to leave for three
22:47months unless you've got your visa so although i'm in the country i have to leave after 90 days
22:54unless i can sort my visa which isn't going to happen the prospect of being a part-time village
23:00slavia never entered kate's thoughts now she's working with a local advisor to secure not only her
23:07long-term future but the future of the place she now calls home i don't want to go back it's that
23:14simple i don't know where i'm going to go what i'm going to do i have no idea so that's why i'm planning
23:20on finding a husband or getting my visa coming up and we didn't have a flood i'm very impressed
23:32well done the brakes are on for lolly and sean it's just too cold it hasn't gone above freezing really
23:38for the last three or four days and we've got it for another two weeks but it's full steam ahead
23:45for jonas and ulrico to see the work finally starting after all those years that's incredibly exciting
23:52it's march in transylvania and a big day for jonas and ulrica as restoration of the village's saxon
24:11church is officially underway it's an absolutely beautiful morning for me because to see the work
24:19finally starting after all those years of obtaining uh all the necessary authorizations of
24:25you know obtaining the custodianship of this church and of then being able to finally
24:32get going that's incredibly exciting it's day one of a three-year effort to restore saint nicholas from
24:41the ground up today the 200 year old organ is being removed to protect it from falling debris
24:48when roof repairs begin and it's a mammoth task
24:55we are going to start from top to bottom first of all taking out the pipes
24:59afterwards taking it apart from the very top
25:04one by one all 500 organ pipes are being carefully lifted out each is taken to a storeroom where
25:12restorer burkhard begins the painstaking work of cataloguing them and assessing what can be saved
25:20i think this is not to repair but this is possible
25:25while some original parts have been lost over the years there is hope thanks to an unexpected stroke of
25:32fortune
25:37so luckily there is another church with an organ that will not be restored which has been built by the
25:43father of the brothers who build our organ and the parts that are missing from our organ may be replaced
25:52by the spare parts we got from the other organ just 25 kilometers down the road
25:59it's a remarkable discovery the village organ was designed by the metz brothers members of one of
26:06the most renowned dynasties of saxon organ builders in the 18th and 19th centuries
26:10their work is now considered part of romania's cultural heritage very few of their instruments
26:18remain so preserving each component is vital a day later and despite the complexity the team have made
26:28huge progress it rarely happens that one can say we are ahead of schedule but it looks
26:34like we may even be finishing off this evening rather than tomorrow which was the original plan
26:44because of the organ's historical importance every step is supervised by project manager sebastian
26:50a conservation officer with over 25 years experience restoring saxon churches
26:58the guys are just delicately dismantling the frame of the organ and the great thing about this
27:04all the connections they're not glued or screwed together it's all just assembled manually so that's
27:12very helpful in this case but now the team reach the wind chest the most crucial and vulnerable part
27:19of the instrument it's quite heavy it's okay we want to have it in one piece not so many small ones
27:27because if you have too many small ones and let's get something more broken
27:31the 60 kilo wind chest contains finely crafted valves and channels and if one part is damaged the tuning
27:41could be thrown off and the organ left unplayable
27:46but with the help of several villagers the team succeed
27:50at the moment it's everything fun and we had a nice manpower from the village
27:59this moment marks just a beginning restoring this integral part of the village's spiritual heritage
28:05will take three years but jonas believes with enough support one day the villagers will hear
28:12their organs sing again the moment the estimates it's around 30 000 euros which i think is in a way doable we just need many people to donate small amounts or bigger amounts and then we'll be there soon
28:30we'll be there soon
28:40physically rebuilding europe's ghost settlements is only part of the challenge our village saviors face
28:46bricks and mortar may restart the pulse but community alone provides the heartbeat
28:51aqu jakalisse a holiday Commentary
28:54holiday makers now come and go from laudian sean's bed and breakfast
28:59but they recently welcomed a new permanent resident lolly's brother greg
29:05greg swapped a chic pad in central London for a barn in rural france
29:11now he has his work cut out turning this space from drab to fab
29:15so there's two major things with the barn there's a roof and also as well the closing in of these
29:22two sides and I'm just in throws with two contractors so there was a third contractor
29:27but they were just going to be involved with the roof but for me it's important to get a
29:32contractor who potentially can build the two sides it's quite a big job so just waiting to
29:38hear back from them at this time of the year the main thing hindering progress is poor weather
29:45to protect the aging stonework from further decay Lolly and Shawn need to repoint the
29:51biggest of the man was exterior walls but mother nature has other ideas it's just too cold yeah
30:00it hasn't gone above freezing really for the last three or four days and we got it for another two
30:04weeks luckily their interior to-do list is equally long and today they've decided to tackle a room
30:13that will allow them to expand their B&B offering it's quite an intriguing part of our village actually
30:20this was the original part of a chapel it was our very first bathroom that we created but because
30:27we're creating a twin room which is through the doorway this is gonna now be an ensuite yeah the new twin
30:36room will become their third B&B suite and you'll be hard-pushed to find another bathroom like this
30:42anywhere this part of the building is the oldest part of the village which is we believe dates back
30:49to 1480 ish Lolly and Shawn don't know precisely how the manoir evolved but dates on the stonework indicate
31:00that this structure was built before the main house in the 15th century the Roman Catholic Church held
31:07immense power and influence in France this small chapel was built to service a nearby commune and
31:14Lolly and Shawn are keen to preserve as much of the original building as possible
31:19it's a shame because there's certain elements here that we can't restore or keep really because you
31:29touch it touch any of this plaster work and it just crumbles but if you look carefully up here that's
31:35definitely part of an original crest quite when that was plastered and put in we just don't know
31:41not all battles can be won when restoring a village and parts of the room will need to be stripped and
31:47tiled gorgeous done but most of the original stonework will remain exposed and we didn't have a flood
31:59I'm very impressed well done we're getting better at this building game darling a few weeks later the
32:14stonework is fully exposed ready for the bathroom suite to be fitted but a shift in the weather has meant a shift in
32:23priorities Shawn has returned to pointing and Lolly's continuing work on a gabion wall that will form a new
32:31property boundary this is my first gabion wall I think it's turned out all right while some of this limestone was found
32:40scattered in the grounds most of it was salvaged during renovation work Lolly's brother Greg is also making the
32:50most of the free building supplies this area here is really sort of quite exposed so I'm installing raised beds
33:00partly to sink the terrace down to make it a little bit more protected and then I've brought in some hedging plants
33:07and it's outside of the box thinking like this that's helping secure the future of La Gallisserie for decades to come
33:16we hadn't tackled the jobs that we're doing La Gallisserie might have had five ten twenty years before things
33:25started to fail on the back wall and fell in certain areas so we're definitely putting our stamp on it yeah
33:30you've done an amazing job and it's starting to look really lovely yeah especially on a sunny day with a glass of wine
33:36coming up Kate goes back to basics my outside toilet is literally a hole in the ground and your waist goes
33:50into the hole in the ground and will a mechanical meltdown got to get all the materials up there so it's not
33:56going to be easy scupper Dan's efforts to make the chateau watertight potential disaster the generators
34:03just cut out which is our only source of power at the moment in Shemong October brings a defining change
34:20change to the landscape of the area's ancient forests for the first time in 40 years the chateau has
34:28reclaimed its place in the skyline after weeks of rebuilding its crumbling tower the structure of
34:35the turret roof is in place returning Chaumont's most iconic feature today is a super exciting day
34:43because we're very nearly roofed the whole chateau it's a final little bit we've got the turret on we've
34:49just got to put the little flare on the bottom and then the whole shape of the chateau's back got to
34:53get all the materials up there so it's not going to be easy when the turret was first built workers
35:00likely had only ropes pulleys and brute strength to haul their materials to the top fortunately Dan and
35:08his team now have the benefit of modern machinery this will lift all the balls to the very top where
35:15we'll be to then be able to take them off and nail them on all they need now is some power
35:24I topped it up oh it was topped up a tensile disaster the generators just cut out which is
35:35only source of power at the moment so hopefully we can get that fixed please don't die generator we
35:42really really need you but a village saviour's greatest asset is the ability to problem-solve
35:50and a backup generator power restored the team are hoping it will be plain abseiling from here on in
36:08the first job is to finish the final cladding on the highest point of the chateau 25 meters above the
36:17ground just now and again you look around at where you are and realize what you're doing but there's
36:26some view up here before long the last boards are in place are we done and the lads can de-rig for
36:40the next stage of the turret's complex design so far so good we still got a long way to go though
36:51Dan's attempting to recreate the turrets which is hat canopy which defined the chateau silhouette for
36:59nearly a century until a fire tore through the building in 1986 the previous custodian escaped by
37:08tying bed sheets together and luring herself from an upper floor window and only a handful of old
37:15photographs survived the idea what we're trying to do is we're going to put these little hangmen all the
37:28way around what's going to happen is they will support this little bit of roof here so then it brings
37:35the whole shape back to how it was and that's kind of the plan so what we're trying to work out is how
37:40to get these little frames all in and all level and all nice so they can support that roof really really
37:47well that's the theory at least but putting it into practice is posing some challenges yes so we'd be
37:56protecting these first all the way along basically what we're trying to do is build something very precise
38:13on an old wibbly wobbly bit of brickwork so we're just working out by the time we get around the front
38:19we're going to be dangling on ropes 20 meters above the ground so we just want to work our way out that
38:25it's easy and easy to mount and all kind of works out the structure will bear the weight of the roof any
38:33mistakes could have disastrous consequences and dan's feeling the pressure we're going to get right
38:39before we go around the sides anyway keep saying that doesn't he he's got to get it right problem
38:46solving is a daily task for all of our village saviors and after two years of being tested by
38:52this settlement dan has faith that where there's a will there's a way we haven't entirely worked out
38:59how we're getting it up there we'll see it always works out given the significant strides he's made
39:13it's hard to believe that just over two years ago dan began with ruins and having arrived in
39:21bulgaria only six weeks ago that's exactly where kate finds herself even cooking is a back-to-basics affair
39:29my first hot meal was baked beans and i'll tell you what they were the best baked beans ever but
39:36kate has had irons in other fires and her dilapidated home has recently taken several tentative steps into
39:43the 21st century so what they've done is they've come in they've cleared all this area and then they've
39:52built a nice big cesspit for me so all the waste water from a shower sink toilet will then come
40:00back out through the barn straight down into my cesspit cesspits were introduced to europe in the 16th
40:08century and are still used in areas like this where main sewers are unavailable and as far as kate's
40:15concerned it's a big upgrade there was nothing here so basically what happens is my outside toilet which
40:23i've still got here is it is literally a hole in the ground um and your waste goes into the hole in
40:29the ground local trades have also been busy inside the main farmhouse so we've had the plumbing put in
40:39or the pipe work put in for a shower toilet and sink i'm washing my hair in a bucket at the moment
40:47using pots and pans so to have a working shower i is going to be a dream that first shower is going
40:53to be gorgeous a century ago when this estate was built this one acre plot would have fully sustained
41:01an entire family now kate's looking to past dwellers to guide the way to a sustainable future
41:10this is so lovely now because all of this was overgrown i couldn't really get up the path you
41:15couldn't really see the path to be honest and to have it all clear now is lovely this side i'm thinking
41:23of getting it rotavated and then there's going to be veg there i can pretty much live off the land you
41:29know i'm already getting eggs from the neighbor it's really just basics it's going back to basics
41:38many would crumble living in such spartan conditions but kate is thriving
41:47buying into a ghost village is not for the faint of heart
41:51when she chose to move here kate bet her future on a spin of the roulette wheel
41:57gambling her financial security in an attempt to build a better future for herself
42:02and for this forgotten corner of europe
42:07money-wise i am literally now down to not a lot and i mean you know under three thousand pound
42:16however i've done the main jobs that i wanted to do
42:19my end goal i see it i know what it's going to be and i'm working towards that
42:2812 years ago kate's world fell apart when she lost her husband daryl
42:34since then she's been rebuilding her life brick by brick and now she's finally found a place that will
42:40become a refuge for herself and others seeking peace hope and recovery
42:48the long-term plan for this village was always in my husband's memory to run a little retreat
42:55for people to come over if they've you know if they've got a few issues if they want a bit of peace and
43:00quiet if they want to see how it is to be on the other side of the rat race and the madness of what
43:07is you know our lives so yeah my plans haven't changed
43:14for now her long-term future is shrouded in uncertainty kate has yet to secure a work visa
43:21meaning she'll return to the uk six weeks from now unable to come back for another three months
43:27but they say home is where the heart is and though the start of her journey as a village savior may
43:34see her hopping between countries it's clear her heart is staying here in oresh
43:42when you go through the village it's sad that so many properties are just falling down and are left
43:49it has to go back to how it was it has to be lived on you know
43:54you know i've been here six weeks and i have loved every single minute second of it
44:01it absolutely 110 feels like home i don't think about the uk at all i don't sit here and go oh my
44:08god i'm you know i miss this and i miss that i miss nothing it's like it's always meant to have been
44:14home it's like i was meant to be here
44:25next time oh i can feel a swim coming on loli and sean dig deep we've had so much work to get to this
44:33point you know three years of just building and this is kind of the finale really teamwork makes the
44:40dream work for dan i'm surprised at how many other people have got on board and have shared this
44:46dream with me and amazing discoveries in transylvania for jonas and arica so obviously everybody is very
44:54excited today to see how we can restore this bring it back to life
45:07so
45:24so
45:29you
