00:00Hi Vogue, I'm Greta Lee. Today I'm making six cocktails inspired by my six favorite movies
00:05with the help of my dear friend Don Lee, who is a, what do you call yourself these days?
00:11Bar consultant?
00:11Oh, I was going to say mixologist. Bar consultant. So here we go!
00:15So the first drink that I'm going to make is a bokbunja yuja sour, and it's inspired by one of my favorite movies of all time,
00:36Memories of Murder, by the incredible director Bong Joon-ho.
00:39We were thinking about the color, that red dress with the white collar that they use to lure the killer.
00:45One of the key ingredients to this is something called bokbunja, and this is this blackberry liqueur.
00:52Actually, Don, come here. You're the expert. Help me with this.
00:55So this, it has some special powers, right, from what I understand?
01:01According to Wikipedia, it enhances male sexual stamina.
01:05Okay, so use accordingly, right?
01:07Okay, so I'm going to use the old school version. Here's a more new school version.
01:12It kind of feels like a cough syrup.
01:14So here's this yuja. So when was the first time you saw this movie?
01:18I, unfortunately, didn't see it until after Parasites. I was a latecomer to the movie.
01:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:23I remember the first time I saw it. It was really validating to me in terms of, like, genre-bending in Korean cinema.
01:29It's something that I don't feel like we have as much here in the West.
01:32And as soon as I saw that movie, I felt understood, which made me—I don't know what that says about me, because it is about a murder.
01:40So Don and I first met—when was that, like, 20 years ago? At Sambar?
01:45At Sambar, yeah.
01:46And I remember you teaching me this then, so let's see if I do this—
01:49Oh, see, I'm already wrong. Oh, no. And then you really go for it.
01:52Yeah, I'm going for it.
01:54How am I doing?
01:55You're great.
01:56Good!
01:57Good job.
01:58Okay. Garnish or no garnish?
01:59No garnish. Keep it simple.
02:00Ooh, bad ass. So I see what you did here. This red color, red dress.
02:05Yep. The pokpunja gives you that color and that kind of attractiveness. Your eye turns to it in that same way.
02:11In that movie, the red dress is the focal point.
02:13Exactly.
02:14As soon as it comes on screen, all eyes are on that dress.
02:18This is the yellow chartreuse, last word, inspired by Chungking Express.
02:23Dawn, I'm going to have you stick with me here because I have to take advantage of your encyclopedic knowledge.
02:29Which brings us to our next cocktail, the last word, right?
02:33It's a little bit of a variation of last words.
02:35Yeah.
02:36Traditionally, it would be made with green chartreuse. We're going to do it with yellow chartreuse.
02:39And there's a reason why it matches the color of Fei Wang's shirt in the movie.
02:45Mm-hmm. This is the easiest cocktail. Everything is one, one, one.
02:48Really? That's it? Just one ounce of gin?
02:50One gin, yeah.
02:50I don't know about that.
02:51The chartreuse is just as strong as the gin.
02:53All right. Next, we have the lemon juice. That's going to go in here?
02:56Yep.
02:58I remember seeing Fei Wang and Tony Leung and completely falling in love with both of them,
03:04but especially Fei. And I just love how this movie is also genre-bending,
03:08and it captures that essence of romantic longing and loneliness and chance encounters.
03:16It's so good. It's also great.
03:18Okay, so what's the next thing we do?
03:19Maraschina Lacour.
03:20All right. That goes in there.
03:23Stretch out.
03:23Stretch out.
03:24Arms a little bit before I...
03:25There you go.
03:29Ooh, that looks so good.
03:32The chartreuse is really delicate. It's not overpowering. I guess you can say it's genre-bending.
03:39It's a combination of all of these different elements, one-to-one-to-ones. Maybe we can say romance, comedy, and drama.
03:48I feel weird drinking alone. Do you want one too?
03:51I'm okay.
03:51So my next film is Romeo and Juliet by Baz Luhrmann. I was 13 or 14 when this movie came out, and it was really life-changing for me at the time.
04:06Baz Luhrmann is one of those directors. Aesthetically, I think he might be unmatched.
04:11Leonardo DiCaprio, Hawaiian shirt, right?
04:14Heard of him, yeah.
04:14You think Shakespeare, and it's going to be stodgy and old, and it's a play. And this was such an exciting modern version, right? And so let's do a modern version of tiki. A painkiller is a traditional tiki drink that would be rum, pineapple, coconut, orange.
04:29So we're going to use a little bit of over-proof Jamaican rum. So just a little bit of this one. This is half an ounce.
04:34Half an ounce. Oh, healthy half ounce.
04:36That's going to be a healthy half ounce.
04:37Ooh, me and rum too. We are not good friends.
04:40It's dangerous.
04:41So instead of pineapple juice, we'll be doing pineapple rum. This is actually distilled and infused with pineapple.
04:49Gorgeous.
04:50And instead of just coconut, we're going to do caramelized sweetened condensed coconut milk. And we're going to do acid orange juice.
04:58Added a little citric acid to the orange, so it has that burn of a lemon.
05:02Is that it?
05:02That's it.
05:03I thought that was going to be a lot harder.
05:04I'm going to give this one a shake because that caramelized cocoa, I'm worried that it's not going to emulsify enough.
05:09So you can rest on this one.
05:10Watch how it's really done.
05:13Look at that form.
05:15We're doing this in a rocks glass.
05:22I'm drunk. I'm drunk.
05:23Yeah.
05:24You doubled the rain.
05:25I did.
05:28Okay, so I'm really excited about this one.
05:30We're making a Venetian spritz inspired by the movie Summertime, starring Katharine Hepburn.
05:36I find her performance in this film so unbelievably inspiring.
05:41I think Katharine Hepburn was 47, maybe even 48 when she made this movie.
05:47She is just stunningly beautiful. Womanly, her maturity, her life experience, all of it.
05:53And I just, I love the film. And the fashion is unbelievable. A lot of beautiful suiting,
05:59suit skirt sets, and her hair was fab. Her makeup was extremely minimalist. Super inspiring.
06:06We're going to go classic spritz style. So much like an Aperol spritz, we're going to go three parts
06:11of the sparkling wine, two parts of the bitter element, and just a splash of the soda.
06:16So three, two, one. I did a pretty good job with that, right?
06:20Next time we're going to have you savor it.
06:21Oh.
06:24Is that about a three? Maybe a little more?
06:26Good enough.
06:26Okay, good enough. I love this attitude.
06:28We can always add more.
06:28Good enough. Yes. Okay, I love Chenar. This is made from artichokes, right?
06:35Yeah, artichokes.
06:36Yeah, so last step.
06:37Just a splash on top.
06:38A splash. One.
06:41Good enough. Let's give this one a garnish.
06:42Orange? Yeah.
06:43Love it. Here we go.
06:46Okay, cheers.
06:49Oh, that's so good.
06:52Our next drink is the Ramos Gin Fizz, inspired by the movie Magnolia.
06:58Specifically, that opening shot of Tom Cruise.
07:02Yes.
07:02Harsh lighting.
07:03We're talking black leather vest. We're talking respect the .
07:09Yes, we are. Here we go.
07:10I'm talking a lot about my teen angst here, but this movie captured so much of that existential
07:17loneliness. It really had a big impact on me as a young artist. You feel like you've entered the mind
07:23of PTA. So here we go. Here's this drink.
07:26Egg white.
07:29Now, if you don't want to do this, is there a substitute?
07:34We're going to try that again. Take two.
07:38No pressure or anything. God.
07:41Okay, so I'm doing this, and then we're going to rock it this way.
07:48You're done.
07:49Good job. Come on.
07:50Next, we're going to do the heavy cream.
07:53Heavy cream. One ounce.
07:54Just to make it easy, because the egg white was already hard, we have the simple syrup,
07:57lemon, and lime all together for you.
07:59Oh, thank you.
08:00Cream it. And then?
08:01Two ounces of gin.
08:03So this one, we want it to be almost like whipped cream.
08:06Yeah, how do we make that happen?
08:08And we're going to use the spring off of the strainer.
08:10We're going to put that in.
08:11That can't be the official tool.
08:13Seriously?
08:13Call this the dry shake.
08:14Oh my gosh.
08:16Yeah.
08:16Nice. Add some ice.
08:17Okay, and then you go again.
08:19And we're going to go again.
08:20And you tell me when you're ready for this.
08:21Yeah, you do that, and I'll just keep holding this.
08:25You're good.
08:27Okay.
08:27So let's use the bubble to make the foam by pouring into here.
08:31And by pouring slowly, we've now turned all those bubbles into the head.
08:40Okay.
08:41And we're going to let that cream rise to the top.
08:44And this is a definitely stop-and-notice-me kind of a drink.
08:48Just like Tom Cruise's character, I recently heard that he pitched that monologue to PTA himself.
08:53It wasn't something that was pre-written.
08:55And he invited him over to his house and set up, you know, mood lighting,
08:59did the whole thing to pitch him the idea for this monologue.
09:04Oh my gosh.
09:05This might be my favorite one.
09:06It's a sleeper.
09:07Whoa.
09:10So our last cocktail we're doing is Sazerac.
09:14And this one is inspired by my new movie called Late Fame that's coming out soon.
09:21It's starring Willem Dafoe and I.
09:23I wanted to create a cocktail with you that would be inspired by the character I play, Gloria Gardner.
09:29She's my homage to women of the past, women like Isabella Rossellini, Sally Bowles.
09:35This is the only one I haven't seen because it's not out yet.
09:38Yeah.
09:39But I did see that clip where your character meets the Ed character.
09:43And she comes into the room and just takes command of everybody and is definitely the alpha.
09:48And so I figured I'd go kind of like old fashioned.
09:51But let's go further back to that New Orleans tradition of a cognac old fashioned of the Sazerac.
09:57Two ounces.
09:58Two all the way.
09:59There you go.
10:00And it's going to be a quarter ounce of syrup.
10:03And we went with Demerara.
10:04Any brown sugar syrup works.
10:06And then two dashes.
10:07Of Peychaud's Bitters.
10:09One.
10:09The classic.
10:09Two.
10:10Oh, give it a healthy dash.
10:11Yeah.
10:12Should I do one more just because that was kind of light?
10:14There you go.
10:14Okay.
10:14This is absinthe that we'll add to the glass.
10:16This is our key ingredient.
10:18It spritz the absinthe into the glass.
10:20I'm just kidding.
10:21How many?
10:21Just one?
10:22One, two, three.
10:23One.
10:24Ooh.
10:24Two.
10:24What would Gloria do?
10:26She should probably just open this bottle just and drink it.
10:29There you go.
10:29Absinthe really is about that aroma.
10:31It really, you know, it's such a strong flavor.
10:33Let's give it a little lemon on top too.
10:34Oh, okay, okay.
10:35We'll layer lemon oil.
10:37And then do you do this?
10:39You could do that.
10:40Easy.
10:41You can do this too.
10:42All right, here we go.
10:45Oh my gosh.
10:47That's really good.
10:48Not a chill drink, but appropriate for Gloria.
10:52Thanks so much for watching Vogue.
10:53We hope that you guys try these cocktails at home and you check out some of the movies
10:58that we were discussing.
11:00And thank you, John, for being here and for your expertise.
11:04Thanks for having me.
11:05Bye.
