00:00I'm Kwabana.
00:01I'm Vanessa.
00:02V tells us you're a film director.
00:04I am, yeah.
00:05And does that pay well?
00:06I'm here with a short film called Jamaica Road.
00:08It's a love story set in the Windrush era.
00:10Would you mind passing this on?
00:11It's Dovin's CV.
00:12My cousin, you're arrested.
00:14They love a film like that.
00:15I don't want to be another director who makes hood films.
00:18But at least they're making films, man.
00:20Of course we have to make films for white people.
00:22I won that!
00:23I got the job in New York.
00:24They want me to be over there in the next few weeks.
00:26We're gonna be fine.
00:27We still have to make Jamaica Road.
00:29I got a sign!
00:30You think this little film will go helping me now, do you?
00:32Hmm?
00:33You have to be proud of yourselves.
00:34Say hello to one of people for the white man prayers.
00:39Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, Christine Yang!
00:54Now it's time to present the award for Outstanding Debut.
00:57And the nominees are Aaron Saki, Laura Davis, Abigail Alexis, and Kwabana Robinson.
01:12The judges said this fresh new talent has a very bright future ahead of them after delivering a magnificent first film.
01:19And the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut goes to...
01:25Well.
01:26Isfrom her at alguma harm?
01:27I still give capabilities.
01:28Ma'am!
01:29We're all a magnificent thing for you.
01:32I am.
01:33We are all a magnificent man.
01:34We are all a-ler, Our man?
01:35We are all a Christmas.
01:36?!
01:37Our wonderful life.
01:38And Santa, Father, Father, Paola, Paola, Paola!
01:39Hij 공, there's also a great générality from all oficos.
01:40He only diyor all oficos that add the spring foam from Apollo in 2016.
01:41I'm so sorry for the delays my end a pleasure to meet you pleasure to meet
02:10you and thank you for inviting me oh not at all not at all I loved you short by the way oh thank
02:15you now I've heard that you're looking for your first TV job I just want to tell stories that
02:20matter well we've got something that really champions black women's voices okay it's called
02:25baby mudders a group of single mums struggling to survive in Brixton who form a reggae choir
02:32it's called black love actually think love actually but instead of Christmas it takes
02:41place at Notting Hill Carnival it's a sweeping rom-com okay torn apart by violent stabbing
02:47so it's about a black woman business owner in Victorian England who employed freed slaves
02:53oh what type of business did you run a brothel actually thinking about it got one that's
02:58perfect for you cut from a different kente grime and punishment a gritty sci-fi about
03:02the illegal drug trade across the galaxy it's called mandem in outer space
03:08now there's nothing like seeing your script come to life but anyways let's talk about my
03:20next project what did you think of from the boats yeah I really enjoyed it like honestly
03:26the the writing was so sharp um it was really a page turn up thank you thank you you know as a
03:34person of generational trauma I've always wanted to write something about immigration sorry but you
03:39wrote from the boat yes brother so the story is about Jamaican immigrants and your name is Winston
03:46which is a very common job name yes I know I know the amount of nicknames I had over the years
03:51so what inspired you to write this story the idea actually came from my gardener he and his wife
04:00are immigrants and I'm an immigrant when you get it and uh I saw their plight firsthand and I
04:11found their story fascinating yeah yeah their stories are fascinating you said you like the script yes
04:18before I found out it was written by some middle-aged white guy quabs he's Irish he gets it you know
04:24plus Winston's lived in Notting Hill for ages like before gentrification oh right so he's basically a
04:30yardie look I don't want to be a part of some white man's fantasy about black people you can't keep
04:36turning up your nose at everything you want to direct so direct drew if from the boats is getting made
04:40why can't we push Jamaica Road Winston has three decades experience and you have none quabs your first
04:48job isn't necessarily gonna be perfect you know my first job was taking my boss's dog out to shit look
04:53this window of opportunity is closing remember like right now you're a bowl of porridge porridge yeah
05:02you're hot but leave it too long and you're gonna go cold true I just want something decent
05:09something with substance that's all find me that and I'll smash the interview I promise
05:15hey Fiona how was your holiday oh so lovely thank you went to the family home in Tombridge did some
05:25wild swimming oh sorry everyone sorry I'm late oh but I come bearing good news the networks have a
05:32few slots opening up the brief is simple entertaining television with opportunities for diversity so I'm
05:39hoping to get something to them by the end of next week well I've got a dating show idea I've been
05:44developing great let's hear it um it's called hop apps hop apps okay so imagine Masterchef meets
05:53naked attraction five naked contestants compete to win a bachelorette's heart will she go for the
06:00man who looks good or cooks good great okay well thanks for that um after and I have been working
06:08on something for a while that we think has a real potential great let's hear it so it's called my
06:12favorite meal and imagine who do you think you are meets parts unknown I love that idea picture Maya
06:20Gemma going back to Somaliland to explore the roots of bearis and hill of
06:26jeez come on come on yeah hardly an ideal destination though is it Somaliland
06:33oh okay yeah um sorry as a biracial black woman I don't appreciate the racist undertones of your
06:48comment yes my grandfather was Jamaican oh and yeah he left my grandma but I've been going to domino
06:56classes to reconnect with my roots look regardless Abdul already has to deal with society calling him a pirate
07:06for you to undermine his culture as well yeah I was referring to the extremist terrorist threats not not
07:12pirates um I'm sorry for my inappropriate racist comment are we okay to carry on or would we like to take a moment we're fine calm
07:29Abdulla you can go on so I'd actually like to take a moment
07:36Amy you know I'm Ethiopian right 100% I don't know where from he's wasting all this money on a birthday he won't
07:55remember but anyways you man got your tickets to the NLT party yeah come on stop being tight blood I'd
08:06have to bread right now then take a job fam these tickets are an investment bro listen you spend a
08:1130 pound now meet one of your artsy babes then you can take her out all your little cheap dates
08:16what are you talking about hey come love the cheap date I like this walks in the park visiting museums
08:22and have things there and it's never the paid exhibitions always the free ones I don't know why
08:27you man are laughing I took out Vanessa all the time where dead picnics living her best life in New York
08:35though shame she left you for that rich brother she didn't leave me for no guy bro so he was that guy
08:42that she posted on IG New York that tall guy yeah I can't lie cuz they were looking mad cozy bro she

10:05no uncle I'm just saying I'm being selective about the jobs I choose oh so you're choosing poverty
10:12God left the boy alone eh he must figure himself out there's figuring himself out and there's living
10:19at home doing nothing uncle you literally cost me out for selling out Dovin but now you're saying I

10:34that never get no work after black lives matter they even want me to come out of retirement I'm not
10:41as black as here and this backside light-skinned business again this what you have a point no but

12:50I'm scared to ask where can you go from here um a genre-busting regency drama oh can you tell us
12:59more um I can actually it's an adaptation of my favorite book sin and subterfuge it's a
13:05heart-wrenching romance about a man who loses the woman he loves when she's forced to move to the
13:12Americas we're ripping up the rules of the genre and using colorblind casting to create aspirational
13:19roles for black and brown actors we want to make something with integrity and substance that pushes
13:27the boundaries it will be like nothing you've ever seen before I'm I'm really excited about it
