00:00Joe, I bet you're never going to hear that song the same way again.
00:03Yeah, I like what you did there.
00:05Wait, where are you?
00:06Are you under water?
00:07Your phone sounds are horrible.
00:10Can you hear me?
00:11Yeah, you're better now.
00:13What did you say?
00:13We couldn't hear you.
00:15I like what you did there.
00:17All the credit goes to T-Bone on that one.
00:18Well, I wore my shirt you gave me.
00:22Oh, thank you.
00:23A little gratitude.
00:24Yeah, Joe on today.
00:25I knew it.
00:27Celtics.
00:27It's nice.
00:28It actually fits.
00:29It's nice and long.
00:31I really enjoyed the five minutes of listening to you guys do the advertisements.
00:37A lot of people are bitching about that stuff.
00:39Keep the lights on, Joe.
00:40Had eight-game complaints about it, too, on a stream.
00:43We had bills to pay.
00:44They were running dorms.
00:45It really made me want to just buy all that stuff.
00:47That was great.
00:48We love that.
00:49We love to hear that.
00:50It sounds like your team has been doing a lot of running.
00:52That's what Jalen Brown has told everyone, that he feels as if he's on a track team,
00:56not a basketball team.
00:57What's been going on behind the curtain there at practice?
01:00Oh, yeah.
01:00I mean, I think, you know, obviously, with the new roster that we have, we have new strengths,
01:08new opportunities, you know, new basketball personalities.
01:13And it gives us an opportunity to just develop a, you know, a little bit of a different identity
01:16depending upon what gives us, you know, the best chance to win and capitalizing on the strengths
01:21that the team has.
01:22So, you know, that's what we've been doing in training camp, and it's a credit to the
01:27guys.
01:27They've been doing a, you know, a great job just kind of, you know, buying into the identity
01:32that we're trying to create.
01:33Can you give me a couple of those strengths in detail other than the obvious?
01:37You know, Tatum Brown, White?
01:39Yeah.
01:40I mean, I still think as much as the turnover that, you know, we felt like we've had, we've
01:44still got a lot of guys that are still here.
01:47You know, we do have a decent amount of continuity on the court and in the locker room.
01:51So, locker room culture is still very strong.
01:55And then, you know, obviously, the experience that we have with, you know, the returning
02:00guys and what they've been able to do.
02:01And then with the new guys, we're, you know, obviously a little bit younger, a little bit
02:06faster, you know, a little, you know, athletic.
02:09And, you know, there's just guys that have come from different situations.
02:13Maybe they haven't had as much playing time or opportunity and kind of leveraging, you
02:19know, that opportunity that they have here.
02:21So, you know, not much has changed, but, you know, trying to take advantage of the changes
02:27that have been made with the strengths that we got.
02:30First preseason game tonight.
02:31How do you approach these games and what are you looking to see out of your team?
02:35Yeah.
02:36I mean, I think the biggest thing is do we have the same carryover from the identity that
02:40we're trying to create in practice, right?
02:41You know, practice has been good.
02:43It's been fun.
02:44It's been competitive.
02:45It can't be the same thing.
02:46Sometimes, you know, it's easier to do that in practice than it is in the game.
02:50And we just have to, you know, get right to it.
02:52So, really, the identity that we're trying to create, the language that we have, the system
02:56that we're trying to implement, make sure that we're able to do that.
03:00And, you know, obviously, the effort and the mentality.
03:03Joe.
03:04Joe, since we talked to you, I mean, we talked about Tatum a little bit at that dinner.
03:08But since that dinner, he's been making the rounds.
03:10He's been down to New York.
03:11He's been doing some appearances on TV shows and that.
03:14You know, he's pushing new things.
03:16And he made the comment of, I didn't say I'm not playing yet this year.
03:20And it gets people excited.
03:21You know that.
03:22And I know you guys didn't put a timetable on it.
03:24But any more updates on sort of his recovery here?
03:29It's still steady, right?
03:31No, he's alive and well.
03:32He's alive and well.
03:33And just, you know, working really hard to get a full recovery.
03:36So, we'll see how it goes.
03:38Are there times you guys have to have him step back or just to calm it down a little bit?
03:45I mean, I kind of stay out of it.
03:47You know, he has a great team around him.
03:48We're creating, you know, our sports scientists, our physical therapists, you know, his trainer, Nick, and their group.
03:55So, you know, to me, you know, I just allow the people to do their job.
04:00And, you know, everything is centered around, making sure he gets a full recovery.
04:05That's the most important thing.
04:06So, just kind of trust that process.
04:08Trust the people around him.
04:09Joe, have you established clear set goals for the team for the season, where you want to be?
04:15I mean, I don't really like using, you know, to me, it's really developing a mindset and an identity.
04:21You know, I think those are more important than goals per se.
04:23The goals come within the things that we're trying to, you know, go after tactically and systematically.
04:30But, you know, to me, developing a mindset, developing an identity, developing, you know, a process towards how we want to go about doing things throughout a season.
04:39That's just the most important.
04:40So, you know, I think, you know, we're only five practices in.
04:44I think that's what preseason is for, is to really lay the groundwork.
04:47So, and then once the season starts, you know, how quickly can we get to those, that mindset, that personality, that team identity?
04:54How long can we stay there?
04:55And then how, you know, how adjusting can we be?
04:58You know, the season brings on challenges that we don't even know.
05:01We have no idea what's going to be ahead of us this season.
05:03So, can we go in with an open mind and, you know, ready to attack and be problem solvers and kind of take on what the challenges of the season present?
05:11Derek White said this offseason that Memphis is his least favorite city on the NBA schedule to visit.
05:18What's your favorite city and what's your least favorite city right now?
05:20It's a matter of Memphis.
05:21That's where they are right now, so.
05:23Yeah, I mean, I would probably take it into thirds.
05:27And, you know, it's definitely the bottom third for sure.
05:31There's a lot that goes, you know, we actually, you know, the late hours and kind of some of the dead time that we have,
05:37there's a lot that goes into ranking a city.
05:39You know, there's probably close to, you know, 10 to 15 columns that you have to factor in when you're ranking a city, you know.
05:48Speed with which you can get from, you know, landing, you know, getting to the bus when you land is a key one.
05:54And then, you know, distance from airport to the hotel, that's a big one.
05:58Then you got, you know, hotel elevators.
06:00You got, you know, Wi-Fi speed.
06:03You got, you know, size and quality of the fitness center in the hotel.
06:07You got distance from hotel to arena.
06:10So you factor in, you know, shoot around times and whatnot, you know.
06:14I got multiple.
06:15I feel like.
06:16We're just about 10 minutes here.
06:17No, but I feel like the team's choice in hotel shouldn't bring down this entire city.
06:21If you're staying in a hotel that has crappy Wi-Fi or bad elevators, I mean, is the city to blame for that?
06:28Are the people of Memphis to blame for that?
06:31It's the state of five stores.
06:33Of course, it's the league.
06:33It's everything, you know, distance from.
06:35You're not at a Marriott, an office park like us.
06:37Distance from arena back to the airport post-game, how quickly can you get through, you know.
06:42So there's just so much that goes into, just like the game.
06:44I mean, there's so many things that go into what makes it good, what makes it not good.
06:48You know, you got to factor in all that stuff.
06:50Fitness center is a big one for Zell too, yeah.
06:52Joe, on Wi-Fi, like the $12.95 a day when you got to sign up at Marriott Bonvoy,
06:56do you guys pay that and give them a code or do they have to pick that up?
07:00They give us an access code, but that's important for download speeds, for the equipment,
07:04I mean, for the video guys to download games and, you know, you're sharing games amongst staff through Dropbox.
07:11I mean, it's just, you know, just being in the city doesn't tell the whole story.
07:15How about per diem food?
07:16Like, you know, did they hand you an envelope when you get there?
07:20Like 75 bucks a day?
07:23You're laughing at that.
07:24That's a little light.
07:25That's your apps.
07:25And then you got to know, like, you know, is there a good coffee shop and walking distance?
07:30You know, is there a good restaurant?
07:33Yeah, food's probably a very complex question.
07:35Very complex question.
07:37Yeah, did you get handed the cash at West Virginia?
07:40You're of an age where they were still handing out the cash to play it.
07:43Well, no, legally, there was like a food.
07:45They still do it now.
07:46Yeah, they give you, you know, whatever it was, like $20.
07:49Even though you were still going out as a team and getting meals,
07:52there was money on top of it for food.
07:54Yeah, definitely.
07:56No question.
07:56Yeah.
07:57And is it still $20 now in the NBA?
08:00That's the question.
08:01$19.95.
08:02Plus that.
08:03Plus that.
08:04Unbelievable.
08:07What are you watching now, now that you're done with Sopranos?
08:10What are you on to?
08:12Terminalist.
08:13The Dark Wolf one.
08:16I haven't seen that.
08:17I'm going to have to take a check.
08:18Oh, man, you got it.
08:19I mean, it's an unbelievable show.
08:20You got to watch it.
08:21First one was really good.
08:22The Terminalist's first season was good,
08:25and then now they're doing, like, the prequel, The Dark Wolf.
08:28So it's a hell of a show.
08:29Okay.
08:30All right.
08:31You recommend it.
08:32It says it's a hell of a show.
08:33Must now try.
08:35All right.
08:35Yeah, you have to.
08:36It won't disappoint.
08:37All right, Joe.
08:38Well, it's great to talk to you, as always.
08:40Yeah, if you guys can write all those factors down,
08:43and we'll start going over, like, the city checklist.
08:46Okay.
08:46Yeah, 10 to 15 is what you want to rate it on?
08:50Yeah, I think there's 10 to 15.
08:52Does weather factor in for you?
08:54I know you're sort of a dark and gloomy kind of guy,
08:57so you don't really need to be suctioned.
08:58Yeah, I'm not a big, like, I don't know.
09:00I'm one of the least excited people when we land,
09:02and it's, like, sunny outside.
09:04I'm not big on that.
09:05Okay.
09:05But, you know, for the players and probably for the mental well-being
09:09of most of their travel parties, you know, weather is important.
09:12Yeah.
09:12For the average guy.
09:15Yeah, no, they enjoy nice weather.
09:16Not for the different guy.
09:18All right, Joe.
09:19Have a great week, Joe.
09:21Have a great week.
09:22All right.
09:22See you.
