00:00This time on Outback Truckers. Getting all sorts of different reports about the
00:05road. The road's pretty crooked places. When you come out here, basically throw the clock out the window.
00:10Ah, shit. We've got a five-minute loader in front of us, driving through dust, and that's where
00:18accident is happening. Shit. The boat is... Expensive. About 3.5 mil. It looks like it was
00:29the worst of it. Do you attract those doors to the road down the end? Shit. Go to me a little bit,
00:37John. Dicky, it's putting your trailers. It really shits them all. The places for us to pass are really limited.
00:47All right, mate. I'm into it. Shit, there's a hole there.
00:59We've got a fire up here by the look of it, and I'm a bit concerned with where that fire
01:13is. It's not that far off the road. It's got a bit of ferocity to it. You don't want to end up on a fire, and then you've got nowhere to turn around.
01:24You're stuck there. Consequences are deadly.
01:31Now, this road goes around the south-east, so, yeah, we're going to clear it. It's quite a release.
01:43Rex Riles is racing the clock on a mission to get through Australia's desolate red centre for a critical deadline.
01:51Yeah, I've got a few people wanting to know where I am and when I'm getting back.
01:56He has just two days to complete more than 1,500 demanding outback kilometres to get back to his hometown for the biggest event of the year, the Laverton Cup.
02:06We've got to get the track cleaned up and get the water on the track to make sure that we've got an optimal running surface.
02:21These Laverton races are pretty important to the community. It's imperative I get back on time.
02:30Getting close to Alice Springs now. Just going over the James Orr overpass.
02:34We've picked up some tippers we've ordered a while back, and we've taken them down to Laverton.
02:43Starting in Darwin, Rex has already travelled almost 1,500 kilometres to Alice Springs.
02:50Now he's heading west towards Uluru and the notoriously rough dirt of the Great Central Road to get home to Laverton,
02:59where he'll use his brand new tipper trailers worth $150,000 each for his cartridge business.
03:06It has its highs and lows as like any business. There are a lot of pressures. We've got fuel costs and wages.
03:19Well, we're running out here at the Lasseners Highway and head out past Ayres Rock.
03:27And we've got Mount Connor on our left-hand side.
03:30Well, I've been out in the bush and I enjoy driving the big girl.
03:40Rex's big girl is a rare Texas-built Marmon truck on its third engine.
03:47A 550-horsepower, 15.6-litre diesel.
03:52The Marmon is a 1995 truck and they've done nearly 2 million k's.
04:00We're just about coming in to Curtin Springs now.
04:03Get some fuel and park up and have a cold beer.
04:17Part-o, let's do it.
04:18The corrugations here, as you can see, if you're driving it too fast, it does a lot of damage.
04:34We'll start breaking the failures.
04:37If you're trying to read the road, try and dodge it really bad in the spots,
04:40you limit the amount of damage you do. That's the trick.
04:43It takes you a bit more time to get from point A to point B.
04:48We'll just do it all day today and then day tomorrow and then we're going to get it.
04:51I'm going to try and be in a little bit by Friday, lunchtime day later.
04:56If I don't get back there in time, I'm going to be in the shit.
05:04I'm going to get out.
05:06Have a wander around, just see what things are doing.
05:08Hopefully everything's sitting all right.
05:18That's better.
05:20Wheel barons are cold as, but he's just lukewarm.
05:28Oh, come on.
05:32Bit of lube.
05:33Okay.
05:45Well, that's not going to help.
05:47That's...
05:49That's not good.
05:52That's not good at all.
05:53What's happened is the chain has broken the landing leg away from the strut.
06:02This was propping the trailer up.
06:04So it's freewheeling.
06:07If it falls over, we'll take this trailer with it.
06:08All right.
06:09I'm about ready to get this show on the road, I think.
06:22This job is part of a serious setup to keep some communities going through the wet season.
06:28What it is is an oversized fuel tank that's going into a little community called Ringer Soak out the back of Halls Creek.
06:35Legendary 73-year-old trucker Steve Graham has a massive oversized load to deliver to a remote community in the tropical northwest of Australia.
06:47These people, they ran low on fuel last year, you know, and they've got to keep fridges and freezers running like any other little town.
06:54This tank's got to get there and set them up for a wet season.
06:59Once the wet comes in properly, they're isolated.
07:01They need their 84,000 litres of diesel on the ground, keeping their gensets going.
07:06So we've got no choice. We've got to do the job now. The wet's coming.
07:14I'm headed for Ringer Soak out of Halls Creek, and to get to Ringer Soak, I've got to go out the Duncan Road.
07:21From his base in Perth, Steve will lug the tank almost 3,000 kilometres along the Great Northern Highway, turning off at Halls Creek onto the rugged dirt of the brutal Duncan Road, and then travelling another 160 kilometres to reach the tiny community of Ringer Soak.
07:42I've got to liaised with a 150-ton capacity crane. There's two other communities, Balgo and Bilaluna, have needed an upgrade on their fuel tanks.
07:55We have to meet with this crane. It's out at the end of the Tanamai Road.
07:58The crane is being used to install identical fuel tanks in two other remote communities in the Tanamai Desert, just before Steve arrives.
08:10They come back out of the Tanamai Road, meet me, and we go out the Duncan Road, the other way out the back of Halls Creek, and unload me.
08:19So it's all got to go like clockwork, because that big crane costs big bucks.
08:255.5 southbound.
08:31Righto mate, thank you.
08:34We've got one five and a half metre oversize load coming down the hill.
08:39I'm 3.5 wide.
08:42The good news is I'll pass him on the three lane here, and we won't have to get off the road for him.
08:47Now that is one big bulldozer.
09:00Today is Supercise Saturday.
09:03They don't want the supercise stuff to create chaos during the working week when everyone's trying to make a dollar.
09:09I can hear a bit of radio chatter going on, it might be a super-sized load in front of me.
09:23See I can't understand, that's why I'm not talking, I'm trying to work out what they're saying with that radio chatter.
09:29Communication's key I guess.
09:31It must be northbound, travelling the same direction as me.
09:35Have a great plane.
09:39They're big.
09:43They're really wide, they must be nine metres I reckon.
09:50With me being a little bit oversized and them being a giant bit oversized, the places for us to pass are really limited.
09:59I couldn't be stuck behind them for a hundred kilometres.
10:02What are they doing?
10:06What are they doing?
10:12Come on, Brady, you've got that bank you've been around, mate, please.
10:15Come on, mate. Good job.
10:17Righto, mate, sorry, glad to understand you. I'm into it, and I'm quick.
10:25It's gonna be tight.
10:27Don't move it, Tommy, now. We're fighting it now.
10:36Yeah, no, we won't, mate.
10:38Shit, there's a hole there.
10:40The whole leg.
10:52We'll get a better idea once we pull up to back in.
10:55Then we'll have a bit of time.
10:56If we do need to move on, then we'll do it.
10:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, sweet.
10:59House hauler Jack McRae is about to set sail
11:02on a high stakes job with a difference.
11:05The boat is custom built here.
11:08It's about 3.5 mil for this one.
11:11Only about 15 tonne, 8.5 metres wide, 16 long.
11:16This is the Cure 55 catamaran.
11:19Once we get down the other end,
11:20as long as these guys can do the trip safely
11:24and not hit anything, then we'll be away.
11:26Houses are easier.
11:28Boats are a lot more stressful.
11:30Difference between a $40,000 house
11:32and a multimillion-dollar boat.
11:34Tap a guidepost or something.
11:36You gotta scratch the shit out of it.
11:38This means I gotta be a bit more careful.
11:42Tonight, 11.30, we'll be here,
11:44get the police and pilots in,
11:46go for all that paperwork,
11:47then we'll take off down to Brisbane.
11:49From the manufacturers in Coolum Beach,
11:52Jack must weave the $3.5 million boat
11:55through narrow streets to the M1,
11:58then push on down the highway,
12:00avoiding low bridges and guardrails,
12:02before squeezing it through tight city streets
12:05to unload on the Brisbane River.
12:08The super-sized load requires a police escort,
12:11paid by the hour.
12:13Any delays will cost Jack's company money.
12:16So, yeah, it's not a cheap exercise.
12:18Keep coming, Corey.
12:21I've got Corey in the truck at the moment,
12:23so I'm on the phone with him,
12:25and then we'll just keep jiggling it in like this,
12:28just so we don't damage anything.
12:31The trailer's fully hydraulic,
12:33so lowest we can go is 900 deck height,
12:36up to 2.7.
12:37The $1.2 million lift trailer
12:40has independent steering on each axle
12:43and is also able to caterpillar
12:45using a hydraulic ram mounted on the truck.
12:49I've got my remote for my trailer
12:53and then the other remotes for the ram on the truck,
12:56so that's how we're jiggling it and knifing slowly.
12:59I've spent a little bit of extra time,
13:01didn't load it properly,
13:03safely about doing anything, no damage.
13:05Nice and easy.
13:11Just keep pushing that front over.
13:17Just turn, has it got anything on the dash?
13:25Just rev the out of it.
13:35No, it's gone again.
13:38OK.
13:39Just shut it down way down.
13:41The truck's not building up air enough to put it into gear.
13:47With the autos, you need air for the gearbox,
13:49and with no air, got no gears, so I can't move.
13:51It's going to be tight.
14:04Shit, there's a hole there.
14:10Thanks, fellas.
14:20Hello.
14:20They called me around.
14:24There's a big dip in the road.
14:26We've got to give each other space,
14:27but they're all talking about other stuff.
14:30In a situation like that, you just want clear direction.
14:34Normally, it's a lot more professional than that.
14:40We've got this oversized fuel tank.
14:42It's going to a remote community out the back of Halls Creek,
14:47and I'm on a tight time schedule to link up with the crane.
14:51I've got the last tank for Inga soap,
14:54and I have to meet with that crane on time,
14:56or it costs big money and big embarrassment.
15:00For me,
15:03it's stressful,
15:04but that's my job.
15:05I can hear on the wireless that there's two eight metres heading north.
15:14Yeah, 3.5, fellas.
15:26As the day goes along,
15:27we will catch up with the ones that left early Saturday morning.
15:31With a bit of luck,
15:31these pilots will be a bit more clear to understand.
15:34That is a serious piece of machinery
15:38that's all going up there to cart iron ore, I suppose.
15:47Roger, mate.
15:48Yeah, away you go, mate.
15:51Thanks for that.
15:52Go inside of the box.
15:54That's the other one.
15:56Thanks, gents.
16:17That's how it's done.
16:20Nice, clear communications.
16:23Everyone understands what's going on.
16:26Oh, shit.
16:35Yeah, mate, you're talking to the oversize with the tank on?
16:37Can we hear you got this to the road train assembly area, mate?
16:40Yeah, righto, mate.
16:42Yeah, righto.
16:43Thanks, sir.
16:46That's the bloody scalies.
16:49That's main road's inspectors,
16:51and they've just asked me to pull into the road train area,
16:55so, to quote,
16:57they can inspect my permits,
16:59load,
17:00and truck, etc.
17:01I think all my stuff's in order,
17:05but it's nerve-wracking.
17:08You just never know.
17:12I'm sweating it now.
17:15So many times in my life,
17:16I've come out badly out of these things.
17:18No, that's not good.
17:28That's not good at all.
17:31What's happened here is the chain
17:32has broken the landing leg away from the strut,
17:36so it's freewheeling.
17:38So what we're going to do,
17:41we're going to strap that to that
17:43to pull that back into where it should be.
17:46His landing leg,
17:47if it falls over,
17:48we'll take this trailer with it.
17:51Rex Riles is under the pump,
17:54hustling to get back to his hometown,
17:56Laverton,
17:56to prepare the horse racing track
17:58for their only race of the year.
18:01But although it's free to drive,
18:03the brutal Great Central Road
18:06is still taking its toll.
18:09I'm prepared if I get back on time.
18:12How are you?
18:15There's nothing we can do to help you?
18:17Nah, I can knock this out pretty quick.
18:19See you later. Take care.
18:21All right, Matt.
18:24People sort of look out for each other
18:26if there's any problems.
18:28You're a long way out.
18:29You're pretty isolated.
18:31And a long way from a flying doctor also.
18:34Can you imagine a blind doctor
18:35trying to land on these roads?
18:37It's not going to happen.
18:39A bit of common courtesy out here
18:41goes a long way.
18:42And that's all part of the outback way.
18:46Well, that's cross-chain.
18:48It's back.
18:48That's coming this way.
18:49So that's basically...
18:51It should not move.
18:53But we'll just keep an eye on it.
18:54Check it every hour.
18:55Back on the road.
19:07The trail has seemed to be travelling okay.
19:10Yeah, it seems pretty good.
19:14As you can see the transformed WA sign there
19:17on the left, the outback way.
19:18We're now officially in WA.
19:23We're a long way from home yet.
19:28Just going to eye the back here a bit
19:30and we'll just roll in nice and quiet
19:33and make sure you're ready for tomorrow.
19:36It's around 5km to go to get home.
19:51Hopefully being there before 4 o'clock
19:53depends on the conditions of the road, of course.
19:58Getting all sorts of different reports about the road.
20:01The road's pretty crook in places.
20:06That massive amount of rain's out here early in the year.
20:10And it's done a lot of damage.
20:13It gets worse as it goes further on.
20:15It's pretty rough up there.
20:17It's a bit of a plan in your head.
20:19A bit of an idea what you're going to do.
20:20But everything out here is subject to change.
20:23Minute by minute.
20:25When you come out here,
20:26most of you throw the clock out the window.
20:28Oh, for f***ing sake.
20:33This limestone shit stuff.
20:36Ripping your tyres.
20:38Worried we're going to miss the labour and races.
20:41If something's happened to me,
20:43it's not going to happen.
20:50Hey.
20:51Yeah, we can't even move this f***ing truck now.
20:54All right, see you soon.
20:54Jack McRae is sweating on the delay
20:57caused by the breakdown of his truck
21:00while under pressure
21:01to shift a $3.5 million catamaran.
21:06So I've got an ear leak
21:07and it's dropping out of gear.
21:09So I can't move.
21:10Waiting for the mechanic.
21:11He's close by.
21:12A lot of ear lines under there
21:19so it could just be a broken one
21:21so it ain't got a popped off.
21:29Well, you don't be a mechanic.
21:30She's fixed.
21:44Looks like it.
21:45So back around her.
21:46Pick it up.
21:49Straighten up.
21:50Time to get off these cradles
21:57and into the water.
21:59Yeah, get rid of them now if you want.
22:02This is picked up now.
22:03That's where it's staying on the trailer.
22:06So we'll get rid of these cradles.
22:08Pull it out so you can tie it down.
22:09This is the crucial fit.
22:13Getting it out of the factory
22:14without any scratches or bumps.
22:19100mm each side to get out the doors.
22:21They definitely made them as big as they could.
22:24That's straight up, Corey.
22:26There's it tight.
22:29I mean, another two, Corey.
22:30Two straight forward, then turn it hard.
22:34Lift the whole trailer up.
22:36Straight over these bollards here.
22:37Stupid place to put a bollard.
22:40Tell you now.
22:43Right, nice and easy.
22:47Woo!
22:48Let's swap it over.
22:49She's out in one piece.
22:52It's hiding.
22:52Bit tight.
22:53Got it out.
22:56Time begins tonight.
23:02Just getting ready to move this catamaran.
23:05It's, um, first time I've been back in a truck in about six years.
23:09So let's see if I remember what to do.
23:12Jack's co-driver for the journey is Ashley Mackay,
23:16part of the family that owns Mackay & Sons.
23:19I moved up north.
23:20The last six years I've been driving coal trains.
23:23You can run from the family business,
23:25but you can't hide.
23:26So here I am.
23:28Ashley has been tasked with helping Jack
23:31by the company's boss, her brother, Robbie.
23:34I don't know if you call her the helper.
23:36She's Robbie's sister,
23:38so she gets easy jobs and doesn't do much.
23:41Right.
23:42Let's f***ing go.
23:46Don't brush me in any trees or nothing.
23:48It's going to be a slow run to the highway.
23:56Oh, just trying to get rid of a sign there,
23:58so get through.
24:02Driver not hit anything with the boat.
24:05It's a $3.5 million boat,
24:08so we don't want to brush a twig with it.
24:11There'd be a big tax deduction from Jack's pay,
24:15is what it would be.
24:16Hey, Corey, watch that tail swing on that sign there.
24:20Yeah, I'll do that.
24:23He's going to play it up, play it up.
24:27Shit.
24:33Oh, for f***ing sake.
24:38It's choppy at the moment.
24:40Just tiptoeing along here.
24:42Trying to find the right speed,
24:43so, you know, knocking the gear around,
24:45that's the hard part.
24:47I'm pulling up a bit here now
24:48just to try and reset what I'm doing.
24:53Rex Riles is racing the clock,
24:55desperate to get his valuable tipper trailers back home
24:58with enough time to prepare the local race course
25:01for the Labourton Cup.
25:03I'm going to try and be in Labourton today,
25:06no later.
25:06There's a five-metre up there in front of you, mate.
25:14Oh, s***.
25:15We've got a five-metre loader in front of us.
25:17He's going pretty slow.
25:19Let's see if we can get some conversation going.
25:22Maybe we can get around him.
25:25There's a fair bit of a hand out there.
25:27Just got to keep talking to each other.
25:29Just communication is a key word here.
25:30All right, I'll start building her up a bit.
25:36I'll come past.
25:38I'll go a little bit quicker than them.
25:44Yeah, right up, I'll come around now.
25:48Yeah, just got to watch it through here.
25:51Try and point them blowouts and stuff like that.
25:54Everyone's happy.
26:03It's all done.
26:04Honest and safe.
26:07We're past.
26:08And I'm trying to keep the dust out of his face, too,
26:11if I can.
26:12So I'll just whip it back over here.
26:13The bin's changed again.
26:21Can I get around you?
26:23There is a trucker sitting behind me.
26:26All those fellas that are traveling west,
26:28I'm going to pull over to the right outside the road.
26:30You want to come around, you can.
26:35I can leave over, take the dust with me,
26:38so they're going to play a light up and tight.
26:40They come around.
26:42Nice habit.
26:47Yeah, buddy.
26:49No worries, mate.
26:51Dust is a big issue.
26:53Drive through dust, and that's where accidents happen.
26:59Ah, shit.
27:00There is a truck coming.
27:07The main road's inspectors just asked me to pull into the road
27:11train, the terminal up here,
27:13so they can inspect by permits, load, truck, et cetera.
27:20I'm sweating it now.
27:21Oh, so many times in my life, I've come out badly out of these things.
27:28I'll just grab those permits, all right?
27:36Steve, are you aware that we now do this stuff on the iPad now, matey?
27:40All we do is I just feed you a thing to your email,
27:45and it comes up when you're phoned in and there, mate.
27:47Right, well, it doesn't really,
27:48because I don't do emails, the missus does,
27:50but that's all right, this.
27:52What's our weight, you reckon, when we're running?
27:54We wouldn't be running more than 22, would we?
27:55No, that's 15 ton, that tank.
27:57Oh, that's fine.
27:58Oh, there you go, 508.
28:04What have you got?
28:0551, there you go.
28:06Thank you, sir.
28:07Larpy.
28:09This truck's had $200,000 spent on it in the last 12 months.
28:13Wouldn't it be cheaper if just you actually have retired
28:15and said, mate, we'll just sort of, you know,
28:17save the money, put it towards the old Steve's pension fund?
28:19Steady up on the retirement word, son.
28:23Brakes are all pretty reasonable and all that.
28:24The brakes are more than reasonable.
28:26Have you spent money there as well, haven't you, Steve?
28:29We spend money on them all the time.
28:30Well, that's a truck, isn't it?
28:32It's the money pit.
28:34How wide are we, Steve, do we?
28:35Exactly 3.5.
28:373.5 exactly.
28:38Spot the dot.
28:393.5.
28:40Do it.
28:41Honest?
28:42That's it.
28:43You want it.
28:45If you want to go across the base,
28:47you want to go across the base.
28:49All right, there, Steve.
28:50There we go, Steve.
28:51Pull that there, Vox.
28:52He doesn't like my eyes.
28:55Well, there you go, mate.
28:56It shrunk.
28:56The actual heat shrunk it.
28:583.35 for last you do us, buddy.
29:01You've done well.
29:02We'll give you actual cold star on your head
29:04to say thanks for coming.
29:06Right, fellas, thank you.
29:07Have a good day.
29:08I'm going to get moving now.
29:11We're back rolling again.
29:15Those blokes, they were decent blokes.
29:17They're doing their job, but I've lost an AI.
29:21That's 100k I've got to find tomorrow.
29:23Hampered by frustrating delays, Steve is at risk of missing his rendezvous with the crane needed
29:30to unload to unload the 84,000-litre diesel tank he's delivering to a remote community.
29:37Being oversized, I can't make up time.
29:39I'll have to pull up shortly.
29:41Call it the end of day.
29:42We're coming up on Mungina Gorge, which is a big drop-off.
29:48It's getting close to dark.
29:52I've got to pull up and get off the road.
29:54That's the law.
29:55Yeah, I know, dog.
30:03And now I'm really pushing light.
30:06It's time to think about pulling up.
30:09I'll give Tony a call.
30:11I'm really keen to know how the boys have got on out there.
30:15Tony's the bloke with the other tanks and the crane.
30:19All going well.
30:20Tony would have been unloaded,
30:21and the crane should be heading over to the second point
30:25if everything's going all right with him.
30:30Yeah, Tony, got you.
30:32Oh, that's good, mate.
30:33That's good.
30:34Yeah, no, no, I'm all right.
30:36The dash fell out of it.
30:38You're joking.
30:41All right.
30:42I'll just have to stop at the corner
30:44and wait for Ranga and the crane to finish and get out.
30:47All right, mate.
30:48No worries.
30:49You have a good one.
30:49Thanks.
30:50The road's 20 times worse than what they thought
30:53to the extent that basically the dashboard fell out of the crane.
30:59The crane and the second tank have to come out 240-odd K
31:03to meet me at the corner, and that's my worry.
31:08I won't sleep tonight till I can find out where he's at.
31:11I can't really see much out of the truck,
31:27so you're relying on them to tell you what's going on.
31:31Jack and Ashley are responsible for delivering $3.5 million worth of carbon fibre yacht
31:50before their oversized permit runs out at daybreak.
31:55I'll open up a little bit, so I've got out of the tighter stuff.
32:00Make up a bit of time.
32:02Apart from really, yeah, a few bridges,
32:04there should hopefully be smooth sailing.
32:06All right, four, there's one line.
32:10You're going to call your right.
32:11Three lanes down on the roof.
32:17Good steady, Jack.
32:19Someone spot that roof.
32:22All right, all right.
32:23Good.
32:24Captain, looking at the passenger.
32:30All right.
32:31All back.
32:37What a trucking.
32:38Another Saturday.
32:39Really?
32:48All the way down here to the bridge.
32:52I got a trailer on the left tree and a guardrail on the right.
33:01Yeah.
33:04Dickheads, put in your trailers.
33:08Look at these shit smokes.
33:17Ah, shit.
33:18There is a truck coming.
33:27One more on you.
33:28Yeah, one more on me too, Colin.
33:31Everyone's pretty conscious of road conditions and driving at good speed, but the dust is the one you look out for.
33:39On a mission to get his expensive new trailers home undamaged and have enough time to prepare his local track for the Laverton horse races, Rex has hit the final stretch after surviving over 1,000 kilometres of diabolical dirt road.
33:57Bitch, isn't that beautiful?
34:01Like a dream come true.
34:05There's a smile on your face, doesn't it?
34:06There we go.
34:07There we go.
34:08There we go.
34:0960k to do.
34:10Then we'll be home.
34:14Looking forward to a cold beer, I think.
34:22Come back.
34:23We'll see the new tippers.
34:24Home sweet home.
34:25It's very good to be back.
34:27There you go, fellas.
34:28What a trip.
34:29What have you got here?
34:30Get that coldy into you, mate.
34:31Oh, you're bloody legends.
34:32Yeah, good luck.
34:33Good health.
34:34Thanks a lot.
34:35Here's tears.
34:37We'll break it up tomorrow morning and I've got to get to the race course.
34:43Here we are at Laverton race.
34:44Oh you're bloody legends. Yeah, good luck. Good health. Thanks a lot. I'll miss tears.
34:59We'll break it up tomorrow morning and I've got to get to the race course.
35:02Here we are at Labeland Race Club, finally got here. The job is now to get the water on the track,
35:19keep the track moist so that when the horses get on here it's good on their hooves,
35:24trying to keep an optimum track surface.
35:26Rich doesn't only grade the track, he donates all the sand because it's only used once a year.
35:35He's a fantastic little man. It's just good to be back here in Laverton and be here for the races.
35:42I'm looking forward to the weekend to catch up with all the family and all my mates and friends.
35:47I think it should be good.
35:56Do you need milk from the leaves? Leaves don't really matter, it's just like branches and shit.
36:05You're right on the tree at the moment.
36:11You're past that.
36:14How are you looking down the driver's side, Dylan?
36:16You're good on the driver's side.
36:18Jack McRae is in charge of a high-stakes, multi-million-dollar job for Mackay & Sons,
36:27with the help of his boss's sister, Ashley.
36:31Oh, she's about to go to sleep. She's f***ing useless.
36:34Wake me up when we get there.
36:39Two minutes to four, pretty much perfect.
36:41Less than two, can't we?
36:43Like, is this the intersection I turn it?
36:51It's just at the end of this ride, that's where it's going.
36:54Is that hot, is it?
36:57It looks like it was the worst of it.
37:02Shit!
37:05Go to me, even a little bit, Josh.
37:10Head side and off.
37:13You got an inch on the driver's side, Jack.
37:18That's what I'm doing.
37:24Real steady.
37:26Whoa, whoa, whoa.
37:32Real steady.
37:39Real steady.
37:4020 mil.
37:41Keep going.
37:47Okay, you're all steering it over now.
37:50We're here.
37:51This is where it's going, into the yard.
37:55That's it.
37:57Done.
38:00Boys killed it.
38:01They always do well.
38:02There's a reason, you know, why they have been doing it so long.
38:05Another one ticked off.
38:08On their stands now, so pull the trailer out.
38:11Yeah, I'm home for breakfast.
38:12It's, yeah, five past five.
38:15We made it, mate.
38:16We made it all the way.
38:17No damage.
38:18Nothing to worry about.
38:19They did it again.
38:20We made it.
38:33Better suck it in here.
38:34We're going to meet on the bridge.
38:38It's 8.5, mate.
38:40We should be good.
38:40If I have a good run today, I should get close to my 1,000 kilometres.
38:57But, yeah, it's not without its stress.
39:01Steve's racing to deliver a 15-ton fuel tank,
39:05essential for providing power to a remote community.
39:08But the crane required to lift the tank could be delayed,
39:12costing Steve precious time and money.
39:16Yesterday, Tony said to me,
39:18the crane might have some mechanical problems.
39:21This morning, there was absolutely no sign of any problems with the crane.
39:24It leaves you just stressing and worrying about what's going on.
39:29And all I can do is I'll get to the top of the Tadamai Road and wait.
39:39Well, here we go.
39:40We've got a quad to deal with here.
39:42Apart from this beautiful scenery,
39:45you'd know you're in the Pilbara just by the quads.
39:48They're coming at you every five seconds.
39:50You know you're on that big conveyor belt,
39:52grinding its way into Port Hadlan,
39:55with thousands upon thousands of tonne of iron ore
39:59rolling down the road towards that port.
40:07Coming up behind AC25 and I'll get you around.
40:12Yeah, I'll ride you 25. I'm into it.
40:14These quads weighing 180 or 200 and something tonnes,
40:2660 metres long,
40:28carting massive amounts of iron ore.
40:33They're all pretty good money driving them.
40:35They're all seriously good money.
40:37We've got a lady driving this one.
40:39Thank you. Have a good day.
40:44I've left the Pilbara, I'm into the Kimberley and on the single lane road to the single lane bridges.
41:07I'll get up the road here a bit.
41:20I'll pull up to my meeting point.
41:22I might get there right on time.
41:28I haven't got a phone message yet from Tony.
41:30I just hope things are good out there.
41:31I'm still in that void of no information.
41:41Well, this is the Tanami.
41:44I've just got here.
41:45This is where I'll wait for the boys to come back from Bilaluna and Balga where they've dropped their tanks.
41:51Crane's going to come out.
41:52We go to Ring of Soak, drop mine.
42:03That is a little bit of a drama.
42:05Yes, sir.
42:05It couldn't be.
42:06OK.
42:08Right, mate.
42:09No worries.
42:09Thanks.
42:12Crane's hydraulic tank has got a split in it.
42:15They're going to pull a hydraulic tank out, race it into Halls Creek, get it welded and go back.
42:22Everything that's operated on the crane is operated by hydraulics.
42:25They're great big hydraulic rams that push the boom in and out.
42:29They're hydraulic motors that turn the cable and bring the cable in and out.
42:34They control the steering on the crane.
42:36They've got no choice.
42:37It's going to cost two days, a couple of trips in and out.
42:42So that will have me sitting here for a couple of days.
42:46And after a day, it starts to cost me money.
42:49There's absolutely nothing I can do.
42:54Absolutely nothing.
43:06It's blown through the tyres, but it's all the belt and shit's all jammed up inside the brake drum.
43:15Watch out there, car.
43:22It is very isolated.
43:24You break down, you're on your own.
43:25If we bored ourselves, because I'm top heavy, I've got to go dead centre.
43:30If I go to the head, the camber is gazing.
43:34You can control it quite easily.
43:39Here we are back on the Duncan Road, I know well.
43:41Cross our fingers that it's not going to rain.
43:43Oh my God, there's raindrops on the window.
43:47Trying to beat that rain, but the lightning keeps starting fires in front of me.
43:51This is not good.
