06:35I do remember seeing people from my high school
06:37and also it shocked me that some people
06:39who probably had like a multicultural background
06:41were also showing up wearing Australian flags
06:43I remember seeing my mum and dad
06:45and a lot of like the older generation
06:47they kind of all come down to support as well
06:49It had a festive feel about it
06:53And I said, oh look, this will all blow over
06:55nothing will happen here
06:56this will be all good
06:57I noticed that people were starting to drink
07:04I didn't drink that day at all
07:05The only time I really got concerned
07:09was when slabs of beer were flowing around the place
07:12You'd be photographing kids drinking
07:14and the thing that was sort of weird
07:16was there were cops in amongst there tolerating it
07:19It gets to a point
07:21there's just too many people
07:22to try and control that bringing of alcohol
07:26And it just sort of progressively got messier
07:28There was guys I knew sitting in their cars
07:31and all of a sudden they're drinking
07:32and then someone gave them a megaphone
07:34and I'm like, where do they get a megaphone from?
07:41Then you start seeing signs
07:43The sign that was around a fair bit was
07:45we grew here, you flew here
07:47That's when it sort of hit me
07:49Oh, this is really getting racially motivated
07:51There was TV guys filming guys drinking
07:54like encouraging
07:55you know, wave the flags
07:56Put me right off and thinking
07:59this is also creating it, right?
08:01This is what our grandfathers fought for
08:03to protect this
08:04so we can enjoy it
08:06and we don't need these Lebanese
08:08and the Lebanese
08:09to take it away from us!
08:11They thought they were in the right
08:13so they're all there going
08:14you know, I'm strong
08:16standing up for Australia
08:17I was watching people get drunker and start making bad decisions for themselves
08:22I was like, can we just like wind back a little bit here?
08:24It's just a whole pile of drunken surfers
08:27except every now and then you came across somebody
08:30with a UHF walkie-talkie
08:33you know, nationalist guys
08:36trying to organise people
08:38You could tell that they're not from the Shire
08:39handing out racist flyers
08:41and trying to egg people on
08:43and get people upset
08:45I'd notified the police radio
08:47that there was far too many people on the road
08:49yesterday and go, ah, this might get ugly
08:52and eventually that's exactly what I was
08:54I was the licensee of North East Cronulla Hotel
09:02which is right opposite the beach
09:03I was actually off work
09:05I knew that they had prepared for the day
09:07by putting extra security on
09:09We'd moved down into Dunningham Park
09:12there was two young Middle Eastern looking guys
09:15who had sort of been noticed
09:16At first it's just one person seems to go
09:20oh, I reckon that guy might be Lebanese
09:22and then everybody just crowds in around
09:24But all of a sudden it all started to form
09:26and it all rushed across the road to North East
09:28Coming through Cronulla in the car
09:35we stopped at the traffic lights
09:37right at that point in time
09:38there was a young male of Middle Eastern appearance
09:40it felt like a thousand people chasing this one guy
09:43and that's probably the first time that I felt scared
09:47I just thought, oh, this is real
09:48I suppose the protection mechanism kicks in
09:55and I said to my wife, you drive
09:56I jumped out of the car
09:57and ushered him into the hotel for his protection
10:00you know, you couldn't actually see what was happening
10:07so it was more confusing than anything
10:09and the poor bouncer at North East
10:11who was like a Tongan or a Kiwi
10:13they're just going, what's going on?
10:15and he barricaded the door
10:16so there's like a thousand people
10:18all standing, chanting, just going mad
10:21that's when it turned feral
10:31I definitely remember him being scared
10:32I was reassuring him and saying
10:34look, you know, we'll make sure you're okay
10:36people were sort of trying to get in there
10:38because they were so revved up
10:40we were just in shock
10:41it would have been so scary for those people
10:43being chased
10:44they come running through and just throw a punch out of the top
10:51they think they're not going to get caught
10:54and the police were on the scene not long after
10:56and they took him home
10:57like it was just shock and embarrassment
10:59to think, wow, this is happening in my hometown
11:01and, you know, it's literally unfolding where I work
11:05we went straight into
11:07well, we're going to photograph this as we see it
11:10I was behind still and I just took pictures
11:12but it's a convict
11:13because I actually live almost in that street
11:15you're in your own hood
11:17you're shooting people
11:18you know do bad things that
11:20you know they're going to pay for
11:28so my friend used to work in a service station
11:31right next to the Cronulla station
11:33so he called me up
11:34as I come over
11:35there's a lot of people coming
11:36so maybe a festival or something
11:38let's go check it out
11:39I was born and raised in Bangladesh
11:41I was an international student
11:43I'd never been to Cronulla
11:44but it sounded pretty good
11:45I was like, alright, I'm doing nothing
11:46so better than just sitting at home
11:48everyone was kind of out the front of Northies
11:51saying racist chants and things
11:53and I thought, we need to stay back
11:55this is getting a bit unsafe
11:57so we were driving from the service station
11:59towards the Cronulla beach
12:00a car, my friend, actually bought it from
12:02a Lebanese guy from Bankstown
12:03it was a Honda Prelude
12:05with orange flame on the side
12:07black hood
12:08pop-up lights
12:10it was probably the most lit looking car
12:12that he can find
12:13we're all at the pub
12:14and everyone's waving and shouting
12:16and carrying on
12:16you'll come along
12:18sing Matilda with you
12:20there's a lot of people
12:21I didn't know what would happen
12:22like, what, music or drinks or barbecue
12:24or something, whatever
12:25these poor innocent Indians turn up
12:27and everyone just turned
12:28and ran back across the road
12:30we saw one person running towards us
12:33with a trillion flag
12:34and he yelled
12:35are you Aussie?
12:38and then there's like
12:40more people
12:40and my friend
12:41I think he realised something
12:43at that point
12:43so he stopped
12:45and he started reversing
12:46the police radio started to chatter up
12:49it started to abuse
12:50there were Pakistanis
12:52that had come down in a car
12:53the guy with the Australian flag
12:55he smashed the front windshield
12:57someone jumped on it
12:59in a matter of seconds
13:01there were so many people
13:02punching in the window
13:04throwing the beer bottles
13:05they were just pushing the car
13:07I remember the car was going
13:08like that was born
13:09the crowd was starting to harass anyone
13:11that even looked
13:12with the lease
13:12they were trying to open the door
13:14but I'm just holding on to it
13:15with my life
13:16credit goes to my friend
13:18so he just took off
13:20there was a police officer
13:27in the middle of the roundabout
13:29I put the window down
13:31and he said
13:31what are you two idiots doing here
13:33don't you know what happened in here
13:34he said
13:35go
13:35drive
13:36the rumour started
13:57that there was a big group
13:59of Lebanese boys
14:00on the train
14:01and that they'd come to fight
14:03there'd be the little rumours
14:05going through
14:05we suspect it had something to do
14:06with the guys with the UHF
14:08I'm just then seeing
14:09a swarm of people
14:10just rushing
14:11like a stampede
14:12it's like the head of the snake
14:17at first it went to the
14:18that car
14:19and then they turned
14:20and that snake
14:21went up to the train station
14:22we just kind of stood
14:27and just watched
14:28people just egging them on
14:29like yeah go get them
14:30go get them
14:31then they just see these couple of guys
14:32who don't actually look Lebanese or anything
14:36I mean I guess they're expecting
14:37Osama Bin Laden to come off the train or something
14:39and we knew our friends were heading up towards that
14:42it definitely had that sort of pack mentality
14:44and then one of them just decides to
14:46you know punch him
14:47and these guys on the train didn't expect it
14:49they go back inside the train
14:51I was going guys guys no back the fuck off
14:55and they just absolutely just pushed me out of the road
14:58like wild dogs
15:00they'd smelt the fear of these guys
15:01and just went after them
15:03and then that's when our hero
15:10the big cop
15:11he came in just swinging
15:13just started clearing
15:16the actual train station itself
15:18so we were photographing this stuff
15:20I was actually
15:21I was pretty shook up
15:23and when you're thrown into position
15:25and there aren't any cops around you
15:27having to make that horrible decision
15:29to try and stop these guys
15:30and so I didn't get
15:31I did not get a good frame from that
15:33from inside
15:34Craig Greenhill got great photos
15:36he also intervened as well
15:39but he also got some very good photos
15:41I was just grossed out by it
15:45like what are you doing
15:45I remember that being a thought
15:47what are you doing
15:48it made me feel sick
15:49that my local community
15:50was just so stupid
15:51doing something that was just
15:53had no purpose
15:54we just kind of
15:55stopped for a little while
15:57and just went
15:58whoa
15:58like what just happened
15:59this has just gone
16:00in a totally opposite direction
16:02to what you know
16:03the idea was of the day
16:04and then I remember calling my mum
16:06she said
16:07you don't catch the trains
16:08I'll send your brother down
16:10to come pick you up
16:11in the end
16:11I left
16:12and I literally pulled over
16:13and almost threw up
16:14I just couldn't believe
16:16in how stupid
16:17we were
16:19as it progressed into the day
16:26and got worse and worse
16:28it's just like
16:29oh my god
16:29I can't believe this is happening
16:30and then all of a sudden
16:32two Middle Easterners
16:33came racing towards me
16:34whole little crowd
16:35chasing them
16:36myself and Andrew Mears
16:38and a couple other photographers
16:39were photographing this stuff
16:40and then they split up
16:41one was pushed over a ute
16:43the adrenaline goes in
16:45I was able to push my way through
16:47and I had to capsicum spray
16:49one gentleman
16:50that was holding him down
16:51I've got photographs
16:52of him being protected
16:54by the cop
16:54while they're throwing bottles
16:55and stuff
16:56you don't even feel
16:57things hit you
16:58I remember the photographer
16:59walking backwards
17:00kind of shielding us
17:02so I was quite happy
17:03just to see him there
17:04and the gentleman
17:06I was trying to protect
17:07he was hanging on to me
17:08for room life
17:09tells me that
17:11they've got me by the leg
17:12luckily
17:13the dog squad guy
17:14I was able to get that guy off
17:16I wasn't fearful for myself
17:18he was the one
17:19I felt that his life
17:20was in peril
17:21once I got to the police car
17:25we started to get pelted
17:26by rocks
17:27and I put the siren on
17:28the siren's pretty loud
17:30so you can't stand in front of it
17:32for too long
17:32then I notified the police radio
17:36that we'd both suffered injuries
17:38and we were heading up
17:39to Sutherland Hospital
17:40I was at Australian Association
17:44press photographer
17:45it was my day off
17:47it came over the radio
17:48that they're rioting
17:49and I knew I had to get there
17:51got there late in the afternoon
17:57but they were still there
17:59drunk as guns
18:00the cops came in with riot police
18:07and dispersed
18:08when you have such an adrenaline rush
18:14the down rush
18:15is very disconcerting
18:17it's the first time I've ever got teary
18:19after an event
18:20I really had to take some
18:22a little bit of time
18:24to compose myself
18:25back to normality
18:26if you want to call it that
18:27we had to go and write a report
18:30the police officer asked me
18:31describe yourself
18:33your colour
18:33I felt a bit funny
18:37I would say
18:37I think when you're in that kind of mindset
18:39that alright
18:40I'm getting targeted
18:41it feels like everyone's targeting
18:42a couple of them even asked me
18:43where am I from
18:44which got my back up
18:46being of a Greek background
18:47and seeing the racism
18:49it made me angry at the time
18:51we filed our pictures
18:52it's breaking news
18:53I knew it was going to be a powder kick
18:55because for every action
18:56there's a reaction now
18:58racial tension boils into all out violence in Cronulla
19:08injuries, arrests and unwanted visitors terrorised
19:15on that Sunday
19:16I watched the 6pm news
19:18it's the first time in my life
19:20and probably the only time in my life
19:22I've ever bawled while watching the news
19:25I was a medical practitioner in South West Sydney
19:28and I was also active in the local community
19:31I saw the news
19:32I saw the pictures
19:33I felt awful
19:35to see so many people
19:37thousands of people
19:38wanting to get rid of us
19:40it was truly horrible
19:41I remember I sent a message to my dad
19:44saying
19:44I am embarrassed to be Australian
19:47this is the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen
19:49I started to get phone calls
19:51people were angry for what they saw
19:53I got text messages saying
19:55don't leave the house
19:56if you're a visible Muslim woman
19:58if you wear the hijab
19:59stay indoors
20:00I remember getting a call from my dad as well
20:02saying stay away from those places
20:03and I didn't tell him anything about what happened
20:05I didn't want them to worry
20:07so I didn't even say anything
20:08I was like alright no no I'm not going anywhere
20:10and I was fearful
20:11that some members of our community
20:13is going to retaliate
20:14for people to see
20:15other people saying
20:17we don't want you in this country
20:19we grew here
20:20you flew here
20:21it was beyond traumatising
20:23I called the New South Wales Police Commissioner then
20:27to alert him
20:27not to underestimate
20:29the retaliation that's going to take place
20:31I started driving around
20:32getting reports
20:33that the police were stopping traffic
20:36and checking for car loads
20:37of Middle Eastern youth
20:40they're definitely not going to respond
20:42just at the beaches of Cronulla
20:45they wanted to respond everywhere
20:46I knew where ethnics go
20:49and that is Brighton Lees Sands
20:51so I raced off up there
20:52I was actually in the garden all day
20:54I didn't even watch the news
20:56I didn't know what's happening
20:57my wife said
20:57let's go down
20:58have a coffee with a friend down in Brighton
21:00I saw a group of people
21:02yeah a big group of people
21:03the young boys
21:04looked like Lebanese
21:06Middle Eastern
21:06directly across the road from us
21:08as soon as I saw the big group of people
21:09I knew what was going on
21:11they're planning something
21:12one of the boys climbed on a power pole
21:15and I see him dragging the flag down
21:17the Australian flag
21:18and I said to my wife
21:19they're going to desecrate the flag
21:21I pulled up
21:22jumped out of the car
21:24left the cameras in
21:25because I didn't want them to know
21:26there was a media photographer
21:28and yelled out to one of them
21:30where are we going brothers
21:31and they said Marubra
21:33to get them back
21:35because by then
21:36there was a lot of roadblocks
21:37in Cronulla
21:38I felt like speaking to them
21:39like a father would speak to sons
21:40what the hell are you doing boys
21:41on the other hand
21:42things could be twisted around
21:43because I am at the end of the day Lebanese
21:45and I could be seen to be the perpetrator
21:48and I tried to follow them
21:50but they all had WRXs
21:51you weren't going to catch them
21:52but they were going to Marubra
21:54so I started looking through Marubra
21:56then I came across cars
21:57which they smashed up
21:58you know the Anglo kids had their day
22:00and the ethnic kids
22:01they had their night
22:03it was tip for tat
22:04when you see young impressionable
22:07children
22:08feel that way
22:10towards our national flag
22:11there's something terribly wrong
22:13I got home
22:14switched the TV on
22:15and it was all over the news
22:17just when police thought
22:18they dealt with the racial unrest
22:20the retaliation began
22:21a 23 year old man
22:23was stabbed in the back
22:23trying to defend
22:24his female companions
22:26from a vengeful mob
22:27men of Middle Eastern appearance
22:29involved in a standoff
22:30they knew they were being targeted
22:33they felt targeted
22:34I understood where they were coming from
22:36and the anger they had in them
22:38I didn't agree with it
22:39but I understood it
22:40the next day
22:46Cronulla was a mess
22:48I think that there was a lot of
22:50next day hangovers
22:51of like
22:51oh gosh
22:52what just happened
22:53I went to work the next day
22:54as per normal
22:55a young man
22:56who's a regular client
22:57he was about 18 at the time
22:59he said look
22:59give me a short haircut
23:01he had a long surfy hair
23:02so he walked out
23:03looking like a different person
23:04so when he walked out
23:06I sat down
23:07and opened the newspaper
23:09there he was
23:09on the second page
23:10on his chest
23:12it says
23:12we grew here
23:13you flew here
23:14and the headlines were
23:16the ugly faces of the Shire
23:17or something like that
23:18the next day
23:19the media were like
23:20oh wow
23:20racist shame
23:21and it was just funny to me
23:23because I was like
23:24you were literally
23:25stirring up fears
23:27about Lebanese Australians
23:28in the lead up
23:29and now you're calling it a shame
23:31bosses rang up
23:32and basically said
23:33you know
23:33you've done a good job
23:34well done
23:35now do you want to do
23:36a media interview
23:36Constable Smith
23:39has been singled out
23:40as one of yesterday's
23:41police heroes
23:42once I got him
23:43in the police car
23:44and we left the area
23:46he thanked me
23:47for saving his life
23:48next there was
23:49a bit more of like
23:50processing
23:51like what exactly happened
23:53obviously
23:53don't want to get into
23:55that same position again
23:56that's what I said
23:57actually in the interview
23:58if they could manage
23:59to get ourselves
24:00any one of us
24:01out of the car
24:01they could have killed us
24:03both reluctantly
24:04returned to Cronulla
24:05today to give
24:06statements to police
24:07I remember the
24:08news team
24:09picked us up
24:09and took us back
24:10to Cronulla
24:11as we're driving back
24:13and I'm like
24:13where are we
24:14like
24:14I'm like
24:16I received a call
24:17from the premier's office
24:19I was asked to attend
24:20a meeting
24:21to try and work
24:22through the issues
24:23the mood in that room
24:25was tense
24:26we were angry
24:27but at the same time
24:28we pledged that
24:29we would be side by side
24:30with the police
24:31still
24:32I was worried
24:33that it's going to get worse
24:34I was working
24:40at the Lebanese
24:41Muslim Association
24:42right across from
24:43the Kemba Mosque
24:44and the threats
24:46started to come through
24:47I don't even know
24:48how many death threats
24:49I received
24:49there was message
24:51circulating
24:52they're coming
24:52to burn the mosque
24:53down
24:54that same mob
24:55in Cronulla
24:56are going to come down
24:57and bomb the mosque
24:59so then text messages
25:00started flowing
25:01protect the Kemba Mosque
25:03that night
25:03couldn't believe
25:05what I saw
25:06there was thousands of people
25:09not only Arabs
25:11and Muslims
25:12you had Italians
25:13you had Greeks
25:14there was a lot of young men
25:16mainly people of colour
25:18there is only one common thing
25:20about them
25:21their anger
25:21you could see it in their face
25:23and there is
25:25a lot of talk
25:26among them
25:26we don't need the police
25:27to protect us
25:28we can protect ourselves
25:29all that sort of talk
25:31at the moment
25:32we're above
25:32the Kemba Mosque
25:33where we estimate
25:34more than a thousand people
25:35have gathered
25:36that is obviously
25:37of some concern
25:37to police
25:38one of the people
25:39he opened out
25:40the boots of his car
25:41and he had
25:42a few fire guns
25:44serious weapon
25:45and then I said
25:46please please
25:46close it down
25:47we don't need
25:47this gun
25:48to defend ourselves
25:49there was a lot
25:50of people
25:50from the community
25:51trying to
25:52bring back
25:53a sense of calm
25:54the local
25:55chefs
25:56and imams
25:56really went out
25:57of their way
25:58to convince them
25:59not to do anything
26:00a few hours passed
26:01it was becoming
26:02apparent to everyone
26:03whatever people
26:04they're coming
26:05to attack the mosque
26:06it's not going to
26:06eventuate
26:07but there was a lot
26:08of talk of
26:09okay how far
26:10is this going
26:10to escalate
26:11they didn't bomb
26:11the mosque today
26:12are they going
26:12to bomb it tomorrow
26:13you know
26:14when you go
26:14through such hostility
26:16it isn't something
26:17you just pack up
26:18in the back of your brain
26:19and move on
26:19it's something
26:20it's the beginning
26:22of something
26:22a lot of young people
26:24went in convoy
26:25towards Cronulla
26:26we should have passed
26:27over 60 car lives
26:28of 5 to 6 people
26:30per car
26:31are all armed
26:32and heading
26:33for Cronulla
26:33we knew that
26:34there are some people
26:35who wanted to take
26:36the lobe
26:37in their hands
26:38it was late that night
26:40and we were listening
26:40to the talkback radio
26:41and a lady had called up
26:43a couple of streets
26:44away from us
26:44and she said
26:45there's cars coming
26:46and we can hear them coming
26:48and then she started
26:49getting really upset
26:50and she said
26:50like they're smashing
26:51up my car
26:51they're smashing up my car
26:52and then we were
26:53sitting inside
26:54and then we could hear them
26:55down the street
26:56there's guys
26:57just baseball batting
26:58every car
26:58on Lua Road
26:59they were as bad
27:00as the guys
27:02it was the same thing
27:03we just panicked
27:04and we turned off
27:05all the lights
27:06and locked our house up
27:07and we went and hid
27:08I think eventually
27:09after half an hour
27:10or so
27:10they'd moved on
27:11I don't know
27:12I guess there was
27:12a sense of shock
27:13what had happened
27:14and how it had escalated
27:16like that
27:16the bosses were concerned
27:18that this situation
27:19had opened
27:20a hornet's nest
27:21that the Sutherland Shire
27:22people had no idea
27:24what they've done
27:25days afterwards
27:30there was a huge
27:31police presence
27:32patrolling
27:32to keep everything
27:34on a tight lid
27:35it was still tense
27:37it was still talked about
27:38for months
27:39the beaches were quiet
27:40there's no one around
27:41a lot of people
27:42stayed at home
27:43they didn't take
27:44their kids
27:44outside
27:45I think
27:46the initial couple
27:47of weeks
27:47was a bit tough
27:48why this happened
27:49to me
27:49and why
27:50would you guys
27:51do that
27:51you can't just
27:52start bidding people up
27:54everyone
27:55was remorseful
27:57there's a picture
27:57of the beach
27:57the next day
27:58someone had written
28:00in seaweed
28:00on the beach
28:01saying they were sorry
28:03which I thought
28:03was pretty good
28:04it was clearly awful
28:05there was innocent people
28:07being beaten up
28:08and not being able
28:09to do much about it
28:10it shouldn't have happened
28:11there should have been
28:12much earlier intervention
28:14down at Cronulla Beach
28:15better police presence
28:17it should never have happened
28:19the police requested
28:20photographs
28:21because they were going to
28:21charge the guys
28:22who attacked the guys
28:23up on the train
28:24and normally I would
28:25wait to be subpoenaed
28:26but I guess
28:28it's my way of saying
28:29no this is where
28:30I'm going to stand
28:31they needed to
28:33be held to account
28:34I knew one of the guys
28:36that had unfortunately
28:37gotten onto the train
28:38and he was arrested
28:39and I just
28:40I felt really sorry
28:41for them
28:42that they'd made
28:43that decision
28:44one of the guys
28:44in our club
28:45he got arrested
28:46he wasn't doing
28:47the bashing
28:47he jumped up and down
28:49on a police car
28:50and was throwing
28:50beer balls
28:51at the police
28:51his life changed
28:53and he ended up
28:53taking his lone life
28:54I as a young man
28:56can remember being
28:57angry about
28:59the most idiotic stuff
29:00and so I can
29:02I guess maybe that's
29:03even the part
29:04of the humiliation
29:04I felt was
29:06it's like
29:06I probably
29:08could have been led
29:09like this
29:10I think it's just
29:10simply inherited
29:11and a lot of people
29:12inherit it
29:13and they don't realise
29:14they've got it in them
29:15being told you're
29:16standing up for
29:17your country
29:18and your friends
29:18who are surf lifesavers
29:20and these are your enemies
29:21I think I probably
29:23could have been manipulated
29:24it's a terrible culture
29:25in this country
29:26the fear from others
29:27this whole mentality
29:28has always bothered me
29:29growing up in Australia
29:31and even the Sutherland Shire
29:32I moved away
29:34and tried to disassociate
29:35myself from the place
29:36you just didn't really
29:37want to be associated
29:38with that stigma
29:39there's two sides
29:40great community
29:41great natural beauty
29:43but then there's
29:44this flip side
29:45of ownership
29:45that's always bothered me
29:47nothing's changed
29:48we're still being demonised
29:50and in my opinion
29:51that's because people
29:52don't want to have
29:53frank conversations
29:54whether you experience
29:55racism or not
29:57it is there
29:58I've come across it
29:59you know
29:59racial profiling
30:00from police
30:01well Middle Eastern
30:02appearance
30:03as they call it
30:04but it's how people
30:05react to it I guess
30:06I have to react to it
30:07the way I want to react to it
30:08I can't let this
30:10bring me down
30:10if we don't acknowledge
30:12negative things
30:13that have happened
30:14we'll never be able
30:15to move forward
30:15it's the past
30:16you can't change it
30:17just own it
30:19I was there
30:20so that's why I'm here
30:44so that's why I'm here
30:46so that's why I'm here
30:47so that's why I'm here
30:47so that's why I'm here
30:48so that's why I'm here
