07:48I must compose myself for the Prime Minister
07:52I got ready to do a special report
07:55At 1 o'clock
07:56Forecasting a half Senate election
07:58Well only 5 minutes later
08:00His Excellency Sir John Kerr
08:01Came into the small drawing room
08:03And said well I've just sacked your Prime Minister
08:06I've put another one in his place
08:08And God help us all
08:10And you better put another 100 police on the front gate
08:18I was on a school tour
08:20At Glen Orkey Primary School from Tassie
08:21We'd gone to the War Memorial that morning
08:24And then after lunch we went over to have a look at Parliament House
08:26Being only 11 at the time
08:28I didn't know that much
08:29I knew there was a Labour Party and a Liberal Party
08:31And the Liberal Party was in opposition
08:32And the opposition always says
08:34How about a job the government's doing
08:36That sort of stuff
08:37I had these saucepans on lay-by
08:41For about 6 months
08:42I mean they were French Le Creuset
08:45Bright yellow
08:46So I drove to Marnica
08:49And paid them off
08:51And drove back to Old Parliament House
08:54It looked huge to me the building
08:56Very white
08:57I didn't expect that many people to be there
08:59But it just seemed chaotic to me
09:01The butler came to the door
09:03And said Your Excellency luncheon is served
09:05So we all sat down
09:06And a great weight had appeared to have been lifted from his shoulders
09:09I recall Malcolm Fraser
09:11Striding in a very determined way
09:14Pushing open the door into the opposition lobby
09:17And I remember that he was carrying a book in his hand
09:20I later realised that was the Bible
09:22On which he had taken his oath of office
09:25His Excellency said
09:26Captain Denny
09:27You know what would you
09:28Would you have served on if you weren't paid
09:30Do you realise that
09:31If the appropriation bills weren't passed
09:33Then machinery and government would stop
09:35You and the army wouldn't be paid
09:36Would you and your men serve on if they weren't paid
09:38We all said we would have served on
09:40And I think we would have served on till the food ran out
09:42It was quite interesting
09:44Because he would start justifying his actions
09:47Saying he didn't have any other option
09:49And then he would suddenly stop
09:52And he'd want to change the subject
09:53And sort of say enough of this
09:55So he vacillated
09:56When I went in to see
09:57Fred Chaney the whip
09:59Before Parliament sat that afternoon
10:01And he said
10:02Well we're going to be passing the bill
10:05Because Kerr has sacked Whitlam
10:08And installed Fraser
10:10As Prime Minister
10:12On condition
10:13That we carry the appropriation bills today
10:17And that we consent to a double dissolution
10:20You know it was flabbergasting
10:21I was secretary to Graham Fridenberg
10:24Who was Gough Whitlam's senior speechwriter
10:27The door burst open
10:29And Graham came in
10:30Very agitated
10:31And said
10:32Quick, quick
10:33Take a note
10:33Take a note
10:34We had those old electric typewriters
10:36And you had to wind the paper in
10:38And he was trying to push the paper in
10:39He was in such a hurry
10:40I was going
10:41Take it easy
10:42I was the senior executive
10:45Of what was called
10:47The Women's Affairs Branch
10:50It was just an ordinary day
10:52We were dealing with correspondence
10:54Or whatever
10:56And he dictated
10:57That this house has no confidence
10:59In the Prime Minister
11:00And I burst out laughing
11:02And I said
11:03Have you been fighting with Gough today?
11:07And he looked at me
11:08Aghast
11:08And he said
11:09Oh my God
11:10You don't know
11:10Do you
11:10And he said
11:12None of you know
11:13John Menadieu
11:14Was the head of the department
11:16So he called what was called then
11:19A branch heads meeting
11:21And he said
11:22Lady and gentlemen
11:24We now have a new Prime Minister
11:27Gough has been sacked
11:28By the Governor General
11:29And there's this stunned silence
11:31And everyone has said
11:32We actually couldn't believe
11:36That Gough Whitlam
11:39Didn't pull it off
11:40Everybody had gone off to have lunch
11:42I think I was probably about to go
11:43And get some lunch for myself
11:44And one phone
11:46On the Chief of Staff's desk
11:47Rang
11:48And I thought
11:49Oh
11:49I'd better pick it up
11:50Normally
11:51When I arrived at work
11:53I could get a parking spot
11:54Like
11:55Next to the front steps
11:56This time
11:57I drove past
11:59And there was not a single parking spot
12:01Picked up the phone
12:02Hello
12:03David Barnett here
12:05David Barnett
12:06Was Malcolm Fraser's press secretary
12:08He said
12:09Malcolm Fraser
12:11Has been made Prime Minister
12:12And he put the phone down
12:14And as I was getting out of the car
12:16A chap who worked in the parliamentary library
12:19Said to me
12:21Gough's been sacked
12:22And I said
12:23What?
12:24Nobody in Fraser's office
12:25Would pick up the phone
12:26Nobody in Whitlam's office
12:27Would pick up the phone
12:28So I then
12:29Rang my Sydney office
12:31And said
12:31I think we should get ready
12:33To go back on air
12:34Because this is what just happened
12:35I was
12:36Clearly conscious of the fact
12:39That it was
12:39A huge story
12:41But then on another level
12:42As an individual
12:44I was outraged by it
12:46I went and knocked on a few doors
12:47Just to see if I could find anybody
12:49Who could give me an indication
12:51Of what on earth was happening
12:52I saw
12:53A Liberal Party staffer
12:55I leaned up
12:56And grabbed him by the lapels
12:58And I said
12:59You won't get away with this
13:01You know
13:01And he just stared at me
13:03Like I was a mad woman
13:04A few years later
13:05We got married
13:06Then the bells began to ring
13:16At ten past two
13:18Our local representative
13:19Was supposed to be there
13:20To talk to us
13:20We sent him for about
13:21Thirty seconds
13:22Then the bells started ringing
13:23And he had to race off to vote
13:24Senators in the Labour Party
13:27We hadn't been told
13:29We were sacked
13:30The guys on their side
13:31Clearly didn't know
13:32We moved a motion
13:35For the supply ball
13:36To be passed
13:37It would have only taken
13:39A couple of minutes
13:39Well those have been
13:40Say aye
13:41At the contrary
13:42No
13:42Aye's have it
13:43Aye's have it
13:44We didn't challenge it
13:45I couldn't believe it
13:47Then Jim Rogers
13:48The clerk of the Senate
13:50Said to me
13:51There's a rumour
13:53That you blokes
13:55Have been dismissed
13:56And Don Wethersey
13:57Put his foot up on the desk
14:00Pulled his sock up
14:01And he said
14:02Pull the other sock up
14:04And that was it
14:07People were really
14:08They looked serious
14:09Some of them looked panicky
14:10So it was just this
14:11Bunch of school kids
14:12In the middle of chaos
14:14I went into the House of Reps
14:16Press Gallery
14:17You could just feel
14:19The turmoil
14:20In the chamber
14:21Except Malcolm Fraser
14:23Who was as cool as ice
14:25Gordon Scholes
14:26Who was then the Labour speaker
14:28And a very good speaker
14:29Called Malcolm Fraser to speak
14:33And he didn't call him
14:35The leader of the opposition
14:38He called him as the honourable member
14:41For Wannan
14:42And Fraser got up
14:43And then announced
14:45That he was
14:46The Prime Minister
14:47The honourable member for Wannan
14:49Mr Speaker
14:50This afternoon
14:52The Governor General
14:53Commissioned me
14:53To form a government
14:54Until elections can be held
14:57Order
15:00There was understandably
15:02A lot of noise
15:03From Labour members
15:05Most of them
15:05Didn't know what had happened
15:07They were shocked
15:08They were angry
15:09They were rowdy
15:10Trying
15:11To come to terms
15:13In such a short space of time
15:16With what had actually happened
15:18It was a political play
15:20And I thought it was the Liberal Party
15:23Butchering its way
15:25Through Australian democracy
15:29Mr Whitlam has been dismissed
15:35By the Governor General
15:36And Mr Malcolm Fraser
15:38Will become caretaker
15:39Prime Minister of Australia
15:40Pending a general election
15:42Following the news
15:43Which hit the national capital
15:44Like a bombshell
15:45The Senate has passed the budget
15:47I was at school
15:48And there was a buzz around the school
15:50The teachers said
15:51Have you heard what's happened?
15:52Whitlam's been sacked
15:53We didn't know at the time
15:54Just how monumental that was
15:56You know we thought
15:57Oh well
15:57You know you hear people
15:58Getting sacked all the time
15:59The word just spread
16:01Almost instantly
16:02You know sketchy reports
16:04On the radio
16:05About what had happened
16:06People who were working
16:07In buildings
16:09Surrounding Parliament House
16:11Descended on the building
16:12There was a few of my mates
16:13Who were interested in politics
16:14So we sort of
16:15Couldn't wait to sort of
16:16Get out of school
16:17And go home
16:18And go what's going on
16:19What is going on?
16:20We have had the extraordinary
16:21Situation of the Labour Party
16:23Still sitting on the government
16:25Side of the house
16:25Because they maintain
16:27They've got the numbers
16:28I was coming and going
16:29From our little desk
16:31I'd duck up into the King's Hall
16:33Where there was a lot of people
16:34Mingling around
16:34There was so much going on
16:36At such speed
16:37It was a slightly disconcerting time
16:39Of not actually knowing
16:40100% what was happening
16:42We was booked in
16:43To have a look at the House of Representatives
16:44So we actually got to go past
16:46All the people lined up
16:48Trying to get into
16:48The viewing gallery
16:49And Parliament House
16:50To watch what was going on
16:51Fred Daly as leader of the House
16:54Got up and moved a motion
16:55Condemning what the Governor-General had done
16:58Confirmed their confidence
16:59In Whitlam as Prime Minister
17:01And called upon the Governor-General
17:04To commission Whitlam again
17:07I remember seeing Gough Whitlam
17:09To me he seemed really in the face
17:11But that may have been normal for him
17:13I don't know
17:14It was only black and white tellies
17:15Mainly back then
17:16So I had nothing to compare it with
17:17Whitlam had moved
17:19No confidence in Malcolm Fraser
17:22The House of Reps
17:23Passed the motion
17:25Whitlam had asked the Labor Speaker
17:27Gordon Scholes
17:28To make an appointment
17:29To go back to Government House
17:30To see Sir John Kerr
17:32And tell him
17:33Labor had the majority
17:35And should therefore
17:36Be allowed to continue to govern
17:38I heard subsequently
17:40That Kerr refused to see Scholes
17:42Shortly after
17:44We had the news
17:45That Fraser wanted our office
17:47And we were to leave
17:49Within hours
17:50And so there were these pictures
17:52Of staff loading files
17:54Into a truck
17:54And it looked suspicious
17:56In the end of course
17:58They told us
17:59Oh he's been talked out of it
18:00You don't have to move
18:02Until after the election
18:04If you lose
18:05I was trying to find somebody
18:07Who I could talk to
18:08Or convinced to come down
18:09And be interviewed
18:09And that's when I got hold
18:10Of Paul Keating
18:11Sir John Kerr's done
18:12A completely unprincipled act
18:14You're saying that
18:15Sir John Kerr's
18:15Completely unjustified
18:17He's completely unjustified
18:18I wouldn't resolve it
18:19For a second
18:19Completely and totally unjustified
18:21Keating was ropeable
18:23He said to me
18:23Off air
18:24Unfortunately
18:25He didn't say it on air
18:26He should be locked up
18:27And put in jail
18:28Fraser appeared on the steps
18:34He was leaving Parliament House
18:37To go to Government House
18:38There were already
18:41Demonstrators there
18:42So they were able to
18:44Vent their rage
18:45Against him
18:47David Smith was the official secretary
18:53To His Excellency
18:54And he was on his way
18:56To read the actual proclamation
18:58On the steps of Parliament House
18:59So he had the piece of paper
19:02And he stopped
19:02And chatted with us
19:04And there was this jocular comment
19:06That we could go and provide security for him
19:08Because I think we understood
19:09It was going to be an exciting time
19:10Members of the public
19:11Gathered on the steps
19:12Of the old Parliament House
19:13And they'd be chanting
19:15We want golf
19:16We want golf
19:17It kept growing all the time
19:18Every time I'd go out there
19:19There'd be another
19:20Gosh it's grown again
19:21He then said
19:22Would you like a copy
19:23Oh yeah we would
19:24So he turned around
19:25And walked with the photocopier
19:26Gave us each a copy
19:27And this is the original document
19:28It hadn't been read
19:29And then he jumped in the car
19:31And went to Parliament House
19:33We heard that David Smith
19:36Was on the front steps
19:38Reading the proclamation
19:39Everybody who was in the building
19:42Charged to the front steps
19:44Grab the tape recorder
19:45And hang close to David Smith
19:48To try and record him
19:49And we were actually piled on the bus
19:51One of the teachers or something
19:53Said
19:53Oh they're just about to make a speech
19:55On the steps
19:55If you just want to hop off
19:57Go and have a look
19:58Senate opposition party room
20:01Opened onto the balcony
20:02And Witherset managed to acquire
20:04Some very fine champagne
20:06I might say
20:07I didn't have any celebratory drinks
20:09I didn't think that was appropriate
20:11And David Smith started speaking
20:13He wasn't met with a cheery reception
20:15And I was standing next to a man
20:19We had his little daughter
20:21On his shoulders
20:22He was pointing at Fraser
20:24And he was saying
20:25Don't you ever let anyone tell you
20:27That's your Prime Minister
20:28Bough Whitlam is your Prime Minister
20:30And he was crying
20:31And I started crying
20:32Some people spotted us
20:34And came and shouted abuse at us
20:36Raised our glasses to them
20:38Proclamation by His Excellency
20:40The Governor-General of Australia
20:41The minute David Smith
20:48Read the proclamation
20:50There was a huge bow
20:51Just out of the corner of my left eye
20:53I could see Whitlam
20:55Almost biblically
20:56The crowd parted
20:57And he came down the steps
20:59And he stood right behind
21:01David Smith's shoulder
21:02I couldn't really hear him
21:07Because there was a lot of noise
21:10And then David Smith ended with
21:15God save the Queen
21:16Which of course Gough had dropped
21:19And instituted Australian honours
21:22So God save the Queen
21:23Was kind of passé
21:24But it was back
21:26Whitlam stepped forward
21:28Everything sort of hushed a bit
21:31Because Gough was going to say something
21:32And as we all know
21:34His famous words
21:35Well may God save the Queen
21:37God may save the Queen
21:39Well may we say
21:40God save the Queen
21:42Well of course
21:42Nothing will save
21:44The Governor-General
21:45Ray said the mob
21:47And we're up there
21:48On the balcony
21:49Raising our glasses
21:50And this was vintage Whitlam
21:52This is the sort of thing
21:54That the crowd expected
21:56Gough completely spoke
21:58Off the cuff
21:59It would have been impossible
22:00To write in advance
22:01And we hadn't had
22:02Anything to do with it
22:03He had a flair
22:05For the dramatic
22:06And he did that
22:07With all the Jews
22:08The proclamation
22:10Which you have just heard read
22:12By the Governor-General's
22:13Official Secretary
22:14Was countersigned
22:16Malcolm Fraser
22:17Who will undoubtedly
22:22Go down in Australian history
22:24From Remembrance Day 1975
22:28As Kerr's Kerr
22:30His chosen words were deliberate
22:33And very pointed
22:34But very, very strong
22:36And I knew then
22:38That this was one of the moments
22:40In Australian political history
22:41That stuck in my mind
22:43To me it was very profound
22:45Word came through
22:52That there was something
22:53Going on at Government House
22:55Our plan was just
22:56To stir the pot
22:57We got a sheet
22:58And some black paint
23:00And on the sheet
23:01We just wrote
23:02Sucko Goff
23:03And off we went
23:04To Government House
23:05Well when we got there
23:06There was this crowd
23:08Developing
23:08There was a mob
23:09And they were chanting
23:11And there was
23:11Almost tears
23:13And hysterics
23:14The sergeant of police
23:16Called in all these
23:17Reinforcements
23:18Securing the perimeter
23:19Somebody's decided
23:20That they wanted to
23:21Get into the Government House
23:22So they all got there
23:23And they all tried
23:24To lift the boom gates
23:24The police were
23:25Holding the boom gates down
23:26All they had to do
23:27Was walk around
23:27Or walk underneath it
23:28But anyway
23:29That wouldn't have looked
23:29As spectacular
23:30We retired to the
23:32Small drawing room again
23:33And we sat there
23:34Where we had coffee
23:35And pour
23:36We could hear
23:37The noise
23:38Of the crowd
23:39At the main gate
23:39So there was
23:40A sort of
23:41Bit of excitement
23:42We're walking down
23:43The concrete path
23:45And at this end
23:46Is my partner
23:47We held our sign up
23:49And I reckon
23:50It took about
23:51A minute or so
23:52Before the crowd
23:53Really realised
23:54Hey
23:55These two young punks
23:57They're not on our side
23:58There was such anger
23:59And that I saw that
24:01On my partner's face
24:02And he was not like that
24:04I'd never seen
24:05Such anger
24:06On his face
24:06They turned on us
24:08Screaming in our faces
24:10And calling us Nazis
24:11And all sorts of stuff
24:12We're only kids
24:13Sergeant Southwell
24:15Came into the small
24:16Drawing room
24:16Pulled out from under
24:17His arm
24:19This banner
24:19They were really
24:20Really angry
24:21You could just
24:22See the venom
24:23In their eyes
24:24This is the banner
24:25That was confiscated
24:26By the Federal Police
24:27Stay in Whitlam
24:29Out the Kerr
24:32General Strike
24:33At the steps
24:45The crowd
24:46Was still buzzing
24:47There was a lot
24:48Of action happening
24:49Are you critical
24:49Of the Governor-General's
24:50Action
24:50I think that the
24:52Governor-General's
24:52Decision is wrong
24:53But I'm not going to
24:54Engage in personal
24:55Criticism of him
24:55But his decision
24:56Is an incorrect one
24:57Thank you very much
24:58That's right
24:58People were loud
25:01And they were very
25:02Worked up
25:02Have we got any
25:03Fraser supporters
25:04Here at all
25:04Really the world
25:09Had been turned
25:09Upside down
25:10It really was a
25:11Silly day
25:12Mad day
25:12We got to work
25:14Writing the story
25:15We finished
25:16Filing quite late
25:18Everybody was
25:19Heading to
25:19Charlie's restaurant
25:21Which was
25:22A late night
25:23Hangout for
25:24Journos
25:25And Parliament
25:26House staff
25:27There was a lot
25:28Of angst
25:29Lunik was there
25:31I think that
25:32Might have been me
25:32Because I remember
25:33Sitting there like
25:34This all night
25:35I had my first
25:37Cigarette
25:37And I ended up
25:38With a huge burn
25:39On my finger
25:41So that was
25:42A little reminder
25:42Of the events
25:44Too
25:44Next morning
25:50Up and about
25:51For the swearing in
25:52Of the new
25:53Prime Minister
25:53Malcolm Fraser
25:54And the Liberal
25:55Ministry
25:55And then there was
25:56Another afternoon tea
25:58Everybody was
25:59Traumatised
26:00And it seemed
26:01Incredibly unfair
26:03That it was my
26:04Birthday
26:05We was actually
26:06In the paper
26:06Down at
26:07Gwynnalky School
26:08In a Canberra
26:09Newspaper
26:09So I bought a copy
26:10There was obviously
26:11Somebody at the
26:12Canberra Times
26:12That was there
26:13So the only obvious
26:14Non-Labor supporters
26:15The 16 year old
26:16Jeff Didier
26:17And his 15 year old
26:18Friend
26:18Who bravely displayed
26:19A banner
26:20Sucko Goff
26:21So that was my
26:22Claim to fame
26:23For the next day
26:23The public service
26:25Sort of came to a standstill
26:27Awaiting the election
26:30Goff just kind of led us
26:32Into getting ready
26:33For a campaign
26:34There were protests
26:37All over the country
26:38But as I've come to learn
26:40The people you get out
26:42In the streets
26:43Aren't necessarily
26:44The people who are going
26:46To decide the election
26:47On election night
26:55We're all sitting
26:55On the edges
26:56Of our seats
26:57But very quickly
26:58It became apparent
26:59That the coalition
27:00Had won
27:01We lost a lot of seats
27:03Lost a lot of seats
27:05Oh it broke my heart
27:06They'd been through so much
27:08They'd achieved so much
27:09Fraser was elected
27:11In his own right
27:13He was our boss
27:14And then we had to work out
27:16How we were going to deal with it
27:18There was a certain amount
27:20Of hostility
27:20Between the Labour Party
27:22And the Liberal Party
27:24We never trusted the Liberals
27:27The Labour Party felt
27:29That we was robbed
27:30We won two elections
27:32You wouldn't accept it
27:34You'd been in power
27:34For 23 years
27:36On the other hand
27:37People on our side
27:39Say well hang on
27:40We had an election
27:41We won it overwhelmingly
27:42We all know
27:43That governments
27:44Will make tough decisions
27:46Usually after they're elected
27:47Because they know
27:48They'll become unpopular
27:49It's a strategy
27:50So you just can't say
27:52By throwing it back
27:53To the people
27:53That it was fair
27:54And that's caused me
27:55To reflect on it
27:56I went from being a supporter
27:57In a sense
27:58In the early days
27:59Of Sir John
28:00You know now
28:01To looking at
28:01With a much more critical eye
28:03And coming down
28:03On the other side
28:04Of the fence
28:05I know I waxed lyrical
28:06About Gough Whitlam
28:07But he was a gift
28:09To Australia
28:10And we trust him
28:12And he was very gracious
28:14About it
28:15Whitlam became a martyr
28:16Fraser
28:17Was initially treated
28:20Pretty harshly
28:22By history
28:23But he did actually
28:25Do some very good things
28:27He doubled
28:28He doubled
28:28The allocation
28:29For women's refuges
28:31On my word
28:32And that has stuck with me
28:36Helping with the dismantling
28:38Of apartheid
28:40And on indigenous affairs
28:42When he and Whitlam
28:44Had aged
28:45And became friends
28:47I could understand why
28:49I think, you know
28:50The villain
28:51Clearly
28:52Was Kurt
28:53It ruined Sir John's life
28:54We've all seen
28:55The cartoons
28:56Of him
28:57The silly top hat
28:58And getting drunk
28:59At the Melbourne Cup
29:00And he was a laughing stock
29:01Governor General
29:03What kind of job
29:04Is that
29:05La la la la la la la la
29:07Roaming around
29:10Like a fool
29:11In a big top hat
29:12La la la la la la la la la
29:15He turned out
29:16To be a terribly sad figure
29:18In history
29:19And I think he deserved
29:20What he got
29:21Well I thought
29:22The way John Kerr
29:23Was made
29:24The villain of the piece
29:25Was quite wrong
29:26The powers he exercised
29:28Were the powers
29:30Given to him
29:31Under the Australian Constitution
29:34I never really changed
29:35My views as far as
29:36Being more on the
29:37Conservative side of politics
29:38I still am
29:38It's interesting
29:40When I sort of
29:40Look back now
29:41How can one person
29:42Just sack a whole government
29:43The public need to do that
29:45Always
29:46We need to vote
29:47It was a political solution
29:48That the Governor General
29:50Had no part making
29:52Which should never have happened
29:53It was a day
29:54In Australian history
29:56Like none other
29:57But it was a critical day
29:59Because it took
30:00The Constitution
30:02Right to the brink
30:03The main lesson
30:05I think
30:06Is that
30:07Parliamentary democracy
30:08Has survived
30:10The people determine
30:12What shall happen
30:26With her
30:27Their fear
30:27That the verification
30:28During a recipe
30:28After
30:28The first time
30:31You have decided
30:31To live
30:32In fact
30:32The government
30:33To live
30:33Or
30:34Theea
30:35To live
30:40The
30:45To live
30:47It was a
30:48carbon
30:49The
