00:00This is Patricia. Hi Patricia. Hi. I found a few more outside. They're coming in.
00:19This way? To Graham. What do you reckon? This glass of wine is $23. Is that a good
00:25bottle? Yeah, that's $23 just for that. I'm gonna keep the glass. This morning was a
00:33very good year. The Kensington Hotel was previously on the site from 1863. It
00:44changed its name soon after to the Prince Consort Hotel. This hotel was
00:49eventually pulled down and the current Prince Consort Hotel was built between
00:531887 and 1888. The architect was Richard Gailey and it cost 9,400 pounds to
01:01build. In its time, this hotel had one of the largest bars in Brisbane. It also had
01:0628 bedrooms. There is a World War II air raid shelter at the back, now being used
01:12as a storeroom. I'm gonna go and see if we can go upstairs. Right. Everyone stay here.
01:17Well mingle around. Hang on. I'll be back. Hello everyone. Hello. So there's everyone
01:22going up the stairs there. We're gonna go up there because that's where the old hotel
01:26rooms were. And you've got to be careful down here on the bottom of the stairs
01:29because there's that step there. But it's heritagelistic but everyone trips over it.
01:34All right.
01:36Come on through. Come on through.
01:47Wow. Thank you for this. Thank you so much. There's an old doorway there. So this was an
01:53entrance to someone's room and that was their window just there going out onto the balcony.
01:58There would have been another one here. There's two more over here.
02:05Can I have a quick look at that bar? Is that all right?
02:10This really is a beautiful place up here. Oh that's lovely. Oh thank you so much for the
02:16lights. It's beautiful isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you reckon? Wow. It's nicer than the
02:22ones we went to on the first pub call. And she has an albino peacock and she took a picture of.
02:29I've just got a phone. Oh okay. This sounds interesting. Yeah it is. Aren't they gorgeous?
02:35And there's another one up there on the... So they've got peacocks up there and I was just
02:38talking about. All right let's go back down.
02:41It might be a twin brother. No.
02:43Yeah, yeah. All set. The next one is the Wickham. Yeah, the Wickham. I love the Wickham.
02:55The Wickham. It's got an amazing history.
02:57And we have Robbie McCullough.
03:02What did I do? You're called Robbie. Robbie? I didn't say... I did not say Robbie. I said...
03:09Well my middle name is William. I can be Robbie Williams. Walk about with Robbie Williams.
03:16I'll get sued. Thank you so much. Thank you.
03:23We've got to go this way.
03:27This is really cool. Great.
03:32This is everyone. We're outside Macbuerda's now.
03:39Everyone's behaving themselves so far.
03:44What do you reckon? You're getting some good shots?
03:46Yeah. Good? Good crowd shots here.
03:56Do a fan. Oh you watch the show?
03:57Yeah I do. Do a great job. Oh good on you. Thank you.
03:59Where do you get all your information from?
04:02A lot of different sources. I go through State Library,
04:05Federal Archives, Historians, History Groups.
04:09Now we're actually doing a pub crawl at the moment.
04:11Looking at the old pubs right now.
04:13That's a great story. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:15Well done. Oh that's great.
04:17What's your name, sorry? I'm Leroy.
04:19Leroy. Nice to meet you. Yeah, lovely.
04:20Say hi to the camera. G'day.
04:22All right. I'm going to go in and talk to the people.
04:24But come in, grab a seat and I'll go talk to the staff.
04:28Everyone all right? All good?
04:30Going to grab a drink? Yep.
04:32What do you reckon? Pretty cool.
04:34Have you been here before?
04:35Uh, yeah, at one point in the last 20 years.
04:39I think that is. Okay. All right.
04:42Everyone ask me how much this was.
04:46This was $14.
04:51Let's go for another one.
04:53Stand about, actually just here is good.
04:55If you can stand right here.
04:57This building here was originally the Oriental workshop
05:01and it was open in 1885.
05:03So it was still during the time of the economic boom
05:07here in South East Queensland.
05:08Again, this was built by the same guy, Richard Gayley,
05:11and it's a three-story building.
05:13It's another massive development.
05:15This building here had 18 bedrooms
05:18and in 1996 it became gay friendly.
05:23We know that the Wiccan was synonymous with the gay listening community here in Brisbane.
05:29Thank you, Melissa.
05:30Thanks, Melissa.
05:31Awesome work, Melissa. Thank you.
05:33All right, we've just got a quick question for you.
05:41The peacock feathers there.
05:43Do you know what the significance is of peacocks in pubs in Fortitude Valley?
05:47So, the reason why we have a particular peacock display
05:53is because we actually had a taxidermy peacock in our hallway garden for a number of years.
06:00Oh, because they got the same thing at Prince Kong, so okay.
06:02Oh, really?
06:03Yeah.
06:03We actually had a taxidermy out in the hallway for about 15 plus years, 15, 20 years.
06:11People still to this day talk about it.
06:13A peacock.
06:14Something happened to our peacock, unfortunately.
06:17Right.
06:17And that's why we renamed this peacock farm because of our long-standing taxidermy.
06:24Yeah.
06:25Someone pointed out that, yeah, there's a peacock over at the Prince Consort
06:29and then we saw this here and then you've mentioned there was a peacock there.
06:32There's got to be a connection between that.
06:34That would be interesting to follow up on that.
06:38Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:40Thank you so much for that.
06:41There's a history of a basement courtesy of Betty.
06:45Right.
06:46So, underneath table 201 there's actually a trap door.
06:51Here we go.
06:52This is the trap door under the wicker.
06:53Here we go.
06:54Here we go.
06:54Here we go.
06:55Here we go.
06:55Here we go.
06:56Here we go.
06:57Here we go.
06:58Here we go.
06:59Oh no, thank you.
07:00No, they'll come in.
07:01Whoa.
07:03Wow.
07:05Wow.
07:07So, they're actually part of the original framework that came with this building.
07:14Right, right, okay.
07:15But they're still intact.
07:16Wow.
07:17It's too loud.
07:18Yeah.
07:18Wow.
07:19So, do you use it for anything now?
07:21A lot of our plumbing system is down here.
07:23A lot of the plumbing, yeah.
07:24But apart from that, it's not too much.
07:26Part of that, it's just sand and gravel and building tunnels.
07:30You can smell it, though.
07:31Yeah.
07:33How many times have you been down there?
07:34Really?
07:35So many times.
07:36So many times, okay.
07:37You can see the original brickwork where it's arched.
07:40Yeah, right, yeah, yeah.
07:41But then you can see new brick that's filled that in.
07:43Right, right.
07:44Do you want to step around out to the kitchen?
07:47No.
07:49There was this one time where we were closed for renovations, and we only had the gaming room open.
07:55So this area was closed, and the back garden was closed, and it was just me on shift.
08:02We had a few people call in sick, so I was like, I'll do the shift myself.
08:05Like, it'll be fine.
08:06And I have walked out of the gaming room here, and just about to walk into the scullery pit,
08:14so the dish pit.
08:16And before I could get around, all I could see was like this solid black silhouette,
08:21and then it just vanished.
08:23And I was like, what's going on?
08:24Yeah, right, okay.
08:25Okay.
08:26Right, yep.
08:27I've come back to the Wickham Hotel to take a look down there into the cellar.
08:31Yeah, you're right about that.
08:37It is so humid down here.
08:39It is.
08:40Wow.
08:41It really is.
08:42Oh, yeah, I see.
08:43Okay, all right.
08:45Brilliant.
08:47So this brickwork here is going to date from the 1880s.
08:53Yeah, the original.
08:54Yeah.
08:54So this is said to be one of the tunnels that led to the Vortitude Valley Police Station.
09:06I'm talking you through.
09:09Do we know what that is?
09:10Um, I wonder if there's any like documentation on it.
09:16I think the bar is over there, isn't it?
09:19Yes, so the bar's here, and then, um, because this brickwork is quite new,
09:26this is where a lot of the theories started of the tunnels being filled in.
09:31Sorry, Paul.
09:32Yeah, that's a shame.
09:35Yeah, because the police station would be that way then, wouldn't it?
09:38It would be down.
09:39Yeah, down.
09:40It would be down that way, wouldn't it?
09:41Down Wickham Street.
09:42Down Wickham Street, okay.
09:43So this direction points directly under the valley pools.
09:49Down Wickham Street.
09:52Now, where was the place where you, oh, this is the stool here.
09:55This is the stool.
09:56You were telling me about it.
09:57Yes.
09:58Now, I don't have the facts 100, like 100% accurate,
10:02because everything that I hear about the history is all from people who've lived it, experienced it.
10:08Yeah, yeah, okay.
10:09But the story circulating the stool is someone who came down to no longer be on this earth.
10:19Yes.
10:20But I'd love to know if that's true or not, because getting the history of that person,
10:24and what their relevance was within this building would be incredible.
10:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:29Yeah.
10:29Yeah.
10:30Come into this section of here.
10:33You could charge 20 bucks a person, they'd come down here.
10:35Do you think people would be interested?
10:37Oh, absolutely.
10:39So I just want to say thank you very much, Betty, for letting me come down here and take a look.
10:42Absolutely.
10:42And for being such a gracious host on the day.
10:45No worries.
10:46Wow.
10:46Happy to be of assistance.
10:47Yeah.
10:48Thank you so much.
10:50All right, we'd better get back to work, so we'll ascend.
10:53I was going to bring a hurricane lantern, and that would have looked good.
11:00Yeah, it would have, yeah.

11:33So leaving the Wickham, now we're heading to the Osborne.
11:38Go on.
11:45Let's catch up to them.
11:47They've abandoned us.
11:53A better tour guide.
12:08All right, Osborne Hotel.
12:19This is the place.
12:21This here, this was originally a doorway.
12:25This was the door.
12:28This is how you got in and out of the Osborne Hotel, right here.
12:38This is the second oldest pub in Fortitude Valley.
12:45The oldest is the King George.
12:48Hello.
12:49Here we are.
12:49This is the place.
12:52Wow.
12:52Yeah, this is the place.
12:53This is where we are.
12:55Robert.
12:56Oh, they spelt my name wrong.
12:57I have a son's wife then.
12:59Ann Street was the old road from Brisbane to Eagle Farm.
13:07Built in 1863 and opened in 1864, the Osborne Hotel was begun by Ann and Charles Osborne.
13:15In the 1920s, the outside of the building was radically altered to make it more like the Art
13:20Deco style of architecture than in fashion.
13:24They wanted it functional, not decorative.
13:27In 2003, it became the Fringe Bar, but reverted to being the Osborne Hotel in 2017.
13:35So, you say the books here are glued together.
13:37That's what you told me.
13:39And I was going to go with her about it.
13:41I seriously touched this book and we'll put this one out.
13:44Oh, that one came out.
13:45Yeah, yeah.
13:46And it came out, and then it's a clue.
13:47You're going to come and get it out.
13:49You see that?
13:49Yes.
13:50All of these books here are glued together.
13:53Okay.
13:53You are.
13:54I can see you know that.
13:55It's amazing.
13:55It's okay.
13:56We're just curious.
13:57Okay.
13:57I just need you to hop out of the booth, please.
13:59Oh dear.
14:00They are watching you on security cameras.
14:02No!
14:03Don't go there.
14:03No, don't go there.
14:04Don't go there.
14:05I don't want to touch.
14:06I was just going to have a look.
14:07No.
14:07No one even...
14:08You're a bad man.
14:12Unfortunately, this bloke here, I haven't really...
14:18Thank you so much for coming online.
14:20Yeah.
14:21Yeah, I really appreciate it.
14:23All right.
