00:00well you can expect to see the full moon except that it's going to be much more glorious you're
00:07expecting to see it about 12 to 15 percent larger and about 30 percent brighter so we know that the
00:14full moon is one of the largest objects in the sky but today and three consecutive times which
00:20is on the 5th of november and the 5th of december we're going to see the moon in its glorious
00:25supermoon phase so what makes it brighter and seen larger look the supermoon phase is particularly
00:34because um the moon is orbiting around the earth and this orbit happens to not be a perfect circle
00:41it's in fact an ellipse so there'll be points in time when the moon is closer to the earth and then
00:46there'll be points in time when it's further away simply because the orbit is an ellipse so what
00:52happens in a supermoon phase is that the moon's position is the closest to the earth and we call
00:57this the perigee now when it's furthest away it's at apogee the distance between the furthest point
01:04and the nearest point is around 50 000 kilometers um so i would say that in an average day when the
01:11moon is just about its orbit doing its thing it's about 380 000 kilometers away from us but when it's
01:18in its supermoon phase it's about 350 000 kilometers uh away from us so that closest distance is what
01:25we're looking and it's going to give us a very large apparent effect and where's the best place
01:31to see it in australia look i think um soon after uh sunset and the moon is just rising so if you start
01:39looking towards the east and towards the horizon that's where you'll see the moon rise and the best
01:44place and the best time is immediately when the moon is rising and the reason i say this is because
01:50you'll have the beautiful terrestrial objects as a backdrop which is going to even further magnify
01:55the effect of the moon so when you see the moon against the terrestrial objects backdrop it's going
02:01to look much more um bigger and larger so anywhere you can see the moon would be just fine and you don't
02:07really need a telescope or anything you just need your eyes and hopefully clear skies which uh at sydney is a
02:13little bit of a question tonight yeah it's looking a bit cloudy at the moment isn't it uh so this is
02:18a harvest moon there are two more super moons to come what are they called and what's the difference
02:22between them look i think 2025 is very special because normally we don't have three consecutive
02:30supermoon super full moons lined up and this is because on the time it takes for the moon to do one
02:36entire orbit around the earth which is about 27.3 days and the the time it takes for one between one
02:44full moon and another full moon is about 29 ish days and obviously these don't line up so for you to get
02:50three consecutive super full moons one after the other everything needs to line up a little bit and
02:57that's what's happened uh in 2025 which is this year um so this is what makes it really special um and and
03:04the reason we have consecutive super moons is because as i said the moon is in an orbit so it has
03:10to slowly come closer to the earth and then recede back uh and this is not like an instant effect which
03:16is why you see it uh three times in a row um and it's just fabulous that it's all coinciding with the
03:22full moon phase which we'll all get to see and devica do super moons have an effect on waves and tides
03:29look it does they they give rise to what is called as a perigian spring tide um but the effect that
03:37you'll actually be able to measure is probably a couple of centimeters in in difference in tides
03:42so i have been asked questions are we going to expect a tsunami or a massive increase in tides
03:48no we're not those are geological effects you'll probably see a small increase which you'll barely
03:53even notice uh but i think what you'll enjoy is the beautiful uh moonlit sky if you're out going
04:00for a walk on the beach and hopefully we get clear skies tonight and if not we still have uh two more
04:06consecutive chances of watching a full super moon on the 5th of november and the 5th of december okay
04:13and looking ahead the excitement continues because in march next year there's a total lunar eclipse
04:19that's absolutely there is and i'm trying to find my way to the best space to uh look at it
