'Violence unpunished': Kyiv Biennale examines the healing power of art after war and conflict

The 6th Kyiv Biennale at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw examines the effect of war and conflict and asks how society often allows violence to go unpunished. The idea behind the exhibition was inspired by the revolutionary events in Ukraine's Maidan Square a decade ago.

00:00The 6th Kyiv Biennial has opened at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
00:04The event, which first took place in 2015, aims to showcase the power of resilience through art.
00:30This year's show, titled Near East, Far West, features works by artists from European and Middle Eastern cities.
00:47All of the works share a common thread, that of perseverance through hardship and rising to a better future.
01:00Among these works are those of Turkish-German artist Aikhan Sofolu, who has a lot of war in the region.
01:30The image that we see on the mosaic is stemming from Istanbul, from a terminus train station, Sirkeci Estasyonu, Sirkeci Station,
01:43which used to be the final destination of Orient Express, and also where people, a lot of labor migrants, departed from Turkey for their future lives in Germany.
01:53The image is the one-to-one reproduction of the rose window of the waiting hall of Sirkeci Station.
02:00So this is the final thing, actually, that people had seen on their way to Germany.
02:07The exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art will be open until January 18th.
