00:00France finds itself in a renewed period of political crisis

00:05after French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu

00:08handed in his resignation this Monday morning

00:12making him the shortest serving prime minister since 1958

00:18less than one month.

00:20He was appointed beginning of September

00:22to try to steer next year's budget plan

00:26through a deeply fragmented parliament

00:29and tackle a ballooning deficit

00:32that stands at 5.8% of GDP in 2024

00:38well above the EU limit of 3%.

00:42His cabinet that was announced on Sunday night

00:46faced a fierce criticism for its lack of renewal.

00:5012 out of the 18 ministers had already served in the previous government.

00:56So what's next?

00:58Well, looking ahead for French President Emmanuel Macron

01:01it looks like the President faces difficult choices.

01:05He can either appoint a new prime minister

01:08ideally from outside his camp this time

01:12or he could call for a new snap parliamentary elections.

01:16but this option doesn't guarantee a less fractured parliament

01:22and new elections could also give some advantage

01:25and more seats in parliament to the far right or the left

01:28which is something that Macron does not want.

01:31And the last option is that Macron could also step down

01:35but this remains a highly unlikely decision.
