00:00This is Police Interceptors, and you're riding with the pride of Northamptonshire.
00:12Ace pursuit drivers, with air support, and a crack dog unit, they bring down the bad
00:29guys, keep the streets safe, and battle 24-7 in the war on crime.
00:45Crash, crash.
00:47On the floor now!
00:48This is what it is, isn't it?
00:49We find them, we lock them up.
00:53Coming up, the Interceptors battle road tax rage.
00:57Get on the floor!
01:00Get back!
01:02Get back!
01:03This is going to fail to stop.
01:05Service station thieves are caught in the act.
01:08There's parcels falling out of the back of the vehicle.
01:11And...
01:12There it is.
01:13The mystery of the vanishing van driver.
01:16He's parked it very interestingly.
01:19There were over 40,000 assaults on police officers in England and Wales last year.
01:40Situations the Interceptors face can change in a heartbeat.
01:44Dan and co-pilot Catalin from the neighbourhood policing team are on their way to a routine
01:52check on a motor.
01:53I received a call a few days ago that there's an untaxed vehicle parked on the road.
02:00If the vehicle's here that's untaxed, that'll be seized.
02:05Because I believe the tax hasn't been paid on it for over a year now.
02:10That's the vehicle there.
02:13One untaxed Nissan Navara exactly where they expect it to be.
02:18To try to find the owner, Catalin does some digging on the number plate.
02:26There's no insurance on it.
02:28MOT will spy in 2024.
02:31And it has no tax since 2022.
02:35There's no insurance on it either?
02:36No.
02:37I mean, to be fair mate, it might have just been dumped here or something.
02:41Yeah.
02:42A solid theory.
02:44Until a woman says she's spoken to the owner of the pickup truck.
02:47Can he come here without...
02:49Because I don't want to take his car away.
02:51Because he has no...
02:52No...
02:53No tax on it.
02:54He has traders.
02:55Yeah, you can't have traders mate on...
02:57You need to have a number on it for me to check that he's paying tax.
03:02Which I don't...
03:03I can't verify.
03:04He's paying tax.
03:05Yeah.
03:06Yeah.
03:07Yeah.
03:08It's a clear cut job.
03:09Without any proof of tax or traders insurance, the pickup truck can be seized.
03:14Hello.
03:15Can I arrange, please, a vehicle recovery, no tax?
03:19However, the news isn't going down well with the residents.
03:24Standing in here like you're the man.
03:26No.
03:27You're a stick mate.
03:28You're absolutely smoking with your uniform off.
03:30I promise you I would.
03:32Or the untaxed motor's owner, who's just rolling up.
03:35Okay.
03:36You're taking what?
03:37You're taking what?
03:38You're taking what?
03:39You won't take nothing mate.
03:40Okay.
03:41You won't take nothing mate.
03:42I'm a trader, yeah?
03:43Okay.
03:44I promise you you won't take nothing mate.
03:45Is that your car, is it?
03:46There's nothing you can do mate.
03:47It doesn't look like a calm chat is on the cards.
03:49And the interceptors are outnumbered.
03:50Can we have another wind unit here, please?
03:52What do you mean can you have another unit?
03:54Get away from my vehicles mate.
03:55I am a trader.
03:56There's nothing you can do.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Show me that.
03:59Mate, stay back.
04:00Stay back.
04:01Don't touch me brother mate.
04:02I promise you.
04:03Is this your vehicle?
04:04Listen, don't think you're a hero because you're not.
04:05Listen to me.
04:06Is this your vehicle?
04:07I am sick of you because you're tramped mate.
04:08That's all you are.
04:09Okay.
04:10You want to come around and just try and think you can just take anything you want.
04:12Okay.
04:13You won't mate.
04:14It's untaxed.
04:15It's been untaxed over a year.
04:16I've just bought it.
04:17I'm a trader.
04:18I get to drive with no tax for two weeks if I really want to.
04:20No, that's been, that's been.
04:22So mate, you don't know.
04:23I'm a trader.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Show me that this trader.
04:26I'll show you my trader's policy now.
04:27Get me this key for this thing now.
04:29Just calm down buddy.
04:30Calm down mate.
04:31Calm down.
04:32Move.
04:33Kill out my way.
04:34No, no.
04:35I'm not gonna move.
04:36There's nothing you can do.
04:37There's nothing you can do.
04:38I can do.
04:39You're not getting in there.
04:40Take this stupid thing off mate and I'll guarantee you couldn't do one thing.
04:41Okay.
04:42I promise you you couldn't.
04:43Cause I promise you you wouldn't.
04:44Did you say you've got a...
04:45Great owner's name calling.
04:46Yeah, sure.
04:47I'm gonna show you my policy.
04:48Don't you think you moron.
04:50Escalates.
04:51You think you're a hero because you've got this stupid thing on brother.
04:54Take this off.
04:55I'll break your head.
04:56That's about that.
04:57We don't think we're heroes.
04:58You couldn't.
04:59You couldn't mate.
05:00I promise you.
05:01We're just doing our job.
05:02Mine.
05:03Mine.
05:04See?
05:05Mine.
05:06Now move.
05:07It's a standoff.
05:08Mate, I'm telling you you're not getting into that.
05:09Telling you.
05:10Catalin tries again to reason with the owner.
05:11Show me that you're a trader.
05:12Okay.
05:13And you can prove to me that you can drive this without a tax.
05:17Yeah.
05:18And I'm not taking it.
05:19I'll show you right.
05:20Yeah.
05:21There you go.
05:22That's all we want to see.
05:23Yeah.
05:24Pass your phone.
05:25The owner phones his dad and asks him to bring proof of a trader's policy.
05:29Is he...
05:30Can he get the policy?
05:31Yeah.
05:32Okay.
05:33Well, if he can get the policy, we'll just wait.
05:35But the pause in hostility doesn't last long.
05:38Where are you from?
05:39My detail is this.
05:40This.
05:41It's not like grassism.
05:42I guarantee it.
05:43If you turn back at your own country in that uniform, they'd probably be edger.
05:45Okay.
05:46That's probably what they would do to you.
05:47A simple seizure of an untaxed motor is taking a sinister turn.
05:51If you want to.
05:52Please, can you just get this paperwork?
05:54This fat knob is pissing me off.
05:56Fortunately, the cavalry are arriving.
05:58Yeah.
05:59Kill yourself.
06:00Let me find out what's going on.
06:01You're saying chill, but it's...
06:02Don't do that.
06:03Don't.
06:04Come on.
06:05Along with a recovery truck ready to lift the untaxed Navara.
06:08Right, literally two minutes and then I'll let you know.
06:13However, they are closely followed by another truck driver.
06:20Who's seen red?
06:21No!
06:22What's the need for that?
06:23What?
06:24What's the need for that?
06:25What?
06:26What's the need for that?
06:27Blocking the road.
06:28I know, because we're dealing with an incident here.
06:29So am I.
06:30Idiot.
06:31The raging driver is pushing ahead.
06:44Forcing recovery further down the road.
06:48Right, you chill out because otherwise you'll get yourself locked up for public order.
06:53Move.
06:54You move and stop swearing.
06:56Go on, go.
06:58Oh my days.
07:01You need to go somewhere.
07:04Go.
07:05I can't go before I do anything.
07:07Sounds familiar, because he's the untaxed motor owner's father.
07:14And he's about to kick off.
07:16Stop!
07:17Stop!
07:18Stop!
07:19Stop!
07:20Stop!
07:21Stop!
07:22Stop!
07:23Stop!
07:24Stop!
07:25Stop!
07:26Stop!
07:27Stop!
07:28You're taking what?
07:29You're taking what?
07:30You're taking what?
07:31You're taking nothing, mate.
07:32In Northampton, Dan and Catalin's simple inquiry into an untaxed Nissan Navara is going
07:38from 0 to 100.
07:39I'm going to show you my policy.
07:41Don't you think you moron?
07:42I promise you.
07:43First, the owner turned up making threats.
07:45Take this off.
07:46I'll break your head.
07:47And now his dad has arrived.
07:48And he's even more volatile.
07:49Can you leave the car?
07:50Can you get out of the way, please?
07:51Yeah, no.
07:52Don't even get my car.
07:53No.
07:54Don't even.
07:55Let's get out of the way.
07:56Get out of the way.
07:57Get out of the way.
07:58Get out of the way.
07:59Get out of the way.
08:00Get out of the way.
08:01Get out of the way.
08:02Get out of the way.
08:03Get out of the way.
08:04Get out of the way.
08:05Get out of the way.
08:06Get out of the way.
08:07Get out of the way.
08:08Get out of the way.
08:09Get out of the way.
08:10Get out of the way.
08:11Get out of the way.
08:12You don't want to get yourself hurt.
08:14An officer tries to defuse the situation, but the families hit boiling point.
08:21The whole team rush to assist and Katalin is forced to pull the parva spray.
08:30Even with a full face of parva, Dad is still resisting.
08:42More people are gathering.
08:55And the aggressive son isn't backing down.
09:01The Sarge draws its taser.
09:07The prospect of 50,000 volts does the job.
09:18Whilst getting the dad in cuffs, the son flees in his golf.
09:25Yeah, we made off, we made off. Driven off. Driven off.
09:37Truck's gone.
09:39During the altercation, someone's also driven off in the untaxed Navara.
09:44You good?
09:45Yeah, I think I parved a little bit, but that's what I made.
09:48That's what I made.
09:49I took on and down.
09:51He was holding, his dad was going for me.
09:53Yeah.
09:54He was holding his dad back.
09:55And then he just went,
09:57So he hasn't actually, like, touched me.
09:59The simple seizure of an untaxed motor has escalated to cops on the lookout for one man, as well as both of his cars.
10:10And his parved father being nicked for public order.
10:14Yeah.
10:15There's times like this, that you realise how much you can rely on your colleagues to come and assist.
10:24The team wastes no time in getting back on the road to find the sun on the run.
10:29Sometimes, you know, you can meet someone who's really angry, but if you talk to them in the right way, some people respond better to that.
10:35You know, that works most of the time, but it's the people who can't de-escalate.
10:40And we may need to resort to using PPE, like Catelyn did today with the powder spray.
10:46Sometimes we have to, you know, use force, which is proportionate, to be able to get a situation under control,
10:51to make sure that we don't get injured and members of the public don't get injured either.
10:58Within the hour, there's some search success.
11:01They found the golf.
11:05Another unit finds the sun's white golf unattended and they seize it.
11:09If he wants to get his car back, he's going to need to present himself to get that.
11:13So, at some point, he's going to, his luck's going to run out, unfortunately.
11:18And he'll have to answer what he's, what he thought he's done.
11:23Interceptors also picked up the untaxed Navara that afternoon.
11:30The owner's look ran out when he was arrested the following day.
11:36He pleaded not guilty to assaulting and obstructing the police, but guilty to using threatening words and behaviour.
11:42He was ordered to pay £141 in fines.
11:46After some time in the cells, no further action was taken against the father for public order.
11:52Some of the country's main arterial routes, such as the M1 and the A14, run through Northamptonshire.
12:10And these roads are often hit hard by travelling crime gangs committing curtain side thefts from lorries.
12:19What you'll tend to get is a spotter vehicle, which will go into the service areas, cut the curtain fabric of the lorries.
12:27And then if it's worth taking, they will normally call forward a carrier vehicle.
12:32And the team will then go about emptying the contact from the back of the curtain side into their vehicle.
12:40It can be quite a difficult crime to detect because a lot of times the lorry drivers are asleep, so don't hear it.
12:48It's a big problem, but I think we do quite a good job at trying to prevent it and also pursue it as well.
13:01To crack down on the country's £66 million cargo crime problem, there's a national police operation.
13:08Up Barrack.
13:12Tonight, dog handler Lucy and canine crime fighter Bryn are on Barrack duty, looking to catch the thieves red-handed.
13:23We'll just be checking service stations, lorry lay-bys, lorry parks, anywhere really where suspects could park up
13:34and try and steal loads from the back of the HGVs.
13:39It's just a little bit of luck and a little bit of looking in the right place.
13:44The right place tonight is a service station off the A14.
13:53Lucy spots a van parked up next to a lorry.
13:55And the driver isn't sticking around.
14:04A vehicle check, please.
14:06Loaded with loot, tail lifts still down.
14:10I think we've just come across a barrack in progress.
14:14This is going to fail to stop.
14:15Lucy has caught Curtainside thieves in the act.
14:20We're now A605 North.
14:23It is failing to stop.
14:25It's a hasty getaway with a van load of stolen goods.
14:29If the driver can keep hold of them.
14:31There's parcels falling out of the back of the vehicle.
14:41We're now into Thrapston.
14:44I think there were some other people in the hedge line.
14:47There was torches flashing in the hedge line.
14:50It's likely the crime gang had to spot a car as well as this van.
14:54Unluckily for the van driver, it's him Lucy got a glimpse of.
14:58From what I could see of the driver, it was a fairly well-built male
15:04wearing a light-coloured grey jumper.
15:07Still into Thrapston Village, speed 2.7, low risk.
15:11As pursuits go, it's strangely slow and steady.
15:15He was panicking, didn't he? He didn't know what to do.
15:18Perhaps the thieves don't want to risk losing any more loot.
15:23Left, left. Speed 2.3.
15:26Speed 2.3.
15:28Or perhaps they're looking for somewhere to bail out.
15:35As the passenger side opens, one is out and running.
15:41It's touch and go.
15:43He's still going, isn't he?
15:44I've had one bail out on foot. Stand by.
15:48But the van comes to a stop.
15:52Running now would not be a wise move.
15:55Stay there.
15:56Stay there.
15:59There's another suspect also in the passenger seat.
16:03I've got one detained, one's run off.
16:06I need officers to me.
16:08Put your handbrake on, mate. Put the handbrake on.
16:10Put the handbrake on.
16:12Right, we'll put it in gear then.
16:15No, it's not. It's rolling, mate.
16:17Too late.
16:19It's rolled backwards into my car.
16:22But a prank to the Skoda is a small price to pay for bagging a suspected thief.
16:27This male is compliant.
16:29He was the driver for certain, although he's now sitting in the passenger seat.
16:35Bryn's bark may have stopped one suspect from running.
16:38Just so we've covered the legal side, at the minute you're under arrest for failing to stop, alright?
16:43But with another unit on scene to deal with the driver...
16:48Bryn and Lucy turn their attention to looking for his accomplice.
16:52Hold a minute.
16:56Dream Team Lucy and five-year-old German Shepherd Bryn once tracked three armed robbers who'd taken a car at gunpoint.
17:06Yes, yes, I've got like an office block to my left.
17:10We're tracking up towards the car park.
17:12And this evening Bryn's finely tuned sense of smell...
17:15One-seven, where I am, the dog's indicating over the fence.
17:19Some back gardens.
17:21...is catching a whiff of curtain sight thief.
17:23Um, he's definitely gone this way, but it's a spiked fence.
17:29Finding a way into the garden on the other side...
17:32Where is he then?
17:34Bryn is drawn to a shed, which has been left wide open.
17:42They've been in there, haven't they?
17:44Hands locked.
17:45I think he's gone back, because he was all in that garden.
17:48It looks like the thief could be on the move.
17:57Taking a left down another alleyway.
18:00Tracking quite strongly now.
18:03The canine cop has a solid lead.
18:06So we're tracking downhill.
18:08Until all of a sudden, the track goes cold.
18:16This is a pick-up point.
18:19100%.
18:21Tried him in all four directions and he's just... nothing.
18:24He came flying down here as well.
18:26Despite Bryn's best efforts, Lucy suspects the runner has been picked up by other gang members in the spotter car.
18:33He's worked his nuts off, bless him, he's done really well.
18:37Good lad.
18:39Good boy.
18:41Yes he is.
18:43He's a good lad.
18:45What's the best way back from here?
18:46Back at the scene, cops have discovered the getaway van is a stolen vehicle on false plates.
18:52And the bloke Lucy arrested is a disqualified driver.
18:56He clearly was pretending he wasn't the driver, because he was sat in the passenger seat when we got round to him.
19:01Which is an age-old trick.
19:03But unfortunately for him, I saw him in the driver's seat.
19:07So, unlucky.
19:09To come across a crime in progress like that is quite rare.
19:15And to obviously get the driver of the stolen vehicle arrested is a brilliant result.
19:20Really, really pleased.
19:22Good boy.
19:24Good boy.
19:26Come on then, in.
19:28Good lad.
19:30Next stop, the services, to continue the investigation.
19:33Not before a little carriageway clear up.
19:41This is one of the boxes that came out of that van.
19:45Can't tell what it is, but we'll take it back to the lorry.
19:52Can have that back.
19:54At the service station, it looks like more boxes were destined to be stolen, had Lucy not intercepted.
19:59So, this will be where they've cut the side to have a look at what's inside.
20:05And then, they've evidently tried to pull some of the bits out of here to see what the property is.
20:13It looks like...
20:17It's electronic equipment of some description.
20:21Sound bar, subwoofers, it's going to be relatively expensive electronic equipment, I would say.
20:26And given that that Luton van was half full of these boxes, I would say we've probably prevented quite a high value theft from taking place.
20:38So, yeah, good.
20:42High value indeed.
20:44Lucy recovered around £3,500 worth of stolen goods.
20:47The man in the van is awaiting trial for stealing from the lorry, driving whilst banned and without insurance.
20:58No legal action was taken against him in relation to the damage to Lucy's car or the nicked van.
21:04Coming up...
21:07I've got a town centre C3, I see a vehicle swerving.
21:11The interceptors go looking for a drink driving suspect.
21:15What was that about?
21:17I was moving out of the way of traffic.
21:19And the van crash suspect goes looking for the interceptors.
21:23You all right, mate? This is my vehicle, I just had to get my insurance details from my friend's house.
21:27Oh, interesting.
21:28Northamptonshire is home to nearly three quarters of a million people.
21:49Many will take to the roads during rush hour and could face increased dangers.
21:54The main issues with driving sort of during rush hour is just the volume of traffic and the fact that people tend to be quite impatient.
22:05If a car loses control where there's a lot of pedestrians around, for instance, like children walking over in school,
22:14it can be catastrophic really for them because cars are effectively one-ton killing machines.
22:22It's the Friday morning rush hour.
22:37And interceptor Callum Donoghue is blue lighting through traffic to the scene of a crash.
22:42A van has apparently collided with a pole and the drivers fled from the scene.
22:47We're going to really need to try and identify where the drivers got and work out the reason why they fled from the scene.
22:56Callum has an early prediction on the reason for the drivers disappearing act.
23:00I would normally be suspected drink or drugs, so we'll see what we can find when we get there.
23:07At 8.15 in the morning, Northampton streets are busy with commuters and families on the school run.
23:12There it is.
23:16This crash and dash has caused serious damage, but it could have been lethal.
23:22Very proper six-one.
23:31I'll pass you the wedge of this van.
23:34After ploughing into a pedestrian crossing, the abandoned van is wedged on the top of the railings and blocking one lane of traffic.
23:41A lady out there said he's done a red light.
23:51Yeah.
23:52Laurie's flipped him, then he's made off.
23:53Oh, interesting.
23:54Where's the lady?
23:56Whilst the fire crew fight any further danger by disconnecting the wrecked van's battery, Callum speaks to the eyewitness.
24:02To say it happened, because I came out of Brad's office, it happened.
24:05Yeah.
24:06As I run you lot, he done a run us, so.
24:09What was his description?
24:11About 5'8".
24:12Yeah.
24:13Very skinny, crew cut hair, beige coloured shorts, white train, blue top.
24:20He's stupid.
24:22Why are you so eager to get across the red light floor?
24:26It's red.
24:27There's emptying traffic at this time of the morning.
24:30It's a stupid move.
24:33Thankfully, no one seems to have been injured.
24:36It's pretty stable, it's not been there.
24:37Yeah.
24:38So, if you're happy, we'll leave you too.
24:40Absolutely mate, that's fine.
24:42Now the scene is safe, Callum can focus on solving the mystery of the vanishing van driver.
24:49We'll wait for the vehicle to get recovered, and then we'll go round to the address where it's registered to,
24:53and see if we can speak to the driver or the owner.
24:55See if he's using drugs or any alcohol, see what his explanation is for this.
25:03Because he's parked it very interestingly.
25:06Even more interestingly, the runaway driver has left their motor unlocked and full of expensive power tools.
25:13There'll be a bigger reason behind it, and it's annoying me because I'm yet to find out why.
25:18But, leave it with us.
25:20We'll get an answer by the end of the day.
25:22An answer might present itself sooner than Callum is expecting.
25:26You alright mate, this is my vehicle, I just had to go and get my insurance details from my friend's house.
25:30Oh, interesting.
25:31Sorry.
25:32The van driver has come back.
25:33What happened?
25:34Basically, the light's changed, and a lorry come round here.
25:36Yeah.
25:37And I've had to swear to Mr. Lorry, and I ended up going up the...
25:40Basically, so I didn't hit anything, I thought I hit the central reservation.
25:43Oh. How fast were you going?
25:45I only felt 30.
25:48What, 30 from there?
25:49That takes a bit of force, doesn't it?
25:51Huh?
25:52That takes a bit of force to get it up there.
25:53Oh, I was...
25:54Yeah, I was doing 30, mate.
25:56Have you got your license on you?
25:57Yes.
26:00Callum is an advanced driver, who is trained to handle anything from a high-performance pursuit car,
26:05to a riot van, or a 4x4 response car.
26:11Have you been involved in a collision? I'll have to put you on a breath test and a drugs test as well,
26:14just to make sure that's all fine.
26:16Is this van crash just a simple accident, or are Callum's suspicions about drink or drugs correct?
26:23Just make a seal around it with your lips and one long continuous blow until I tell you to stop, okay?
26:26Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
26:29Stop.
26:30That's the time at the same time as you.
26:33Zero.
26:34One test passed, one to go.
26:36So, not as I first assumed, we'll still wait on the results of the drug wipe.
26:42He's very nervous, but he came back, and I'd argue if there was something more to hide, he probably wouldn't have come back.
26:49Another unit are en route with the drug wipe kit.
26:53In the meantime, Callum and a recovery worker are coming up with a plan to get the van off the rush hour roads.
27:00Let this lot go through.
27:03Do you need this one closed as well?
27:05Leave that one open.
27:06Or just this bit?
27:07Yeah.
27:08He's somehow going to go over there and lift it onto the back of his truck.
27:11So we've got to close the whole road, which will be interesting, because everyone wants to try and squeeze past this morning.
27:16Already all I've got to do is set the crane up, put the crane above it, pick it and we're awake.
27:21Cool.
27:22At the next red light, the recovery truck moves in.
27:27Callum closes the second lane.
27:30You can't get that way, because the van in the way can't get that way, because the truck will be in the way.
27:33Cheers mate.
27:35And operation van lift begins.
27:41Weighing in at over a tonne,
27:44The van is wrenched from the railings.
27:51I bet he's great at the grabber machines in the arcade.
27:58Job done.
28:00With a clearer view, Callum notices a problem with one of the tyres.
28:05There's one here.
28:07They've got enough tread on them, haven't they?
28:08Well, that's got cords showing.
28:09Oh shit!
28:10Right.
28:12Bald tyres can increase stopping distances, but so can drug driving.
28:21Having got the rush hour traffic moving again, another officer has arrived with a drug wipe test.
28:26Cheeks, just get some saliva on the end of your tunnel for me.
28:29Do you take drugs at all?
28:30No.
28:31Straight from there.
28:32Okay.
28:33Lovely.
28:34So it takes eight minutes to fully work.
28:35Cool.
28:36Alright, it's going to give us a reading of cannabis or cocaine.
28:40Or hopefully nothing.
28:42Now we play the waiting game.
28:44One in twenty fatalities on our roads are caused by drug drivers.
28:50Within minutes, it seems that some suspicions could be correct.
28:54You see on the bottom one?
28:55Yeah.
28:57There's a second line under there.
28:58Right, okay.
28:59That shows that it's testing positive for cocaine.
29:02Shouldn't do.
29:03Well, that's what the machine says.
29:05So, at this moment in time, you're under arrest, okay?
29:06I'm suspicious of drug drive.
29:08You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you don't mention one question,
29:10something you should later on in court.
29:12Anything you do say may be given evidence.
29:13Having failed the roadside drug test, the van driver is taken to custody to give a blood sample for forensic testing.
29:23Obviously, it's a Friday morning.
29:24There's lots of pedestrian traffic about, as we saw.
29:27Kids going to school, et cetera.
29:29It was on quite a main road in Northampton.
29:31And for him to make that sort of manoeuvre, to be wedged into the fence, he was doing a bit of speed.
29:38Just lucky no one was stood in the middle of the crossing when that collision did happen.
29:44Blood test results confirmed the van driver was over the limit for cocaine.
29:49He pleaded guilty to drug driving and was banned from the roads for 17 months.
30:02When it comes to collisions involving drink drivers, the number of fatalities are at their highest level for more than a decade.
30:10Setting his sights on taking those over the limit off the road is Harrison Beverley.
30:15So, we're on a Sunday night shift.
30:18We've got the England match on tonight, the first match of the Euros against Serbia.
30:22So, expect it could be a bit busier than normal for a Sunday night.
30:26Potentially on the road, looking at people that have been watching the match, a few drinks potentially.
30:30So, we'll keep an eye out for that.
30:36Football fan Harrison supports Middlesbrough FC.
30:39As the night draws in, he's pleased to learn that England have scored a win.
30:44However...
30:45Lloyd, I'm just off at Junction 10 now. Are you still Barn Road out of town?
30:51Yes, mate.
30:53Interceptor's V suspected drink driver is about to begin.
30:57We've got a town centre C3. I see a vehicle swerving.
31:01Nearly hit another vehicle, I think.
31:03So, I'm going to give him a leg up with getting the vehicle stopped.
31:08Fellow Interceptor Lloyd is already behind the erratic driver.
31:13So, Harrison is plotting up, ready to join us back up.
31:17Yeah, it's got four or five occupants, I think he said.
31:20So, we want to try and get stopped.
31:22And, obviously, if you've just been seeing him driving that bad on camera,
31:24just double checking out of a drink or anything.
31:26You know, it's the England match tonight.
31:27You'd hope that people are sensible.
31:29But, should be coming past us in a second.
31:33What's the need, mate?
31:38Yeah.
31:41Harrison falls in directly behind the suspect.
31:44Enough of you with compliance off of Junction 10, Lloyd, you reckon?
31:48Yeah, Sam.
31:52Four passengers in a car with a suspected drink driver
31:55could be a recipe for disaster.
31:59See if it stopped here, there's a bit of safety in the road for him.
32:02Without delay, they're lighting him up.
32:13Either he's failing to stop, or something might be slowing the driver's reactions.
32:16Just as Lloyd calls it in, the suspect comes to a stop.
32:30Standby, stop, stop.
32:34Get out of the car.
32:35What was that about?
32:39I was moving out of the way of traffic.
32:41You were?
32:42Give it up.
32:43I was.
32:44Vehicle stop, no damage.
32:46We've got the keys.
32:47It's five off at the minute.
32:49Yeah.
32:50Lloyd gets straight to the point.
32:52The reason we're stopping you, mate, is we might be driving quite bad in the town centre.
32:56I thought that was a straight look.
32:57I didn't charge a car.
32:58Any alcohol drinks in here?
33:01I had a couple of bites while we were watching the Eurose, that was it.
33:03When was your last drink?
33:06It's 25 last midnight now.
33:09Good hour ago.
33:10You had to try to stress when we left the roadside.
33:12Mark the ball, mate.
33:13Yeah.
33:15Refusing the breathalyser is an offence in itself.
33:18If this footy fan's got nothing to hide, it's in his interest to play ball.
33:22Okay, nice step.
33:23I'll hold onto the device.
33:24Nice.
33:25Take a big deep breath and blow until I tell you to stop, please.
33:29Blow.
33:30You're not blowing.
33:31Okay?
33:32Yeah.
33:33Stop messing around.
33:34Okay?
33:35Yeah, man.
33:36Yeah, imagine you're blowing a balloon, okay?
33:37Yeah, man.
33:38You can't trick the machine, mate.
33:39All right?
33:40If you're not blowing, if you don't blow hard enough again, then it's what's called failing
33:42to provide, we should be arrested for.
33:43All right?
33:44Do you understand?
33:45Yeah.
33:46Lovely.
33:47Big deep breath.
33:48Blow out until I tell you to start.
33:50Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going.
33:52Lovely, thank you.
33:53There, that'll analyse the sample of breath that you've given us.
33:56Totally.
33:57You're all right.
33:59Legal limit at the roadside is 35.
34:04Fail at 72.
34:05So this one at the time you're under arrest, driving whilst I'm spraying alcohol,
34:08I'm saying anything.
34:09No, the defensive one, I don't want to have questions.
34:10We'll catch on the court.
34:11You can't do so in the evidence.
34:12All right?
34:13Put your hands out.
34:14I think you're all right.
34:15I'm all right.
34:16We're good to take my boat.
34:17No.
34:18He's going to be sent off to custody.
34:19Should have drive like idiot, mate.
34:21And his mate will be taking the safer option of a stroll home.
34:26After a word from Harrison.
34:28I would say filming and laughing at your mate who's now with us is pretty stupid.
34:32Yeah?
34:33So please step out of the car.
34:39Good job.
34:40You don't want people like this driving, especially with passengers in the vehicle.
34:42You know, he's doubled the drink drive limit.
34:44Potentially prevented a serious accident.
34:48Drink drivers kill people.
34:50I've got no sympathy.
34:51What time am I going to be out tomorrow?
34:53Don't know.
34:56You got work?
34:57I don't know.
34:58What time you got work?
34:59I'm going to be getting picked for half five.
35:01Yeah, you won't be going to work at half five, mate.
35:04And there's one more bit of bad news for the driver.
35:07Probably he's failed to stop initially.
35:09We're going to get a second section 59 warning mate, which means we're going to seize your car.
35:14Section 59 warnings are issued for anti-social driving.
35:18Thanks to his earlier dodgy driving, he's totted up two section 59s within 12 months, and his motor is shown the red card.
35:28I think he's going to have some regrets when he wakes up later today.
35:34After failing the breath test at custody, he was convicted of drink driving and disqualified for 18 months.
35:41He also had to pay £859 in costs and a fine.
35:48You see all sorts as an interceptor.
36:03And another set of wheels bombing along the pavement is raising eyebrows for Ian Bayliss.
36:07Up there, mate. You can't ride that on the road.
36:12That's it.
36:13You see that? It doesn't matter.
36:15Look, pull up and then we'll have a chat.
36:17Are you going to take it here?
36:18Well, I don't know yet.
36:20He's going to be spotted.
36:21Okay, well pull up and let's have a look.
36:23That ride could land this bloke in hot water. He claims he's just picked up the electric quad bike for his son.
36:33You can't ride that on the road.
36:34I thought it was just like a mobility scooter.
36:38Yeah.
36:39It's not, it's a motorcycle.
36:41So, technically you need insurance, a driving licence, and everything.
36:46And have you got any of that?
36:47I have, yeah.
36:48You've got it all.
36:49I've got a driver licence.
36:51You've got insurance.
36:53See, that's where I have to take it now.
36:55Look at my place. He's literally just got it.
36:56Where do you live?
36:57I'll lift, I'll push it back down. I'll listen, push it back.
37:00That cannot be on the road?
37:01I'll push it back.
37:03Okay.
37:04Yeah, I'll take the outlet, I'll put it in pocket and I'll push it back.
37:07Potentially Ian could seize the mini motor.
37:10It's classed as a mechanically propelled vehicle, which is a, it's effectively a motorcycle.
37:16Yeah.
37:17Same as a quad.
37:18It doesn't matter if it's electric.
37:19Electric.
37:20I don't think they've got it.
37:21No.
37:23But he decides the best road to take here is some words of advice.
37:27If he wants to ride it, you have to take it somewhere.
37:29Private land.
37:30You can't just blast down, especially pavements as well.
37:34And the good old section 59 warning comes in handy again.
37:38If this is seen on the road again.
37:40Yeah.
37:41Okay.
37:42I'll put a thing in with your name on it.
37:43It applies to you and the bike.
37:46And then we take it.
37:48Yeah.
37:49Sorted.
37:50Right.
37:52Walk it.
37:53Yeah.
37:54Well done.
37:55Thank you very much.
37:56He can stay on it.
37:57But you're walking.
37:58And you ain't riding it.
37:59No.
38:01Cheers.
38:02Good luck.
38:04Anyone else in the top of that?
38:05Cheers mate.
38:06Damn right.
38:07Yeah.
38:08See you later.
38:09Two happy customers walk their new main machine home.
38:16Still to come.
38:17Hello there.
38:18A rescue mission on the A-14.
38:22You got it.
38:23You're on.
38:24And Griff gets a couple of new crew mates.
38:27As we've already seen the interceptors don't always get a warm reception.
38:28But managing suspects is only part of their day to day duties.
38:30A vast chunk of our time isn't dealt with chasing criminals.
38:31That's why we've already seen the interceptors don't always get a warm reception.
38:37But managing suspects is only part of their day to day duties.
38:43A vast chunk of our time isn't dealt with chasing criminals down.
38:44It's dealt with helping people.
38:45And that's what drives most cops to get out of bed in the morning is to the roots of policing.
38:52It's all about community.
38:53It's about serving the communities in which we live.
38:56And that's what drives most cops to get out of bed in the morning.
38:57It's the roots of policing.
38:58dealt with chasing criminals down it's dealt with helping people and undoubtedly that's what drives
39:05most cops to get out of bed in the mornings to the roots of policing it's all about community
39:10it's about serving the communities in which we live so to try and make people's days
39:16a little bit better and to make those communities safer places
