01:01Halloween Party Panic!
01:03Mwahahahaha!
01:05There!
01:06Just in time for Halloween!
01:07Mwahahahaha!
01:08You must need new batteries.
01:11I can't wait for everyone to see my Halloween costume!
01:20Me too!
01:21It's too bad our class's costume party isn't until tomorrow.
01:24Uh-huh!
01:25Molly, what's your costume anyway?
01:26If I show you now, it'll spoil the surprise!
01:27Come on!
01:28Show us!
01:29Please?
01:30Yeah!
01:31Well, I guess I can show you!
01:33But you have to show me your costumes too!
01:35Yeah!
01:36We've got it!
01:37We've got it!
01:38We've got it!
01:39From the Andromeda Galaxy, here's Molly the Astronaut!
01:42Come on, show us.
01:44Please?
01:46Yeah!
01:47Well, I guess I can show you.
01:51But you have to show me your costumes, too.
01:54Yeah, we've got it.
02:00From the Andromeda galaxy,
02:03here's Molly the Astronaut!
02:07Wow!
02:10That's one small step for Kaya,
02:13and one giant leap for Kaya Kai.
02:21From the Cretaceous period,
02:23it's the Tyrannosaurus Rex!
02:30Amazing!
02:33Jake, what's your costume?
02:36Um, Trini and I are kind of doing a thing together.
02:40Ooh!
02:41Let us see! Let us see!
02:43Let us see!
02:46I'm Kiwana Chasing Horse,
02:48from the Han Gwich'in and Cichangu Oglala Lakota tribes.
02:53I'm an environmental protector and fashion model.
02:57Oh, yeah!
02:58Yeah, Trini!
03:00Your turn, Jake!
03:02And I'm the first person to reach the top of Denali.
03:07Koi-Kon mountain climber, Walter Harper!
03:11Ta-da!
03:12I'm a mountain climber, see?
03:17Not bad for being made out of paper bags, huh?
03:21I thought you'd be impressed,
03:22but you can't even speak!
03:25I...
03:27That's not how a mountain climber dresses.
03:31Um, five-strand antallium shell necklaces are something only chiefs or their families wear.
03:41You're not supposed to wear regalia.
03:46Are people supposed to wear regalia as a Halloween costume?
03:50Um...
03:52No.
03:53They're not.
03:54But...
03:55Walter Harper was Koi-Kon, wasn't he?
03:59How can I be him for Halloween if I can't dress like him?
04:04I'm not sure.
04:07But it's really not right to wear regalia as a costume.
04:12Great!
04:13Now I don't have a Halloween costume.
04:16Uh...
04:17Hang on, Jake.
04:19Yeah!
04:20Maybe we can think of something else you can be.
04:24I can't be Walter Harper.
04:26I don't want to be anybody at all.
04:31I...
04:32Think we hurt his feelings.
04:34Yeah...
04:36Come on.
04:37Let's try to go catch him.
04:39Now you'll be laughing till New Year's.
04:49Everyone thinks my costume is a joke.
04:55Uh...
04:56Jake?
04:57What happened?
05:00Miss Tim!
05:04It's not funny!
05:05What happened?
05:06We were showing off our costumes.
05:07But Jake's costume made me...
05:08Chukwity.
05:09So sad.
05:10Me too.
05:11Me three.
05:12Why, sweetie?
05:13He was dressed like Walter Harper, but his costume wasn't a costume.
05:18It looked like our regalia.
05:19Oh, I see why that would upset you.
05:20You know, our regalia is an important part of our culture.
05:37But people who aren't from Alaskan Native cultures might not understand our customs.
05:43But people who aren't from Alaska Native cultures might not understand our customs,
05:48our rules around who can wear regalia and when.
05:53It's fun to dress up, but someone's culture and the things they wear for sacred occasions
05:59aren't a costume.
06:01Does that mean Jake shouldn't dress like Walter Harper?
06:07And I shouldn't dress like Quan a chasing horse?
06:13Of course you can.
06:15And Jake can dress like Walter Harper too.
06:18He just might need help finding the right way to do it.
06:22What's the right way?
06:25By dressing like the person,
06:26finding out who they are and what they'd like to do outside of their cultural identity,
06:30and dressing like that.
06:33Trini did that!
06:35I did?
06:36Aha! You didn't wear regalia!
06:39You wore stuff that was about things Quan a chasing horse likes to do.
06:43Yeah, like taking care of the environment and protecting animals.
06:48Halloween is tomorrow.
06:50If we're going to help Jake find a better costume, we have to do it fast.
06:54So, what do we search for?
06:59How about Walter Harper?
07:05Oh, click on that one.
07:07Mrs. Marsh says that's a website we can trust.
07:09Oh yeah, you're right.
07:11The caption says,
07:16When he wasn't climbing, Walter Harper favored the modern fashion of the day and wore three-piece suits.
07:24Whoa!
07:25It would take a lot of grocery bags to make that.
07:28And a lot of time.
07:30What else does it say?
07:32This says, in addition to being a skilled mountaineer, Walter Harper was also very strong.
07:43When visiting an amusement park, Walter Harper hit a test-your-strength bell with such force,
07:50the needle spun around twice before breaking from the strength of Harper's mighty blow.
07:57Ooh, do they have a picture of that?
08:00Aqua.
08:04Scroll down and see if there are other pictures.
08:09This caption says,
08:10Walter Harper and fellow explorer climbing Denali.
08:15The picture's so dark, you can't tell which one is Walter Harper or what he's wearing.
08:21Ooh, this caption says,
08:24The Walter Harper monument entitled A Hand Up,
08:28which shows Walter Harper climbing Denali.
08:33Looks like we found Jake's costume.
08:35Got everything.
08:51Town Jake's costume.
08:52Be back in a bit.
08:56I said, it's not funny.
08:58We were just going to your house.
09:13We're sorry we made you feel bad about your costume.
09:16I still don't understand what I did wrong.
09:20It was the regalia.
09:25To us, it isn't a costume.
09:28It's something really special.
09:31It's secret.
09:33And we only wear it on special occasions.
09:35We have customs about when we can wear it.
09:39It feels disrespectful to wear it as a costume.
09:44I didn't mean to be disrespectful.
09:46I really like Walter Harper and was trying to honor him.
09:52You still can.
09:52Molly's mom says,
09:55The trick is to dress like the person, not like the culture.
09:59But the Halloween parade is tomorrow.
10:03I don't have time to make a new costume.
10:05We've got you covered.
10:08Literally.
10:09Okay, let's get this Halloween parade started.
10:16First up, we have Oscar as an eagle.
10:20Next up, we have Tui Ukami as a salmon.
10:29Very impressive look-cho costume, Tui.
10:33Next up, Kaya's very own astronaut, Molly Mabre,
10:37who's taking a trip through time with Vera the T-Rex.
10:46Oh, a Tyrannavira Rex.
10:49I love it.
10:52And astronaut, Molly, going on an adventure.
10:55So clever, you two.
10:57And next, we have Trini as Alaska's own
11:00Quanah chasing horse.
11:02Defend the sacred!
11:04Protect the caribou!
11:07And Jake as Walter Harper.
11:13Ha-ha!
11:14I'm off to Denali.
11:16I'll send you a picture of me at the top.
11:19Amazing!
11:25Rawr!
11:30Ugh, silly little T-Rex arms.
11:34Whoa!
11:35Good moves!
11:37Masi!
11:40Thanks for helping me dress like my hero in the right way.
11:44Happy to help!
11:45And masi, Jake, for respecting our traditions.
11:50It means so much.
11:53Yeah.
11:54Wanna moonwalk with me?
11:55Sure!
11:56Come on, kids!
11:58Everyone dance!
11:59Hey, everyone!
12:01Mollie here to answer your questions about life in Alaska.
12:05Nicole from Tulsa, Oklahoma asks,
12:08What's a cussbuck?
12:09Cussbuck's are traditional hoodies, like the one I wear.
12:11My friends can tell you more.
12:13Hi, Lollie.
12:14I'm in Anchorage today on Dena'ina lands.
12:17Today, I'm going to call Nikki and learn how to sew cussbuck.
12:23Hello.
12:23Hi, my name is Nikki Corbett.
12:25I've been sewing cussbuck since I was about nine.
12:28I made my first one.
12:29Traditionally, Yupik cussbuck were made using your hand prints.
12:34So you would measure how tall you are.
12:36So hand measurements going down, hand measurements here.
12:41The first step, cut out your body.
12:43Once you have all your pieces cut out,
12:45you're going to iron everything in the fold.
12:47And then once you've got all those,
12:49you're ready to start piecing it together.
12:51Are you ready to sew your own?
12:54The first thing I need to do is take measurements from my cussbuck.
12:59My chest measurement is tuna fingertip.
13:01This is how big I'm going to make my neck hole.
13:07Next, I'm going to cut out the fabric.
13:10The fabric I picked is like an orange, yellow, and a golden.
13:16And it's really pretty.
13:23Now I'm pinning the ribbon to the sleeve.
13:26I'm ironing the sleeve so I can match up the seams when I'm sewing.
13:32Now I'm ready to start sewing.
13:33I'm starting by sewing the sleeves.
13:37I'm a Nubiak.
13:38Instead of cussbuck, we call it iti khwak.
13:42Many areas in Alaska have their own styles.
13:46This is my last stitch.
13:50Thank you, Nikki, for showing me how to make my first cussbuck.
13:53Bye, Molly.
13:56Must see Cho.
13:57Thanks for asking and see you next time.
14:01The Spruce Sleuths.
14:07Wow.
14:08Everything is so sparkly today.
14:12Shruchka.
14:17I love Kaya when it's all green like this.
14:21Me too.
14:25Look at those trees down there.
14:27Oh, wow.
14:31They don't look very good, do they?
14:34No.
14:35I wonder why they're so rusty looking.
14:40No idea.
14:41But I have a feeling you're gonna figure it out.
14:46Me too.
14:47Hup.
14:48Ho.
14:54Hup.
14:54Ho.
14:56Whoa.
14:59Looks like Molly's on a mission.
15:01Hey, Dreamy.
15:03What do you got on spruce trees?
15:07Looking for Christmas trees already?
15:11No.
15:12My mom and I flew over a bunch of spruce trees nearby
15:16and the needles were all rusty.
15:19Oh, and you want to figure out why?
15:23Yes.
15:24Ooh, a mystery.
15:26I love mysteries.
15:29Right this way, Spruce Sleuths.
15:32Ooh, Spruce Sleuths.
15:35I like it.
15:40This book has information on various trees and plants in Alaska
15:44and their pests and diseases.
15:47Thanks, Dad.
15:49Spruce Sleuths, we're Spruce Sleuths.
15:51We'll keep on looking till we find the, uh, truths.
15:54Huh, Sleuths is a hard word to rhyme.
16:05We can use the index to find stuff about spruce trees faster.
16:09Hmm, here it is, Spruce Trees, Common Problems, pages 102 through 106.
16:21Sounds like what we need.
16:24Problem, purple needles and white resin.
16:32Hmm, that's not it.
16:35Yellow needles, leader branch, Jeff.
16:39Needles eaten.
16:41Ooh, rusty needles!
16:44That's the problem we're looking for!
16:48Rusty needles are caused by spruce beetles.
16:52That little bitty bug is hurting those great big trees?
16:57It's as tiny as a pencil eraser.
17:01Yeah, what else does it say?
17:06Alaska's hotter temperatures are creating problems for our spruce.
17:11The warming trend means more spruce beetles survive winter.
17:15The more that survive, the more damage they do when they lay eggs inside the spruce's bark.
17:22That doesn't sound good.
17:29To make matters worse, Alaska is getting less rain, making it even harder for the trees to feed themselves.
17:38Poor hungry trees.
17:41What does it say to do about it?
17:43Ooh, this says, solution!
17:47Cut up and burn dead trees to keep beetles from spreading to other trees.
17:54Water trees that show signs of spruce beetle damage to help the trees stay healthy.
17:59Only two things!
18:00Great!
18:01Oh.
18:02Only...
18:03We're kids.
18:04We can't use chainsaws.
18:05No.
18:06But we know people who can.
18:08The stand of spruce are on the other side of the river, just past Big Rock Bend.
18:22We could use the Nalbe Bridge to get across the river.
18:28Who's ready to save trees?
18:31We are!
18:32We are!
18:33We are!
18:34Let's go!
18:35Yeah!
18:38Trini!
18:39This way!
18:43Oh.
18:44Sorry.
18:45Yeah!
18:48Come on, Trini!
18:49Wait up, Trini!
18:51All right.
18:52Let's go.
19:17There's the Nalbe Bridge!
19:18There's the Nalbe Bridge!
19:24Whee!
19:28Those spruce are gonna be so happy to see us!
19:32Gotcha!
19:33That was close.
19:35Look!
19:37Oh, no!
19:38The bridge is washed out!
19:42Oh, no!
19:43How are we gonna help the trees if we can't get to the other side?
19:49Could we use a boat?
19:51It's way too rocky for a boat.
19:53With all this equipment, we definitely can't cross through that water.
19:57It's way too fast.
20:01Sorry, trees.
20:03Guess we can't help you after all.
20:05Actually, I think we can.
20:11How?
20:13Ta-da!
20:17Ta-da!
20:21A zipline!
20:23Uh...
20:25How?
20:26What?
20:27Why?
20:29Ordered too much cable.
20:30Hated to see it go to waste.
20:32This is amazing!
20:40Hang on.
20:41I haven't used it in a while.
20:42Let me do a test run first.
20:53I'll let you know when I'm on the other side.
20:56Wahoo!
20:57I didn't hear a crash.
20:58Works great!
20:59Ready to go, Rowley!
21:01All right, Mr. Rowley!
21:03Woo!
21:05Now send over my tools!
21:06Okay, the last of the tools are on the way!
21:07I guess I'm next.
21:08Wish me luck.
21:09Wish me luck.
21:10Good luck.
21:11Yee-hoo!
21:12Yee-hoo!
21:13Woo-hoo!
21:14Woo!
21:16I guess I'm next.
21:18Wish me luck.
21:19Now send over my tools!
21:25Okay, the last of the tools are on the way!
21:32I guess I'm next.
21:34Wish me luck.
21:36Good luck.
21:39Yee-hoo!
21:43Yippee!
21:47Woo-hoo!
21:53Woo-hoo!
21:55Beagles have fair magic hair!
22:01Nope, nope, nope, nope!
22:04Whoa!
22:06Woo-hoo!
22:07Yeah!
22:09They didn't trade me for this in library school!
22:17Okay, we're here.
22:19Let's cut these dead trees and then we'll water the rest.
22:23Alright folks, start your engines!
22:46Huh!
22:48Huh, huh, huh, huh.
22:50Huh, huh?
22:54Huh!
22:56Huh!
22:57Huh!
22:58Huh, huh, huh?
23:03Huh!
23:05Huh!
23:07Huh.
23:08Ah, all right. That's all of them.
23:19Musty Cho, everybody, for helping.
23:22We'll snow machine over in winter and pick up all this firewood.
23:25Woo! Sure will.
23:28I'm so proud of you girls.
23:30I'm proud of us, too.
23:33I just realized something really exciting.
23:37What?
23:38We get to ride the zipline back.
23:42Yay!
23:43Let's go!
23:45Yeah!
23:48Trini, this way!
23:52Oh, sorry.
23:53Yeah!
24:03I sure hope our hard work helps the spruce trees.
24:07Yeah, well, we should know in a few weeks.
24:11Hopefully we'll see lots of new little green spruce tips.
24:15I hope so.
24:19Molly! Look!
24:20We did it, Mom!
24:25We did it, Mom!
24:25The trees are green again!
24:31Way to go, Molly Doodle!
24:33They look so good!
24:36But you know, just to be sure, we should probably get a closer look.
24:49You mean ride the zipline again?
24:52I sure do!
24:53I sure do!
24:54I sure do!
24:57Let's go!
24:58Yee-haw!
24:59Hey, everyone!
25:01Molly of Denali is made possible in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people, these generous supporters, and by viewers like you.
