00:01DVD is such a fantastic format because it's just so convenient and compact.
00:06I think DVD is clearly the best format right now.
00:11As a viewer and a director, I just love the format.
00:14I think it's the best format out there.
00:21The two things about DVD that are so great is, number one,
00:24you get the best picture and the best sound possible.
00:27And number two, you can actually put information and materials
00:32that in some ways really educate the audience
00:36as to what was involved in making the film.
00:38You look somewhat like a mouse.
00:40Yeah, well, I am somewhat like a mouse.
00:44I think the DVD is another production, an enhancement to the feature film
00:50because there's so much opportunity to create work beyond just the theatrical movie.
00:55I mean, as a director, having the chance to actually do an audio commentary is wonderful
00:59because, you know, you can record for posterity.
01:01Some of the secrets, obviously, that you have while making the movie
01:04that otherwise people would never know
01:05and were critical to the success of the films.
01:07I'm, like, seeing now that, like, the DVD comes earlier and earlier.
01:18I like that because I'm really somebody who goes at least once a week, you know,
01:24in the store and buys DVDs.
01:26I started, like, really, like, buying the same movies I have on video.
01:30I buy them now on DVD.
01:32We're looking at a completely new species.
01:34The first of its kind.
01:35DVDs give you the possibility as a filmmaker to show, like,
01:38how the movie was done, how the effects were done.
01:43There's so much thinking, so much, like, work goes into kind of creating the look of a movie.
01:48For example, I did just now a movie which was a period,
01:51a movie where it would be probably very interesting to give the people a lot of insight
01:55in how difficult it was to create at a certain time.
01:5828 and 12, the levy passed!
02:01Which is really fascinating what, like, kind of work went into recreating that.
02:10We'll take it from here.
02:11I love DVDs because the quality of the image is fantastic.
02:18I watch six or seven DVDs a week,
02:21even DVDs that I already own on videocassette.
02:24I make this look good.
02:26Your typical DVD player and your television set
02:30and the speakers you have in your home
02:32sound better than probably 90% of all the theaters you'll ever be in.
02:39We go back again and do an additional special mix specifically for DVD
02:45because we know that the format can take much more dynamic range.
02:50That's what I'm talking about.
02:52You can have much more information in the subwoofer channels,
02:56which is that big base that you always love in, you know, action movies.
03:02I just think it's an incredibly valuable tool,
03:05both to learn more about the movie and just to see it better than you'll ever see it anywhere else,
03:11except in the best theaters in the world.
03:13You know, the whole idea that you can actually see a movie at home
03:16with something that's really, really close to theatrical quality,
03:19I think is incredible,
03:20and I think DVD, obviously, is a big part of that.
03:24It's a lot about the visuals, it's a lot about the sound,
03:27it's a lot about the quality of image,
03:29and I think DVD is clearly the best format right now.
