00:30I think anybody that enjoys movies, DVD can be like your new best friend.
00:44When a new title is scheduled, we work from the first release date in the world.
00:49We see what we do as a worldwide product.
00:51Like I'm in a black two, we have a team of nine that handle the title from start to finish.
00:56It begins with the planning.
01:01And it can't be stressed enough that in DVD land, it's all about planning.
01:06Timelines are very important throughout the whole process.
01:09You know, we talk about it six months in advance.
01:11Hey, will this work?
01:12The DVD center comes back to say yes or no.
01:14We can definitely bring you back to the end of the same elapsed time.
01:19I see a DVD is that it's a jigsaw puzzle and there's lots of little pieces.
01:23So a trailer may be one piece, a menu will be another piece.
01:26And we have to make sure all those pieces come together.
01:29If one piece of the puzzle falls through the cracks, you can't make this DVD happen.
01:33So everybody is dependent upon everybody else.
01:39A big thing also in the DVD world is menus.
01:42Laserdisc and VHS didn't use them.
01:44And now menus have become a huge part of the DVD process.
01:48It's when you get into these complicated discs and you start dealing with the localized menus.
01:53A French set, a German, Italian, Spanish.
01:56Menu creation is a real combination between high-end technology and the artistic world
02:01where we're trying to make things pop out to the consumer, grab your eye.
02:05But it's relatively difficult to do some of the intense stuff that we're doing for these big projects,
02:09which is really fun, though.
02:18The denuralizer.
02:20In a few moments, transverse magneto energy will surge through your brain,
02:24unlocking information that could hold the key.
02:26Dirt's very survival.
02:28Oh, okay. What's that thing?
02:29There's a kind of interactivity that's never existed before.
02:32I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face.
02:36I should have changed that stupid lock.
02:38I should have...
02:39Frank!
02:39Alien Broadcast is going to be sort of a jump out from the actual film hosted by Frank the Pug.
02:46He's the anchor person or anchor alien for an alien broadcast.
02:49Using this green screen so that we can shoot him against that and then later we'll put him into scenes that will wind up being part of the menus.
02:59This is Mushu.
03:00I think he likes to be called Frank on the set, actually.
03:05He does like to stay in character and he gets especially excited when he's wearing his suit.
03:09Suit was made by the same tailor that made the suit for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
03:13Same material.
03:15Imported from Italy.
03:15And, yes, he's very comfortable.
03:18We went for five or six fittings and they tailored it especially for him.
03:22He loves to come to work.
03:23He gets very upset when he doesn't come.
03:25You can tell by his attitude that he's just enjoying himself.
03:28Never worked with a dog and it's quite an experience.
03:31They're a lot easier to work with than some actors I've worked with.
03:35Mom! Dad! I'm going in!
03:38Stuart Little is back.
03:40I got it! I got it!
03:42The children's market has become a huge boom for DVD.
03:48It's incredibly easy for children to operate a DVD player
03:51and so we gear a lot of our special features towards them.
03:54A lot of DVDs will have a special section especially for the kids
03:57which will have games and puzzles and things that they can do
03:59without an adult necessarily being there pressing the buttons for them.
04:02One of the special features that we're going to have on this disc
04:04is similar to other discs that we've released like Monty Python and The Animal
04:09where you can link out during the movie to little mini featurettes.
04:14It's actually called, what's it called? Show and Tell?
04:15Show and Tell.
04:16I think the filmmakers really see this as the first home entertainment medium
04:21for them to have a meaningful contribution.
04:23It gives them an opportunity to clarify a possible misconception about a film.
04:28When you're doing a DVD like Stuart Little
04:30you have to figure out how you're going to allot your added value material.
04:33Are you going to gear it mostly towards the children?
04:34Are you going to gear it towards the adults?
04:36What demographic are you really trying to hit?
04:38Stuart Little embodies the dreams and aspirations of every small child
04:42that finds themselves smack in the middle of a very grown-up world.
04:47Not everyone is meant to make a difference.
04:50But for me, the choice to live an ordinary life
04:54is no longer an option.
04:57The way to really maximize Spider-Man was in addition to presenting
05:01great featurettes about the making of the film,
05:03screen tests, CGI, studies, costume designs,
05:07that we should also spend an equal amount of time on Spider-Man,
05:11the comic book character that's existed for fans for 40 years.
05:21Directors are now writing into their deals
05:25that they have final directors cut on the DVD.
05:28That's how big it's become.
05:30It gives a filmmaker an opportunity to put his preferred version of the film
05:34on a disc and explain why it's that version.
05:41When Spider-Man comes out on DVD,
05:44everyone's getting it.
05:45Not this guy or that guy.
05:47Everybody.
05:50The Digital Authoring Center is made up of different departments
05:54that all do their work separately.
05:57When you purchase the DVD,
05:59you should be getting the best picture and sound possible.
06:03A lot of people just don't realize
06:06how much technology actually is involved
06:08in bringing DVD to the marketplace.
06:11We do multiple versions of the film.
06:14We'll do a disc for North America,
06:16for Latin America, Asia, Japan,
06:19as well as all European territories.
06:21Sometimes we do as many as six discs just for PAL.
06:25The most important part of our job is listening.
06:28We have to be able to judge synchronization,
06:30which is very difficult.
06:32The rewards are huge
06:34because we're not working on a product
06:36that five people are going to use.
06:37There are millions of people who are going to see these discs.
06:40With great power comes great responsibility.
06:43Who are you?
06:44Who am I?
06:47I'm Spider-Man.
06:49Consumers are expecting more and more added value content.
06:54Men in Black 2,
06:56Spider-Man and Stuart Little 2 will be packed.
06:59When we run up against situations
07:00where there are things that we want to do
07:02that haven't been done before,
07:03we always pull out the trunk card.
07:05This is Sony.
07:05People expect this.
07:07No one else would do it, but Sony would.
07:09Definitely can't pass up
07:10the Sony blockbusters this summer.
07:12If you rent the disc, you're in trouble
07:14because you're going to pay a few days' extra rental charges.
07:16This DVD is going to enjoy a very long, prosperous life.
07:20There's no reason for it not to.
07:27You do too much.
07:28You're not Superman, you know.
