00:00We are in our Brighton studios as opposed to being at Gillette because of the risk of the Hillman jinx.
00:08You win a game like that, Curtis, and we now cannot go back to Gillette the rest of the season.
00:16I'm superstitious when it comes to the jinx.
00:18I'm a little stitious, and I can't tell you. What a great day.
00:22For the first time since 2021, Coach, we have a football team.
00:27We have a legit New England Patriots football team.
00:31Wow. I thought that they would play them tough, but I didn't think they'd win the football game, to be honest.
00:39That was a game last night where they played them tough.
00:43They were in position all game long to make sure that they came away with a victory.
00:48Great job by Mike Vrabel. Great job by that team to be able to go into Buffalo in that environment and win.
00:54And, yeah, I would say that you beat the best team in the NFL.
00:59Well, and you got a kicker who had ice water in his veins last night to win that one.
01:06That thing was good from 70.
01:09And Shyam, your guy, I'm sure you're waiting to take a victory lap on your quarterback, and you deserve it.
01:15You deserve it this morning.
01:16I just, Greg, I just, I was, I have not been this excited about anything in my life for a very long time.
01:25No, it's not.
01:27I picture Drake May like one of my children, and he finally kind of came into his own.
01:32It was like his debutante ball.
01:35He really kind of came out to the people.
01:37Coming out party?
01:37Yeah, he is.
01:39He is a full-grown adult now.
01:41He just went toe-to-toe with Josh Allen.
01:44Yeah.
01:44And a rightful criticism up to this point from Chris Curtis in that he had never led a fourth-quarter comeback or game-winning drive until last night
01:54against the best team in football in their house in one of the only kind of true home field environments there is anymore in the NFL.
02:03He went and did that, and he was spectacular.
02:06He was, got some help from Steph Diggs, who clearly was in it for a revenge game, and I, you know, there's not much, other than the penalties, which you almost lost the game on,
02:21there's not a lot to complain about after that win last night.
02:25And those penalties, Vrabel does not agree with.
02:27Like, he says it every single time anybody asks about the penalties that they face, he does not agree with them.
02:31I got to say, I was most nervous going into the game because I thought the Pats were going to jinx themselves.
02:38The amount of tweets and Instagram posts that they were putting up of Steph Diggs saying, like, this week means different over and over again, and it did, obviously.
02:46He was emotional pre-game, post-game, anytime he had a mic in front of him.
02:49But, um, it was so impressive, and I just ask, moving forward, that whenever Drake May has a great game, that Shime doesn't tweet about his nether region.
02:58Like, I don't need to know about...
02:59Oh, no, I missed that.
03:00What was that?
03:01If it lasts more than 24 hours, call a doctor.
03:03I don't need that coming from you.
03:05The exact tweet was, I believe, I know if it lasts more than four hours, you're supposed to consult a doctor.
03:12Right.
03:12But what happens if it lasts 24 hours, because I think I could cut diamonds?
03:16Okay.
03:17All right.
03:17There you go.
03:19Unfortunately, that was the image in my mind I read about last night.
03:22He was excited.
03:23That's where I was at.
03:23I'm not...
03:24Hey, I just...
03:25I tell the people what I'm thinking.
03:26All right.
03:26And there were several times during that football game where Drake May is rolling out to his right,
03:34and you think he's done and finished, and he finds a way to get the football to somebody.
03:39So, I'm really impressed.
03:43I don't know how you can't be really impressed with him.
03:44No.
03:45That throw he had when he was getting taken down by, like, three guys down the sideline was...
03:51Awesome.
03:52It was...
03:52I don't know.
03:53I still can't believe he actually made the throw.
03:55It was insane.
03:55Are you talking about the one where he stiff-armed the dude?
03:57Yeah, yeah.
03:58And Oliver, whoever it was.
04:00Yeah.
04:00I think when you look at this football team, I think last night will show you that they are
04:07a legitimately, legitimately good football team.
04:11And the only area that I think they're...
04:14I don't want...
04:15It's not a concern, but I think there's questioning is still, just in my opinion, is the run game.
04:22And when I say the run game, them getting the ball to one of their guys, 12, 15...
04:29That guy fumbling.
04:30Well, yeah.
04:31You know, that's still an issue.
04:33And I know Vrabel went back to him and went back to him, you know, especially inside the
04:38goal line and everything.
04:39I get it.
04:40But I'm talking about when you look at, you know, who's going to be the guy that's going
04:45to carry the ball 12 to 15 times a game, you know?
04:49Well, I mean, it's going to have to be Ramondre or Travion, you know?
04:55But neither one...
04:56I mean, you only had...
04:57Ramondre had six rushes and attempts, and same with Travion.
05:01It looked like Gibson was done.
05:02Like, I mean, he had tears.
05:04Yeah, yeah.
05:04He had tears in his eyes, so...
05:07Yeah.
05:08But you had some great plays from Travion Henderson, your guy, last night.
05:15Just not enough, though.
05:16I'd like, you know, you look at every team, and I know the error is different.
05:20There's no longer the guy that's going to get 25, 30 carries a game, but I think there
05:26needs to be a guy that has to get in a little bit of a rhythm, and I'm just hoping that it
05:32will be Travion.
05:33I don't know how much longer Vrabel's leash is with Ramondre.
05:38It seems very long.
05:40Even after the game, when he was asked about it, he says, we're going to figure it out.
05:43We're going to figure it out.
05:44You know, it has to stop happening.
05:46Right.
05:46But, and this is going to be my lead this morning, is Ramondre Stevenson, I think you've
05:50just got to play through the fumbles.
05:52Like, he is so important to this team.
05:54If he sat him for the entire game yesterday, which I think is something like a Bill Belichick
05:59would have done, we'd lose that game.
06:01You think so?
06:02Yes.
06:02You don't think Travion Henderson could score from inside the five-yard line?
06:05I don't know.
06:05But if you just go by what happened...
06:08I feel like it's so replaceable.
06:08Yeah.
06:09I feel like the running back, there are so many guys out there.
06:11They had to have, like, an entire union, like the RAs at MIT or whatever it was, to
06:16get the running back paid more, because their salaries had plummeted.
06:20Like, I just feel like the Ramondre thing is as long as...
06:23He'll keep pumping them up until he gets someone to replace him.
06:25Because as this team is now 3-2 with several winnable games, the fumbles that were bothersome
06:32will become playoff ending.
06:33Right.
06:34If you have him in this...
06:36And he seems like a nice guy.
06:38I don't think he's doing it on purpose.
06:39No.
06:39But last night, I said, okay, that's it.
06:42Like, it's over.
06:43And I get, like, inside the five-yard line, you could probably give it to anybody to score.
06:48And, like, both of us touched on.
06:50So then why didn't they?
06:50I think it's Vrabel doing...
06:53I think it's Vrabel trying not to lose this guy completely.
06:58But I don't look at it and we're going, like, okay, you need Ramondre Stevenson.
07:03I think that you have to find a guy that you go, okay...
07:06And I don't know what it is with Travion Henderson, because maybe they feel like he's not ready.
07:12And that's why they're still giving the leash to Ramondre.
07:15Like, slow playing him a little bit or whatever.
07:17Yeah.
07:17And there was speculation that on the kickoff early...
07:20To start the game, he got dinged.
07:22Okay.
07:23So that's why immediately after the fumble or immediately after Gibson got hurt, they didn't have Travion in there right away.
07:29And then once Ramondre had fumbled again, they said, okay, suck it up, kid.
07:32Let's see if he can get back out there.
07:34But you're right, Curtis, that these fumbles, one of those could lead to something that is you losing in the playoffs.
07:41So, and clearly it's still an issue for him.
07:44And we talked to Vrabel about this last week.
07:47Like, then when you see him running inside the five-yard line, he's got literally two hands on the football, and he's holding on to the thing like it's, you know, like his life depended on it.
07:56Yeah.
07:57And that takes away from you as a runner.
08:00Inside the five, okay, you can get away with it.
08:02But, you know, between the 20s, you got to still be a runner.
08:06Yeah.
08:06And he had both hands on the ball, and then he put his hand out to brace for the fall, and that's when the guy punched it out.
08:11Yeah, so that would be the only thing that I would be like, all right, there's a little bit of a concern for me moving forward, is when are they going to say, okay, here's our bell cow back that we're going to go with, and then the other guy's going to give him some breaks when he needs it.
08:28Well, it is a Patriots Monday after a win and a big win at that over the Buffalo Bills, who went into that game five undefeated, only undefeated team left in the NFL last night going into that game, and they do not remain that way.
08:45And so Patriots move to three and two, and you can talk about that all day long here on Boston Sports Original, WEEI.
08:54We will talk about that with Boomer Esiason coming up at eight this morning, and then we will talk about that with Mike Vrabel, who will join us at about 9.20 or 9.30 since they arrived back here at three or whenever they got back here early this morning.
09:14So, Curtis, what is wrong with these people?
09:18Here's a 508 text that says, funny how you make it look like it was the show's decision not to be at Gillette today.
09:26Yes, I mean, I'll put it on myself.
09:29There's no conspiracy here.
09:30I wanted to get an extra half an hour of sleep.
09:33When we leave for Gillette, we leave at 4 a.m.
09:36When we come in here early on a Patriots Monday and Mike Vrabel's not going to be on the show until 9.30, we get an extra half an hour of sleep.
09:45What are they trying to say?
09:45The Pats said, don't come.
09:46Yes, they were trying to say the New England Patriots said, don't come.
09:49Oh, okay.
09:51It's 6.13 on a Monday.
09:52The Pats just got their best win in three years, and you think there's some, like, 9.11 truther to the morning show not being at Gillette Stadium.
09:59You think out of all the weeks, the Pats would be like, don't come this week.
10:02Right, please.
10:03Stacey said stay for a week.
10:04We'd love to talk.
10:07I love the night games like this here.
10:09I mean, and then all we got to do is come in the studio.
10:11Hell, friend of the show, Robert Spillane, popped off.
10:14We can have him on for a second time in, like, four days.
10:16Yeah, correct.
10:18I hope there's something moving forward.
10:20Wiggy defense, you got to be really happy with that defense last night.
10:23Yeah, I thought, you know, obviously Josh Allen is spectacular.
10:27He made plays.
10:28He's going to make plays.
10:29But you were able to kind of keep them in a position where the plays that he made weren't, like, back-breaking plays that ultimately changed the game.
10:40I know he was able to put their team in a position where he could be able to drive down the field.
10:45And, you know, they were able to tie the game up.
10:47But great job by that defense.
10:48Can I also say props to Booty?
10:50Because I thought we were going to get another Pop Douglas moment where it was, like, third down and one.
10:56And he wasn't going to get it.
10:57And he extended with his arm out, which made me a bit nervous that it wasn't going to cross over or someone was going to punch it out.
11:02But that was impressive as well.
11:04The biggest play.
11:05What did he have?
11:05I think he had, like, 25 yards for the Bills on penalties.
11:09So, yes.
11:10But he made the biggest.
11:11But, like, okay, we're going to be positive for a second.
11:13That was impressive.
11:14He made one of the biggest plays.
11:15So, I would say Drake made one of the biggest plays in that game.
11:18And Shyamal loved the All-22.
11:20That stone hole shot.
11:21The honey hole shot against the cover two.
11:25And the way that I send.
11:26I need a poncho in here.
11:28The way that you have to drive the football on that specific throw.
11:31Because if you are going to throw a go route versus two, it has to be what we call a honey hole.
11:37It has to be put on a rope.
11:38And that was a great throw by him, which ultimately led them into a great position.
11:42Booty did such a good job of sitting in the zone.
11:45Yeah.
11:45Sitting in the gap in the zone.
11:46And then staying in bounds, too.
11:48So, the clock continued to run.
11:50Like, that could not have been a better plan.
11:51Wait.
11:52So, you call Booty honey hole?
11:54Yeah.
11:54He sat in the honey hole.
11:55Jeez.
11:56Also, Greg, I think it's very important that a certain play caller gets his due this morning.
12:02You know, I've been very critical of play calling here on this very program.
12:06Zach Corr dialed up an amazing game on the defensive side of the ball yesterday.
12:10He was in his bag.
12:14I don't know what that guy's on, but whatever it is, keep it going.
12:18Because that was awesome.
12:20He cooked up so many great ways to contain Josh Allen.
12:24The pressure that he brought at just random times, the Carlton Davis, like, slot corner blitz,
12:30when Josh Allen had no clue it was coming, was uber impressive.
12:34As long as we're talking to you, can I just confirm something?
12:39Did I hear the following phrase uttered on this radio station yesterday from your mouth?
12:48Suck it, Nate Burleson.
12:49Yeah.
12:50Please God, no.
12:51Yeah.
12:52Well, yeah.
12:52After the London game, I knew at the very worst I was pushing with my guy Nate Burleson.
12:56And then, it's a good week for the geek if I'm pushing with an NFL player.
13:00Chime.
13:01Suck it?
13:02Come on.
13:03Yes, that's that.
13:04Nate Burleson's the best.
13:06Big wrestling fan right there.
13:07I thought I heard it said that last time.
13:08That's the way it went.
13:09The DX job.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Can you imagine if Nate Burleson saw who said, suck it, to him?
13:14Like, if he saw just, like, a photo of Sean sitting here, and it's furry.
13:18He gets the DX.
13:19Yeah.
13:20This is Fred from Rhode Island.
13:24Morning, Fred.
13:24Hey, good morning, Greg.
13:27Good morning, everybody.
13:28How are you?
13:28What's up?
13:30Not much.
13:30So, you know, every game, you know, I watched the game last night, as you guys did.
13:35And there was a series where Buffalo had the ball, and the quarterback must have ran two
13:43or three times for 10, 12, 13 yards.
13:46He dropped back, and the seam was open, and he just ran right up the middle.
13:50So, I think the emotionally pivoting play for the Patriots last night, which I thought was
13:57amazing, was I think it was near the end of the half, where Drake May ran right up the
14:04middle of the field and didn't slide, and he went head first.
14:08He got hit from the right, spun around, hit from the left, and he bounced right back up.
14:13And I think from that point on, I think the team just picked up their play from that point
14:18on in the game.
14:19Well, it's...
14:20I mean, I really think he's coming into his own.
14:23Yeah.
14:23It's an impressive win, and it's a, you know, call it what you want.
14:28Call it a statement game for Drake May.
14:30Call it whatever you want to call it.
14:32I mean, your first consecutive wins in three years, your biggest win since the win over
14:37the Bills that Scheim had to watch Mack come down the field and throw the touchdown pass
14:42to Gusecki.
14:43But even, like, that win, like, it was big because you beat the Bills, but it had no
14:47impact on the season because the team was so bad.
14:49Right.
14:49There haven't been any real good wins, so that's, like, the best win since something
14:53like that.
14:54But what the bigger thing is last night is that it was all something they could replicate.
14:58Like, they didn't have a game where it's like, okay, Drake May pulled some plays out
15:03of his ass.
15:04They had a gadget play, you know, sort of like how Clemson took care of UNC.
15:08But it was a day where it was their offense.
15:12It was their defense.
15:13We all knew Steph Diggs was going to play, no matter what he said about being every other
15:17week, just sort of a normal week.
15:18It clearly was not.
15:19And Drake May has been spectacular, historic over the last four starts.
15:24He's done something that only he and Tom Brady in the history of the sport have done,
15:27which is, like, 70-plus completion percentage, no interceptions, and 12 touchdowns.
15:32And it wasn't like a game that people go, oh, Buffalo lost that game.
15:35No, this was a game where New England beat Buffalo, right?
15:38New England went up there, and they just beat them.
15:40Yeah, I mean, you both stunk the first half out, offense-wise.
15:45Yeah.
15:45Josh Allen did throw the interception, which was, that was huge.
15:49That was a great play by the defense.
15:51Marcus Jones.
15:51Yes, it was.
15:52It was a great play by the defense, so, yeah.
15:55I mean, you know, Buffalo didn't play the game that you expected them to play.
16:01Right, but Buffalo, see, it's like, you beat Buffalo, and what has Buffalo shown you through
16:10the, what was it, first, you know, three, four weeks of the season where you go, like,
16:15oh, that wasn't the Buffalo that played in week one or played in week two.
16:20So, I mean, I, you know, they, they, they come back and win those games.
16:24They came back and won the Ravens game earlier in the season, you know, so they, yeah, I, I,
16:29I'm not, listen, I hate the week-to-week, it's like last week when everybody's like,
16:34great, big, big deal, you beat up on the Panthers.
16:36I, somebody was, started off the show with a text about, uh, you guys are going to glaze
16:41the Patriots all morning long after a random regular season win against the Buffalo Bulls.
16:46A random regular season win?
16:48Yes, so there's always those people out there, Wiggy, but that's how.
16:51I look at this game, and I look at the, I, I look, I watch, you know, the NFL every Sunday,
16:57and I watch all these teams, and I look at the Patriots, and I go, like, like Curtis said,
17:01this is something that they can easily, easily replicate.
17:04If they can play like this, week in and week out, they can not only make the playoffs,
17:10but they can win the division, and the other thing is, I don't know if they're going to
17:14win the division or not.
17:15Well, they have, they only have one more division road game left, and that's at the Jets,
17:19and they'll win that.
17:20They have an easy schedule, and I absolutely think it's in play.
17:25Yeah, and they already did the hottest part, which is beating Buffalo in Buffalo.
17:29Right.
17:30So, 2-0 in the division.
17:31That win last night was like a three-game swing in the division.
17:35You lose, you're down three and a half games to the Bills.
17:37You win, you're basically down a half a game, because right now you own the tiebreaker.
17:41Like, that's, that's how close it is now.
17:44And Drake May didn't play out of this world.
17:47Like, Drake May played, like, he could play like that every single week.
17:51So, it's not one of those games where you go, all right, you were able to beat Buffalo,
17:56but Drake May had this unbelievable game where he threw four touchdowns, and like,
18:00is that something he's going to do week in and week out?
18:02What you saw from, by Drake May last night, is something that you could see him doing that
18:08every single week.
18:08Yeah, okay, well.
18:10Okay, well.
18:10Yeah.
18:10Okay, well.
