00:00Have you ever wondered why we carve pumpkins and wear costumes on Halloween?

00:07The answer goes back thousands of years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

00:14The Celts believed that on the night of October 31st,

00:18the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead was at its thinnest.

00:24This was a time when spirits could cross over into our world.

00:29To welcome friendly spirits of their ancestors.

00:33They would light huge bonfires and leave out offerings of food.

00:39But what about the malevolent spirit?

00:41To ward them off, people would wear costumes and masks made from animal skins,

00:48hoping to blend in and go unnoticed.

00:52They also carved frightening faces into turnips and gores.

00:56The original jack-o'-lanterns, to scare away any wandering ghouls.

01:03So, the next time you put on your costume,

01:06remember you're taking part in an ancient ritual.

01:10A tradition that has survived for centuries.
