00:00A group of Britain's top amateur fashion designers are competing for a life-changing opportunity.
00:07An exclusive mentorship at high street giant Marks & Spencer.
00:12I'm on it today man.
00:14This week it's the semi-final.
00:17She's back in womenswear, thank God.
00:19And the designers have one last chance ahead of the grand final to impress the M&S experts.
00:25It's quite a crowded industry.
00:27A lot of people graduating every year, there aren't always the jobs for them at that time.
00:32So this mentorship with M&S is a great opportunity for that designer to really step forward in their career.
00:38They will also need to win over this week's guest expert, supermodel Lily Cole.
00:43I'm really impressed that you do this in four hours and how complicated in a way they are.
00:48Five hopefuls remain.
00:49I'm stressed.
00:50But only one can claim a mentorship.
00:52I think you've just got to take these risks.
00:54That will help fulfill their dreams.
00:56I really want to reach the final.
00:58So let's hope the judges like it.
00:59Quite ambitious.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Moment of truth.
01:02To dress the nation.
01:04Last chance to make it through to the final.
01:14Hiya!
01:15Well, look who it is.
01:16Our top five designers.
01:18You've put in the hard graft and it's definitely paired off because you, my friends, are in the semi-final.
01:26Come on!
01:27Yes!
01:28And it came back!
01:29Woof woof!
01:30By the end of this week, we will have our dressing nation finalists.
01:35Ha!
01:36Ha!
01:37It is crazy to be so close to the final.
01:40I'm really in shock that I'm here and getting through to the final would really give me that boost of confidence that I need.
01:46You're that much closer to taking your design career to the next level with the help of Britain's best loved fashion retailer and possibly having at least one of your designs sold in store.
01:59I just really wanted to make the people that are behind me proud.
02:02And winning the mentorship with M&S would absolutely change my career.
02:06From my tiny little studio space in my house to a global reach.
02:11That's the dream.
02:12Now, I know what you're all thinking.
02:14Where does AJ get her innate sense of style from?
02:18Ha!
02:19Well, let me tell you.
02:20It's in the dreams.
02:21Ha!
02:22Ha!
02:23Funny you should say that!
02:24Because this week, it's Denim week!
02:26Ha!
02:27Can I get it?
02:28Yee-haw!
02:29Yee-haw!
02:30Yee-haw!
02:31Oh my gosh!
02:32We better get the experts in before Vernon goes full cowboy.
02:36So, here to rip you and Vernon into shape is someone who's helped evolve one of the most important categories at M&S.
02:45It's Head of Women's Wear Design.
02:47Lisa Elise!
02:48Yay!
02:52And our special guests, from supermodel and actress to film director, author and activist,
02:58it's the iconic Lily Cole!
03:00Yay!
03:01As a supermodel, Lily Cole has worked with some of the most celebrated fashion houses in the world.
03:07From Jean Paul Gaultier to Alexander McQueen and Chanel, as well as being a muse to Vivian Westwood.
03:14Welcome!
03:15Thank you!
03:16Thank you!
03:17Hi!
03:18Please, can you reveal this week's statement piece challenge?
03:21Of course!
03:22It's the most important piece of my wardrobe.
03:24For this week's challenge, you are asked to design a pair of women's denim jeans.
03:29And jeans have been a bit of an iconic statement, but equally they're a wardrobe staple.
03:34So, it'll be really interesting to see how they're translated into a versatile piece,
03:40but equally something that is fashion-forward.
03:43Now, it's not just denim week.
03:45It's also the semi-final.
03:48So, the designer in last place at the end of this statement piece challenge will sadly be going home.
03:56We're wishing you the very best of luck.
03:59You have four hours to create a pair of women's denim jeans.
04:04I'm a size 10, by the way.
04:06Me too!
04:07Extra long leg.
04:09Your time starts...
04:11No!
04:12Good luck everyone!
04:13Off you go!
04:14The designers have four hours to create a pair of women's denim jeans that feel innovative,
04:19but still have commercial appeal.
04:21The lowest placing designer at the end of this challenge will be going home.
04:26Atmosphere's so different.
04:28Yeah, atmosphere is so different.
04:30God!
04:31I feel really proud to have made it to semis, but I'm just putting that to one side,
04:37and I'm going to do the best I can do with everything that I've learned,
04:40and hopefully get through to the final.
04:42Today's all about a twist on a classic.
04:44Lisa, why are they doing a jeans challenge first in the semi-final?
04:48Jeans are really important for us.
04:50We've got a vast range.
04:51I think we sell something like 10 pairs every minute.
04:54My God, there's a lot of denim in here.
04:55Look at the amount of denim.
04:56This is denim on denim.
04:58I need something dark.
05:00They're all different leg shapes, different washes.
05:03They've got skinnies, straights, barrels, carrots.
05:06We've got turnips too.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Oh, they've got stretch as well.
05:12The appeal of wearing jeans is that they feel sturdy and they feel comfy.
05:16It's all right.
05:17It's very stretchy though.
05:18It's nice, but no stretch.
05:20It's the semi-final.
05:21Is it a case of go big or go home today?
05:23I think certainly.
05:25We're looking for something that's a different fit,
05:27more fashion-forward, where their personality meets commerciality.
05:31Got it.
05:32Not too edgy, but new and different.
05:34The designers have to rise to the challenge.
05:36Everyone's on it.
05:37Like, people really want to just get their stuff done.
05:40Come on.
05:41Semi-final, we're ready to go.
05:43The pressure has been building.
05:44At this stage, no-one wants to go home.
05:46Having come second in the Statement Peace Challenge last week,
05:49menswear specialist Richie is hoping to better that
05:53and has his eyes firmly set on getting to the final.
05:56Just inspired by the golden era of Hollywood.
05:59I love prominent figures like Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Dietrich.
06:02They were kind of breaking the mould back then,
06:04and I wanted to bring that classic style to denim.
06:07Rich's Hollywood-inspired design is giving a feminine twist
06:10to classic tailoring, combining lightweight denim and pleated seams
06:14to create a sharp denim trouser.
06:17Yeah, lovely pleating there.
06:18It's a relaxed flow as I'm after.
06:20I feel good, I feel confident.
06:22I'm just in my zone.
06:23But given the criticism his women's designs have received previously...
06:27A lot of his denim ring has felt quite menswear, quite boxy,
06:31less of a fitted silhouette.
06:32For me, if you took away the cheque and put the bow on,
06:34I think I'd have liked it a lot more.
06:36The femininity, that for me, is what's lacking.
06:39Can Richie prove lessons have been learned
06:42with his latest womenswear design?
06:44Get all of it done. All of it is done.
06:46I've learned a lot about women's shapes.
06:48I really want to get that in there.
06:50It's always best to be learning, always.
06:52The minute you stop learning, you're done.
06:56She's bringing her leg in today, guys.
06:58Oh, God, girl.
06:59Thank God men's week's over.
07:03Last week, Alex received her first setback of the competition
07:07when her designs were criticised for being Sammy.
07:11She needs to elevate herself in this competition.
07:13I can't just be a one-trick pony.
07:15Where's the asymmetry in this one?
07:17Oh, yeah.
07:18So this week, she's going all out
07:20to make sure she can claim a place in next week's final.
07:23Last week was the worst week, actually.
07:25So I'm just taking the positives, learning from the criticism,
07:28and I want to show I have the potential to win this.
07:32In order to impress, she's pushing the boundaries
07:35with this fiercely feminine, empowering jean,
07:38incorporating corsetry and concealed leg zip
07:41to bring a unique flavour to her design.
07:43Quite inspired by corsets, I saw.
07:45Yeah, I think for me it was important
07:47to have the kind of silhouettes of a corset,
07:49but without that kind of restrictiveness.
07:51I didn't want it to feel too tight,
07:53so I've used a stretch denim instead.
07:55I think there's a million and one masculine-looking jeans,
07:58but very few really feminine-looking jeans.
08:00Girl power in the house.
08:02That's what we need, isn't it?
08:03I'm going to leave you to spice up your life.
08:05I'm here all day.
08:07Alex's designer, she's got a concealed opening
08:09down the front of each leg,
08:10which I think is quite a nice feature.
08:12Could you see it being in your collections?
08:14I think I could, actually.
08:15Depending on what it looks like at the end.
08:16Yeah, of course.
08:17I've never made a full pair of jeans.
08:19Tell me about it.
08:20I think Laura's going to blow it out of the bag.
08:22Three weeks of practice on trousers.
08:23Easy.
08:24Number one, Laura.
08:25I don't normally wear a lot of jeans.
08:26I wear dresses,
08:27but I do like a 70s silhouette in the autumn
08:30with a jumper and a pair of boots.
08:32My style's definitely feminine, floral, vintage,
08:35but more 70s vintage.
08:36I quite like the 1970s colours and style.
08:39I've actually got a photograph of my mum and my auntie
08:42from the 70s in this kind of dress.
08:43I don't normally wear a lot of jeans.
08:45I wear dresses,
08:46but I do like a 70s silhouette in the autumn
08:48with a jumper and a pair of boots.
08:50My style's definitely feminine, floral, vintage,
08:53but more 70s vintage.
08:55I quite like the 1970s colours and style.
08:57I've actually got a photograph of my mum and my auntie
09:00from the 70s in this kind of dark denim,
09:03flared silhouette,
09:04so that was my inspiration.
09:07Having made trousers in the last two collection challenges,
09:10Laura's in her element
09:12and has lent on her love of the 70s in her design
09:15with iconic front pockets and flared legs,
09:17but with so many nods to the past,
09:19is it the kind of fashion-forward jean
09:21the experts are looking for?
09:23Laura, trousers again.
09:25You come on a TV show like Dress the Nation,
09:27all you've made is pants.
09:28Yeah.
09:29That's what it feels like for you.
09:30Yeah.
09:31Like that.
09:32So it's got quite a retro feel to it.
09:33Yeah, definitely.
09:34I always like quite feminine retro styles when I'm designing.
09:37Yeah.
09:38And that little patch pocket is quite a 70s vibe as well, isn't it?
09:41Yeah.
09:42All right, well, good look.
09:44Who knows?
09:45If you make it to the fan,
09:46you will actually make, like, a dress.
09:47A dress.
09:48That would be nice.
09:49That would be nice.
09:50Yeah, it would be nice.
09:51It's not necessarily original.
09:52It feels more familiar like I've seen it before.
09:54Yeah.
09:55Yeah.
09:56Yeah.
09:57Would you wear it?
09:58Um, I don't think I'd wear it, if I'm honest.
10:00When you line them all up and think about which is the one
10:03that's going to go into our range for an M&S customer,
10:06is that the one that's going to shout out,
10:08I'm the newest gene in the world?
10:13Yeah, yeah, thank you.
10:14I think you look amazing as well, you know.
10:16But let's see what Vernon thinks.
10:17Where is it?
10:18Me?
10:19Vernon!
10:20Who wore it best?
10:24Designers, you are halfway through.
10:27Hey!
10:32I'm just trying to stay composed.
10:34Like, lots to do, lots to do.
10:37Following on from his success in men's wear week,
10:40Cam Bailey sprinkle his minimalist magic on denim.
10:43Yeah, last week, a little double win.
10:46Um, but I'm staying humble.
10:47I'm not getting ahead of myself at all.
10:50I am doing...
10:52It's a jean, but it's more of, like,
10:54I like to call it a denim trouser.
10:56I've taken off some of the traditional parts of jeans,
10:58so, like, the coin pocket, rivets, like, I've scrapped that,
11:02and, like, this is me, like, reimagining the jeans.
11:05Taking inspiration from suit trousers,
11:08Bailey's straight-legged pleated design
11:10is casting aside tradition
11:12in an attempt to reinvent a classic.
11:14But will his finished piece have enough jean-like qualities
11:17to satisfy the experts?
11:19It's quite interesting that you've scrapped quite a few of those things
11:23that people...
11:24Iconic elements of a jean.
11:26Yeah.
11:27But you're using denim fabric.
11:29Yeah.
11:30What are the things that will identify it as a jean
11:32apart from the fabric?
11:33Um, well, I'll still put some traditional belt loops.
11:36Like, I've got my back patch pocket, things like that.
11:38Okay.
11:39Now you're talking to me,
11:40I'm tempted to do maybe, like, a contrast top stitch.
11:44Right.
11:45Because, at the moment, I'm just doing the same colour.
11:48I'm gonna be honest with you, all right?
11:50I nodded like I actually knew what that meant.
11:53And I apologise.
11:54So it's literally just a different coloured thread
11:56that you'll see visibly on the top of the fabric.
11:59Can't you just say I'm going to do it in a different colour?
12:01I actually really love the design.
12:05Ooh.
12:06It's super, I don't know, cool.
12:08Yeah.
12:09And unusual and interesting, but in a subtle way.
12:11He hasn't really taken any due cues.
12:15It's a very trouser approach.
12:18He is talking about top stitching, I think.
12:20Quite a nice little touch.
12:26I forgot how to do a fly.
12:28Oh!
12:29What is women's right or left?
12:31Oh, I'm literally wearing a pair.
12:32What?
12:33I don't want to, like, look, but...
12:35No, mine's must be...
12:36Mine's men's.
12:37Wait, open your...
12:39Mine's left over right.
12:41I must be wearing this.
12:44Yeah, that's men's.
12:46I didn't know that, but that's fine.
12:52I'm going for a really unusual, baggy silhouette.
12:55I've never seen a style like it before,
12:57so it is something maybe a little bit new, boundary pushing,
13:01but still quite flattering for a female as well.
13:04Casey is creating a stylish yet comfortable cuffed jean,
13:08which, inspired by her native Scotland,
13:10will also feature a unique kilt overlay.
13:14I like to put a bit of a twist on my designs.
13:16That's what makes me a designer, and that's what I find really exciting.
13:20I like to kind of surprise people.
13:23But with the design needing to have commercial appeal,
13:26will her kilt element prove to be a step too far for M&S?
13:31Is that half a kilt?
13:32Yes.
13:33Yes.
13:35But I know that, like, a lot of young people now
13:36would layer something like that over jeans.
13:40And is it detachable?
13:41Yes, detachable.
13:42So you've got a choice of whether to wear it or not.
13:43So it would just be attached by buttons,
13:44so if you wanted to, you could just take it off
13:46and you would just have the buttons on the waistband.
13:48Lovely.
13:49I don't know if I'm being too ambitious again,
13:52but I just think it's at a tough point in the competition now,
13:56so I think you've just got to take these risks.
13:59Casey's design is quite unexpected and original.
14:02No, it's very playful, yeah.
14:04It's super intriguing, but it's quite ambitious.
14:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:07Especially in the time frame.
14:08I'm very curious to see how it looks.
14:10It's a lot of pressure, but just going to get on.
14:13Designers, you've got one hour left.
14:16I'm scared my jeans are really safe.
14:18But that is what people like in a jean.
14:20People like something really wearable.
14:23High scale mine is too different.
14:26They're quite high-waisted, but I might change that.
14:29I think even lower than that, maybe.
14:31Do you?
14:32I don't know.
14:33But then at that point, is it corsetry
14:34or is it just a high-waisted jean?
14:36I think sometimes I can question
14:38whether I'm going too far creatively
14:40and not being commercial enough.
14:43It's just, I don't want to go crazy
14:45with the actual silhouette and people be like,
14:47I would not buy that.
14:48I don't even know at this point.
14:50Oh, God.
14:53Tense times.
15:03Welcome back to Dress The Nation,
15:05where the designers have less than one hour left
15:07in their statement piece challenge,
15:09creating next-generation styles for women's denim jeans.
15:13Head is well and truly gone.
15:16Yeah.
15:17With one designer leaving the competition
15:18at the end of his challenge,
15:20the usually unflappable Alex
15:22is questioning the commerciality
15:24of her original design.
15:26She's decided to simplify her jeans
15:28by lobbing the corseted waist
15:30and losing the statement leg zips.
15:32But will these changes alter how her piece is received?
15:35The corset thing's quite important at the moment
15:38in women's wear, isn't it?
15:39Yeah.
15:40And it was going to be really exciting
15:41how that came together.
15:42I know.
15:43But I don't want it to feel uncomfortable.
15:45This height feels like a good middle ground.
15:48I don't know.
15:49I don't know how I feel about these.
15:51What about these side zips that open
15:53so it can be bell-bottom?
15:54It's too much.
15:55You've got to trust in your instinct now.
15:57The front zip bit, I think it's better without it.
15:59I think it would have just over-complicated it.
16:02I feel like the idea was great.
16:05This has been, like, so intense today.
16:11Should have been cutting on the machine,
16:12but hey-ho.
16:14Hiya, love.
16:15How are you?
16:16Are you all right?
16:17I'm well.
16:18Look at these scissors.
16:19Yeah.
16:20Oh, my gosh.
16:21Proper shears they are.
16:22You open in a hospital with these?
16:23Yeah, they're my tailoring shears.
16:24It allows me to get through fabric really quick as well,
16:26so, yeah.
16:27Are they a pair of jeans?
16:28Yeah, some ladies jeans.
16:29Some ladies jeans.
16:30Ooh.
16:31Trying to, you know, get the stuff done.
16:32I like them.
16:33Beautiful.
16:34Hey.
16:35Beautiful.
16:36So, I'm making some side adjusters.
16:37I didn't get a chance to do the bow in my first challenge.
16:40I'm seeing if I could do that in the side adjusters instead.
16:42Add a little feminine edge.
16:44That's it.
16:45You could be in the final next week.
16:46I want to be in the final.
16:47All right, Richie.
16:48Thank you very much.
16:49Good luck.
16:51Richie.
16:52I really loved his.
16:53Very structured it looks like.
16:54Yeah.
16:55Very precise lines.
16:56I feel like it's quite unusual with denim.
16:57That it has like a kind of suit feeling almost.
16:59Yeah.
17:00And I think you can see his approach to women's wear.
17:02Yeah.
17:03I feel good.
17:04I feel confident.
17:05I've got stunning side adjusters which turn into like a little bit of a bow.
17:08I've got real functioning pockets.
17:09My button hole is actually going to be there to secure the pleat.
17:13Which is very unusual.
17:14I've actually got a pleat running through with a jetted pocket slicing through the pleat.
17:19So, it's definitely fashion forward.
17:21Designers!
17:22You have 30 minutes.
17:24What?
17:25That's ridiculous.
17:27I'm stressed.
17:28There's no room for error.
17:31Wish I had a little bit more time but it'll be fine.
17:36Throughout the competition, Casey struggled to complete her ambitious designs.
17:41I'm just going to have to pin it because I have completely run out of time.
17:45Oh, God.
17:46I'm not going to have time.
17:47It's frustrating that I ran out of time and I would have liked to have finished it properly.
17:52It will be a massive shame if time is what messes this up for you.
17:56And with 20 minutes to go, she's made a bold decision.
18:00Since I keep running out of time, it's probably safer that I just don't attempt the kilt.
18:05I have compromised a little bit with my design to like maybe make it more achievable.
18:11Change of plan then.
18:13Save time.
18:15What are the jeans like without the kilt then?
18:17What's the kind of design?
18:18So they are a bit of an unusual hem.
18:23The top's quite simple, obviously.
18:25Yeah, the top's quite simple.
18:27Just very basic pockets on the back.
18:29Yes.
18:31Okay.
18:32I want to see that kilt on my jeans.
18:34Oh, no pressure.
18:35Go, go, go.
18:36Thanks.
18:37Good luck.
18:38I'm going to just stick to my gut instinct.
18:41So I'm just going to go add the kilt.
18:43It's just best to go for it, yeah.
18:45Ten minutes to go, designers.
18:47Ten minute kilt.
18:48Never been done before.
18:50Fingers crossed they fit.
18:52Moment of truth.
18:53Oh, my God, I got the length spot on.
18:56Come on.
18:57Oh, my God.
18:58I feel the most nervous now because looking around, other people have been more creative than just a pair of jeans.
19:07There's me little belt gone.
19:08Oh.
19:09At this point, I feel like I've gone so simple.
19:12This could go anyway for anyone.
19:13Happy with them, actually.
19:14Dead happy.
19:15Almost there.
19:16How long have we got?
19:17You've got five minutes left.
19:18What are we doing?
19:19Tying knees as well.
19:20Just to give it that.
19:21Since, yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:22Waste.
19:23Bailey, you're finished.
19:24Could you help me lift the mannequin, please?
19:25I just need to get them on.
19:26Ah!
19:27The button won't go through.
19:28Five.
19:29Four.
19:30Three.
19:31Two.
19:32One.
19:33Time is up.
19:34Step up.
19:35Five minutes left.
19:36Five minutes left.
19:37What are we doing?
19:38Tying knees as well?
19:39Just to give it that.
19:40Since, yeah, yeah, yeah.
19:41Waste.
19:42Bailey, you're finished.
19:43Could you help me lift the mannequin, please?
19:44I just need to get them on.
19:45Ah!
19:46Ah, the button won't go through.
19:47Five.
19:48Four.
19:49Three.
19:50I haven't done that.
19:51Two.
19:52One.
19:53Ah!
19:54Time is up.
19:55Step away from your mannequin.
19:58Yeah, well done.
19:59That was good counting harmony.
20:01Yeah.
20:02Learned that in primary school.
20:03You see other people working on things you might deem more risky.
20:07I maybe played it a little safe.
20:11Oi.
20:12Yeah, I wish I could have done the second button at the top.
20:15But it's all right.
20:16I like it.
20:17It's what I designed.
20:18It's what I wanted.
20:19I want to rank high.
20:20That's it.
20:21I really like them.
20:22They're a bit baggier than I expected, but I am really happy that I've managed to finish
20:25it in time and managed to get the kilt on.
20:27OK.
20:28So gorgeous.
20:29I've played it safe.
20:30I didn't push myself to design anything that was too out there.
20:34Yeah, yours are nicer than mine.
20:36No, yours are nice.
20:37I really want to reach the final now.
20:39I don't want to go home.
20:41With five pairs of women's denim jeans completed and ready for inspection, it's time to find
20:48out which of our designers have hit the brief and whose dream of a mentorship with M&S is
20:54about to come to an end.
20:56I love the tailoring.
20:57I think it's really beautiful how elegant and minimalist in a way the shapes are.
21:06I love the fact that you've put some of the kind of more denim associated things like
21:11the metal buttons, which make it feel a bit like a new generation denim, which has surprised
21:16me.
21:17It was veering towards trousers.
21:19So it's quite a nice kind of hybrid.
21:24I think you've done a great job delivering all of this stitching and top stitching and
21:30the pockets are so regular and beautifully made.
21:32I'm really impressed that you did this in four hours and how kind of complicated in a
21:37way they are.
21:38They're very beautiful.
21:39You had a 70s reference, but you maybe haven't pushed yourself far enough in terms of newness
21:44in the style, probably a bit too familiar in an everyday jean range.
21:48I'm impressed you finished the kilt because we saw you just before you finished and you
21:57hadn't gotten there yet.
21:58I wasn't sure about the shape of it.
22:00It felt interesting but strange.
22:02And then when I see it hanging, I really find it very beautiful.
22:05I think it's a really bold and daring design.
22:08If you're thinking about the balance of commerciality versus really pushing the boundaries, it's
22:12probably on the very extreme side.
22:14It reminds me of Vivienne Westwood and the kind of piratey feel.
22:17Well, if there's anyone to be compared with, I mean, come on.
22:20Viv did all right for herself, didn't she?
22:22I think they're really beautiful.
22:28I think that the lines are very surprising actually.
22:32That's kind of an unusual shape to it.
22:34I like how the fabric kind of falls.
22:36I think the felt was a kind of interesting, innovative detail.
22:39I think they've turned out really well.
22:42They are a little bit more on the trouser side than the jean side.
22:45You actually have put some top stitching on, but you are not really wanting to use any of
22:49those kind of design cues.
22:51I think as fashion evolves, everything's up for challenge really.
22:55So it's good to see how people are kind of deconstructing.
22:59I think it's beautiful.
23:08I was very impressed by all the details and all the structure and the cleanness of it,
23:12but it wasn't such a kind of shaped corset that I imagined it might be from the drawing.
23:16And then also it had the openings in the drawings and the legs.
23:20Do you miss those details, Lily?
23:22I think if I'm honest, I did find them quite impressive in the drawing.
23:25So I would have liked to have seen them.
23:26That corset feature felt very relevant to women's wear currently.
23:31And I just wonder whether you've erred too much on the side of caution
23:35where it could have been something that was both feminine and really new from a design perspective.
23:40I really would like to make the final.
23:43I think it's something I've got too close to not want to make it now.
23:47So, yeah, fingers crossed.
23:50In judging, you never know how it could go.
23:52Obviously, everybody else's design is super solid.
23:55But, yeah, I really want another win. I really want to get in top three.
23:59I'm really loving every minute of it and I've learnt so much
24:02and I'd love to go through to the final and just put 100% into that as well.
24:09All right, designers, it's time to reveal the results.
24:13As you know, one of you will not be progressing to the next challenge.
24:18So good luck to you all.
24:20The winner of the statement piece challenge is...
24:27Bailey!
24:29Well done.
24:32That's my third win in a row.
24:34I don't even know what to say.
24:36Well done.
24:37I stuck to my design and stayed true to myself.
24:39I'm elated. I'm so happy.
24:41I'm not in the final just yet.
24:43There's still some work to do.
24:46But it's close. It's definitely close.
24:50With Bailey winning the statement piece challenge, it's time to find out the rest of the rankings.
24:55And which designer's dream ends here?
24:59The designer in second place is...
25:05...Ritchie!
25:06APPLAUSE
25:08The designer in third place is...
25:12...Casey!
25:16APPLAUSE
25:18So, Alex and Laura, one of you will be in with a chance of making it to the final.
25:30The other will sadly be heading home.
25:34The designer in last place and leaving the competition is...
25:39...Laura.
25:44Sorry, Laura.
25:49Sorry, Laura.
25:54Oh, my God.
26:00Laura, you did exceptionally well to get to the semi-final. Don't be upset.
26:04I think you've done really well through this whole process.
26:08On balance, the design was true to yourself and it really showed your personality.
26:13And ultimately, we wanted something that would push the boundaries a little bit more.
26:17Laura, I know it's emotional, but you've got so much to be proud of.
26:21Are you okay?
26:22Yeah, I don't want to leave. It's what?
26:24Aww.
26:25Well, we don't want you to leave.
26:26But sadly, we have to say goodbye.
26:28Honestly, you've been amazing.
26:30I really hope you go from strength to strength.
26:33It was efficient!
26:35Oh, thank you!
26:37Well done, you've been amazing.
26:39Chin up. Chin up.
26:40Well done, Laura. You've been brilliant.
26:41Oh, I'm really sad, but I'm proud of myself.
26:46I've learned to push myself out of my comfort zone to add a little bit more interest to things that I'm designing and that it is okay.
26:56I still have my personal style there as well.
26:58Coming up on Dress the Nation, the cracks start to show.
27:03Oh, my God.
27:04The anxiety is absolutely crazy.
27:07In the last challenge ahead of the final.
27:10The team heading into next week's final is...
27:14Is.
27:15Welcome back to Dress the Nation, where our four remaining designers are just one collection challenge away from a place in the final.
27:31First, winning designer Bailey must decide who's joining his team.
27:36I would like to choose Alex.
27:38We've not done a collection challenge yet together, so I'm excited.
27:41I'm really happy that Bailey picked me.
27:43I think we've both got the potential to do well in this.
27:45Which means, of course, Richard and Casey, you're back together.
27:50But I'm lucky.
27:51I'm really excited to work with Richard again.
27:54We've made a good team the last few times.
27:56I can't wait to just get in there and hopefully secure my place in the final.
28:00Lily, can you reveal this week's final collection challenge?
28:04For the final collection challenge, you are tasked with each team making a denim ensemble.
28:09Think denim on denim, double denim, double it, double double demon.
28:14And you're also tasked with incorporating pre-loved denim into each garment.
28:18And so the fabric room has different pre-loved denim that you can choose from.
28:21Double denim is something of a style statement.
28:24So use your imagination and create two garments that will fly off the rails.
28:29Now don't forget, along with Lily and Lisa, you'll also be getting feedback from the customers.
28:36You've got a total of five hours to complete your denim ensemble collection.
28:41And your time starts now! Good luck!
28:44Go on!
28:48Time to rock and roll.
28:51The winning pair of this final collection challenge will automatically go through to the final.
28:55So everything is on the line.
28:57You want to know that you've done everything you've been doing this.
29:00We need a new twist on double denim. How do they excel in this, please?
29:03I'm curious to see what they create as individuals, but I'm also particularly curious to see how they work together.
29:07And how the two pieces that they make work together and if it becomes a cohesive outfit or not.
29:13I think that's really key.
29:14They've got to really think about the most stylish, modern, trend-led outfit that brings denim, brings jean influence and really makes us turn our heads.
29:24So let's play to our strengths right now. We need to let go of all our chains.
29:29Yeah.
29:30And just be free with this.
29:31We should do frayed edges.
29:32Yeah.
29:33Frayed edge seams.
29:34That's incredible.
29:35Super sleek.
29:36Yeah.
29:37Super high-end.
29:38Team Bailey are going all out and expressing their personal styles with this luxury outfit.
29:43Alex is making a sleeveless jacket, whilst Bailey focuses on a full-length skirt.
29:47They're hitting the pre-loved fabric elements of the brief in the up-cycled denim in the frayed seams.
29:53But will their design be more high-end than high street?
29:56I think two lights are not going to work.
29:58I think we'll just take these three for now.
30:00I'm tempted to just rip these just to see, in case.
30:03OK.
30:04I think like a cocktail dress, emphasising the female form.
30:08You mid-length that a little bit?
30:09Like knee?
30:10Yeah, just do a little...
30:11Oh no, no knees.
30:12No knees.
30:13I know a lot of women wouldn't wear a short dress.
30:15Short dress, yeah.
30:16I got you.
30:17I'm thinking like a poncho-style jacket.
30:18A peplum poncho.
30:19I've never seen it before.
30:20Never seen it.
30:21So it's good.
30:22Peplum poncho.
30:23The names are rolling, man.
30:24Team Richie are taking a more consumer-friendly approach to their design.
30:28Richie is turning his tailoring skills to a peplum poncho, whilst Casey is making a panelled denim dress.
30:34They're doubling down on hitting the pre-loved denim factor of the brief, with the trims on Richie's poncho and the contrast panelling on Casey's skirt.
30:41All made from old jeans.
30:43Denim's an area where we're doing a lot more work on sustainability and recycling.
30:48So we're using off-cuts and waste and doing smaller, more curated ranges.
30:54Customers are getting more interested in sustainability and it's something that we're very, very proud of.
31:00Hey, Lee.
31:03It's gonna work.
31:04No, that's Perth.
31:07Having placed fourth in the statement piece challenge, Alex is going all out and bringing her high-end fashion knowledge to the forefront, in order to make it to the final.
31:16This is so stress-relieving.
31:18Fourth place is the worst place to finish.
31:20In life, you've gotta learn from your mistakes and I've just decided I've gotta unlock the cage, set myself free, got nothing to lose at this point.
31:28You all right, girl?
31:29I'm loving this.
31:30You're such a good stripper.
31:31You're funny.
31:35Alex Bailey, this is it.
31:40Hiya.
31:41One outfit away from the final.
31:42Oh, my gosh.
31:43Alex, what has changed your approach then?
31:45I've got a lot of knowledge of runway and couture and really going for it with silhouette and I just thought I'm not showing enough of that right now.
31:51Great.
31:52I'm just branching out with that shape and really showing what I can make.
31:56Make is something that jumps off the mannequin in store but also making it accessible to everyone.
32:01Yeah.
32:02It's a really, really difficult challenge.
32:04It is and I think the fact that we've got so many customers and we've got to be relevant and democratic makes it an extra challenge.
32:12So, you go all in, Alex.
32:13Literally.
32:14Do you know what I mean?
32:15Yeah.
32:16Good on you.
32:17Do you want these, Vernon?
32:18No.
32:19Oh, yeah, Vernon.
32:20They look like they're ready to work out.
32:21There you go.
32:22Oh, come on.
32:24This is a bit of me.
32:25I am ready.
32:26Oh, my God.
32:27This is a mad distraction.
32:28This is so cool.
32:29I love it.
32:30We'll have to get on.
32:31All right.
32:32Jesus.
32:33I'm going to get on for God's sake.
32:34Get on me way, Vernon.
32:35Designers, you're one hour down.
32:36Score.
32:37Alex, how are you?
32:38Good on him.
32:39Gorgey gorge.
32:40I could actually see you wearing it.
32:42I really could.
32:43Oh, my God.
32:44Oh, my God.
32:45Oh, my God.
32:46Oh, my God.
32:47Oh, my God.
32:48Oh, my God.
32:49Oh, my God.
32:50Oh, my God.
32:51Oh, my God.
32:52Oh, my God.
32:53Oh, my God.
32:54Really could.
32:55Despite having built a strong relationship from working together twice before, Rachel and
33:00Casey have never won a collection challenge, so could today be third time the charm?
33:04You've got to try, innit?
33:06It's a great collaboration.
33:07We know how each other works.
33:08We understand each other's styles.
33:10We're going to smash it.
33:12I'm just cutting panels for my dress.
33:14And then I'm wedging the pre-loved jeans
33:16into the seams as well.
33:19I like that volume.
33:20I like this cross-lap thing going on here.
33:22That's just really unusual.
33:24When the corset's finished, you'll look very neat.
33:26This corset features one of your keys.
33:28It's a staple.
33:29Yeah, a statement.
33:30I really love, like, a cinched waist.
33:32And is it full length?
33:33It's ankle grazing length.
33:34OK, nice.
33:35That's why I'm happy I'm working with Kase.
33:37She understands it.
33:38Yeah.
33:38I said knee length, she went, nah.
33:42Definitely, this challenge is so important.
33:43I think we really need to play on each other's strengths
33:45and really channel what we're both talented in
33:48and really use that to our advantage.
33:50Kase, get your dress ready straight away, yeah?
33:52So, Team Richie and Kasey are using different fabrics,
33:57from what I can see.
33:58I know.
33:59Normally, with double denim, you have the same wash,
34:02whether it's dark or whether it's light.
34:04Especially with an ensemble piece, right?
34:05Because you want the two pieces to match.
34:06Yeah.
34:07I think it's going to look really great together.
34:10And the different coloured fabrics,
34:12it's all just going to look great once it's all finished.
34:14It's definitely something that people would buy.
34:16Yeah.
34:18I don't know.
34:19To get in the final means everything.
34:21It would be absolutely life-changing.
34:22You don't want to be the one to go home,
34:24and I'm not going home.
34:26I'm going to be hearing that machine that Richie's on in my nightmare.
34:28No, Richie, Richie's machine.
34:30It's like why he's at the dentist, isn't it?
34:31It's so intense.
34:33I feel like someone's drilling into my brain or something.
34:36What do you think, Bailey?
34:39Backs together.
34:40Oh, is that the frayed end?
34:41Yeah.
34:42Oh, my God, I'm obsessed.
34:43Bailey is the most incredible team-mate.
34:45We've got similar styles.
34:46High-end fashion for the high street.
34:48Alex.
34:49Gorgeous.
34:50I love it.
34:51I'm really confident in what we're producing.
34:53Just trust and believe.
34:54Mm-hmm.
34:56So, this is Team Bailey going all out on this.
34:59Very structured, it looks like.
35:01Yeah. Very edgy.
35:02Yeah.
35:03There's a lot of fabric right now, but I'm just trying to bring it in.
35:05Yeah.
35:06We always talk about less is more.
35:07Less is more, exactly.
35:08Yeah.
35:09Knowing when to stop as an artist is an interesting question.
35:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:12I've got no panic about it, because it's like...
35:14Don't panic, because we'll all go south if we start panicking.
35:16Yeah.
35:17It's just because the lapel's so big right now.
35:19Designers!
35:20You've got two and a half hours!
35:24Who are you?
35:25LAUGHTER
35:27That's smart.
35:28So, how is it working with Alex?
35:30Because this is the first time that you two
35:32have become one.
35:33I know, I know.
35:34A dream.
35:35We've got such similar design styles,
35:37and we like things that are a little bit edgy.
35:39Are you going to leave the edges fresh?
35:42Yeah.
35:43These are all going to be, like, raw edges left,
35:45but super intentional, so they're trapped in the seams,
35:48so I've, like, panelled all of this.
35:49It's like a really fashionable badger.
35:52Badger.
35:53I mean, all right.
35:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:56We'll go with that.
35:57With the M&S customers playing a big part
35:59in which team will make the final...
36:01I just don't know if they'll like it.
36:02I've not really seen much frayed edging in a high street store.
36:05Have Bailey and Alex designed too much for the catwalk
36:08and not enough for the everyday M&S customer?
36:10What have we done?
36:11I guess we're arses, aren't we?
36:12What have we done?
36:13We've just been ourselves.
36:14Can't have a go at us being ourselves.
36:16You know, is it commercial enough?
36:18That's maybe not the most off-the-rack thing you'd see.
36:20I think we've got to go for what we like now.
36:22No, it's in the back of my mind, though,
36:24like, the customers, the customers, like...
36:26Yeah, but then we're forgetting about putting us in this.
36:28I'm stressed.
36:30You're meant to be team captain. Why are you panicking?
36:32I am panicking.
36:33No, we're not.
36:35It's just a bit of sewing.
36:37Just in what I like.
36:39We're good.
36:41Oh, my God.
36:48Welcome back to Dress the Nation,
36:52where the designers are doubling down on double denim
36:55in a bid to make it to the final.
36:58How are you getting on, UK?
37:00It's going well.
37:01It's just quite complex to construct.
37:03Designers, you've got one hour left.
37:05Only one hour remaining.
37:08With his team design more couture than commercial...
37:11God.
37:12Challenge one winner, Bailey, is feeling the heat.
37:15The anxiety is absolutely crazy.
37:19Chill, help.
37:20If I'm chill, you can chill.
37:22We're asked for team-mate.
37:24Alex!
37:26You seem so calm.
37:28Yeah, you do.
37:29I'm here for it.
37:30I'm making the real standout piece.
37:33It's a piece of me.
37:34And if people are not a fan of it, at least I am.
37:37So I'm standing by this one.
37:38Good for you.
37:40Good for you.
37:45How far do you think you are percentage-wise?
37:47About 50%.
37:48Okay.
37:49Casey struggled with time management in previous challenges.
37:52I think I've been really ambitious in every challenge,
37:55but I've never given up.
37:56I've persevered with everything that I've tried to do.
37:59Richie, could you help me pin it?
38:00Oh, well done.
38:01And with the final in reach, she's determined to overcome that once and for all
38:05and prove that she's worthy of the M&S mentorship.
38:08I graduated last year and I've just been working in retail.
38:11So, yeah, this opportunity would mean so much.
38:13It would really change my life and really kick-start my career.
38:16So this is going to have all my effort in this to hopefully secure a place in the final.
38:23Yeah, that looks really nice.
38:24I'm happy with that, to be honest.
38:25Just smashing it, mate.
38:27Oh, my God.
38:31I feel like they've won this.
38:33Casey and Richie, theirs is super commercial,
38:36and that is the type of thing you would see in M&S,
38:38whereas mine and Alex's is a little bit more out there.
38:40If I'm going to go out, I've made something that is unique,
38:43innovative, reflects me, and that is what I came on here to do.
38:48Alex, she's incredible, but I'm super in my head about what could be one of us going,
38:54and she's like, no, it's fine.
38:56If we are going, we'll leave on a high note.
38:58I think we're just, like, second-guessing.
39:00From this angle, I love her.
39:02Designers, you've only got ten minutes left!
39:05Ten minutes, ten minutes!
39:08Oh, I love that.
39:11They're making a bag.
39:13They're making a bag as well.
39:15Is the belt just, like, trying too hard?
39:18No, the belt's perfect.
39:19I think without the belt, it's a bit formal.
39:22That's jokes.
39:23Your jacket looks so good.
39:25I'll stitch them.
39:26That's it.
39:27Then it's done.
39:28And then I'll turn that through and...
39:29Do you not think you should put the trim on there as well,
39:31to give it more structure?
39:32Do that bottom.
39:36Are you OK?
39:37Yeah.
39:38You've got one minute left, everyone!
39:40Just one minute to go!
39:43Yes!
39:44Right, I'm going to go for it.
39:45Oh, my God, come on.
39:46Oh, it looks so good, Richard.
39:48It looks so nice like that.
39:49Leave it like that.
39:50It's definitely the quickest I've finished so far in the competition.
39:53Quickest.
39:54And probably the happiest I've been as well with the finish that was it.
39:57You've got ten!
39:58Nine!
39:59Eight!
40:00Seven!
40:01Six!
40:02Five!
40:03Four!
40:04Three!
40:05Two!
40:06One!
40:07Time is up, designers.
40:09Step away from your mannequin.
40:10Well done!
40:11Yeah!
40:12I'm happy.
40:13Really happy.
40:14Yeah, we're done, you know.
40:15Well done.
40:16Mixed up the denim.
40:17Done it.
40:18I'm really proud of what I've managed to produce.
40:22My dress was actually quite complex, so it was tough, but it looks amazing, so it was definitely
40:26all worth it.
40:27We couldn't have gone any more us in this.
40:30I really would like to make the final, but I'm just really proud.
40:34We've made a look that is both of us, and we've done our best.
40:38That's all we can do.
40:39I just don't know what the M&S consumer's going to think.
40:42Well, there's only one way to find out.
40:45It's time for the M&S customers to have their say.
40:49Oh my God, guys, this is awful.
40:51Jeez.
40:52My heart is going.
40:53I actually really love it.
40:55I love the style.
40:56I love the detail, and I would definitely wear that.
40:59I love the fraying as well.
41:02I would wear the top bit.
41:03The designs, I think, is beautiful.
41:05I mean, it is a very cool piece.
41:07It's got a very kind of edgy feeling to it.
41:09I just don't think it's that flattering.
41:11You have to have a certain body type to rock it.
41:13They're picking up on how it will feel on them.
41:15Women like to feel flattered and feel confident.
41:18I'm not really sure about the belt.
41:22Okay.
41:23I wasn't either, actually.
41:24I love the skirt, but the belt felt a little bit maybe flimsy.
41:27I mean, it's got pockets.
41:28Who doesn't love pockets?
41:29And even the length, it's just perfect.
41:31Perfect.
41:32I love it.
41:33I'm happy there's a few people that love it.
41:34That's all we wanted from this.
41:35Yeah.
41:36Made up.
41:37I mean, I really like the outfit as a whole.
41:39I think it's a really lovely silhouette.
41:41The denim can be more tonally aligned
41:43because it's quite a dark contrast.
41:45Yeah.
41:46I'm not so crazy about all the different contrasts.
41:49For me, it helps it come together as an outfit.
41:51But I do like on the jacket the detail where they've used the belt loops.
41:55I actually love that it's the dark denim through this panel
41:59because I think that's so flattering on everybody's shape.
42:01I think they like this because it appeals to more shapes and sizes.
42:05And because you've got the stitching in here,
42:07it does look like it's up-cycled.
42:09And the little bag is just so cute.
42:11Fabulous.
42:13I'm really happy with those comments.
42:15The bag's such a shock.
42:16Yeah.
42:18With the customer's feedback taken on board,
42:20the experts now have the difficult task of deciding which team
42:23will win this crucial collection challenge
42:25and automatically go through to next week's final.
42:30Two very different collections.
42:32What do you like about the two?
42:33I thought it was really interesting how wide the designs were,
42:38from the most fashion-forward style that I hadn't expected to see,
42:42made out of denim fabric, to something that maybe felt a bit more familiar.
42:46The piece that I'd probably most likely see myself wearing was maybe Bailey's skirt.
42:52But as an outfit, I felt like Richie and Casey's felt more cohesive as a full outfit together.
42:59Bailey and Alex's were really strong.
43:02Alex's jacket was lovely, the way that the collar was done
43:06and the kind of attention to detail around the points.
43:09And Richie and Casey's, the shape was lovely.
43:12There was real consideration around that femininity.
43:15It was really strong.
43:16Oh, my gosh.
43:17It sounds like you have got a tough decision to make.
43:20It's going to be a hard choice because they're both very strong.
43:23You know, every designer's done an amazing job, you know,
43:25and they should know that regardless.
43:28With the designer's fate sealed,
43:30it's time to find out which pair have won guaranteed places in the final
43:34and who will be going home.
43:36What a week.
43:37Well done, designers.
43:39Another collection challenge in the bag.
43:42But with so little between you all,
43:45it came down to the broad appeal for Marks and Spencer.
43:49We can now reveal that the team with the must-have collection
43:55and heading into next week's final is...
44:10Team Richie!
44:12Team Richie!
44:13Team Richie!
44:14imentation and Professor
44:17It's unbelievable to think that I've made it this far.
44:18You know, there's so many taller designers.
44:21Team Richie!
44:22Team Richie!
44:23I think I'm in shock!
44:25Yeah, I'm so excited.
44:27Yeah, I just...
44:28I genuinely can't believe it at all.
44:30Now Bailey Alex sadly one of you will just miss out on the final
44:38This person is a gifted designer with a strong aesthetic
44:44So with a heavy heart the designer leaving the competition is
44:54Alex

45:15It's just a chance to grow and learn from everything you've gone and move on you are an incredible designer
45:21I credit you with saying this is what I'm sticking to and in the context of M&S
45:26It hasn't worked this time, but I'm sure that you'll go on to do amazing things. Yeah, thank you
45:31You've been amazing
45:35It's been such a whirlwind of emotions and tough times, but I've learned so much about myself
45:39I'm so proud of myself, and I'm excited to go forward in my career
45:43Next time on dress the nation that excited for us. I reckon this will win an outfit
