00:00Joe is a time looper, a time-traveling hitman who must assassinate targets sent from the future by the mafia.
00:05But every looper must complete his loop.
00:07This means that at some point, they will have to kill their alter ego from the future,
00:10which will allow them to recover a nice bundle of gold and live comfortably for the 30 years they have left.
00:15When it happens, Joe doesn't hesitate for a second.
00:17He collects the money and leaves for distant horizons.
00:20Freedom is within sight, but we cannot change our ways.
00:22And after 10 years, the money runs out, and Joe has to go back to work.
00:26Start from scratch and become the assassin he was again.
00:28The loop is a lie, freedom is just a decoy.
00:31Joe is a minion who was only used as bait to do the dirty work.
00:34He takes drugs to forget his endless regrets.
00:37But his true redemption is found in love.
00:40Here at last is the reward for 25 years of wandering: happiness, freedom.
00:45But this freedom will be taken away from him by those who gave it to him in the first place.
00:48He must therefore modify the loop and destroy at the source the one who will be at the origin of his misfortune.
00:53I wanted to come back to this scene, because I think it's the one that best represents what the film wants to tell.
00:57An infinite loop in which a man is trapped and who will do everything to free himself by fighting his demons and therefore by fighting himself.
01:05Looper is a brilliantly futuristic film in its approach.
01:08Visually, there is no sign of the shortcomings of a $30 million budget.
01:12Money well spent to make this dystopian future credible, which suggests things, makes our imagination work,
01:18and this wish is just as captivating thanks to the masterful staging of Rian Johnson,
01:22who knew how to breathe into his work a real dramatic power, tangible stakes and interesting characters.
01:27One might balk at Joseph Gordon-Levitt's makeup, which is supposed to look and act like Bruce Willis,
01:32but we can only salute the decision to offer us such an ambitious and incredibly well-executed work of science fiction.
01:39Many consider this film to be the last interesting project of Bruce Willis' career.
01:43And I can't really blame them, because from there on, it's going to be more or less laborious.
01:48They attempted a return to the theater in 2015 and performed on Broadway the play Misery adapted from the novel by Stephen King,
01:53but the returns will be very poor and will force Willis to return to the cinema.
01:57From 2013 to 2018, it was semi-nothing.
01:59There are a few rather pleasant exceptions to note,
02:02Rock the Casbah by Barry Levinson in 2015,
02:05Death Wish by Elly Ross in 2018,
02:07and Edward Norton's Brooklyn Affairs in 2019.
02:10Also worth noting during this period was a slew of sequels.
02:12G.I. Joe Conspiracy, Red 2 and Die Hard 5 in 2013,
02:16Sin City 2 in 2014,
02:18and Glass in 2019,
02:20where they meet one of their favorite directors,
02:22M. Night Shyamalan.
