16:44the only three going for their first laps
16:46in Q3
16:47on used soft tyres.
16:49Everyone else is on the new tyres.
16:51It's a Saturday.
16:53Let's feature George Russell,
16:55shall we,
16:56and see his way through the rest
16:58of the three miles
16:59on his first flying lap.
17:00He's been pretty much
17:01Mr. Everyday this year,
17:02hasn't he?
17:03And going very well indeed.
17:04We've yet to hear
17:05that he'll be signed up
17:06for a Mercedes next year,
17:08but of course he will be
17:09once they sort a few things out.
17:11This is already turn seven.
17:14Here we go.
17:15And these are the 90-degree block changes.
17:18I was telling you about
17:19they're very reminiscent
17:20actually of American street circuits,
17:21but there are parts later on
17:23that are not.
17:24So quite a long back straight now.
17:27And there's a little white kink
17:29on the way in,
17:30which just unsettles the car.
17:32And now you've already got
17:34to thread the car through here,
17:36through the eye of a needle.
17:37There's a little right hand
17:38on to the Anderson Bridge,
17:39but you're immediately on the brake.
17:40So important to get into this corner,
17:43onto the back straight.
17:44DRS will now be open.
17:46And you press the throttle so hard.
17:49It's a wonder it doesn't go
17:51through the bulkhead
17:52because you just never got
17:53enough power down there.
17:55And of course,
17:57he's fastest of anybody
17:58because he's the only one
17:59that's really set those
18:01proper sector times.
18:02That is George Russell.
18:04And he's flying.
18:05Oh, that's a hard hit in the wall.
18:08Well, he's going to carry on,
18:10and he's going to finish the lap here.
18:12But that was less than a millimetre away
18:15from a car-breaking collision
18:17with a wall for George Russell.
18:1929.1 though.
18:20That's a cracking lap time.
18:22But they make him strong,
18:24those Mercedes F1 cars.
18:26They certainly do.
18:27George Russell's only been quickest
18:28in Q2 at one other race this season.
18:30That was Canada.
18:31He won the race from pole.
18:33He's still fastest as his teammate
18:34crosses the line.
18:35Kimi Antonelli with a 1.29.5.
18:38And Oli Behrman on the used tyres
18:40with a 1.30.1.
18:41Here's Lando Norris now.
18:4326.6 in the 37.6 for the first two sectors.
18:47Neither of which better anything George Russell did.
18:50And he's probably about four tenths down
18:52on George Russell.
18:53Fernando Alonso can't go faster than Behrman.
18:55He's on the used soft tyres as well.
18:57Hamilton and Leclerc 26.7 for the first sector.
19:00Piastri in touching distance
19:02with a 26.5 in the first sector.
19:04Here comes Lando Norris then round the final corner.
19:07Paul Sitter here last year.
19:08What is this lap doing?
19:10Four tenths down, only third.
19:12Wow.
19:13That's a long way down, isn't it?
19:15So, a lot of work to do for McLaren.
19:18We talked about leaving no time on the table.
19:20That's George Russell's lap, isn't it?
19:22He threw that car at every corner.
19:25Charles Leclerc goes fourth fastest
19:28in his Ferrari ahead of Isaac Hadja.
19:32Lewis Hamilton will be next across the line.
19:34Piastri nearly three tenths down through the first two sectors.
19:37Hamilton fourth fastest ahead of Leclerc.
19:40But a long way off the pace.
19:42Verstappen has gone fastest in the middle sector.
19:45He's a couple of tenths down on George Russell.
19:47And these are just the first flying runs in Q3.
19:49We've got a whole load more to come.
19:51Where's Piastri going to put his McLaren?
19:53Go second fastest ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
19:56And ahead, crucially for him, of his teammate Lando Norris.
20:01Verstappen will be next across the line.
20:03He's been setting the pace here all day long.
20:06But on this occasion, he has to play second fiddle to George Russell,
20:10who's on provisional pole.
20:12Piastri was blinding through the final corner,
20:15but it still wasn't enough to make the difference.
20:18But they will go again.
20:20Verstappen, that's quite a lot of time to find a couple of tenths.
20:23That was some kind of lap from George Russell, wasn't it?
20:27Wall-assisted lap.
20:29Was it 2018?
20:31Paul DiResta, I think, was still alongside me.
20:33He described Lewis Hamilton's pole lap here in Singapore
20:36as a championship-winning pole lap.
20:38And this lap from George reminds me a bit of that.
20:42He'd have felt that bang as well.
20:44Yeah, it probably saved the gearbox,
20:46that he just kept his foot buried in it.
20:49But it's a wonder he didn't break a tie rod or something,
20:52or a bit of carbon suspension.
20:55But he had the gumption to just carry on.
21:00I tell you what, if that suspension had failed
21:02in the last corner, he didn't know about it.
21:04But that is why they get paid the big dollar.
21:07And Oscar Piastri scraping the wall as well in his McLaren.
21:11This is, because it's so close, the drivers are having to do this.
21:16And they want to get on that yellow piece.
21:18It's got more grip than the serrated curve.
21:20They want to be out there,
21:21but they don't want to be quite that far out there.
21:23But when you sit in the cockpit of these cars,
21:25there's an awful lot of real estate, of machinery behind you.
21:29The back of the car is wide and long.
21:32It's a wonder you can judge it, you know, to that extreme.
21:36Or maybe they're just getting away with it a little bit.
21:39But the best thing about that first part of qualifying,
21:42is we've got another part to come as well in terms of Q3.
21:46And that's where George Russell is making time on Max Verstappen
21:50and quite a lot of time in straight lines.
21:54That's interesting, isn't it?
21:56It's all straight line, isn't it?
21:57Yeah.
21:58The advantage there.
22:02Yeah.
22:03George would be the silver one, presumably.
22:05Max would be the orange one.
22:06Yeah, right.
22:07So through the corners then, yeah.
22:08Yes.
22:09It's the other way around, isn't it?
22:10I wonder if they were just highlighting the bits.
22:12No, that would make more sense,
22:14that he's making up that amount of time.
22:16Yeah.
22:17We shall see.
22:18Soft tyres, new soft tyres going on the cars.
22:20Ted Kravitz, down to you.
22:22So big question for me is,
22:24where has McLaren's speed gone,
22:26and do they have anything else?
22:27The sector times just suggest
22:29that they're slower in all three sectors.
22:31It's Russell who's got the best first sector,
22:33Verstappen who's got the best last one,
22:35and Antonelli is quickest in the middle,
22:37and Oscar Piastri a tenth off in all of them.
22:40But what a lap.
22:41That is going to take some beating.
22:42Two tenths quicker than Verstappen, George Russell.
22:45They're all lining up Lewis on used soft tyres.
22:48So Lewis has run out of tyres.
22:50Bear that in mind for this last run.
22:52Thank you.
22:53Lewis on used softs.
22:54You can see they're scrubbed.
22:55They've not got any shiny surface on.
22:57Why are new tyres better?
22:58Even though the others have only done 10 miles
23:00or 15 kilometres or something.
23:02It's because the compound hasn't had that heat cycle,
23:07hasn't been cured.
23:08They just give up a little bit of grip
23:10as soon as they get to full operating temperature
23:12and cool down again.
23:14That's one more cure going,
23:16and heat cycle going through them.
23:18And you lose just an ounce of grip
23:20that affects you braking, turning, mid-corner,
23:23and particularly traction.
23:25Three different pole-sitters in the last three runnings
23:28of the Singapore Grand Prix.
23:30We might well be on course for four in four here
23:33because George Russell, Max Verstappen, Oscar Piastri,
23:36Kimi Antonelli, the top four, none of them have been on pole
23:40here in Singapore before.
23:42The qualifying head-to-head, Oscar Piastri heads it at McLaren.
23:4510-7, little intra-team battle.
23:49There's no intra-team battle at Red Bull.
23:51Verstappen leads Tsunoda 15-0,
23:53make that 16-0 as he's out-qualified him again
23:55here this evening.
23:57And Piastri just looks around,
23:59makes sure everything in place slows down
24:01at the end of the pit lane.
24:03And this is an important lap.
24:05And when you know that you're probably not chasing pole position,
24:08the key here for Oscar is to wring the neck out of his car
24:12and qualify ahead of his teammate.
24:14Lando getting towards the end of the out-lap,
24:16the warm-up lap, going very steadily indeed,
24:19really trying to leave some life in his tyres.
24:22He's going to come across Verstappen and Piastri on their out-laps.
24:26And he might come across them as they're feeding out onto the track,
24:29as he makes his way now out of turn one.
24:32Lando Norris is going for it in his final flying lap,
24:35and he got pole position here last year.
24:37He's a long way off pole so far this year.
24:39Here's the first bit of traffic, his teammate,
24:41who keeps nicely out of the way.
24:43He's already got past Verstappen as well.
24:45Now he should be okay all the way down the Raffles boulevards.
24:49I bet he wishes that Oscar Piastri was ahead of him a bit,
24:52because he'd be picking up a nice toe here at the moment.
24:54But no one to help him out,
24:55and he's two tenths down in the first sector.
24:58It's not even a personal best for Lando,
25:00but we saw him really parsimonious with his tyres on the out-lap.
25:05Will he get a dividend now in the final two sectors?
25:09We saw it earlier with Kimi Antonelli acing the middle sector,
25:12when he had more life left in his tyres after a first sector that wasn't quite so quick.
25:17We'll watch Norris, we'll watch Charles Leclerc on his way down towards Turn 7,
25:23as we make our way now with Lando Norris out of Turn 13,
25:27and across the Esplanade past the Merlion,
25:29one of the big tourist attractions here in Singapore,
25:32but he hasn't got time to see that,
25:34and he's remaining two tenths off the pace.
25:36Personal best for Norris in this part of qualifying though.
25:39So if he's kept those tyres well,
25:41he'll get some dividend in the last few corners,
25:44and he needs, he's got to throw caution to the wind now.
25:47He's just got to pin it like Russell did.
25:49Isaac Hadja and Charles Leclerc matching Lando Norris in the first sector on their laps.
25:53Antonelli goes a couple of tenths faster.
25:56Norris to the line stays fifth fastest,
25:59and fifth fastest only for Lando Norris,
26:01and that will be a big disappointment for him.
26:04He can't out-qualify his teammate,
26:05and there are others that are queuing up to make his night even worse.
26:08And one of them could be Charles Leclerc.
26:11Double pole-sitter here, giving it absolutely everything.
26:14The man on provisional pole is George Russell,
26:16making his way across the Esplanade towards Turn 14.
26:19This is the corner Russell crashed at in Q2,
26:23and Leclerc, no problems there,
26:24goes very close to the wall,
26:26but gets away with it out of Turn 17.
26:28It's ragged, but is it fast for Leclerc?
26:31Not enough. Seventh fastest.
26:33Russell faster than anybody in the middle sector of this lap as well.
26:36So he's once again showing the front row pole position pace.
26:41George Russell round the final corners,
26:43led Q2 in Canada, took pole,
26:46led Q2 in Singapore,
26:48is on provisional pole and has gone faster.
26:51Max Verstappen needs two tenths to take a first pole in Singapore.
26:55Here comes Kimi Antonelli round the final corner,
26:58stays on the second row behind Oscar Piastri,
27:01and Max Verstappen making his way towards Turn 10,
27:04while Lewis Hamilton goes very close to the wall on the exit of Turn 14.
27:08Big stopping zone coming Hamilton's way now into Turn 16,
27:13as we watch him and Verstappen,
27:15who's going across the Anderson Bridge in a blur,
27:18around about 100 miles an hour.
27:20Hamilton round the final two corners.
27:22Can he out-qualify his teammate Charles Leclerc? Yes,
27:25but doesn't go any further than P6.
27:27And Hamilton,
27:29Verstappen I should say,
27:30is within touching distance
27:32if he can produce one of those Max Verstappen final sectors.
27:36He has a little bit of traffic ahead,
27:38but that will get out of the way.
27:39And again,
27:40a man who just needs to carry so much speed
27:43through that final chicane
27:45and pitch it into the last corner.
27:47He's backed off.
27:48He has backed off.
27:49He doesn't believe he can do it.
27:50And as he backs off,
27:51the celebrations can start for George Russell.
27:54Four different pole sitters in four years here in Singapore.
27:58You'd have thought Toto Wolff would be smiling a bit more.
28:01It's George Russell on pole for the Singapore Grand Prix.
28:05Mercedes have come good on this Saturday night.
28:10That was a cracking two laps, wasn't it, from George Russell.
28:14Built up to that and delivered it when he needed to,
28:17when it really matters.
28:19That's it, mate.
28:20Well done.
28:21Pole position.
28:22Super job.
28:23Yeah, nice job.
28:25What's Toto Wolff thinking?
28:27Yeah, you're right.
28:28He wasn't as excited as I thought he would look.
28:30Yeah, well, he hasn't signed up for next season yet.
28:33And maybe he's thinking,
28:34Dan, that might make the contract negotiations
28:36a little more tricky.
28:37What is it George Russell's looking for?
28:39To stay at Mercedes?
28:41What is it Toto Wolff is prepared to offer?
28:44And if he goes on to win the race,
28:45well, those negotiations might just get
28:47a little more advantageous for the driver.
28:50But Russell and Verstappen on the front row.
28:52What a prospect for tomorrow night.
28:55Hey, Kentucky, mate, for that.
28:57And I think Verstappen, with that answer,
29:02might feel that there was a bit of time left out there.
29:07Thank you, mate, for that.
29:08Does he think he's been blocked somewhere?
29:11Possibly.
29:12I don't know why Max didn't come in the pit lane,
29:13because he abandoned coming out of the final chicane.
29:18He didn't have that much more than that, I don't think.
29:22So, hold on.
29:24Is McLaren's hope that their superior tire wear pays dividends
29:28in what could be a one-stop race tomorrow?
29:31Or McLaren just realizing that others might be better suited here in Singapore?
29:36But they can't control the race unless there's some drama on the first lap.
29:40McLaren can't control the pace of the race tomorrow.
29:44That's going to be controlled by Russell and Verstappen out front
29:48to a pace that suits them and their tire usage around this very tight track.
29:54Out of his car leaps George Russell, a seventh career pole position
29:59and a second pole in 2025.
30:01And finally, Toto Wolff is smiling.
30:03I'm not sure who he's FaceTiming, but he's definitely smiling there.
30:07Oli Behrman, we ought to mention, out-qualifying Fernando Alonso
30:12on his debut here in Singapore.
30:14Isaac Hadja, P8.
30:16Hamilton ahead of Leclerc.
30:18Norris down in P5.
30:20He was about four tenths off the pole time of George Russell,
30:23which for the 129.158 is a new all-time best lap record here in Singapore,
30:31beating Lando Norris' lap record from this time last year.
30:35One o'clock tomorrow afternoon for the Singapore Grand Prix here in the UK.
30:40And George Russell on pole.
30:43Max Verstappen on second and Oscar Piastri queuing up in third,
30:47the championship leader.
30:49Yeah, you can thank your mate for that, Ciampiero Lambiezi said.
30:54I'm intrigued by that.
30:56Yeah, did someone block him?
30:58Who was his mate out there tonight?
31:01We'll find out in a minute when the drivers start speaking a little bit more.
31:08I wonder, did Lando Norris, was Lando Norris in and around Max Verstappen out on the track?
31:15That would be, that would be his mate.
31:17We'll find out.
31:22Max has got many mates, and one of them appeared to have been out on the track,
31:26but maybe not.
31:27Maybe he was somewhere else.
31:29So Lewis then on those scrub tyres at the end, but he still out-qualifies.
31:34Charles Leclerc, his teammate.
31:36They're a long way off pole, aren't they, Ferrari?
31:38Yeah.
31:39It's been a tricky weekend for them.
31:41I think they just are where they are at the moment, Ferrari.
31:45And that might be what they felt was their best here tonight.
31:52I think McLaren will be very disappointed that they weren't a lot closer to it,
31:55but I think as the weekend has gone on, and I know it started in a scruffy way for George Russell
32:00and for Kimi Antonelli on the Friday.
32:02As the weekend's gone on today, they have looked a real prospect here,
32:07and it is no surprise to me that George has gone out and taken that pole position.
32:13Well, both of his laps would have been pole.
32:15Yeah.
32:16That's always a telling sign, isn't it?
32:18He lucked into the rear suspension not folding up,
32:22but he didn't luck into the laps or the pole position, that's for sure.
32:25No need to give it the once-over, that's for sure.
32:27And pole is so crucial.
32:28Ten of the previous 15 Singapore Grand Prix's have been won from pole.
32:33David Coulthard looking cool down in Park Fermet.
32:37Has the microphone in his hand, and he's with the top three.
32:40Gentlemen, congratulations.
32:41First of all, George Russell, an amazing pole position.
32:44But to Max and Oscar, we're doing something a little bit different here, guys.
32:48Sorry, your mics are live.
32:50Sorry to bring you in, but we're doing an interview as one.
32:53So obviously you can't all speak at the same time,
32:55but if you disagree with something, please join in.
32:58We're doing that for your benefit.
33:00It's hot. You want to get on with the rest of this.
33:02So first of all, George, you put everything on the line there.
33:05You were hard into the wall coming out of the second-to-last corner.
33:10Brilliant pole position.
33:12Yeah, thanks so much. Amazing to be on pole position.
33:15Yesterday was a very challenging day for many different reasons,
33:20but it's good to come back, get a good result.
33:23Today, of course, is a long, sweaty race tomorrow,
33:26but I knew there was potential in the car.
33:28Kimi was doing an amazing job all weekend,
33:30and I actually gained quite a lot from seeing what he was sort of capable of doing yesterday afternoon.
33:35So, yeah, very happy to be on pole.
33:38Yeah, it was great.
33:39Max, you looked like you were in the hunt,
33:41but I believe there might have been a mistake towards the end of the lap, the final sector.
33:45Yeah, that's what happens when there's a car in front of you just cruising two seconds in front.
33:49So that's noted, will be remembered as well.
33:53Who was that? We didn't see that on screen.
33:55Not Oscar.
33:57Okay.
33:58So, yeah, that was a bit of a shame. Otherwise, I think it could have been close for pole.
34:01It's always very exciting here in qualifying.
34:03Of course, a little bit disappointed to not be first,
34:06but for us this weekend so far has been really good.
34:09Yeah, the car has been very competitive, you know, so for us to be second again is very good.
34:14Okay, so not Oscar.
34:16Happy enough with third.
34:17You know, this is all about big picture stuff as we get into the final part of this world championship battle.
34:23Yeah, you know, obviously I would have wanted more, but I don't think, I don't think we had four tenths in it to go and get poles.
34:29So, ultimately pretty happy.
34:31Feel like it's been a good weekend so far and built up through it nicely.
34:34And, yeah, ultimately it was a pretty clean session, so that's all I can ask for.
34:39Okay, George, finally just for you, and we'll let you guys go and cool off.
34:43This sets you up tomorrow, best place to start.
34:46You've got some tough competition right alongside you, standing here and tomorrow on the grid.
34:51Yeah, I mean, Singapore's not been the kindest of me in the past,
34:55and that's been through my own doing the majority of the time,
34:59so I'm not going to get carried away with this pole position, of course.
35:02It's the best place to start, there's a good pole side advantage here,
35:07so I'd like to think I can hold the lead into turn one,
35:09but, obviously, this guy on my left is pretty good at race starts
35:12and sending it down the inside, so I'll be keeping an eye.
35:15Yeah, and he seems pretty fired up.
35:17So, anyway, gentlemen, thank you very much. Congratulations on your qualifying.
35:20We'll let you go and cool off.
35:50Thank you.
36:15Thank you.
36:17Thank you.
36:30Thank you.
36:34Thank you.
37:04Thank you.
37:05Thank you.
37:34Thank you.
37:35Thank you.
38:04Thank you.
38:05Thank you.
38:34Thank you.
38:35Thank you.
