00:24Here are the two hands for our clock face.
00:29Remember that the long hand is called the minute hand and the shorter hand is called the hour hand.
00:42Before we continue, let's recap on what we already know.
00:48There are 60 minutes in one hour.
00:54There are 30 minutes in half an hour.
01:00So that means there are 15 minutes in a quarter of an hour.
01:07Remember, when the minute hand is pointing at the number 12, we say it is something o'clock.
01:18When the minute hand is pointing at the number 6, we say it is half past something.
01:29And lastly, when the minute hand is pointing at the number 3, we say it is a quarter past something.
01:44The time on the clock face now says 12 o'clock.
01:47Now watch what happens when the minute hand travels three quarters of a way around the clock face.
01:57As you can see, the minute hand is pointing at the number 9.
02:04When the minute hand is pointing at the number 9 on an analogue clock, we say it is quarter 2,
02:10because there is only a quarter of an hour left until we reach the next hour.
02:17If you look at the hour hand, it is almost at the number 1.
02:22This means that it is a quarter to 1, because there is a quarter of an hour left until it is 1 o'clock.
02:33On a digital clock, it would read 12.45, because we are still in the twelfth hour.
02:42And when the minute hand is pointing at the number 9, it means that 45 minutes has passed the hour,
02:49which also means there is only a quarter of an hour left until the next hour.
02:56Now that you have learned how to read quarter 2 times,
03:00let's practice reading the times on the clock coming up.
03:05The minute hand is pointing at the number 9, so it has to be quarter 2 something.
03:15The hour hand is almost at the number 7, so that means it is quarter to 7, or 6.45,
03:27because remember, the hour hand is telling us we are still in the sixth hour.
03:34The minute hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
03:46The minute hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
03:49The minute hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:15The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:18The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:22The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:29The hour hand is almost at the number 8, so it is quarter 2 something.
04:31The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:35The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:42The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
04:44The hour hand is almost at the number 8, so it is quarter to 8, or 7.45.
04:54The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
05:14The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
05:17The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 2 something.
05:19The hour hand is pointing at the number 9, so it must be quarter 3 something.
