00:00This first clock we see is an analog clock.
00:06This is the new clock I got.
00:08To learn time, let's start off with an easier version of this clock.
00:15Okay, the little pointer that spins is called a hand.
00:19This clock is a training clock and only has one small hand on it.
00:23The small hand is called the hour hand.
00:26Around the edge of the clock, we have numbers that go from 1 all the way to 12.
00:31This small hand tells us what the hour is.
00:34Right now, the hour hand is pointing to the 3, so it must be 3 o'clock.
00:40Now what hour is it?
00:436 o'clock, right! Let's look at another.
00:47What hour is this?
00:49I heard some of you say it is still 6 o'clock, and you are correct!
00:53The hour does not change until it is pointing right at the next number.
00:58As long as the hand points between the 6 and the 7, it is still 6 o'clock.
01:03Let's try one more.
01:05Right now, the hour hand is between the 11 and the 12.
01:10So is this 11 o'clock or 12 o'clock?
01:17It is still 11 o'clock.
01:19It will not be 12 o'clock until the hour hand points right at the 12.
01:23Good job, guys!
01:25Now this training clock works great to tell us what hour it is.
01:29But what if you have to be home by a certain time in the middle of the hour?
01:33It would be difficult to know exactly when to leave with just using the hour hand.
01:39That is why we have what we call the minute hand.
01:42Let's bring in one of our big kid clocks.
01:45This clock has a big hand and a small hand.
01:50We already know the small hand tells us the hour.
01:53But do you know what this hand does?
01:58This long hand is the minute hand.
02:00The minute hand tells us how much time has passed after the hour.
02:05When telling time, we always look at the hour hand first.
02:09On this clock, the hour hand is pointing to the 12,
02:12and the minute hand is pointing to the 1.
02:15So would we say the time is 12 and 1 minute?
02:18I know you might be tempted to say yes, but that is not correct.
02:22Each one of these increments are counted by 5s.
02:26There are 5 minutes between each of these big numbers.
02:30So when the minute hand is at the 1, 5 minutes have passed.
02:34So this is 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes, 35 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, 50 minutes, 55 minutes,
02:50and at the 12, the minutes start back over at 0.
02:54So right now, the time is 12,05.
02:58The hour hand is at the 12, and the minute hand is pointing at the 1, which is 5 minutes.
03:04Let's look at another one.
03:06Remember, we first look at the small hand for the hour.
03:10It is halfway between the 3 and the 4.
03:14So with just the hour hand, we know it is 3 o'clock.
03:17Now we look at the minute hand.
03:19It is pointing to the 6.
03:21Does that mean it is 3 and 6 minutes?
03:25No, you are right.
03:27We have to count by 5s to get the minutes.
03:30Let's count.
03:315, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 30 minutes.
03:38So the time is 3.30, because the hour is 3, and after counting by 5s, we see that the minute hand is pointing to 30 minutes.
03:48Let's do one last one.
03:50Can you help me out on this one?
03:52Great.
03:53Okay, you caught me sleeping earlier because my bedtime is 8 o'clock at night.
03:59When I saw the big hand pointing to the 8, I thought it was my bedtime.
04:03To get the correct time, we need to look at the hour hand first.
04:07What number is the small hour hand pointing to?
04:12It is at the 2 still, so the hour is 2.
04:16Great job.
04:17Now how many minutes have passed?
04:19Remember to count by increments of 5.
04:21Can you tell me what the minutes are?
04:29The minutes are 40, so the time is 2.40.
04:33Great job, everyone.
04:35Now that I know how to tell time, I will not try to sleep at 2.40 in the afternoon.
04:40Thank you so much for your help, guys.
04:42Remember to keep practicing and you will get better at this.
04:45We'll see you next time.
04:46Goodbye.
