Kunsthalle Zürich presents the first institutional solo exhibition of Avignon-based artist and experimental filmmaker Rose Lowder, focusing on her Bouquets series, initiated in 1994. This exhibition, curated by Fanny Hauser with a display by Studio Manuel Raeder, showcases all forty silent, one-minute 16mm films, displayed across ten large-format projections, alongside Lowder’s detailed visual transcriptions—colored pencil drawings on graph paper that map her frame-by-frame technique. Born in 1941 in Lima, Peru, Lowder transitioned from painting and sculpture to filmmaking after moving to Avignon in 1972, developing a meticulous method using a 16mm Bolex camera to create complex, layered compositions without post-production. Her Bouquets, capturing flora, fauna, and landscapes from France, Italy, and Switzerland, reflect ecological concerns by recycling film reel ends and engaging with organic agriculture. These films, inspired by Impressionist painters, explore visual perception, blending colors, textures, and time to challenge how viewers process images, while her notations reveal the intricate structure behind her poetic, sustainable filmmaking practice. The exhibition runs until January 4, 2026.
